What’s sad is that New Super Mario Bros U is the best one in the NSMB series by far, yet nobody gave it any love or attention. Maybe it was the fact it was on the Wii U, and we had two NSMB games that same year. To me, that is a crying shame, as to me, it’s one of the best 2D mario titles I am glad that the game has become far more beloved in recent years.

One of the most disappointing things about this game is world 8. I like the idea of remaking old levels in a lava theme-that would’ve been really cool. Sadly, the short length of this world makes it very anticlimactic. The final bowser fight is especially disappointing because all you do is hit bowser in the head three times. I loved in nsmbwii when bowser chases you as the finale; what better way to end a platforming game than by sending the player through an epic final gauntlet with intense music and a terrifying boss? The ending of nsmbu doesn’t get my adrenaline going like that unfortunately.
Boost mode is genuinely really fun with the challenges in the OG version on Wii U with a buddy. The spontaneous “teamwork” can both be pretty funny and very satisfying when the level is finished. The other modes are also pretty fun though
This game is so underrated, I used to watch the videos on yt about it when I was young. When I got my switch it was the first game i bought. I just wish it was longer
This game gets way too much hate, yeah it reuses the world themes, but they make them into really creative spins, like how the grassland has a bunch of snow mountains, abd themed around acorns, the desert being themed around desserts, then jungle being giant, the mountains looking like spectacles, the beach being in a rocky grotto, the sky being above the mushroom kingdom so you see the gumdrop mountains peaking through, and the lava world being peaches castle. This is the best one in the series in my opinion. It's so fun and I love the backgrounds, music, creativity and everything else
There are very good reasons why to start in a plain and not a mountain or ice world: it's, well, plain. Newcomers have to start learning how to play, mountain and ice worlds require you to understand walking and jumping mechanics fairly well, including inertia, while plain worls only requir eyou to understand walking and a bit of jumping.
Just like you, SMBU was the first game I got for the WiiU and I got it for Christmas on the same year the game released. So looking back on this game was really nostalgic. This is a great game, i played last year and was very surprised because of the hate the game gets. The only problem is the similarity withe the other 3 games, besides this its nearly a perfect Mario game
Honestly, I'm pretty sure a large part of it is the star coins. A lot of the star coins are in abhorrent locations that you could never find on your own without looking it up, or running into every wall in the entire level after not seeing it on your first run through. The timer makes it very difficult to spend time looking for secrets as well, which is probably why they opted to remove it entirely in Wonder. Star Coins were more based around platforming challenges in DS and NSMB2 rather than being hidden in walls.
I also wanted to add, I think the one thing that holds this game down is that it slowly became less good as it got to the end, meanwhile the Wii version starts off rather weak but gets better and ends phenomenal.

NSMB Wii will always hold a special place in my heart, being the first video game I ever played back in 2009 for my 7th birthday. Even through the 2010's I still played it a lot and eventually got masterfully good at it as well as my friends being good at it which made for a VERY fun experience throughout my childhood. Now a days I'm a PC player, but I still love Nintendo. Regardless, when I first got this game, it gave me similar vibes and feels to the Wii version that I loved so much, this game is great.
I love the new super mario bros series. It may just be my nostolgia for it but I've always had a great time. I remember being excited for nsmbu after playing it on a walmart wiiu kiosk. So much time has passed
As odd as Desert to Snow world is, that's actually kinda realistic though. Washington State has the mountains that catch all the moisture from the ocean and most of it rains down, so on the east of the mountain range you end up with a desert. Not that this world map had that level of thought put into it.
Everyone I talked to who played this game, enjoyed this game when it came out. Many times taking a complete pause from their "main game" to have played this game. It was refreshing at the time and a solid game overall.
What makes this game for me memorable is the graphics, just in the first world the big mountain in the background. It’s something different than these high colourful pillars in all the other mario games.
Even though I just came across your videos, I gotta say they are amazing! I thought you were like a huge youtuber or something since all your videos go into such detail but I‘m just kinda shocked as to why you have so little followers. Keep the great content up!
