    I played the demo and for someone that loves Chinese history and folklore this was my cup of tea. We don't see much major games set in China so i'm glad to see this coming from Team Ninja. I was very interested in seeing how TN would implement Chinese martial arts into the combat and they did amazing. I thought was really well done. It reminds me of growing up watching Chinese martial arts movies like Jet Li, Jackie Chan or Wuxia shows. Oh yeah regarding you saying that it was like a dance yes Kung Fu is known to be like a dance. So that's another kudo points for Team Ninja!

    Looks like they addressed some of the issues you had, in the new gameplay there's audio feedback on deflects and the window for it is slightly bigger. The heal animation is also quicker now.

    I played this demo using a water build and an armorless fire build on separate playthroughs. Gotta say, after my insatiable addictions to Nioh 1 and (my favorite ARPG now) Nioh 2, I'm nothing short of incredibly hyped for Wo Long. I can definitely attest that the deflect window being far too small is a general consensus with players and I've seen people take issue with the healing button being unresponsive at times. Thankfully, as we've seen with Nioh 1 & 2's demos and alphas, Team Ninja really likes to take feedback to heart and every final product has been better than their initial demos so far. I have no doubts this will help make 2023 a great year for gaming!

    I played the demo last night with a friend and had a ton of fun but it definitely needs some improvement. There needs to be more audible and visual feedback for successfully deflecting an attack. Half the time I thought I took damage when I actually successfully dodged.
    The morale system has huge potential but I thought it was way too easy to dodge your way into max redbar, but this def could be a skill issue! Loved the boss at the end

    • @Justin-Thyme
      @Justin-Thyme 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      From what I understand the dodge has barely any i-frames. Also it requires a double tap, so it doesn't come out immediately. The dodge in this game seems to be mostly a tool to quickly reposition yourself, rather than a dodge-through-incoming-attacks like in Souls games.

      @@Justin-Thyme i think the didge is a risk reward thing. If its a difficult mover with hard deflrct timing ? Should I deflect and risk my health or should i dodge and avoid damge but take a chunk of my qi bar and put myself in a bad position if i get hit later. I think its a very good system that has a lot of advantages for skilled players. I was having trouble with the demo boss before i decided to play aggressive and deflect because that allowed me to increase my meter and decrease his and i was surprised how quick the fight went. Overall i think this system will benefit a lot in the long run if the deflect feedback was more fine tuned and the deflect timing was increased by just a bit.

    • @Jack_80

  • @aizazizzat6060
    @aizazizzat6060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I finished the demo just half an hour ago. Its very solid for what it was. My only real issues were that heal animation is a but too long and the deflect timing a bit too tight.( just think it needs to be increases by a smidge, for normal enemies at least if not for bosses, actually i take that back increase boss deflect timing by just a smidge too.)

    • @mkv2718
      @mkv2718 ปีที่แล้ว

      the gear you wear / your weapon can affect the deflect timing. while it takes a cue from sekiro with the system, it’s not a one to one. if you look at your weapon stats you’ll notice they all have different percentages for deflecting, the higher it is, the easier it is to deflect with a certain weapon, (usually if it’s big and slow to attack, it’s easier to deflect with)
      try using a different weapon and see how that goes. while it doesn’t really play like Nioh, team ninja definitely used a lot of the stat mechanics from those games… they made a weird sekiro/nioh hybrid that if you try to play like nioh, you’ll have a bad time, but if you think it’s like sekiro where your deflect is gonna be the same regardless your gear… well. you’ll also have a bad time.
      another example, your gear weight is also gonna effect the spirit bar, specifically how much specials and spells will cost, unlike say with sekiro where your special attacks always had the same spirit emblem cost. it’s interesting what they’ve cherry picked from each game and how they’ve mashed it in.

