Just bought my son a 97 ZJ as a project for us to work on over the next year before he gets his license. Found your channel and haven't stopped watching since. Thanks for these...they are informative and entertaining.
Thank you Tim! I cant wait to teach my boy how to wrench. 2 more months to go and I get meet him. 😁 then the time comes Ill let him choose any vehicle he wants... as long as it has a straight six !
I had a 95 zj limited that my uncle gave me. He rebuilt the engine I rebuilt the transfer case the transmission, put a lot of blood and sweat into it and I was gonna keep it forever but then I wrecked it, I cried. But now my wife got us this exact same zj same color everything.
This was the first project I tackled on my XJ. Drained the transmission fluid, dropped the pan, new filter and gasket. It was really messy and I dropped my favorite hat into the drain pan with the old fluid during the process, but..... my exhaust didn’t fall off on the way to the part store 😂 Great video, as always!!
I was waiting for somebody to signal signal you over and tell you your 🐉 something!!! I just wanted to say you’re a very patient man.... Cause I would’ve lost my damn mind. Thanks 🙏
As a fellow ZJ owner I carry bailing wire at all times. I also keep tool and spare parts in the back, including both transmission lines. It has a brand new motor and I still don't trust it on a daily basis. They are free for a reason. I need to get two more to keep mine going to work.
The Lucas transmission additive is a must. The old transmission likes fluid with the consistency of Jello. I use a whole bottle in mine and it could probably run good with more. How does the position of the transmission cooler not interfere with the radiator? I live in a very hot climate where I would love to get a transmission cooler but I don't know where I would put it where it would work best.
I found that if I started the car, applied the brake and put it into all of the gears a few times, the transmission would tighten up and not slip. A racing transmission guy told me that the seals in that transmission dry out and and lose flexibility. He said what I was doing was swelling the seals and preventing slippage. His price to repair this was $5000. So I still play the start up procedure game. Good times in the ZJ.
Needed this today 😂 I’ve been putting my ZJ back together too. Glad I’m not the only one having “fun”. loved the turtles reference. I cry laughed when the exhaust fell out. Keep on going bro and I will too! Cheers 🤙
23:54 That oversized looking fitting on the end of that metal tube is a "check valve". It will eventually get plugged up with debris from friction clutches as the transmission ages. It won't let trans fluid circulate through your cooler, and you might say to yourself, "I have a trans cooler, why is my fluid burned black and why does it keep popping out of overdrive?" Well the answer is, the trans is popping itself out of overdrive because the oil temp sensor in the trans is working to protect itself. So, what you gotta do is cut that check valve out of that line, flare the tube a little like my man here did and you will be good to go. (after you change the black burned fluid for nice new red fluid) I found this out on one of the jeep forums). I was pulling a horse trailer. My trans kept popping out of overdrive, I had to put it in neutral, shut off the engine, this re-sets the trans. Re-start the engine and go a little farther. Not fun on the highway!
If I'm not mistaken I believe those trans bolt and nuts are only supposed to be torqued down to between 8 and 12 foot pounds which really isn't a lot, you do with a hand Driver quite easily
MIne slipped like that when it was cold mostly. Replaced both solenoids, fluid (was good) and the filter. Still did it, then suddeny a few days later ran perfect, and still does after several months. Go figure. Must be one of those Jeep Things.....except it's really a Chrysler Thing. The A-500 Torque Flite ain't no AW4. Very sensitive animals, they are. Now replacing the steering box, all susp bushings, and a total brake job. If it wasn't a clean old rig, i'd get rid of it, but I must admit, I can see why so many were sold, and it gets me to the top of the ridges just fine.
The "cork" gasket actually isn't bad. You do have to be methodically (near) perfect with torque specs when installing. Also it is highly recommended to use a very thin amount of high temp chemical resistant rtv. Very thin amount. Also, used blue loctite (not red) to hold torque long term. If not, you will have to tighten 2 more times again over "so many miles" to complete proper totqueing.
OMG Dan! “Dan, Dan, the Backwards Man”! I died laughing 😂 And you handled all the problems with a great attitude. And occasional chuckles 😄 This video taught me again, and that is awesome. 11:36 last bolt bent the pan because you didnt hold it up good enough maybe? be carefull dude. good way to start more leaks bending it like that by the weight of that fluid.
