Teams have youth academies they recruit for. When I was consulting with a company in Birmingham, their project manager was a huge fan of Birmingham FC and had a nephew playing for them. He was very excited because his 11 year old son had just been recruited to the Aston Villa youth academy. He was confliced though because at that time, both teams were in the Championship and Aston Villa was a big rival for Birmingham. Still, he was extremely proud.

Tiny detail that I like, that may not have been deliberate, was having Zoreaux play quarterback on the American football play. As a Canadian, Canadian football being essentially the same game, he is the one player on the field who would understand American football and how to play quarterback. In fact, the actor, Moe Jeudy-Lamour, played university football at my alma mater in Montreal!

I think it's safe to assume even the tiniest details on this show are deliberate. It's what makes it so great, and we love it when you guys point them out! And how cool about Moe Jeudy-Lamour! Tiny sidebar--the only time I've been to Montreal was actually for a training trip with my team. What a small world! ❤️Jacqui

Relegation is actually the bottom 3 teams and all the 20 teams play their last game on the same day at the same time. There have been seasons where the fate of 5-8 teams can be made on that last day depending on the outcomes of all 10 matches

There is a part of Ted and Rebecca's conversation that was cut from this , just two words "What, why?", that I think really shows what Rebecca's life has been like in the years she was married to Rupert (and had lost touch with Sassy) - that the concept of being forgiven doesn't even make sense to her.

I really appreciate the depth of analysis that you go into in your reactions.
I’ve watched Ted Lasso through several times and watched a number of reactors. Watching your reactions you stitch together multiple episode references that I hadn’t noticed, and it is great.
For example, a couple of reactions ago you went into a long discussion about Jamie being lower class and living on a council estate. Having English heritage, I recognized who Jamie is from his accent and phrasing immediately. Your analysis called out that the writers were using “Pavlovian” as a subtle way to indicate that Jamie is not well educated. This observation makes me appreciate the quality of the writing so much more.
The accents and choice of phrasing also make it clear that both Roy and Jamie come from the same background, though from different cities so the accents are not the same, but are from similar socioeconomic groups. This is why the discussion at the bar in “For the Children” where Roy and Jamie connected worked so well. They both come from similar backgrounds, they both have very visible ways of not having learnt to process their emotions well. Roy is older so has learned more than Jamie. But ultimately, they are both processing childhood trauma in a way that almost perfectly mirror each other.
Thank you for helping me appreciate even further the art and talent that has gone into this show.

Oh man, that Rebecca and Rupert scene pisses me off no matter how many times I watch it. Like the fact that he elected to have a whole-ass baby just to spite his ex-wife? And then rubs it in her face? That's next-level. It's also really interesting how there are only two true villains in this show - Rupert and James Tartt - and both of them are the reasons behind the two erstwhile antagonists of this season - Rebecca and Jamie. This episode shows them at their most villainous (so far ......) as well as Rebecca and Jamie at their lowest. Some cool, sad parallels there.
Speaking of scenes that always get me, the Jamie & Ted ones are just 😭 The fact that Jamie knew he'd be reamed out by his dad for passing the ball yet did it anyway because a) it was the right thing to do and b) he took Ted's lessons to heart despite still being under the impression Ted sent him away says so much with so little. One really subtle acting choice that I love, too, is right before James starts his tirade, you can see Jamie's about to argue, but that fear that's been literally beaten into him ultimately wins out. Much like passing the ball and his apology to Keeley in 1x08, Jamie deciding, "No, I don't deserve to be treated this way," however briefly, shows such a step forward. Especially because with him having been at Man City for months and months by this time, no doubt this scene has been a common occurrence - yet he has that desire to push back anyway. It's a great setup for a certain scene/episode in the back half of season 2 ... I mean what?
Coupled with Ted's "There is something worse out there than being sad, and that is being alone and being sad" after he saw Jamie, then Jamie about ready to cry when he got the army man? GOSH. So good.
One thing I hadn't noticed until now is how that segment twice connects Jamie to Henry yet again. Right as Ted sees Henry's supportive drawing and "We're proud of you" text - showcasing the loving, wholesome relationship they have - he sees Jamie being abused by his dad, then later he gives him one of his son's toys. The lookout, to show that Jamie _isn't_ alone, that he has someone looking out for him. Of note, too, is that whereas Sam and Rebecca both gave back/got rid of the army men Ted gave them, Jamie keeps his. WATERWORKS.
P.S. Can't wait for Sam's reaction to the end of 2x01 and beginning of 2x02, I feel like he'll get a kick out of it 🤣

I was also wondering: With the season 2 episodes being longer than season 1 and season 3 looking to be delayed further, are you still planning on doing two episodes per upload, or spacing them out to just one? I don't care either way, just curious.

    • @theshamelist
      @theshamelist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We're still doing two episodes at a time. We don't expect season 3 for a while, but we wanted to be safe, and it works out with the timing of another show we're starting after this. Rest assured though, no matter what, we will be doing season 3 live!
And thank you for your thoughts! Obviously I agree that the Rupert baby thing is infuriating, and I love that you pointed out the connection between Jamie and Henry. As always, your comments are insightful, and help us appreciate this show even more! ❤️Jacqui

The scene with Ted and Rebecca has a wonderful structure. They set them up facing each other and the center of the frame is between them. Ted is holding out his hand, which is right in the middle. When Rebecca hugs him instead, she crosses the frame to Ted’s side. Simple, effective visual representation.

You know, that comment about something you just can't be nice and need to dole out a little tough love hits home. I used to teach college. My first semester, I was young - only 30 years old. I was WAY too lenient with my students, and at the end of the year, we had an anonymous professor evaluation. So many comments I got were students telling me I needed to be more strict and set clearer boundaries, and that it was okay to be a hardass sometimes. I never forgot that.

