    Kind of a follow-up to my last chain of comments, but also a big FYI with some of the negatives with the Steam Deck. Disclaimer, I absolutely love my Steam Deck and the positives heavily outweigh the negatives. This in no way is meant to shit on the device in any way. But I thought it might be nice for those still waiting to get one to have a heads up about some of the negatives to expect. Now, Valve has been on the ball with updates and likely many of these issues will be ironed out, hopefully that's the case.
    - Transferring files from your PC to the Steam Deck is a very slow process. You will need to carve out dedicated time to transfer bigger/multiple files.
    - You have to launch every game while you're in Wi-Fi range after you download them. If you don't it can't download necessary patches and it might render the game unplayable. Not really a big deal, but you will need to uninstall and reinstall. Kinda stinks if you're on the go and don't have access to internet (you know, cause its a handheld).
    - Doesn't dock to every monitor. It'll work on some and not others. Personally, I wish it worked on the monitor in my room. Thankfully it works on my portable monitor. Not sure why it doesn't just work on all of them equally. When it doesn't work it slows down to a crawl and visuals and audio gets very choppy.
    - Wired X-Box controllers sometimes takes 10~15 minutes to connect despite being plugged in. Sometimes it works right away and other times you need to patiently wait. No rhyme or reason, it works when it wants to.
    -The virtual keyboard doesn't always input the letter, number, or symbol you type. You can connect a physical keyboard to solve this issue. But in my experience, sometimes the virtual keyboard blocks the field you're typing in and when you put the virtual keyboard away often times you realize the words you know you typed wasn't recognized despite hearing the sound effect and seeing the visual cues that you hit the proper keys when typing in the field.
    - Arguably too big to be a handheld. I know silly, but hear me out. The Steam Deck is a lot bigger than I thought it would be and I watched a ton of videos before mine came in the mail. Its hard to really understand the size of this thing till you hold it in your hand and try to find shelf space for this thing (yes this really happened to me, lol). The thing is, this will not fit into a pocket of any kind. At least with the Switch I can put the device itself in one pocket and the Joy-Con in the other. You will need a bag for the Steam Deck, unless you want to carry the thing in your hand(s). It really limits where you can and sometimes want to take this thing.
    Again, I want to stress this list is not meant to scare people away from buying a Steam Deck. This is just to give people a heads up of some of the real issues I've had with the device for the short amount of time I've had it. I love the Steam Deck and it was worth every penny I spent on it. I'm stunned at how well it plays a game like Elden Ring when its 1/3 the size of a laptop for less than $1,000. Truly this is a bargain, almost a steal of a deal. All the same, it would be valuable to know what you're getting into as well.

    Harman the brainlet does realise that the Steam Deck is with a little bit of work capable of emulating pretty much EVERY Nintendo console out there including the Switch AND run those games at higher framerates and resolutions than the Switch ever could also since the Steam Deck is an open platform you can put other storefronts such as GOG, Origin and UPlay etc etc, also it's main objective is to encourage other people to enter the handheld hardware business, the Steam Deck got to 3rd place on the weekly sales chart based on £/$5 reservations ALONE, also consider that orders were backed up for 9 MONTHS, so I'd say the Steam Deck will be a success.

  • @TurkeyFaceX
    @TurkeyFaceX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As an all around gamer, one who has a Switch and a reservation for the Steam Deck, videos like the one you're responding to are hard to watch. Its like he put zero effort into researching the product he was attempting to bash. Its hard to believe he's an author when he can't be bothered to write a scripted take on the subject matter. If he put in the required effort to properly make a valid point it would be one thing.
    For example, if the point of his video was that the Steam Deck won't slow down Switch sales. Then backed it up with a claim like the two devices target different audiences. Nintendo's Switch targets a more casual crowd wanting a simple pick up and play experience where the Steam Deck is more for gaming PC enthusiasts that want a portable device. Elaborating on how the two devices are different from one another and how one won't affect the other much in sales, then he would have a point. In this way he wouldn't be bashing the Steam Deck with uneducated assumptions and instead defending Nintendo with actual research and not attacking the other platform with baseless assumptions.

