Yes! There are very few who can come close, and I would argue that there are none within their genre. Pavarotti, Carolli, in opera also once in a lifetime kind of voices. Journey has always been a solid number 1 in my book, with The Eagles, Chicago, and Phil Collins alone or in Genesis are close behind, but Steve is just on another level.
Thanks man I love this s*** The road is a magical place but it's very very lonely it's awesome but it's lonely this is a great love song as well thanks for watching
Faithfully is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful power ballads made. Journey had other great power ballads like Open Arms & When You Love a Woman. Steve Perry's voice was the sound of Journey's success. All others, even though their voices were good, were just mostly trying to duplicate that iconic sound. Steve was rportedly self-taught with no formal vocal lessons. He's described as a counter tenor or high tenor altino w/incredible vocal range and a type of rounded operatic falsetto (his description). Wikipedia stated Perry's range was F#2 - A5, but there's that famous G5 and incredible run he did in Lay it Down. Even Brian May of Queen said he had that "voice in a million". It's not just the voice, but the emotional delivery, as well. From what I understand, Perry was also the main writer of Journey songs in his time with them. When I learned that Sam Cooke was his first real influence, it made sense. There are some Sam Cooke songs that I can definitely hear where Steve pulled some technique, etc. I regret never having been able to see Journey in concert while Steve was with them, but my Mom & brother went to at least one concert in the early 80s. Even today, with severe dementia, I can pull up a song with Steve Perry, and she lights up.
Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain were a songwriter match made in power ballad heaven. Send Her My Love is another one I've discovered recently. Cain says he was having lunch with a friend who mentioned he'd run into one of Cain's old girlfriends. He told him "send her my love" and then thought, that could be a song.
@ChefBarb58 I'm actually headed out of town with my sister to see Mom in the nursing home rt now. We've found that choral pieces like Handel's Messiah or hymns also perk her up because of her church choir days. We're always looking for those things that help us connect with her while we have her.

You are correct; this is considered a "power ballad" because of the combination of soft lyrics and harder accompanying instruments, and Journey were THE MASTERS of the power ballad.
Journey essentially defined the power ballad with this song and Open Arms, Oh Sherry, When You Love a Woman, Send Her My Love. Throw in their other great non-ballads (Wheel in the Sky, Don't Stop Believing) and their distinct sound (thank you Steve Perry), Journey is legendary to the late 70's - 80's.
Oh Sherry was written and sung by Steve when he left Journey. He had a bunch of great songs as a solo artist, similar to Phil Collins after he left Genesis, Eric Clapton after he left Cream, and Sting after he left The Police.

What WHAAAAAAAT!! I was traveling to Virginia from Rhode island for a family vacation to Bush Gardens. I remember a lot about that 1990 road trip. Mostly how long that car drive took. But most importantly I remember the music, the radio stations turning to static as we approached another state or town that the signal couldn’t reach. We ended up in Maryland where the radio came in crystal clear. Don’t remember the station but remember the music was pop hits. My mom and Dad are now divorced but when I was 10 they were still in love and married. This song came on, I remember my dad would always have his arm around the top of the passenger chair. He would gently stroke my mom’s hair and I just felt happiness. They always showed affection and love to each other. So as this song was playing I watched the sights out the window, took in the sun rays that screamed through the backseat window and just felt the excitement of the moment. I’ll never forget that trip, that moment and this song will always take me right there, in the family wagon, stuffed in the back seat with my brother and sister. Music is magic. Though time changes us, relationships change and people fall out of love like my parents did……the song remains the same. So when I hear it everything is still as it was then.😢
Man his voice gives me goosebumps. And I've heard these songs thousands of times. Huge Journey fan every since i was in grade school (late 70's, early 80's)
I saw them on this tour. I remember going behind the civic center and seeing all those trucks and buses. One bus said "Journey" and the other said "Voyager". I'm positive they all have potty mouths, but Steve knew his audience, and he knew that there were a lot of parents with their kids out there, such as in my case as well. He was trying to reel the audience back in. Great concert! ...btw, when Jon is looking in the mirror at the pic of the woman, that's his first wife, Tane Cain, and she has several songs here on YT, her biggest is probably "Holdin' On".
Steve Perry IMHO is the greatest vocalist of all time. His vocal abilities and range is unmatched. He has the emotional ability to draw you in captivate you from the first note. Another point for the touring aspect with this song….you might have noticed Steve Perry on a corded phone. We didn’t have cell phones or laptops… anything like that, back then… so touring had to be a little tougher.
