Would you consider adding another section specifically for the 100% completion aspect of the game you're reviewing? Specific challenges, potential rewards, unique achievements, etc.

    Hi Mortismal!
Became a fan before the New Years due to you unparalleled (so far) coverage of cRPGs which you successfully encouraged someone like me who is not used to the genre to try the latest and greatest (WOTR). I love that you are covering the newer games outside cRPGs and I am currently awaiting for your takes on the future releases to come. Just like Wo Long!
Though I have to agree on one thing to improve your niche of review structure: Would really like you to touch on the completionist aspect of the games you cover because even though I enjoy your thorough touch ups on the game mechanics, etc. I feel it's much better if you cover more of the special achievements or the sections of the game that usually don't get experience by someone who's playing the game in full (someone commented it here already but I really want to echo that one). Your experience of 100%'ing the game and the level of difficulty it may bring for someone like yourself who 100% their games all the time.
Love your content! Here for your success as I' m sure it's nothing but up from here. Glad to be a part of your Steam group too! Cheers!

Yeah, ever considered publishing a "review run"? Basically a gameplay fully registered I'm which you get to 100% a game. And the review at the end. This would probably increase the time you need to pushout a review but would function as a "competent gameplay" which many people would be interested watching.
I follow an Italian TH-camr that did this a lot of times. Best one was for Cyberpunk 2077. He published the whole blind run he did to evaluate the game, and then he did a review.

Most of the trophies are pretty straightforward. Complete missions, find pandas, do specific things in 3 or 4 missions. Those specific things are easy to come by if you explore maps fully. There is also an item called cup of cordiality to increase follower lvl. At lvl 10 you unlock their gear and weapon 4 stars. You can farm cups on several levels to upgrade all followers if you don't want the AI following you in missions.

Hey, so we had this discussion about your 100% approach in a Discord channel, and I think they are right in that you should add an extra section about the 100%. Many games can drastically change in the fun department if you aim to 100% them. You sometimes mention it but not always (How grindy, repetitive, are there new mechanics only for sidequest content?, is the 100% just the usual collect 3 chicken wings in 3 parts of the world quests? Can the best weapon only obtained through obscure side missions? etc.)
    Otherwise, great work as always!

Yeah 100% the original Nioh made the game much better as i was forced to use all the weapons. This offset some of the tedium of fighting the same enemies( the games biggest flaw).

For those who are curious and know about Nioh, Wo Long is to Nioh what Sekiro is to Dark Souls... That's roughly the same tradeoff : Tighter and more fast paced combat at the cost of build variety. Nioh already did suffer from a weird itemisation where you had truckloads of weapons and armor pieces, most of it worthless since you could craft on top of and transmog existing items.

I tried this game yesterday and definitely hit the brick wall of the first boss. I finished all three Souls games, Elden Ring and Bloodborne but getting past that first boss will take some time. It's very comforting to hear that it's a real difficulty spike and not representative of the other bosses.

    • @shootoman
      @shootoman ปีที่แล้ว +6

My personal experience is that there are definitely harder bosses than the first one, but at that point you have much more tools and more importantly, you have learned the combat system.
What they do now is, they throw you in to the deep water at the very beginning and see if you learn to swim. It´s hard boss at that point, when you are just trying to figure out, how the game works, but it will force you to learn the basic mechanics of the combat system and that will reward you later on.
You might´ve already get past this boss, but if not, my tip for you is the similar that Sekiro did: unlearn everything you learned from Dark Souls /Bloodborne and implement a new kind of mind set.
It´s actually very similar type of deflection based fighting as Sekiro has.
With Sekiro I had huge problems for quite a long time, because I tried to play it like I played Dark Souls etc. games.

Only got to play the demo a little before sending my laptop on for repair. My experience with souls like is as follows demon souls dark souls 1-3, nioh 1 and 2, the surge 1 and 2, code vein and elden ring. Nioh 2 being most recent (few months ago)
Here are some things that I noticed with my very limited play of the demo and from your review
The keyboard bindings were a nightmare and had to rebind several keys.
The camera and or motion didn't seem as fluid as nioh 2 when running. Gave me dark souls 2 vibes
The deflecting critical blows had more variation in nioh 2 with the burst counter system. Similar situation enemy preps for an attack glows red and if you deflect the attack, the enemy will lose significant stamina, do damage and or get knocked down from my recollection. Nioh 2 had variations of the counter based on the 3 spirit types. Brute type had a claw swipe that if it connected with the attack it would active the deflection while other types would give a second of invulnerability and activate for example.
I worry when it comes to companions/ spirit summons in soulslike games. Elden ring for example was horribly balanced when it came to summons in which bosses were trivialized. Players are encouraged to use them as part of the toolkit via upgrading and there were no negatives to this. For example dark souls 2 placed a decrease of souls gain for beating the boss per summon. Code vein had partners would fight with you and heal you but would run out of heals for themselves. My 2 main concerns are 1. Can I play without companions and if I do is the game balanced for it? 2. Do companions aggro the boss too much or buff me too much making boss fights very easy
I fully agree with the item drops as I had a similar complaint with the nioh series. I can reroll the bonuses and then soul level the equipment. There was also no reason to use the non set items as the set bonuses were so powerful with life drains and power bonuses.
    Great video as usual