nope, definitely didn't bend the pan. but that is another great reason to switch to a pan with a drain plug. It will ensure theres no extra fluid weight Incase you dangle it on a bolt
I bet the guy that had it before you had a Little helper probably his son and he told him to finger tight those bolts and he come back and show him how to tighten them properly. Then of course forgot!!! And I’m not telling you this story or coming up with this theory because it happened to me. But it actually did !! Amen brother😁I get to go out and try to finish some stuff up god forbid me getting to do it the last couple day's when it was beautiful outside why does it always workout thatway???lol
Hey Dan.... i tried instead of 100% Lucas stop slip...i put in 50% stop slip and 50% oil stabliser(synthetic; total amt still 24 OZ) it drives great (on a toyota van)
I did The same thing if that was the reason why it was leaking if I would’ve tightened up the screws after the fact would’ve it held being it was loose that long? Thanks 🙏
Dude, same exhaust break i had years ago. I was doing 65 on the highway. Stopped tried to rip it off. Nah. So I committed finishing my drive to work. If you didn't have these jeep experiences we would just be called Toyota owners.
lmao, what the hell. something similar happened to me in my 96 Grand Cherokee. except I was having computer shoring issues. It backfired then my muffler exploded while I was driving down the street. sounded like the loudest gunshot you ever heard. after that, it sounded like a death helicopter without a muffler. This shit is embarrassing! Anywho I replaced the ECM and muffler and never had a problem again since.
It's gonna leak again. Chrysler transmissions from that generation were designed to seal with silicone only. Never use a gasket there. Also, the 42RE, like the 42FE has oiling issues where the oiling holes were too small. Hence the notorious failures in all of those transmissions. The only fix I know of is to tear it apart and drill the holes to 5/16' when you're rebuilding it.
My 98 ZJ 4L I6 didn't have the factory cooler either...I think after 96 they dropped the auxiliary cooler with the tow package, stupid idea. I added a cooler right after I got the Jeep. You don't want to get an automatic transmission really hot, that's what kills them LOL
@@leakyjeep5.9 Took the cheap route, and those coolers in the radiator don't do anything, you are trying to cool 200 degree transmission fluid with 200 degree coolant LOL. I added an aux cooler to my 98 ZJ right after I got it.
Thanks for watching! all vehicles should have one. lol . Heat is an enemy to the life of your trans so why not pop one in? right? The benefits outweigh the risks by far. Theyre a simple install too, so why not, cant hurt. The toughest part is finding a place to mount em.
The tranny cooler is like almost every other cooler, it’s built into the radiator. If your doing just daily driving it should be good enough, if your gonna do some serious off reading or towing an external cooler is definitely advised.
Do you think can I drive my zj 4.0 without a thermostat? Because we cross the border and do line about 2 hrs. And we have a 120° F outside, so my zj with the AC on the temperature gets like a 140 145
its better to have no thermostat at all then a blocked or stuck thermostat. Engines run best at a specific temp, you want it to heat up and then the thermostat opens too cool and keep it at its operating temp... with out a thermostat you may not reach optimal running temp, but you shouldn't over heat. So in short.. yes lol.. you should be ok without a thermostat
The only stock trans cooler is integrated into the radiator. (On my ZJ, V8s with a tow package might have an OEM trans cooler) The one I installed is an independent cooler mounted in front of the AC condenser. Thanks for watching!
@@ProjectDanH OH. Well my stock one is in front of everything on the right side. @@jonathanskogebo728 awesome idea tackling the disc brake conversion. 👊 I'd like to recommend doing the trans cooler now since summer is upon us and heat is bad for the trans.
@@ProjectDanH I think so? I kinda like it, but always wondered if it was the torque converter going bad. I'm about to rebuild this sucker so I guess I will find out
Well it was leaking trans fluid and didn't know if it was warped or damaged. Plus I wanted one with a drain plug... So I crossed everything trans related off the list at once.
The 42RE is dog shit in an aluminum box. change my mind. haha. All kidding aside, they can be kept alive with a little TLC, some lucas, and a trans cooler. you have another 150k on that bad boy for sure!
I bought a black 99 wj from a guy in a neighborhood just like this on the island for 600 bucks back in 2016, had a hole on both sides of the block, I swapped it and the thing is still going 242k lol, drive it up and down the mountains in PA a couple times a month. Have u ever herd or used the mopar reuse able gaskets?
No, I usually replace everything
amen !
🙏
I see you got the Bronx tale’s driving backwards down pack
🤣🤣🤣 that's how I roll
Getting a ZJ is cool, but getting a FREE one with 150k on the clock? That's killer!
Yes!!! Sure is buddy!
Hey babe when are you going to be done with the Jeep? As soon as parts stop falling off LOL. Thought Fords only had problems with parts falling off.
LMAO! Seriously!!! The Carnage never ends!
William Todd I’ve only had parts come off once and that was my fault
Ya never know what you gonna get with a free Z! HAHA
Need to do this to my xj... eventually... lol
Go for it! it was easier in my XJ.. more room in the grille area
@@ProjectDanH I'm currently chasing an a/c issue lol and I just finished a disc brake swap. I'll do the cooler in the spring of next maybe.
