I swear every time I watch these silhouette studio tutorials I feel like I’m back in seventh grade algebra looking around the class and everybody else is getting it and I’m sitting there not knowing what the hell is going on.
This is truly one of the best tutorials on working smarter not harder. how you made the cardboard stencil was genius along and not to mention the silhouette nesting. with How you make stencil is my favorite Making and not to mention the nesting in silhouette. I can’t wait to make something 👌🏆🤯
I need to print a large sign for a wedding on cameo and you just helped me so much. I didn’t even need the glow forge instructions but wow you figured that out so easily. I have a bunch of cardboard if you need it 😂 thanks so much for the help
WOW! That is one heck of a project! Ingenious use of materials to help you out with your alignment! I didn't even know about the nesting feature...but I've scrambled things to save space, but when alignment is critical, I've not been able to and have wasted so much vinyl! This gives me a few ideas. I don't have a GlowForge, but the process of making an alignment guide is exciting!
Great video Lisa! Was the protective sheets left on the acrylic sign until you were done or did you already peel it off on the front before attaching the cutout graphics?
Thanks, Larry! It was peeled off the side I was applying to, and left on the back until it was ready to deliver. In this case, until I was ready to take photos!
Excellent work. My only recommendation would have been to key the stencil circle, that way you know the circle logo is oriented perfectly in relation to the sign. Also, I wonder if a rubber or silicon roller would help push those letters into place so they don't lift off when you remove the stencil.
Awesome awesome awesome job! It looks great! I’m unclear on one thing though... when you placed all of your lettering on the frosted acrylic sheet, it looks like the frosted sheet still had the masking on it. Am I mistaken? If not, how did you get the masking off if you already placed your lettering on it?
Good question! The acrylic is masked on both sides when it is shipped. I removed it from the front to apply the letters, but the masking was still on the back to protect it.
@@LisaPottsDesigns okay, that’s what I kind of thought. It just didn’t look like it when I saw the video and I was trying to look close to see if that was the case. Thanks for clarifying that!
Bill R. Nice video. I'm new at this and I have ordered a Pro. not here yet. But mI was wanting to know when you pull the cardboard through the machine how do you know how far to pull it each time? Thanks!
Hey Bill! Hope you LOVE your machine. When doing passthrough, the screen will prompt you to move it about eight inches, and at least three inches of the design should still be in the machine. After that, the Glowforge will take a picture and try to align. If it's having issues, it's more than likely moved too far forward and doesn't have enough of the previous cut in the machine for alignment.
Looks amazing. I do have a question, You took the masking off after you put the letters on, so the 3m is attached to the masking tape and not the acrylic ? Can you explain why it's done that way?
Ah, yes that can be confusing. The 3M REPLACED the masking on one side. The acrylic was masked on both sides, so I took it off one side and used the 3M as the adhesive, but also makeshift masking for the cut.
Didn't see where you got the Acrylic letters from but I suppose that you had a sheet of Acrylic that you individually cut the letters out of then you stuck the corresponding cardboard letter on to the Acrylic? Is that correct?
Hello There! I wanted to ask if the Glowforge can be used inside the home? I'm looking to purchase one but I do not have space outside my home, especially during winter time. Thanks in advance for responding.
Lisa I bet you were a nervous wreck designing this sign. You did an awesome job. I was wondering about the masking on your large piece of acrylic. You just stuck your cutouts onto the masking?
It was certainly a lot of pressure! I didn't put it on the masking. It had it peeled off on the side I was applying to. Since this is clear frosted acrylic, you were viewing the masking on the back side!
@@LisaPottsDesigns DUH MARK, 😂. I honestly didn’t even think about that. I’m at Lake Cumberland relaxing in the RV right now. My mind is getting lazy. It turned out great. 😊
This was pretty good and I liked the idea of the cardboard cut out. The only issue I saw in the finished product was that the line was placed too far to the right and the top letters were too far to the left. Other than that it looks fantastic as I would never have thought you could do anything this big.
Is that adhesive permanent? I want to make some 3D home decor stuff and my own banner for when I go vending but was curious if the adhesive is a permanent strong hold.
I can't say with 100% certainty, but I think those boards have PVC in them. PVC is a big no-no. It can put out toxic fumes and really mess up the laser.
was this sign meant for outdoor use? does the 3m tape hold (ie not fall after pressed down)? which 3m would you recommend for acrylics in exterior setting (door sign). thanks!
This is not meant to be mean or anything, but I have ADD, and the music is hurting my ears on a volume that is just loud enough to clearly hear you speaking. (FYI- it causes sensitivity in peoples ears when you have add, I think it might be a tad loud), however you are doing a great job, I was thinking of getting one but I can’t at this time work the program you’re in. It works really well with how I operate and think! Some people use paper or mark their base, there are so many ways that work!
I don't have a Glowforge YET, but those cardboard templates are brilliant!! I'm going to use them for things I do with resin and my Cricut.
Wonderful! They're really handy for me.
The template was a great idea to align it . It came out really nice

So clever!

