I just did this service on my '96 ZJ 4.0. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video and your thoughtful and complete knowledge to get this work done. It made my service a breeze. My accumulator spring was broken and stuck, whoever did the service last did not put in a pan gasket, the filter was filthy and the fluid was maroon in color. I now have first gear back and the Jeep is a whole new vehicle. Thanks again so so much. BTW a few weeks ago, I also did the fuel filter according to your video - again, a success. Thanks for the knowledge and I look forward to more!

My transmission pan leaks on my 42RE Transmission on my 2001 JGC Laredo 4.0L IN6 w/225k miles but still runs good. So I decided that if I going to replace the tranny gasket, I might as well replace the filter and solenoids also along with the spring. So lucky you have a drain plug.. So, one day I'm going to work and the transmission starts slipping.. I mean bad.. I get to work and turn it off.. Start it up and it's okay for a few min.. Then starts to slip. I check the transmission oil level and it's okay.. So I nurse it home.. Then I decide to throw a hail marry and I change the transmission oil filter.. and it worked.. It's been months of it working fine.. 200k 96 jeep grand 5.2

Holy shit you are the man!!!
My 1997 grand Cherokee was slipping, completely out of the blue. The day before I drove 160 miles round trip with no issues. Took it to a transmission shop they told me it needed a complete rebuild for $2,800.00.
I watched your video and changed all the parts (by the way there are 2 different solenoids for that year, so I would recommend taking the old one out before ordering a replacement). The accumulator spring was in 3 pieces!
Long story short it’s running fine now!!!

Hey. Great videos. I did the fluid back in April I believe following this video. I refused the original pan gasket, which wasn’t leaking before as the one that came with the filter was rumored to leak. Now I have leaks all around the drain pan. 13 ft lbs is what I tightened them to. Any idea why this would leak now when it didn’t before?

I did this not too long ago because after I blew a trans line I kept getting a CEL for low voltage offset. Unfortunately at the time I went nopar and bought a $40 kit from Ebay of a now unknown brand complete with housing gasket. Still having the same problems so I basically have to keep my boss's Matco scanner with me to delete the code so I get first gear. Going to do it again but with mopar this time but hope it isn't a wiring issue. Also too bad you don't have a 4.0 1998 ZJ because if you did I bet you would have a killer NSS video which I could really use right now lol.

I’m curious, I just received a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo str 6 and was wondering if the transmission also has that regulator spring? It shifts like absolute crap around 3rd & 4th gear (I wouldn’t even consider it shifting, whenever you give it a little bit of gas the rpms shoot up to 3-1/2-4 thousand). Any help would be appreciated as I am only 16 and am getting my license in 3 days. Thank you!

Not bad. You're going to strip pan bolts with that impact wrench. Should invest in a torque wrench.

I'm a Mopar fan but seriously why in THE HELL did they require band adjustments with each transmission service? Mine has 254,000 miles and I'm about to change mine for the second time since owning it and it seems to be shifting fine when it's warmed up. Last time they didn't use Mopar fluid and I can tell the difference. Mopar is the only fluid that should be used in a Chrysler built transmission.

I've never done this to my ZJ....I've probably put 60k miles on it since I bought it (Currently has 210k miles). I've read that replacing the fluid at this point may cause more harm than good. What is your opinion?

My '96 had 210k miles when I did this and now has 250k miles and drives fine... My wifes '97 Jeep ZJ had 250k miles when we got it and the first thing I did was the same transmission service. Her Jeep now has 285k miles on... I say all that to say CHANGE THAT DAMN TRANSMISSION FLUID!!!!!!!!!!!!... my transmission slipped from 1st to 2nd when I first got it until I did this

Man this video is so helpful. Got everything taken apart for a sensor to be completely different. My pressure sensor is straight at the connector not bent this sucks lol. But great video!

B.G. I have a question, Where did you get those TORX SCREWDRIVERS ? I HATE THE BIT ONES. The Dorman Trans. Pan says it will fit my Trans. but the GASKET SAYS DOES NOT FIT , WTF ? I have a 97 Grand with the 6 & a 42 RE Trans.

The 4.0 used a 42re, basically the same tranny but not as strong. The steps are gonna be virtually the same.

Does your transmission also have a “spin-on” filter? I’ve seen that in some replacement kits for Dodge Durango 5.2L transmissions.