    • @po801_4
      @po801_4  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's a really good argument that you can make a video on. While both the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch are handheld gaming devices, the 2 are radically different in many ways. Like you said, the Switch targets more casual gamers with a library of games that anyone can pick up and play along with offering games for more experienced gamers while the Deck targets the PC playerbase due to its larger library, customisation options, and it having features that you would find on a PC.
      Harman could have made a video explaining that while the Steam Deck is a good piece of hardware, it may not surpass the Switch due to the Deck being a niche product that targets a certain group of people and is only sold in one place where as the Switch is a device meant for everyone and that anyone can pick it up almost anywhere. It could have been a well written argument had he took the time to research the topic and provided good evidence to support his argument. Instead, he made a terrible response where he bashes a guy who made a video explaining what the Steam Deck is and it seems like a better product on paper than the Switch. I wish I can say that Harman changes in his later videos but that would be a lie.

    • @TurkeyFaceX
      @TurkeyFaceX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@po801_4 Right? The comparison is obvious, they're both portable gaming devices that can be docked which is why so many people compare the two. But a deeper dive into what these platforms offer reveals that they are quite different and can appeal to different people. To prove I'm not all talk I've provided a list of how these devices differentiate from one another. I've listed details from my research and tried to form an unbiased comparison of the two devices listing their pros and cons. Harman could have structured his argument like this to better explain the differences between the two platforms and why one won't affect the sales of the other much. In this way he could still defend the Switch with actual research by proving the audience is different for the two platforms and therefore one device's success in sales won't harm the other's potential.
      Prices:
      Switch
      The entry for the platform itself is cheaper than the Steam Deck. Starting at $200 and going up to $350, the Switch at every tier is a more affordable point of entry and even more so if you only plan on buying one or two games for the device. And while the Switch itself is cheaper, the games on Switch are generally more expensive. The Indie titles are usually quite affordable, and the third party games often go on sale. But Nintendo IPs are almost always a full $60 and rarely go on sale. The few times they are on a sale, they don't normally go bellow 30% off, usually once in the summer and again for the holidays.
      Steam Deck
      The Steam Deck starts at $400 and can be $650 for the higher storage option. And while the point of entry is more expensive games tend to be far more affordable. Often times sales will drop games to 50% off all the way to 90% off. This happens regularly throughout the year and these types of sales are abundant during the summer and winter sales usually around June/July and December/January respectively. Although, the price of games might not even be an obstacle as everyone who orders a Deck needs a Steam account. This means they likely already have several games they already own that can be downloaded right to the platform.
      Games:
      Switch
      The great thing about the Switch is that all games on the platform are optimized to run on the Switch. You shouldn't have any issues with a game running and your experience should be seamless either docked or in handheld form. The Switch's performance is another story as its running on 5 year old hardware. This means many 3rd party games that can be played on other platforms often times don't look as great on the Switch with lower framerates and blurry visuals. Nintendo's IPs look and play great on the platform and are easily the Switch's greatest draw. If you like Nintendo games the Switch has many quality experiences like Zelda Breath of the Wild and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate being some of the best games to be released in the past decade and are exclusive to Nintendo platforms.
      Steam Deck
      The Steam Deck has a verification system as not all games are optimized for the platform. This system comes in three tiers. Verified means the game should run flawlessly (although I have heard some people still have trouble even in this tier from time to time). Playable means it can still be enjoyed on the Deck and lists some common issues one might experience while playing. Finally, unsupported means the game likely won't work (unless you either know how to fiddle with it or watch a tutorial on how others managed to get the game to work). The Steam Deck has a massive library spanning multiple console generations, so while not every game is optimized for the platform the options are endless and finding a game that suits your taste is somewhere in the store or already sitting in your library. Additionally many X-Box and Playstation games have recently been added to the platform too, so if you're a fan of God of War or Cuphead both are Verified games and are fantastic experiences most would love to have on their Deck.
      Online:
      Switch
      The Switch has a lot to be desired when it comes to its online service. There are two tiers with their online offerings. The lowest tier starts you at at $20/year and the higher tier costs $50/year. Its online play leaves much to be desired as games often times are so broken they're unplayable. Nintendo clearly prioritized games like Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros. when it comes to having a smooth online experience. Unfortunately, other games didn't fair so well being supported with optimal online gameplay. Their online service also grants access to several classic platforms such as the NES and SNES for the lower tier and if you're paying for the higher tier you also get to play Sega Genesis, and N64. Many classic platforms are oddly absent from these offerings like the Gamecube, Wii and all the handhelds.
      Steam Deck
      Steam has the best price a gamer could ask for to play online, its free. Games generally work perfectly depending on if it has rollback support and if the user has good online connection. Not much more needs to be said here.
      Other Features:
      Switch
      The Switch doesn't offer much outside of its phenomenal games. It does have a few streaming apps, but there are many unavailable that were on even Nintendo's older hardware and their absence here is odd. It does have a TH-cam app as well as Hulu, Funimation, Twitch, and Pokémon TV. It also has a built in news app that helps its users stay up to date on all things Nintendo like when a Direct drops and has all the latest game trailers coming to the platform.
      Steam Deck
      This is where the Steam Deck truly shines and really differentiates itself from the Switch. Not only is it a gaming machine, but its a full computer running on Linux. So as you would imagine, as a computer the supporting features are too many to count. But to briefly summarize some of the ones most people are likely to use, here are just a small handful of things possible using its Desktop Mode. I'm not too familiar with Linux so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. It likely can run every streaming service imaginable. Pretty much all browsers should work. Media players like VLC run on the platform if you have music or videos you would like to enjoy. Emulation can expand your gaming library if you have legally obtained games. And not sure if other platforms like Epic store will work but its worth a shot.
      Conclusion:
      Both platforms have a lot to offer and are great devices depending on what you're looking for. Nintendo's Switch is a great device for more casual gamers and its pick up and play philosophy makes it easy to jump in without needing to mess with settings. Its first party IPs are the major draw as Nintendo has some of the most iconic series in all of gaming. The Steam Deck is a more sophisticated piece of hardware that appeals to the hardcore PC gamer that doesn't mind fiddling to better optimize their games for a better more premium experience. The Steam Deck's ability to become a computer also lends itself to having more overall options if that's what you're looking for. The two devices target a different audience and therefore won't take away sales from the other.

