    I just had to comment on the efficiency of the videos. Every shot shows something that is pertinent. Every word of narration has relevant information. It doesn't waste any time and it fully educates you. Excellent stuff.

    Dude, I've been watching your videos off and on for 3 years. Anytime I need to refer to a maintenance process your videos are always the best. I've had this ZJ for 20-something years. I love doing as much to it as I can myself without taking it anywhere. Thanks for the help!

    Even though I own my own automotive repair shop, I never thought about pulling the fill plug first, I guess not being around the rust belt I have never had a problem with the fill plug. I will definitely be doing that from now on because it will only take one to ruin my Day!

    Best Jeep ZJ channel anywhere, awesome - BIG Thank Yous from Switzerland! When I did my change a few weeks back, I sprayed some brake cleaner into the transfer case to remove any dregs from the old fluid, then I rinsed the case with some fresh fluid before putting the drain plug back on. I used Castrol Dexron/Mercon IV because it's supposed to be heavy duty as I drive the 5.9 as you do… 👍🏻

    My rear 249 output seal blew out on vacation. Found an Autozone 20 miles away that had the 4370n seal. Driveshaft came right out but old seal was a little work to pound out with a screw driver and a 1/2" ratchet as a hammer lol. I could go 10 miles and the case was dry and had to refill. Fun times.

    as concerns verifying the fill plug is removable b4 draining, absolutely yes to that good comment. if however you fail to do so, or as so often happens, the fill plug is buggered, and you still need to change fluid, go get a barbed hose fitting NPT thread to appropriate size of the case opening. buy the type of plastic hose funnel that screws onto your quart size ATF bottle and force the appropriate amount of fluid through the drain hole into the case. this of course after you have drained the previous content.
    when you have overfilled by about a pint from what the unit calls for, do the switcheroo, removing the fill apparatus in exchange for your normal drain plug.

    Great videos. I have a '94 Grand Cherokee that my in-laws bought new. My teenage daughter drives it to school, so it's on the third generation in our family. I did the tire spin test and the wheel spins opposite direction, so I thought that means it's not a limited slip differential. But then I called the dealer and gave them the VIN # and they said it's anti-spin (which I assume is just another name for limited slip). I plan on changing the gear oil so I'll look at the insides to see if I can tell if it's limited slip or not. Could the tire spin test not apply for different years?

    I did this awhile ago and added the MOPAR transfer case fluid for the 249 T case. For some reason I was checking what bulbs I should get for spares and looked at the fluids too. My owners manual only lists ATF fluid for my T case. But it’s a 1998 with a 5.2L and has Quadra-Trac, so I trust the page you showed. Any idea why my manual would show me this? Also, it had ATF in it before and I just assumed it was services wrong.

      Im not sure but according to the Haynes and Chrysler Factory Service Manual it suggest usin the mopar fluid so thats what I went with.

    I've been itching to swap my 249 tcase but I decided to "f*** it" and used Val max life instead of ATF+4. So therefore, if it dies...it dies...swap time. But so far so good 75k and 2 flushes later absolutely nothing wrong with it fluid came out nice. So I don't care what anyone else said.

      Quadratracs have special clutches that Require the proper fluid(with additives)-it used to be sold as a small bottle added with fluid but now comes in fluid. Go to a dealer parts counter/online and get the right fluid. My first quardratrac was in 79 SJ

    My 249j transfer case is making a creepy sound right now like a bad ball bearing but there's none on my truck because I just replaced them all and it only happened when I replaced the fluid with atf3 because that's all they had and I couldn't find the Mopar stuff you got anywhere what do you suggest if I can't find your Mopar fluid because I have the 96 just like you 4 wheel high all time and four wheel only quadratrac

    I couldn't get Mopar fluid in my local stores and I ended up finding out that Mopar fluid is repackaging Mobil fluid with a mark up. I was able to get an equivalent in a shell brand. It's a HD tractor transmission fluid suitable for submersed brakes. Shell spirax s4 txm. I have an 04 quadra drive.

    Thank You for the great content. QUESTION. Can I flat tow behind my motorhome ( 4 wheels on ground) a 96 ZJ with the 249 transfer case? I tested by putting transfer case in neutral and transmission in park and zj moves freely forward and reverse as I push it. Ssme thing happens if transfer case is in neutral and transmission in neutral, I wonder what's safer. Please someone with experience on this reply. I have a trip coming soon and need to know.
    For my towing points I'm good. Jeep has a heavy duty winch mount with d rings and it's sandwiched over the unibody frame.. (1996 5.2 V8 with full time 4wd 249 transfer case, automatic transmission)

    • @bolshoibooze8010
      @bolshoibooze8010 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, ATF+4 is the standard go to. since the trans used AFT+4 too so if the seal happens to leak from the trans mixing back and forth with the tcase the fluid would've still be the same instead of mixing diff types of fluid.

    • @elliptor
      @elliptor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My viscous coupler on my 95 5.2L went out at around 140 thousand miles. The dealer replaced it. And now I am at 230k and it's still going strong. I would not change out the 249 if you're going to do everyday driving. The 249 is a freaking beast in the snow. That I do know!
