They still used studio tricks even back then. Sort of effects that make a vocalist sound much better than the actually sound live. This is not live, btw. It is a video of their radio version of the song. I love Boston, but people are making claims that aren't true. (Edit: also I don't mean to take away from Brad Delp at all. He has one of the best voices I have ever heard in my life, and frederickdavidson270 is totally right. It is jaw-droppingly good. He needs no tricks to make him sound better. In a studio environment that's just what happens to make the best sounding version of your song. Vocal doubling, chorus effects, reverb, harmonizing with yourself, etc.)
This is the song that when you hear it, whether it's the first time or the 500th time, it makes you smile and it makes you happy. It makes you think about the best things that you can think about.... The music is just so good and the voice that voice... Awesome
My dad grew up with Brad Delp (lead singer) they were great friends for years and years. We all grew up in the same town. They are still one of my favorite bands today and my millennial and Gen Z kids know the words to all their songs ❤
Love it when the younger generation(s) gets exposure to classic music that we grew up with, and to have them dig it. Lead singer Brad Delp's voice is iconic of the 70's and early 80's through Boston and other groups he had been with.
So jealous of folks discovering Boston for the first time. There's nothing like hearing stuff like this for the first time. 48 years later, I STILL drop everything to play air-guitar and hammer my steering wheel into an oval.
I'm 62 years old now and this came out in my teens high school years! And that was in the 70's! I've always said the greatest music to come out was the 70's! I bet you younger people won't be hearing today's music 50 years from now!! But I love that you younger people are keeping it alive who knows you might interest your grandchildren one day!! ❤🎷🎤🎵🎸🎶
Guitarist Tom Scholz is a certified genius. Got his degree from MIT, and worked as an engineer at Polaroid before forming the band. He wrote and recorded most of the debut album in his basement. He even invented some recording interfaces for guitar. Brad Delp is definitely a top tier vocalist.
He also built all of his own guitar effects, which is why his distortion sounds were so unique for the time. He invented to power soak (to get distortion/overdrive from an amp while keeping the volume low) and the Rockman series of pedals/outboard gear.
I love when you put this music in front of the young ones especially G. He is always so intelligent in his comments and incredibly respectful. I just love his energy.
This song... that album is permanently burned into my generation's memory. It takes me back to drinking Lowenbrau beers with all my friends talking about how insane this album was. The came Heart.. then Journey and shortly after Van Halen. Man... those were the days.
i remember sitting on the carpet at a middle school friend's house listening to this song (and others) on this newly released album... Not long after this movie called Star Wars came out. The world was quickly changing around us... And we loved being in the middle of it all!
I just listened to American Top 40 this week in 1977. Transported me right back to that summer. ELO, Eagles, Frampton, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller Band, etc. so good.
I'm the youngest of three kids, my sisters are 5 and 7 years older than me. They were both at the University of Florida and when I was in eighth grade, I went to Gainesville by bus to see them. By car, back then it would have been maybe 3 1/2 hours, four at the outside. But by bus- I think it was at least 10 hrs. So when I was all confirmed and waiting on the day to come, my sisters sent me a tape. THIS album. The letter said not to listen till I was on the bus (with my walkman, heh), and I did as told. Wow, what an experience. I will never forget it.
The way he describes playing music. That had always been me to start my days and end my nights. Throughout my day. Love my BOSTON!! One of my top 10 favorite bands.
I bought this album when it came out, still have it and you can definitely see a half century’s wear and tear on it. One of the best Rock albums of all time.
60 year old here..just hit me that when I grew up listening to this song the lyrics are exactly what I feel now." It's More then a feeling when I hear that old song they used to play, I begin dreaming.." SO Crazy sitting hear and watching you both react 48 years later just blows my mind!! THXS
69 here and this takes me right back to high school! In my little blue bug. I could lay rubber with that thing! Those were the days. Hey BP! A lady who went by the name of Melanie. She recorded a song named “Those Were The Days “. Check it out. It really delivers the Hippie attitude.
I met my later to be husband during this time. Lots of making out to this and other Boston songs😊😊We were married in '76 and together til he passed in 2022. God I miss him even more when I hear the music of our youth. Still love you baby ❤ always will.
I just subscribed to your site. I was 18 when this song came out in 1976. Today I am 66 and it is very interesting that you mostly listen to the music I grew up with. No AutoTune, just pure talent from skill and singing from the heart. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the tune I grew up with. Perhaps you can understand why we say " We had the Best of Music, Cars and Great Women".