Since nobody's talking about it and it's driving me insane, the misnumbering of Sparkling Waters and Frosted Glacier is driving me nuts. In-game, they're actually referred to as W3 and W4 respectively, not the other way around, so W1's secret level has a W3 theme instead of a W4 theme. It's just a nitpick but it was driving me coocoo.
a missed oppurtunity for the koopalings airship is that it could have had a bit of level before the fight, kind of like the stall there is getting launched onto the airship, or idk an auto scroller like an airship level using different themes present with the koopalings and their ship.
I believe this game is great and is overhated and blindly at that because after getting another within the same year of another, (NSMB2) people just disconnected from the series and hate on it because "hur hur another nsmb game" and don't give this good game a chance. Even with Super Mario Bros. Wonder out now there's still good reasons to come back to this game.
I love all the New Super Mario Bros series, in fact I really miss the series because of Nintendo's inactivity towards it that I go out and download rom hacks of the game for Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS
I don't think that it's a bad game, or even a bad Mario game, it's just generic. Same overall artstyle from the previous game, similar music, same collectables, same enemies with the same design... It simply wasn't enough. NSMB and NSMBW at least looked vastly different, with NSMB being on the DS and NSMBW being on the Wii. But this? NSMBU was basically NSMBW in HD.
If you look at screenshots between the two games you’d know that’s complete hogwash. U’s backgrounds are significantly more detailed and colourful. Just look at the background of 1-1 in both games. It’s night and day.
I have been replaying all the Mario games that I couldn’t beat as a kid and it’s wonderfully nostalgic. Never had a wii u or 3ds or switch so I haven’t played the newer ones but I should
In future Mario Bros games they should repeat the classic Bowser face-off as always, but when pressing the Switch instead it is the ground beneath Mario that disappears and in cartoon fashion he looks at the disappearing ground, then at Bowser, then at you like -_- then gravity kicks in again
i finished it today and i liked it a lot. not sure if i like it better than world since i haven't touched that game in ages, but definitely more than all the 3d mario games i played (bar 3d world, which is been amazing so far). looks really good, the soundtrack is amazing and the levels were for the most part very interesting
It’s easily the best “New” game, and I’ve been there from the start. The backgrounds, visuals, and level design beat the others. The challenge is also there as well. It paired with Luigi U is a great play through on Switch especially. Honestly I would say it’s in my top 3 favorite 2D Mario’s.
I don’t hate it, I actually really like it. It just felt like each new entry in the NSMB series never added anything new to make it stand out. The best they really did was add one new item that was a gimmick for a few select levels.
to say that painted swampland is the best map is absolutely LUDICROUS. it's beautiful, breathtaking even, BUT BY GOD WAS IT FUCKING NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT.
It’s not bad, it just feels too… simple, it feels like an expansion for new super Mario bros wii instead of a actual new game, mainly because the biomes are the same, the only thing that changed were the world map and the visuals, honestly I think I understand how everyone feels about nsmb games, they are good, but feel the same, it feels like playing the same game but with different levels, they should at least introduce new biomes like instead of a grass biome they could do something different
When I was like 7 or 8 I wanted this game for the Wii U so bad since I already had Mario 3D World. I didn't get the game until recently when I saw the Wii U version at the store for a relatively cheap price.
It is my favourite Mario game, especially the graphics, they are just insane. The only problem I have with it is that most bosses are way too easy. Take a look at Lemmy, Larry, Kamek, Wendy and all BoomBoom battles and compare them with previous games. They are just too easy
Have you played Newer Super Mario Bros Wii? It's a mod of the Wii game that has new story, new levels and new world maps, also new enemies for example Shy Guys.
Despite playing all the other NSMBs games I have only ever completed the Luigi U part of this game and really loved that. Challenging 100 second stages with new controls felt really fresh for me.
