  • In this video, Larry Dee Harper provides insight into the beliefs of John Nelson Darby and the history of Dispensationalism.
John Nelson Darby originated the dispensational understanding of the Scriptures. It was initially nothing more than a method of interpreting prophetic literature of the Old Testament. Harper gives an overview of John Darby’s life, who was a contemporary of both Søren Kierkegaard and Charles Finney. Darby believed, like other Protestants, that the Truth needed to be restored. But he lacked one thing that all other Reformers had; he placed no value in the writings of the Early Church, which is obvious from his own words on the topic. He plainly rejects what the Early Church “Millenarians” like Irenæus and Hippolytus believed. Darby was affiliated with a group of members of the Church of England at first, but later started the Brethren movement. Premillennialists published a report on the prophecies of Scripture that they believed confirmed their doctrine since it predicted the restoration of the Jews to Palestine.
