- It’s the season to be jolly! Is there a more jolly and joyous time of the year than July? Not for us, since we got to do the Ted Lasso Christmas special this week! My first time watching Ted Lasso season two has so far been one of the best TV experiences of my life! Usually I’m very opposed to watching holiday-themed things outside of the Holidays, but this felt so warm and cuddly and loving, I couldn’t wait!
This show continues to amaze and amuse, I can’t wait to keep going, and hope you’ll all be with us along the way! Love, Sam

Ted Lasso Season 2, Episode 3 - Do the Right-est Thing

This is very much a "filler" episode because Apple requested 2 extra episodes after the season was already written. So the writing team wrote and added them (This one, and Beard's episode later) after and fit them into the season.
You both continue to knock it out of the park with these reactions.
As a bit of trivia, when Higgins is naming the hometowns of the players around the table at his Christmas party, those are the real hometowns of the actors. Such a nice touch.

Something I just realized watching this reaction. Jamie’s team building with the tape and his attitude of being more of a team player. It all happens after his session with Dr. Fieldstone. I really wish to know what they would have talked about to get this change in Jamie.
I’d like to add some trivia too: Sam is 100% right this was a filler episode, how else can you explain a Christmas episode that aired in August? Season 1 was 10 episodes the writers wrote 10 episodes for season 2; then Apple ordered 12 episodes. Instead of dragging out the plots and arcs they have written, they just added two more filler episodes.
Two more lovely pieces of trivia: when Higgins is toasting to the hometowns of the player’s real hometowns. Also the dentist and the usie guy,however you spell that, they are real life mother and son.

Carol of the Bells is a filler episode and there is one detail from this episode that seemed inconsequential at the time but will figure prominently later in the season.
Personally, I can't wait for the reaction for the next filler episode!

It wasn’t just that It’s a Wonderful Life did poorly that made it cheap for American networks to air. It was that the copyright holder forgot to renew copyright after the first term. So, starting in the 1970s it was able to be aired royalty free. They managed to reassert copyright back in the 90s so now it airs a little less, but because of those 20+ years of non-stop airings, that’s what made it popular.

Also, episode 3 has a sort of callback to season 1 episode 9. In that one, Rebecca scoffs at Ted's suggestion that she's going to inspire girls to become football club owners but it turns out that Ted was right and that girl was Nora

Not sure if y’all noticed it or not (my dad pointed it out to me) but when they’re showing the long make-shift Christmas dinner table, one part of it is a door that they took off the hinges! I love picking up new things in the background of this show

The manager on Soccer Saturday is actually the manager Rebecca fires in episode 1 of season 1. But the other two guys on the panel (Jeff and Chris) are actually on Soccer Saturday. In fact, Chris Kamara is in one of the most famous football clips out there.

On Jan Mass: actor's name is David Elsendoorn. IIRC, he's actually from the Netherlands. This is actually another 'Easter Egg' to soccer fans. "He's not rude, he's just Dutch.." Players from Holland are well known for speaking 'truth to power'. Not giving any spoilers, but there's a couple of good examples in later episodes.
The Emmys should invent a Best Ensemble Cast award, because every actor on this show deserves it.

I love that Jamie is basically at this point a child who parrots what he hears without actually understanding it emotionally. Like...he SAYS all the right things about earning his spot back and overcoming adversity, but you can tell he heard it from Keeley or in a movie and he doesn't really understand what it means yet. It's so great.
Sam feels awkward in that moment because in most African countries swearing especially in front of your parents is very disrespectful😅

When they formally greenlit season 2, they expanded the order count by 2. This is one of those two episodes, hence why it doesn't effect the overall season story.

I know this is waaaay late, but I noticed that originally when Higgins made the general announcement that his family would host any players who couldn't get home for the holidays he said that generally, *two* might take him up on it. He's gotten more popular with the players!

My lady love told me that I'm equal parts Ted, Roy, and Beard. I might have received a nicer compliment at some point in my life, but I can't recall when.
I have been a devoted football fan (Celtic FC, C'mon you bhoys in green!) for decades. That connection lured me to this show. It has now supplanted catholicism as my guiding life philosophy.
40:50 that isn’t why “It’s A Wonderful Life” was aired so much. The reason is that the Copyright actually had lapsed due to a clerical error…and anyone could air it for free…as much as they wished. The Copyright was later reestablished because they still owned the source material and music rights.

Ep 4 may not have had much plot, but expanding on tiny details about various characters enriches the entire show when the characters and their arcs and development are so intrical to the overall story. Filler can be hit or miss but this was definitely a hit.
Football teams have a busy schedule over the Christmas period, especially Boxing Day (day after Christmas). So professional footballers won’t spend Christmas with their family for their entire footballing career. The international players in particular, don’t have the opportunity to fly back to their home country.
Thank you for calling out 'IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE'. my mother loved that movie so much and thought it was the second best Christmas story ever (first being the birth of jesus from the bible. yeah, we were *that* family). felt like I was being gaslit my entire childhood.
Isn't it just terrible? God knows I'm envious of people who didn't have to watch it a thousand times as a child because you weren't given a choice.

After my friend and I got really good seats our work refused to give us the time off. We left work the day of and got on a plane to go to the match and caught the first flight back and went back to work straight from the airport upon our return

I know I'm kinda late to this, but just incase - @24:40 Soccer Saturday is a live football show where they discuss real-time highlights of games being played during the "saturday 3pm blackout" - A lot of games are played at 3pm saturdays but are not allowed to be broadcasted on TV due to an old UK rule to encourage people to watch their local team in person, instead of watching a more famous team on TV.

That figure of 25 million was probably from a few years ago, TV revenue drop is probably 50million per year instantly. Not to mention a dramatic drop in prize money and sponsorship deals. My team suffered this 11 years ago and still suffering from it now
Too add insult to injury, there is a pile-on effect. Not only do you lose TV money, sponsor leave with their money, opportunities to generate extra money from tourneys and pre-season tours, existing players leave to find better teams, bringing in new players becomes harder. This can create a death spiral because their are leagues below the Championship. Probably the worst case is Portsmouth FC. In 2009-2010 they were playing in the Premier League, but got relegated due to poor play and finance issues. By 2016, they were in the Fourth Tier called EFL League Two.

Just a trivia correction but it wasn't because It's A Wonderful Life did so poorly that it was cheap to air - it's maybe even more interesting. The copyright for the movie was a 28-year term and the copyright owner intended to renew but through a mistake in the paperwork the renewal application lapsed and the movie entered public domain in 1974 - allowing the networks to broadcast it at no cost entirely - no licensing, no royalties - but if the paperwork had been processed correctly the movie would have never entered public domain and we would not have been watching it for the last 30-odd years.
Correction to your Correction… The Copyright was later reestablished - because they still owned the original source material and music rights.

This is one of two filler episodes for the season using two scripts they weren't going to produce but were told they were free to extend the season by 2 episodes and so got to use them. The second is, uh, interesting?