Would scoring three letters on the round piece and then cutting the acrylic and put place on the scores piece help ? (Like a puzzle )
It definitely could! I personally like fitting into cardboard, but many people score instead!
Hey Lisa! If you don't mind my asking ... were these glued onto the huge piece of acrylic?? WHICH you did a fantastic job by the way!! :)
Yes! I applied 3M adhesive to the acrylic before cutting. That way, it was a peel and stick.

You are so welcome!
that is cool
Thank you! 💕
beautiful job and great description. Did the letters have glue on the back before you stuck them down? Is that what the 3m does?
Yes, exactly. The type of 3M here is a sign adhesive. It makes application MUCH easier!
Didn't see where you got the Acrylic letters from but I suppose that you had a sheet of Acrylic that you individually cut the letters out of then you stuck the corresponding cardboard letter on to the Acrylic? Is that correct?
Correct! I placed it within the spot I cut out in cardboard.
Great tutorial. What did you use to glue the long line onto the frosted?
Also, how did you stack the 1/8" to get 1/4"?
I used a glue called SuperTite, it's similar to E6000! I literally took one piece and glued it on top of the other!
So cleaver
Thank you 💕
This is beautiful! Great job
Thank you so much!
How many total hours did this take? Can you give an estimate of what you charged the client? Was it between $400-600, $800-$1000 or $1200 or more?
Sure! I charged the client $600 and it took about two hours, including cutting the template.
Hi! I read below that you used SuperTite for that one piece. May I ask which version of SuperTite in particular? There are like 20 different ones 🤪
Hi! Yes, I forgot there were so many. haha! I used the multigrab 360.
@@LisaPottsDesigns thank you so much for the response and the clarification, I appreciate it!
Beautiful design. Quick question, how was this sign attached/hung onto the wall
It looks like the 4 holes on the corners are where they will attach it to the wall.
I had holes custom cut into the corner and they are mounted with stand offs!
@@LisaPottsDesigns thank you

I agree, but unfortunately that is how the file was made by their designer :(
Is that adhesive permanent? I want to make some 3D home decor stuff and my own banner for when I go vending but was curious if the adhesive is a permanent strong hold.
Yes, but it works best on smooth surfaces. I recommend 468 instead of 467 in the future!
hello, how did you paint the letters gray and green? is that tape or actually acrylic ?
The acrylic is already gray, the brown with green is just the paper backing of the 3M tape :)
Have you been able to inlay the cuts for acrylic, so they snap together? if so how?
I haven't with this, but that method is called kerf! I haven't done a video on it, but I think Big Blue Laser has!
Are you creating this on a GlowForge Plus or Pro? And if this is a Pro how can you do this with plus?
This is a Pro. You can create this will a plus by just breaking apart your guide into smaller pieces for your Plus :)
I want to buy one but that cardboard part just really made my heart race. How much do you charge a customer for a sign like this ?
This sign was $600 and about and hour an a half of labor :)
Are you using the glowforge pro?
Yep! The passthrough feature has made it so worth it.
How thick of acrylic do you use for signs? I’m going to order some but don’t want to order too thick 😬
I typically use about 1/4 inch! 1/8 can work for some signs, but I wanted the thicker size for this.
@@LisaPottsDesigns thank you!
Does the printer has ink to color the acrylic ? If not how to color the acrylic with multiple colors ?
The acrylic comes colored already. All the Glowforge does is cut it. I get my acrylic from Cerulean Tides :)
Cab you please tell me of we can cut foam poster board which we get from dollar tree using glowafage?
I can't say with 100% certainty, but I think those boards have PVC in them. PVC is a big no-no. It can put out toxic fumes and really mess up the laser.

Of course! I offer 1 on 1 classes. Check it out at lisapottsdesigns.com/training or email me.
How do you take off the masking on the front of the sign if the letters are on top of it?
The masking was on the back :)
Do you know if you can do this with the aura?
You would have to really rework the layout of your pieces due to the cut area, but as long as its not white, blue or clear acrylic, it should cut.
Where did you buy the 3M materials?
Amazon or Cerulean Tides 😊
was this sign meant for outdoor use? does the 3m tape hold (ie not fall after pressed down)? which 3m would you recommend for acrylics in exterior setting (door sign). thanks!
Why do you split it up in your design? Doesn't passthrough just take care of all of that?
My design was wider than the passthrough slot. Also, I wanted to maximize my material, so I broke it apart to create less waste.
Fiona! 💖
OBSESSED with her. Every time I go to Cincy, it's always too cold for her to come out. 😭