I know some people might disagree with me on this but when I first got the game on the Wii U I went to play it and I was disappointed that they remove the Overworld athletic theme. The new super mario bros series was known for their athletic theme and Overworld Theme remix. When this game came out I was disappointed because I really like the athletic theme and Overworld theme from new Super Mario Brothers Wii. I'm not the biggest fan of the music in this game. I'm happy that they have different world themes. But I wish they would have kept athletic theme and Overworld theme in the levels
Honestly I think all of the new Super Mario Bros games are good in their own right they were the best part of early 2000s with Mario besides the the other 3D Mario games like Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Sunshine but still these were also pretty good games as well
This game I got on the Switch and it’s a great game. I love the Van Goah art. It’s a bit easy. I wish the game was harder. Or. If there was an adult version. The boss levels were actually harder than the actual bosses.
I actually do like U. I actually have a bunch of nostalgia with I. I know I’m probably just gonna have people calling me out saying “you only like this game because of nostalgia”. Though besides that, it honestly has genuine fun mechanics (like the baby yoshis and the worlds are kinda creative.) and the koopalings aren’t just “the same boss AGAIN”. Pretty good game. Not that memorable, but still pretty good lmao
As a game itself, no The problem was that the “new” super Mario bros series was getting repetitive. However, It’s still a decent game that I would recommend.
You know what's funny about this game? It's that... I never grew up with the Old Super Mario Bros. Games, the only other 2D Mario game I played was Super Mario World. When I was young, my first interactions with Mario's sidescrolling adventures were the NSMB series. And when I grew up as a result, I just couldn't go back to the old classics. They felt naked without any of the vast improvements these games made to the formula. Ground pounding, wall jumping, Star Coins, Triple jumping, multi-player cooperation, red rings, various enemy types and stage hazards that pale in comparison. It's not that the old games are bad, it just made me realize that the NSMB series did a lot more than the detractors think. U in particular is a marvelous game. Not only are the levels built for multiple players at once but the Challenge modes as well. When you factor it all in, you start to notice how precise and well-thought out the design and stage layouts are. How many awesome level gimmicks they were able to squeeze into one stage. How deviously they can hide a secret exit or Star Coin if they put their minds to it and how much fun you can have either blazing through a level nimbly avoiding hazards or taking it slowly and exploring the stage to your heart's content. This was a game that I never grew up with. I played it for the first time with 2019's Deluxe version. It was a true follow up to 2009's NSMB Wii even if I found that game better. I'm glad to see that slowly but surely. The Public perception of these games is improving little by little. I'm excited for Mario's inevitable next 2D outing but I hope that it doesn't abandon everything that made these games great trying to reinvent the wheel.
I enjoyed playing Mario U but playing it right after Wii made things a little less uninteresting. Plus the secrets in this game are worse to find, finding secrets is either an invisible wall, invisible block with a vine, or in one level, flying up an open space of a level with no indication of a secret

Great job my guy! One banger of a video!
Just found your channel last night I like it.
a missed oppurtunity for the koopalings airship is that it could have had a bit of level before the fight, kind of like the stall there is getting launched onto the airship, or idk an auto scroller like an airship level using different themes present with the koopalings and their ship.
Its Bescially The NSMBDS and NSMBWii Sercet Cannons
They should based it off the NSMB2 Secert cannons where there is a level before the secert World
7:34 "could you imagine an entire world based on this van gogh style"....
Mario Wonder: Hold my mushroom
I believe this game is great and is overhated and blindly at that because after getting another within the same year of another, (NSMB2) people just disconnected from the series and hate on it because "hur hur another nsmb game" and don't give this good game a chance. Even with Super Mario Bros. Wonder out now there's still good reasons to come back to this game.
I love all the New Super Mario Bros series, in fact I really miss the series because of Nintendo's inactivity towards it that I go out and download rom hacks of the game for Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS
Honestly thought through the quality of this video you'd have at least 100k subs great work and just liked and subscribed 👍
Never had a wii u or 3ds or switch so I haven’t played the newer ones but I should
This is the first mario game i ever played, it will always hold a special place in my heart
Same
In future Mario Bros games they should repeat the classic Bowser face-off as always, but when pressing the Switch instead it is the ground beneath Mario that disappears and in cartoon fashion he looks at the disappearing ground, then at Bowser, then at you like -_- then gravity kicks in again
i finished it today and i liked it a lot. not sure if i like it better than world since i haven't touched that game in ages, but definitely more than all the 3d mario games i played (bar 3d world, which is been amazing so far).
looks really good, the soundtrack is amazing and the levels were for the most part very interesting
Keep up the great work man, another great video :D
It’s easily the best “New” game, and I’ve been there from the start. The backgrounds, visuals, and level design beat the others. The challenge is also there as well. It paired with Luigi U is a great play through on Switch especially. Honestly I would say it’s in my top 3 favorite 2D Mario’s.