@@jonathanskogebo728 awesome idea tackling the disc brake conversion. 👊 I'd like to recommend doing the trans cooler now since summer is upon us and heat is bad for the trans.
Jonathan Skogebo is this a common thing to do on xj and tj?
Sure!
So you have that whistle in first gear as well...
yep! is that normal? lol
@@ProjectDanH I think so? I kinda like it, but always wondered if it was the torque converter going bad. I'm about to rebuild this sucker so I guess I will find out
@@Nathanallenpinard haha cool. Let me know!
AMEN
Amen
I have two 28 row oil coolers on my wj
Awesome! V8 tow package?
Project Dan H my transmission coolers are aftermarket,my wj is 4.0 supercharged
@@trevorthomas6043 dude! That's sick. Hit me up on Instagram.. I gotta see it!
Haha , I have my zj in the shop for exhaust work today
rotten original exhaust , need new cat, muffler and small crack in header
hooray for 1997
LMAO! gotta love rotten original parts! hooray for Jeep 😂
Wholly Hel man!!!
Yep!
Why did you need new trans pan???
Well it was leaking trans fluid and didn't know if it was warped or damaged. Plus I wanted one with a drain plug... So I crossed everything trans related off the list at once.
What if you bypass the engine cooler completely?
engine cooler?
The 42RE is dog shit in an aluminum box. change my mind. haha. All kidding aside, they can be kept alive with a little TLC, some lucas, and a trans cooler. you have another 150k on that bad boy for sure!
🤣🤣🤣 Seriously! So far so good!! Wish me luck 🤞
I bought a black 99 wj from a guy in a neighborhood just like this on the island for 600 bucks back in 2016, had a hole on both sides of the block, I swapped it and the thing is still going 242k lol, drive it up and down the mountains in PA a couple times a month. I’m wondering if it’s the same neighborhood or if you know him, it was like every other house had jeeps lol
That's hilarious I wonder if you got your WJ from the same guy I got my WJ 🤣
That’s exhausting lol 😂
😂😂😂 exactly!
Dang. Just one of those days, huh?
Yup, I was actually singing Limp Bizkit Break Stuff in a clip but the vid was too long and had to cut it. lol
Can i use these same parts for a 98 5.2?
absolutely
Hayden 679? Link doesn’t work
maybe it's been discontinued... I'll check it out..
What is the gunk in the rad?
Some ungodly mix of dirt, rust, funk, sediment and overall jeep decay.
Well with the bolts on the transmission pan not being tight its a wonder the pan didn't fall off with the exhaust HAHA!!!
HAHA!!! Parts are falling off faster than Charlie's teeth! haha. Great comments Will!!! Lets hope nothing else falls off!
@@ProjectDanH Only thing I've ever had fall off my ZJ was a stabilizer bar link...went a bit too far with the Jeep offroad a bit too much flex and snapped a link. So far so good with my current 98 ZJ though, my 96 ZJ I had previously lived a very hard life, although I kept up with the maintenance on it, I had it offroad more than it was on the highway, it was covered in mud most of the year. My current Jeep is pretty much a street queen although I do take it off the beaten path occasionally when I'm up in the hills.
Who the heck needs an exhaust that just robs engine power, chop it off it'll be fine LOL.
LMAO... Unfortunately I needed it for the NYS inspection. lol Its all welded up, thats the next vid. Somehow it still sounds crappy so it may get chopped off still!!!
It's a Jeep thing.
haha. totally
Why the new pan?
Incase there was something wrong with the other one... and also I just wanted one with a drain plug 😁
@@ProjectDanH Ah, okay and thanks man. Going to change the fluid myself after watching this vid.
@@peteralexander1155 awesome man! It's messy, enjoy! Becarful not to overtightened the pan bolts
ill be on the beach at the end of william floyd pkway blue 99 wj ,,,,,,, if you see me beep good videos !!!!!!!!!
thanks brother! I'll look you for ya!
I swear ..This morning my seal for mine Broke
Dang Kang! Good luck on the fix 👊
If backing your ZJ down the street because you exhaust fell off isnt true Jeeping, i dont know what is!
HAHA.. feel free to use this clip in your "You might be a real Jeeper 2" vid! 🤣🤣🤣
Hell yea buddy!
Not backing up and going to work dragging it under your XJ in complete DGAF mode, then dealing with it in the dirty snow at work.
LMAO, When my XJ exhaust fell off on my way home from work I pulled into a gas station, jacked it up, Ripped it out, and thew it into the woods 🤣🤣🤣
Just use an "abortion tool" (a wire coat hanger) to hang the exhaust until you get there!
if you have radiator fluid all over you you screwed up hahaha 28 minutes in
Heeeeey man my name is Angel from Mexico and I have a jeep Cherokee 4x2 98 but I need one special part wich here in Mexico I can't get it.... please contact me i know you can help me out 🤘