    I love chinese fantasy alot, my only problem with this game is the deflect button being the same as the dodge button when it should just be connected to the guard button, I also think the sense of difficulty is kinda wack it randomly gets really hard but is super easy other times for that boss his first phase you can literally hitstun lock him and then the second is a actual fight. I think the Ui needs a bit of work cause there was so much shit on my screen I was like what is going on. Hey dude, thank you for making this video. I found it really helpful, fun to watch, and for some reason I want to say "balanced"? (Probably because I spend a lot of time thinking about "balance" in games! Haha). Anyway, good stuff.
    Oh! And two other quick things. There are people in the comments here moaning about a) use of the word "brutally" in the video title. And b) asking each other "why does anyone even care about TH-camrs' opinions?". So, in answer to a) it's just simple CTR logic. People are more likely to click on that. If they have a problem with it, I would suggest they stop clicking on those thumbnails. And as for b) like dude, *they're* the ones who are literally watching (and thus caring) about a TH-camr's opinion! And I don't use the word 'ironic' lightly (as I have a pet peeve when people miss-use it just meaning bad luck), but the irony in this complaint makes me feel calm and happy against their outrage.

    I think it is really important to point out that having a sizable gameplay during the showcase and announce a demo right after is a rare trait in the industry nowsdays. The demo is not only so much fun but it also took me about 2~3 hours to explore and I definitely want to see more. The combat system is innovated upon the nioh formula and i have to say it fits the Chinese folklore very well! Where nioh emphasizes the concept of ''zanshin'' which is a core practice in kendo and in wo long using the concept of deflect, ''qishi'' and morale found in wushu and warfare in ancient China, and also having the elements as level up traits is pretty cool, though the downside is the leveling up is a bit simplified. Overall the game is set in a really chaotic and most interesting historic period in China, the combat is already fun and there is so much potential in terms of story, really look forward to the release.

    So excited for this game.
    First, I’m a Three Kingdoms era fan. Originally from Dynasty Warriors (from when I was a kid!), but later sat down and read Luo Guanzhong’s The Romance.
    And second, I really, really wanted to love Sekiro. But the allure of Soulsborne games for me comes largely from the RPG elements, and Sekiro lacked in those. I still liked it, but like you said, it just didn’t hit the sweet spot.
    I feel like Wo Long will combine everything I love about lore and gameplay. I hope! Way too excited for this one.

    First of all this is one of your better videos. Secondly Nioh2 in my humble opinion far out paces any of the Dark Souls games, even elden ring for the most part...
    in what it does, & how it executes on it, not to mention all the cool ass different feeling weapons you get.
    Anyways, I beat the Wo Long demo, & I didn't really get the "deflection" mechanic down pat.. believe it or not, I was able to use stealth, to some degree to take down most enemies... But what I felt like, that you mentioned, was once I got the deflection down better, that it was really going to add some depth to the combat experience...

      Nioh and Nioh 2 are so different from the FromSoft games though.. I don’t thinks it fair to say that one is clearly better than the other.
      FromSoft puts SO MUCH MORE focus on level design and exploration that it makes it an entirely different game. Nioh, on the other hand, is all about the fast paced combat.
      I love both but I’ll always be a FromSoftware fanboy. I’ve played all of their games.

On another note that rare L sekiro take matty you need to push forward some more man, saying you stopped on Genichiro Is like someone playing dark souls and quitting after beating Taurus demon; like my guy there is an entire game full to the brim with some of the best stuff fromsoftware ever made back there! Still had a blast with the game but I find the combat a bit too slow and floaty with the jump feeling too weighty but not snappy enough. It may be a Japanese made game, but lets be honest, they make just as many generic games as people outside of Japan do. Over the years many game developers borrow elements of gameplay from one another so that its not always clear. I think we can only definitely say that a game is made in definite "Japanese style" if it is some sort of manga RPG with a lot of dialogue that is largely referencing life in Japan and Japanese speaking world, and games that are known as soul-likes since that is just a relatively new genre.

It puts me off to trying more of them for some reason. By the time I get tired of From games they come out with a new one and do a phenomenal job at taking feedback and improving their craft.