One of my favorite bands of all time. I love seeing the younger generation getting acquainted with the music I grew up on. Great reaction! Thanks for sharing.
I was too young to hear it then but it's been in my life since 20 I was only 6 when it came out and had religious parents so didn't hear anything like this till married
The GOAT where singers are considered! Also, NO in -ears back then, and even until he stopped singing. Steve Perry... the best. Great song....I was military, total vagabonds, just like musicians!!! Ty for sharing this amazing band!!!👍😉🥰🎶🎶🎶🎶
The military analogy is perfect. I think my husband and I spent more time stationed on opposite sides of the planet than we did home together, and we didn't have Facetime or email back then. Great reaction, guys. Do more Journey with G! Anyway You Want It should be next 😁😁😁
Hey BP, they’re currently touring with Def Leppard and the Steve Miller Band. Obviously, Steve Perry isn’t singing with them but Arnel is a great singer as well. It is well worth seeing both bands if you can. I waited 35 years to see either of them in concert and finally did a couple of years ago. It’s a great show from both bands…Hope you get a chance to see them live.
Hi Pegasus i'm so proud of you for taking the time to share this beautiful gem with this young gentleman,he's so respectful and strikingly handsome (I must say). I love how he responds to you with the "yes sir"! I can see that he's well brought up! 👍 😊
This song is so beautiful.. captures that yearning feeling we all feel in relationships so beautifully.. "music is what feelings sound like".. that quote comes to mind...
Steve Perry can SANG! This might not be the song that closes down the bar, but it's a pretty good "girl came up to the room" song. Every rock band understood the value of having that song that got girls to buy the record. Also, there's something about "artist on the road" songs that always seems to hit. Bob Seger and Jackson Browne tell that story really well.
Perry’s voice is powerful, pure and full of passion. The music is so emotional that combined with Perry… there will never be another like Journey. If I remember rightly, the studio was hesitant about their style, rock ballads.
I think it’s great to see you bringing the kids along-mentoring them & introducing them to the oldies. He seems like a very grounded good kid. I wish him well!
Steve Perry doesn't just sing a story, he makes you FEEL the story..every..single..time! You have to react to Mother Father live 1981 Houston and Lovin Touchin Squeezin, Midnight Special version.
Often referenced as some of the greatest love song lyrics of all time "And bein' apart ain't easy on this love affair. Two strangers get to fall in love again. I get the joy of rediscovering you." Only someone who truly knows about being away and that yearning to be re-united with a loved one and being with them again could write a lyric this strong. Brilliant.
Yeah, it's about being away from home and touring, but more than that, "Faithfully" reflects that these guys are surrounded by groupies, constant temptation, and the woman back home is aware of that, so it's not just love but reassurance when he tells her he's being faithful.
"SOFT ROCK"🎶. Journey came and calmed us. The journey in our lives were heading toward civil like conditions. Predidus acts were coming to violence.😢 These guys came and just calmed us, soothed our pains. We were going back to growing up again.😊
Your theme song came out in 1976 by a band called Thin Lizzy and is still relevant enough for you to choose that song. That’s kinda of why those of us that were old enough to be in to music in the 70s and 80s tend to play our old music. No auto tune, no where to hide weaknesses in performances. Just sheer talent. BTW, Steve “the Voice” Perry was my first rock singer crush!
I saw journey when I was about 12 may have been this tour they were as good live as the record also the guitarist by this time had grown up in music he played with Santana at 14 and is in the black magic woman video great band
If you're interested in more music about life on the road, Jackson Browne's album "Running On Empty" is a collection of songs all about that - life on the road. All the songs were recorded live; in concert, in a hotel room, on the bus (you can hear the motor gearing down at one point). An insightful look at what music artists go through for those of us who have no idea how rewarding yet lonely for friends and family that life of touring can be. I highly recommend listening to the entire album. Thanks for all you do to get the word out about the artists you review!
Yup, it's a power ballad and it filled arenas nation wide! I am sure this resonated with any band or solo artist that was touring and any military personnel that wre deployed. This was a mega hit back in the day! You can still tour, just do it in a limited capacity. Steve Perry will go down in history as one of the greatest vocalists of all time!! Unfortunately, he will not receive those accolades until he is dead, then everyone will give him posthumous rewards and praise him to the sky and back, instead of giving them to him now!! Johnny Cash receive the most praise after he was dead for Hurt, even though he had a decades long career with hit after hit after hit!
