I was expecting this to be another “erm smash players shouldn’t be around kids and are annoying and smell bad!” video but it ended up being just a nice wholesome video that reminded me why, despite everything, I still stick around the community. Great stuff
Thank you! I thought this video was gonna be about a bad experience or to criticize the smash community, but I was happy it was just wholesome. Online, things often look worse than how they actually are. I have had a pleasant experience with all my locals and bigger tournaments so far and I'm sad when people talk down on the smash community. Thank you for encouraging others to go to their locals
@@VistyMe I think it’s immature to generalize a community based off of a handful of talented people so it’s easy to ignore the criticism that comes with it. It’s annoying but ultimately we can’t control other people so be secure in the fact that you’re a decent person who just plays a game with other cool people lol.
I grew up playing 64 and Melee and I was really bad, even for a kid. I missed out on the first half of Brawl's lifespan as I was the only person on the planet without a Wii, but when I went to college near DFW my friends played a ton of it after classes and two of them decided to start looking into the competitive scene and learning tech like DACUS. I was more of a cursory viewer from the side at this point. Eventually one of them found out about this new mod for Brawl, Project M. He figured out how to hack his Wii and they started playing that instead. Then they started driving all the way to Plano (~2h) every week to play at tournanents. Still I sat on the sidelines. It looked cool, but I was bad at video games and not a very competitive person, so I figured I'd be out of place in a competitive game. That summer they went to the first Low Tier City and it sounded like they had so much fun that I finally decided to take the plunge. My first tournament was a monthly in San Antonio where the winner was some snobby Melee elitist just there for free money (he looked down on PM as a lesser game). But despite that I had a blast and started joining my friend whenever I could. Pretty soon we made a deal with a local card shop to hold weekly smash fests where we'd set up a CRT or two and just play out in public, inviting anyone interested to come play with us. Before long we had a little scene of a dozen or so people going and it lasted in one form or another until COVID. Once lockdowns ended we kinda had to restart from scratch, but we've got a nice little scene going again, and we even play more than just Smash Bros now! So as an addendum to your call to action: If you don't have locals, make them. You'd be surprised how much interest you can get if you find a venue.
I will never forget first time playing in a tournament. I was a military brat and I was living in Korea at the time. Randomly I saw a smash tournament was gonna be at the mustang center, so I signed. Finally I get there and my first opponent was a the 8th best. Got demolished but that’s what gave me the inspiration to get really good at this game. Then I actually started doing good at ngl, those were some of the highs of my life so far.
Great video! I’ve personally been into Smash since 2018 around when ultimate came out though I did play 4 and Brawl a few years before. There was a time period where I disliked smash for various petty reasons (like it being popular though I just hated how bad I was at it). Eventually I decided to give it another shot and started looking guides on how to play it better and realized how completely wrong I was and started to love it. I joined my school community and soon joined my local smash community in Virginia. Even though I made a lot of friends through this game I won’t lie I had a lot of ego problems with it that I’m still working on to this day but I definitely learn about a lot about socializing. Also learning how to love learning and grinding for something you love. Also Rival of Aether is an amazing game glad to see it mentioned here. Have hundreds of hours on it. Love the movement, combos and movesets each character has (even if it a lot of it is kinda cheesy imo 😂).
Man it honestly seems like a lotta smash players have the same experience no matter what region your in. Start your competative journey in S4 but switch games when the game was dying the last year, REALLY try and get better/go full tilt at the start of ult by entering a mega load of tournaments then either stop player after pandemic/FP2 or keep playing but less LOL. Love the smash community, from an outsiders perspective online it looks like ass but IRL its one of the most welcoming scenes to be apart of. Def made most of my friends through smash and wouldnt trade those experiences for anything
Nice vid! Personally, I discovered competitive smash in 2022. Since then I've gone to quite a few tournaments and done really well, but I've never been to a weekly or entered an online tourney for a multitude of reasons. I've recently wanted to get into the scene more and go to weeklies, I just always have other important things to do and/or forget about it.
interesting vid mate. i was in ninth grade the fall smash 4 came out. I remember playing it and going to a couple local tournaments in 2016. but somehow someway I got lured back into melee and never really looked back. i'm curious to hear how melee relates to this story, if you don't myself asking? also. you should totally get back into mario kart wii, because that shit is real.
I only played melee before brawl came out. I just recently started playing it a bit but thats pretty much it. Nothing really to add about melee. mkwii is sick though, best mario kart for sure
Man, seeing the Pre-covid DFW weekly tournament schedule was a hit of nostalgia I didn't expect to get today

Its facts tho

💯
Local scenes are usually fine, the well-known people that turn out to be creeps are losers are the worst since they make everyone else look bad.

banger video, also banger format as well. You do a fantastic job of highlighting why smash is so fun - the local Community. 10/10 no notes good stuff.
I would hoenstly love to go to locals, but for me most of them take hours to drive to.
So crazy to see another video showing some love to the local scene just after I made one (: keep this going, liked/subbed!!
