    I prefer zinc based base or even phosphoric acid for curing some minor rust before painting it all over. Allow the solution to react with the metal for the recommended time. You might see the surface darken as the phosphate layer forms. And maybe it is better to dip small metal pieces in paint? Much better coating- evan some hidden areas. Advice: sand down sharp edges- they are prone to start rusting because of thin layer of paint...

    OK . . . prepping bare steel would be best done with phosphoric acid. Wipe it off, then primer. I have no issue with etch primer out of the can. It's your best simple choice. You should have just sprayed your black over the etch, nothing else needed to be done and the end result would be no different. I've been doing automotive restorations for over 40 years.

      Cool I never thought of using phosphoric acid before. I’ll definitely give it a try in the future