There's something so Nostalgic about this song, this video, this group. It will always be Beautiful. There's also an ache deep down that makes you miss this era and makes you feel a little sad that we can't go back even if for a short time. It was such an Amazing time time for so many reasons. Steve Perry's voice will always be a Beacon to this time and the feelings that we had back then. Steve's voice is, and will always be, Timeless and Perfect.
what THIS man said!! I was a Navy wife. I used to sing Always another cruise.. and instead of loving a music man. I sang loving a NAVY man. He hit it hard on the head with that comment.
That unbelievable song... one of the greatest journey Songs goes straghit to your heart and tell you... no matterg whefrer you are... no matter what you do... love is everything...
Love Journey and Steve Perry! He has such an amazing voice and this is such a beautiful song. They have a collection of massive hits! Love your reactions and when you hook up another person to experience the songs you have discovered. Thanks for sharing.
Steve Perry has been my favorite single artist since like 1979. Sadly I never did get to see him in concert. I would love to see him just once before my time on earth is done. He is def one of the greatest of all times
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of a story I heard about Prince. He was just about to come out with Purple Rain and he called the guys in Journey and played it for them to get their blessing. Purple Rain pretty much has the same chord progressions. Journey told him go for it they liked it, and the rest is history.....
This song is so special to me in two ways. First it was my Senior Prom Theme in 1984. Our 40th reunion is this fall. I am going to play on loop a video of our 34 Classmates that we lost their pics, dob & passing date. In the background with be this song. We were such a close class that they’re in our hearts forever Faithfully. 2nd - I was in love with a musician who traveled back in my day (we are still friends) so this song & Elton John’s “Tiny Danver” had so much meaning to us.
This song was used in the video of the USS Holland home port change in ‘92. Standing on that pier watching the ship pull away with the love of my life was hard. This song captures everything a military family experiences.
My absolute fav journey song ❤️ steve perry one of the best voices of all time! Thank you for covering this one! Love watching you guys react to the classics!

I saw journey when I was about 12 may have been this tour they were as good live as the record also the guitarist by this time had grown up in music he played with Santana at 14 and is in the black magic woman video great band
:WHEEL IN THE SKY" 1980 LIVE OSAKA JAPAN!!! MOST EPIC SOLO INTRO IN HISTORY!
That is real Classical Rock Music , for me as an 56 years old Metalhead normal Music
Ditto. I love most genres but total metal head.
I’m not sure if you know or not, but Steve Perry had a solo career as well. My favorite song from his early solo is Oh, Sherry. Check it out
This song was written by Johnathan Cain for his then wife daughter of actor Doug McClure.
For the best power ballad check out Steelheart's "I'll Never Let You Go"
One of my absolute favorites. 🥰
I was lucky enough to see them!! Best concert ever!!
You need to give a listen to Journey's - Mother Father. ✌️👍
Please do "Who's Crying Now" by Journey.
Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald - 'On My Own !! This is a big banger !!
You should listen to Bad English, when the band broke up , the band went with John Waite. That's a great band as well to listen too.
what THIS man said!!
Was at that concert. Wish I still had the shirt. I guess the shirt wasn't made to last 40 years. Lol
Steve Perry has been my favorite single artist since like 1979. Sadly I never did get to see him in concert. I would love to see him just once before my time on earth is done. He is def one of the greatest of all times
I love how you are like a mentor to young rappers coming up.
You don't just hear Steve Perry's songs you feel them, he gives his soul❤
This song was used in the video of the USS Holland home port change in ‘92. Standing on that pier watching the ship pull away with the love of my life was hard. This song captures everything a military family experiences.
it's great to see the younger generations enjoying the music that i grew up with from the 1970's and 1980's.
Hey G Colo! Love your reactions when you are on with Black Pegasus!
Love Journey Steve Perry the voice love this song all journey songs with Steve Perry ! Hey guys 👍
Awesome reaction
One of my all-time favorite from journey every time I listen to this tune in my radio car I blast it brings back memories when I saw them back in 86
Bob Seger "Turn the Page" is an on-the-road song, and soooo good. As a traveler, I think you would really relate to that one. You're doing great BTW!
My absolute fav journey song ❤️ steve perry one of the best voices of all time! Thank you for covering this one! Love watching you guys react to the classics!