      Yes. And then the Wii happened. And all that went out the window. I mean the Wii was a very good console, but that’s the reason why Nintendo got the reputation of being underpowered. Also I’m not sure if this is the case, but I feel like the Wii U was made without Nintendo having the ps4 and Xb1 in mind and instead made a console that just managed to be more powerful than the Xbox 360 and ps3 which is why it was so underpowered. But the switch is something I don’t get. They did manage to make something really cool in concept, but it should have been AT LEAST more powerful than the base ps4. They definitely had the money and resources to make a hybrid console that powerful.

    Yeah the Switch can handle everything, yeah games such as RE7 Guardians of the Galaxy, Control: Ultimate Edition and Hitman 3 are cloud only and those that can run natively on Switch have to be massively downgraded , The Witcher 3 is a prime example. The Dreamcast was starved of 3rd party support by Sony THAT and not power forced Sega out of the console market.

    You can't fight lies with more lies.
    Nintendo's own games, which are the only ones that sell well to begin with, run fine on the switch, including TOTK and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. There are no inhouse or first party Nintendo game that are anywhere near "unplayable". XC3 does have its hiccups, but's it's far from an unplayable mess and is actually impressive how well it's able run on such dated hardware.
    If you personally cannot play a game running less than 60FPS, just say that. Don't say a game is "unplayable" because it's runs at a frame rate and resolution you personally don't like.