I love it. My family loves it. Every time we have the opportunity to play it as a group, we enjoy the chaos ❤️
Same here. I had this game on WiiU, and now I have it on Switch for this reason!
Thank you, finally someone reviewed this well.
Everyone on you tube just copy past each other and say dont buy
I’m convinced now im buying this one 👍🏻
One thing I really love about this game is Star Coin hunting
Great channel man, subscribed!
I don’t hate it, I actually really like it. It just felt like each new entry in the NSMB series never added anything new to make it stand out. The best they really did was add one new item that was a gimmick for a few select levels.
to say that painted swampland is the best map is absolutely LUDICROUS. it's beautiful, breathtaking even, BUT BY GOD WAS IT FUCKING NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT.
loved the outro! (and the video)
I loved this game when I was younger even though I never had it myself
u are gay
I love the squirrels
i love your videos bro keep it up!
The product of milking an ip.
L
@@samusaran7317 🤣🤣🤣
@@elpiedra1596 Cool story dude
No it doesn’t
I also love how all the backgrounds in the game are completely revamped
Dude, I agree completely about the world map. It was nostalgic and fresh at the same time. One of the most important parts of this game.
The U stands for Underrated not Underwhelming
was waiting for this video🙏 just found your channel and got into your videos and i love them. keep up the good work❤️
This game is expensive. It is a beauty though. The game should be 30 - 40 dollars or even a FREE download on the switch. Shame on you Nintendo.
When I was like 7 or 8 I wanted this game for the Wii U so bad since I already had Mario 3D World. I didn't get the game until recently when I saw the Wii U version at the store for a relatively cheap price.
This game was amazing and if it was a standalone game not connected to the others, people would love it more
Like It couldhave Been New Super Mario World the start of the Mario World Era of New
I’ve been playing this for years and had no idea about the secret levels until now lol
It is my favourite Mario game, especially the graphics, they are just insane. The only problem I have with it is that most bosses are way too easy. Take a look at Lemmy, Larry, Kamek, Wendy and all BoomBoom battles and compare them with previous games. They are just too easy
Yeah. But there are some great ones too. At least they actually have mid bosses unlike Wonder.
Have you played Newer Super Mario Bros Wii? It's a mod of the Wii game that has new story, new levels and new world maps, also new enemies for example Shy Guys.
I love this game, the wii one, ds, and new super Mario bros 2
I play super mario u delux i never noticed the the music theme in peaches castle is just a faster version than the one in mario 64
Despite playing all the other NSMBs games I have only ever completed the Luigi U part of this game and really loved that. Challenging 100 second stages with new controls felt really fresh for me.
This is not a bad game by ANY means, its a good game just like the others.
This is an amazing game it was just stuck in the new super mario bros trope
By the way Sparkling Waters is World 3 and Frosted Glacier is World 4, to point a mistake mentioned in your script
It's a great standalone game, but its stale when you consider its predecessors
I could never enjoy it again in the same way, but it was the most fun I have ever had on a game. From watching gameplay to playing it myself as a kid.
As a game itself, no
The problem was that the “new” super Mario bros series was getting repetitive. However, It’s still a decent game that I would recommend.
I remember always needing luigi and his npc super guide when fighting bowser when i was 4-5 💀
You know what's funny about this game?
I love tis video bc this is my fav ario when i was was little i didn't have a wii or wii u so i watched videos on youtube and i just feel in love of the game then in 2022 mom got me the plus a nintendo swich so what im saying here you did a fucking goof job mikster