If you're willing to put in the effort to get past the first few bosses it actually clicks and is fun even on PC with frame hikes (yes using a controller and added a frame cap to 60 instead of 120). Many concepts were not explained well imo like how to let your followers attack. Once you get it it's more fun.
And yes want to echo the first boss sentiment. The 2nd level boss was literally a cakewalk where I was surprised it was dead so fast. And that's from me having struggled on the first boss for hours with close to 100 attempts. If you want to make it a bit easier, grind the level and get your morale to 25. Second once you get past the first level you're able to buy items to keep your morale level even after death which makes keeping your overleveled power easier when you do lose against the boss the first time.

I like this review, I feel like it's very honest to the reviewer and their experience.
Me personally when I played, the game crashes but that's about the only issue I had. It never crashed in the cutscenes and would crash during specific boss attacks or so or enemy attacks after I'd already been playing like an hour and a half. So every like hour and a half or two it would crash after like a specific attack and then I would load the game up and redo the same patterns and attacks and all of that. And I would never crash again until another hour or two in lol. Definitely definitely one of their worst optimized games. Still a great game though. Despite the PC controls lacking, I play with remote control as I always do with games like this

I get the impression that very late in development, someone with a lot of power completely changed their mind on the build system. They abruptly felt *very* strongly that their existing build system (one where you wouldn't have access to anything like that crafting system and definitely not early, and build *is* super important but just something you could only engage with through insane amounts of grinding for loot) needed to change, possibly because it's the least reviewer-friendly thing imaginable. No journalist has ever *had* a Nioh build, and they're like 90% of the game's fun. The problem is, they had this change of mind after the *entire* game was built around refining that existing system. They decided to offer an easy mode - one where you didn't need to grind and could just have the gear you normally would in NG+5 from the start, without refining enemy health and numbers to compensate. The problem is that rather than offering a toggle, it defaults to on and there is no off.

  • @sirborkton8451

I think if they fixed up a lot of stuff the game would be quite good for an introduction to souls games for many. Agree on the concept of blocking when necessary which is a habit I need to break. Some of the attacks just happen too fast to deflect. The lock on system for controller is very wonky. Switching targets is just doesn’t work sometimes. Multiplayer coop is little buggy but fun. All the buffing spells are the best and everything else just seems useless in comparison imo. Weapons are fun but the special moves they get I feel like I hardly use cause I’m spending spirit on spells or my own attacks to break armor.

  • @kandihustty5610
    @kandihustty5610 ปีที่แล้ว

Honestly my biggest complaint so far is the Reinforcements not being optional, otherwise 8.5/10. The only problem with the loot for me is that I'd like to see more variety earlier in the game and be able to increase my items rarities. I had tier 4 armor since the second mission but couldn't get a tier 4 weapon till 8 hours into the game and it was a weapon I'd never use.

  • @Umbraso

Thank you! You mentioned that sometimes you have to block instead of parry since the enemy just strikes too quickly. That was my issue with the first boss in his second phase, I just couldn't time the parry quick enough. But then I tried blocking during his quick attacks (parry the slower ones) and then I got him after 3 tries. Must've been over a 100 tries in total to get that *(^&*&%^

    • @cleebe6905

it's on the gamepass so I've been playing this since friday. It's basically a sekiro-like parry/deflect system without fromsoft level design and really boring itemization like you said (and you get FLOODED in items at a point it actually even becomes super annoying). Also more than once I found that the companions made the boss fights harder for me since I had not time to read the patterns and they took the aggro when I was trying to deflect attacks so most of the time I just used them in levels and banished them for bosses. Also yeah it's funny how the first tutorial boss is the hardest to beat lol. Still quite fun to play but I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this.
