This has been really helpful. My 10 year old son has huge anxiety about travelling. It used to be long distances but now it's any journey even a short way away. He is terrified pf becoming ill and not able to get back home. Thankfully he manages to go to school but it has definitely escalated over the past year. We have an appointment with a professional at the end of the month but it's all just taking time. Meanwhile he struggles so much on a day to day basis. I would love simple strategies that help him work through 'the monster' as you describe it, and help him to break down his fears to see the reality of them, ie that he is focused on the worst case scenario and it is unlikely to happen. He is missing out on so much l.
I am so sorry he is missing out on so much. I am not a therapist but I do think its great you are seeing someone. I dont really know that aspect of anxiety so sorry. But I do want him to be able to enjoy life. My big question is has he tried any real calming and mindfulness strategies.
@carolinemaguire4281 Thank you so much for replying. Yes he did a short 6 week group course on skills to use and it was really good. He engaged with it really well. But he does struggle to use them when he is actually in an anxiety 'emergency'. I think I just need to keep talking to him about them and reinforcing them. Do you have any good resources for mindfulness you could recommend?
Do you have videos on how/what to teach regarding social skills? Bullet points/step by step skills on How to start a conversation, how to know/what to look for if the other person is receptive or not, how to keep the friendship going if it seems like things are going well, how to not sabatage progress, etc. I know for me, I also have autism which makes it very hard to read social cues, body language and facial expressions. It's helped me a bit to have scripts, so I don't have to try and think of something to say, or worse saying the absolute wrong thing. I would LOVE to have a list of scripts for different situations ...
Yes she does, but the videos are not in a format that you'd expect. Go through her videos and look at the titles. She's got a playlist called Living With ADHD & Thriving that includes this video and others on different strategies for social situations. The one called Are You A Social Spy is about "Reading the Room." There's another one called Secret Social Strategies that might help, too. There's also a playlist called Building a conversation that is a series of shorts with some longer videos interspersed that could possibly help. She's got 4 years worth of content, so you're bound to find something in them that can help. Good luck.
YES for sure. If you check out the building the conversation play list that might help. I haven't made one about how to read cues step by step but I absolutely can. And if you check out my book Why Will No One Play WIth Me? that has step by step how to be your child's social coach. That is full of scripts. Its hard to put scripts in you tube. I will work on the social cues stuff. That's easy. The reply below is absolutely right.