Saw Boston in concert in 1987 and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen (more than 3,000) to this day! I was 6 when this came out and his vice gets me every time.
I love it when you bring these young people on your channel and they fall in love with the music the same way we did, and the same way you did! It's awesome!
Yes you reacted to it but sharing it with someone gets you agsin! You are a part of the music , you are swept into another dimension and rise higher every time you hear these masterpieces❤❤❤❤it’s never to late!
I hear this song and go back to how it felt when it came on the radio. You might be driving or partying or even just hanging out at home and it always gave you a special feeling.
My favorite Boston song is Foreplay/Long Time, due to the sheer genius of the choices of instrumentations. Keyboarding that sounds like an organ, nothing but handclapping and acoustic guitar in some places, and the always fantastic electric guitar. All to go along with that incredible voice. It's truly one of a kind.
This was my era and I owned this album, saw them in concert and I’ve probably heard this song 1000’s of times…… it still sounds as mind blowing now as it did then.
Of course life was simpler when you were 8. And there is just as good music today as there was then, just as there was terrible music then and now too. You just have to find it because there is so much more out there. (btw, I'm the same age as you)
I was born in 1972, so yes, this is "my" music.... I'm so happy that you remind the generations before us that we were cool and had the best music.. times were so simple then... GEN X ❤ last generation without a phone in our hands 24/7.. to play outside... and just have an interesting life...
I sit here and watch all of you getting into the music I grew up with, and the memories are just rolling! And I hate to say it,but you've barely scratched the surface. KEEP PLAYING!🥳
Damn .........from 1976 to to 1979 we had Boston , Atlanta Rythm Section (ARS ) , the Eagles , Steve Miller Band , ELO , Marshall Tucker Band .......just off the top of my head ........thats just the bands that broke the moulds and come out and set the bar , bands that not only Rocked and Jammed but found a groove with their fans or anyone that would take the time to listen. Another reason I bring these Bands up is because their songs were making their way into country and Honkey Tonk Bars and I ahould know because my Dad would stop in to have a couple on days we finished a job early or we got rained out of work , giving me a chance to work on my pool game while dropping quarters in the Juke Box and finding my own groove.
Used to sit in my room with headphones on and the windows open door closed and getting ready to interact with the song that was coming up Smokin …. 😁I’m 62.
Their whole debut album is on my playlist! Most of my listening is still 70s and 80s. I don't even listen to my own music on my regular mix. I'm a keyboardist, so my favorite from that album is Foreplay / Long Time.
We had the best music in the 70’s! My college days were filled with disco, ballads, hard rock, and great country! So glad you young people are loving it! Gail
One of the greatest debut albums ever…it’d be a challenge to find its equal. So many memories just jammin to this song, & other classic rock tunes cruisin the strip on the weekends in my 72 Barracuda back in the mid-80s.😎🤘🔥
My hometown band. This album is pure perfection - from start to finish. Not a dog in the bunch, as my Aunt Barbara would say. I love watching yougin's appreciating the pure genius of this masterpiece much like I did back in the summer of 76. Thanks for the reaction and the memories... Ah, to be 16 again.☺
Effortless.... I'm 68 we were so spoiled, we had natural talent, creative word poets, effortless singers and people who only wanted to share their hopes, dreams, God given talents with like minded people. I was born and raised in Southern California who had THE best D.J.'s (disc jockeys) on the local radio stations. They turned us on to different types of incredible new musicians!!! We couldn't get enough and we were hungry for more!!! We had the music studios in LA, we had the radio stations in LA, we had the record stores in LA. We had the best concerts in LA. (Los Angeles). It was a dream come true for kids like me, it was Heaven on Earth!!!! Like I said SPOILED, in a very good way!!! I've been going back over the 70's part of my playlist recently, aside from Boston 'Rock Brigade' by Def Leppard came on, such a great era, had me reminiscing!
Lead guitar graduated from MIT , worked for Polaroid and built a 16 track recording studio in his basement. He and lead vocals wrote and recorded the whole album just the two of them . They put the band together after they signed the record deal
Tom brought in Brad to do the vocals after he had most of the music recorded. Tom, I don’t believe did the drums, but pretty much everything else. Brad to my knowledge never wrote any of the songs. @@frederickdavidson270Sorry dude, but I knew Brad and that was all him.

BEST.... ERA.... EVER.... ❤ 😉 😊 ... 🎸 !!!
Brad Delp had one of those voices that simply couldn't be matched together with Tom Sholts was simply magic.

Should've seen them in concert...simply amazing

You know you are classic when all ages are astonished at the talent
One of the greatest songs of the 70's
Amazing talent, good music. We didnt know how fortunate we were. Todays music doesnt cut it.
