I think a lot of people don't see the subplot of the things Arthur went through. Like throughout the entire movie he went through things from his perspective, things that didnt even happen. Examples are when he imagines him being on the show, his entire relationship. So with that taken into account, did everything happen exactly as we have seen them on the screen, or did we simply see things from his viewpoint ?
