  • Mark heads into the public lands of Arkansas with Clay Newcomb to learn the backwoods approach to deer hunting of working saddles and still-hunting. He’ll get one day to study under Clay and then he’ll set out on his own to kill a backcountry buck himself.

That’s entirely based on what specific criteria. How much they do for conservation and hunting education? That’s Steve-o and Cal. Best to listen to while trying to sleep? That’s Clay. Also best stache. Best hunter? That’s Remi Warren (though he isn’t technically part of the crew). Examples go on and on, ad infinitum.

been hunting this way all my life . its the only way i know .. never could understand the modern drive to spend thousands and thousands of dollars chasing antler sizes, sitting in funished towers over baited plots ... always felt like they were missing the whole point of the experence .

There is this interesting dynamic that happens with older hunters and anglers. They feel more emotion and value out of seeing the younger generation carry on their tradition. Even to the point where it trumps their own personal hunting and angling endeavors. I see this in my father every time me or my brother gets a buck of any size. The same when he helps one of his 8 grand children catch a fish. He's more happy in those moments than when I saw him get a 140 inch black-tail, or his 9lb large-mouth. The same thing can be seen and reflected in James's whole reaction in Mark's success, even to the point of helping him skin the buck and quarter it up, all with a huge smile on his face. James had just met Mark as well, it shows that synergistic woodsman kinship fueled the comradery. There is something within the mind, heart, or soul that provokes the older generation to feed off and ultimately relish the success of the next vanguards.
Weather you believe in creation or evolution, that's a beautiful trait we have woven into our DNA and it's quite admirable.

Arkansas may be a poorer state, but we certainly have a much higher quality of life here than places like california and new york. In Arkansas, you are allowed to live and breathe without being crammed together like a can of sardines. You are allowed to actually have a life here rather than spending all your time struggling to pay the costs of living that other places have. It is cheaper to buy a house in Arkansas and pay it off over a few years than it costs to rent a small apartment in los angeles. Arkansas is a generally pleasant place to be and live, where many states and most cities are miserable.

I just struggled through 5 days of unsuccessful elk hunting here in Idaho and I have to keep reminding myself that success rates are realistically in the 15% range and that this was only my 2nd season elk hunting and 4th season hunting overall. Gotta work through the struggles and keep soaking up all the knowledge and information I can. One day it’ll come together and I’ll be packing a big bull out of the mountains and even then I’ll still have a lifetime of struggle and learning ahead of me.

Last season I killed my first deer in the national forest. I hunt public and have killed plenty but never in the wilderness areas within the national forest or the forest itself. I hiked 2 miles in and got up to a ridge with white oaks on it with acorns still on the ground and sat against big oak and next thing you know I had shot a spike with my 30.06 bar. It took me a while and was back breaking getting it out but the satisfaction and lessons I learned far outweighed that.

I watched it on big screen tv. But couldn't comment there. As a trad bow hunter I love this video. Technology is getting so advanced it maybe soon it won't be hunting anymore. You will know exactly what time they will show up and you kill your animal. The spot and stalk sun to your back wind to your face walking like a deer would few steps constantly scanning for deer plaid fleece shirt fleece pants ( makes no noise when brushing against brush. ) Use of baking soda to kill the smell in swirling winds. I don't see this type of hunting really much anymore. Where you rely on yourself as a hunter and leave technology out of it.

Too often us hunters get caught up with the harvesting of a big animal as the only measure of success in a given hunt. We fail to realize that the most special part of hunting is the time at Deer Camp with friends and the time alone in God's beautiful country. It gives us time to reminisce and brings back memories of previous hunts with Grandpas, Dads, and Uncles that are no longer with us.

I loved the video and agreed with all of it , I have 50 years hunting white tails and would like to share information with all of you, remember this the big bucks sleep on the top of a ridge or on the edge of water, so you can’t sneak up on them easily, when you are walking hunting ( still hunting) take two or 3 steps then stop and glass , always watching your wind , i could go on for hours lol the only thing I seen you do wrong was grunt while walking, you while chase away does and if the big boy comes to you it will be down wind and you will never see it , ❤️everyone good luck hunting, if anyone has questions I’ll try to help ✌🏻

Ok kido I just wanna help. First you still don’t understand what a saddle is, pay more attention. Second you should never have your gun on your shoulder while still hunting. Third it’s more like 3 steps slowly and stop for a bit. That’s how far you dare go cus there’s things to look over before you progress or you’re gonna miss something. Move the way the deer move when they aren’t scared

Lived in Midwest but grew up in the south. Completely different worlds. Live in Arkansas where they just don't make them "big" by most standards. Through my life I have hunted with dogs, still hunted, trophy deer stand hunted, hunted public, hunted hi end private, hunted my own land, hunted mountains. All is a different experience and should be relished particularly with those you enjoy it WITH. Used to be a loner but am wiser and frankly not physically able to do that smart anymore. As long as you are an ethical hunter and focus on a clean and quick kill I applaud you. Pass it on.

I have a feeling there are more deer around because there are fewer hunters around these days. 50-60 years ago hunters were crawling out of the wood work. Now the young people think hunting and killing deer is cruel and uncivilized. After all you are killing bambi. I've come from a family that hunted but my generation never really got into it. My father didn't want guns around and wasn't interested in hunting while and my cousins never got into it. My grandfather was an avid hunter but he died before he could teach his grand kids. I really regret that and now I want to learn hunting but there's no one around to teach.

Walking deer you should really try "barefoot"-shoes.

As a Northern Albertan this is an episode I can relate with. I'd love to show those boys around some real deer territory... Like we're talking about the giant bush ninjas that you have to spend a month tracking the does before the rut then spend a month waiting for the biggest bucks on the planet to walk by your blind.

What is that tree stand/climbing setup he's using? That's pretty cool. Wouldn't mind having one of those in my pack.

BEAUTIFUL buck and a great episode. That deer is picture perfect to the point that it made me misty just looking at his beauty. Awesome, dude.

How he says , always looking forward to the new. My opinion only, think we all should search and practice from the past, that's where the spirit, and honor of the hunt was born.

I would have given up on meat eater if it weren’t for Clay and Mark. Janis and Spencer wear on my nerves hard. 👎🏼

Just started hunting last year and just moved to the Natural State. Have not taken an animal so far but hope to in the next couple weeks in the Ozarks 😬

On the ground public land hunting is the real deal. Respect to people who hunt the way I learned growing up. And I still hunt that way