I am so pleased I found your channel today, and so didn’t have to wait for the s1 finale. I have really enjoyed your reactions and can’t wait for s2.
As a Brit, I particularly enjoy hearing your explanations of cultural things I take for granted, such as the rags to riches aspect of football. It hasn’t been obvious in s1, but a significant proportion of the squad isn’t British. We invented football, but it is a truly global sport. So a kid in Mexico can aspire to playing in the British Premiere League, as much as a kid from a council estate in Manchester can.

@@theshamelist The English didn't invent football - any more than we invented boxing - we just wrote the rules. (Marquess of Queensbury rules in the case of boxing, the same guy who persecuted Oscar Wilde.)
The rules of Association Football (hence "soccer", a Victorian university slang word) were drawn up in 1848. Rugby ("rugger") is named after the English public school where a pupil first picked up the ball and ran with it in 1823 - a move banned under "soccer" rules. American football should really be called American Rugger.
Also, because this is us, there are also two forms of Rugby, divided on the basis of social class. Rugby League and Rugby Union.

Yeah, i'm 'late to the party', but I''m American soccer fan checking in..I hope you two will find this funny (although you both know folks don't have to know *anything* about soccer to enjoy the show) - the professional league in the US (MLS) has a 'salary cap'. When Victoria Beckham (she was "Posh", right?) decided she wanted to move to Los Angeles, David was aging, but still wanted to play. The League thought, "..ooh. Butts in seats buying tickets if he's playing over here!" The League actually wrote a new rule. Any team that can afford it can pay three players whatever they want (breaking the 'salary cap''). We still call it the "David Beckham Rule", even though so many of our successful teams are using it to hire talented young folks from the rest of our continent, instead of retirees in Europe. :D

The bottom 3 teams in the Premier League get relegated to the Championship League; the top 3 teams in the Championship League get promoted to the Premier League. It's a brilliant system, imo.
It's easy for a coach of American football, whatever the league, to say wins and losses don't matter, because no matter how unsuccessful the season is, they still get to stay in their league. Coach Beard is right to set Ted straight.

The thing I like about 9 and 10 is the real lessons they contain. In ep 9, Coach Beard presses the issue that winning and losing matter. The sunny message that "winning/losing don't matter, it's trying your best" sounds great but in the real world there are consequences for losing. In competitive sports or business, losing gets people fired, damages careers, effects everyone in the organization. Being the sunny manager (either in sports or in business) is easy; making the hard call, the unpopular call may make you the hard boss but your also the boss that keeps the team or company afloat and thus protecting the well being of many teammates/coworkers.
In ep 10, it demonstrates what I think is the most important lesson that sports teach: how to take a loss. Nothing prepares teenagers for the real world like competitive sports. In the adult world, your going to lose, even if you don't deserve to. I can usually tell if some one played sports in their teens by how they handle defeat or even just a major setback. Usually those with a history of competitive sports handle it much better.

Right now, my nephew plays hockey. At 9, a private boarding school with a focus on hockey (in his hometown, so he didn't have to board) scouted him to play for them. It didn't even have an elementary curriculum, they had to come up with something special for him.

You guys are spot-on about the writing; for example one of the big reasons why this show is so relatable is the compassionate way that the writers convey the trauma of divorce (I've often said that marriage is the leading cause of divorce). But of course the chemistry of the ensemble cast is just as crucial. Here's a fun little video of the Lasso actors playing MTV UK's "Castmates 101" quiz. The first question: Did Jason Sudeikis audition for a role in the Blue Man Group? Find out the answer below:

Yeah "playing in college" isn't a thing outside of America in terms of how people progress into professional sports. There is an academy system and every professional team has an academy made up of teams for every age from 9 to 16 years old. Between 16 and 18 if they are deemed promising enough in terms of potential they will be offered their first professional contract and continue to play in either the under 18s, under 23s, be loaned to a team who are not as good as their current team so they can get game time or if they are good enough they will play for the first team.

I mean we all know Jacqui wants to be Rebecca right and Sam sais he feels a connection with Beard in the reaction... And I can't blame either of you , because I feel like I'm such a Beard in real life (quiet but always observant) and I don't know if I want to be Rebecca when I grow up (says the 25 years old) or if I want to be with her XD
Anyways lovely reaction once again can't wait for next week's video. CHEERS!

Again, this show subverting expectations of what a sitcom does. They could have dragged Ted learning the truth out for several episodes, creating fake drama and easy, cheap, predictable laughs but they short-circuited the whole thing with a sincere human moment between them that didn't generate a single laugh and ended a season's worth of subterfuge on her part in a moment. What other sitcom does this? This show deserves all the Emmy love it gets and more.

you two will love this story. My favorite hat/visor was a Simpon's yellow visor with Homer on it, and it read "Homey Wear" and yes I did get two of them, but after wearing basically every day for several years, they both wore out. Looked up the company that made/imported them to inquiry if they were still producing them. I ended up getting transferred to the factory in China that made them, but still I pressed on and asked how many would I need to get an order of them. Their response, "a gross", not knowning now many that was I asked what that meant, 1000. I had a good laugh and thanked them and hung up. But for the next week I honestly tried to work out the possibility of being able to sell enough of them that I could break even.

So, you know what makes Rupert such a good villain? You know there are assholes like him. Toxic asshole exes that seem like they are done with you, but then they somehow manage to find a way back into your life and to control you and make your life hell. It makes you wonder: What did Rebecca do to him to make him loathe her so much that he would want to make her miserable? Answer? Probably nothing at all.
