It's anti hunting landowners like that that have contributed greatly to deer overpopulation in urban landscapes.

I couldn't agree more. We have a massive over population issue in Central PA where I live. Sadly all of the private landowners that have bought land that is surrounded by State Game Lands will never let you look for an animal because "My kids like to feed them." Or the always better one. "They play with our dogs." Then they wonder why diseases run rampant throughout their little private community of overcrowding

I'm honestly just surprised that dc lets you have a bow in city limits. You can get charged with felonies for having so much as a single shot .22 in many cities like that. To a lot of city folk, it doesn't matter that the Constitution guarantees the right to own and carry firearms, they won't tolerate you having any. Combine that with the fact that the anti-hunting crowd tends to congregate in those cities, and it's a miracle that dc has an urban hunt.

  • @pistolpete65
    @pistolpete65 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

As someone involved in UK forestry I can say that deer get used to the noise and movement in the area you are working very quickly if there is no real threat to them directly. I have had Muntjac deer 6ft in front of my tractor skidding logs out of a wood, a male pursuing a female and they could not have cared less that the machine was chasing them down the extraction route.
That's the other point, animals like people will take the path of least resistance and use any cleared pathway.
I would imagine that urban areas would be no different and would expect deer to become acclimatised to human activity within the area very quickly. They should be relatively easy pickings, the difficulty lies in the fact that they could run on to land that you do not have permission to hunt on.
In the UK if shot animal crosses on to a property you do not have permission to hunt on, you have to contact that land owner and ask permission to collect the carcass or if permission is not allowed tell them that the carcass is at 'x' and let them collect it themselves. Your laws may differ.

I think for most of the people who are watching this, The episode was a true reflection of what we go through as deer hunters every day. I’m just not sure if an urban landowner watched this show that they would be influenced to provide more permission to bow hunters in the area. Unless you spine shoot the deer or use poison pods, recoveries crossing multiple property lines are going to happen. Nobody’s going get thrilled to get a call at 9 o’clock at night from somebody wanting to track a wounded deer across their yard. These deer populations in the urban areas need to be managed but it’s not an easy fix.

I think this video mostly demonstrates how hunting is not really an effective population control tool in residential areas. There are many reasons; people are uncomfortable with it, property boundaries are not conducive, hunting operates on fair chase principles that reduce efficacy, ect. We should stop talking about bow hunting as population management… it’s not actually realistic. As hunters, it’s hard to stomach, but gov hunters with silencers and night vision is the only real control tool for deer in these situations. The issue is not that hunting isn’t a good solution to manage (and enjoy) deer populations but the nature of overpopulation (of humans) and subsequent urban/suburban sprawl. Development is the natural enemy of hunting. This video also demonstrates the future of what the final demise of hunting will look like when development reaches far enough that few wild places are left in the continental USA.

On one successful day my buddy & I took 4 deer off a 20 acre piece that was sandwiched between 2 subdivisions. At another point we had 4 bowhunters take 8 deer at one sitting. Hired shooters, got or otherwise, is not necessarily a sure thing either.

I've been hunting Urban deer for years in the Metro Atlanta area around Roswell Alpharetta Johns Creek Crabapple over to East Cobb The deer are there and there's a lot of them.
They're also some really big bucks that lived to be fairly old me and the guy that hunts with me on a regular basis of killed several very nice bucks.
One thing I'm not going to do is pretend it's a hard hunt because it's not once you find the areas these deer hanging out in their relatively easy to kill it's a matter of putting out some cell cameras and getting them patterned, people would say well that's what you do everywhere well it's a little different with big woods deer cuz they're not as restricted as far as their movements Urban deer are heavily restricted on where they can travel once you find their travel corridors I hate to say it but it's basically shooting fish in a barrel.
I'm not going to drop names but there's one crew on here that has TH-cam channel that does a lot of hunting in Atlanta and they make it look like what a tough hunt it can be and how hard it is to kill these big deer It's not really you can bait with corn you put your cameras out once you know they're coming in you slip in there and you kill them It's not that difficult More than anything it's for population control not so much a thrilling hard hunt.
The problem in most cases is too many does eating up the landscape so don't just hunt bucks if a landowner gives you permission.

I’ve bow hunted deer in the DC area for years and recognize the challenges. I thought his sales pitch to the landowners was fine, but would have worn a collared shirt, as appearance matters just as much as the sales pitch. Also, I ask neighboring landowners for permission to retrieve before I hunt, using the same sales pitch. If the landowner says no, I explain that the carcass is then going to rot on their property vice feeding the hungry. As such, I have never been denied permission to retrieve.

I took part in this a lot in the Midwest. Pretty accurate representation. I took out a ton of deer and was lucky enough to get a nice sized piece in a major drainage.
Lots of dark side to it too. People mess with your stuff. Accurate you have to keep your stands with you. Had to hang cameras 20' up or not at all.
-Do your very best to not let people ever know you are there.
-Expect confrontation and be ready to hold your tongue or be a very patient advocate.
-wait til dark to remove deer
-use a cover for the deer
    - BE A GHOST
-Take ONLY very high percentage shots. -ONLY fixed blades. It is another variable.
-Hug the shoulder tight and for heart. You are only taking 20-25 yard perfect angle shots.. period!
-you want that deer dead within 30-50 yards MAX if at all possible. It can get bad in a hurry going further.
-noise and disturbance is not as bad as you think. The deer pattern people. Killed numerous while people were playing in park and mowing. Sometimes it just doesn't matter..
    - early am when everyone is still asleep many times is the best.
-shoot all legal deer that come in bow range. That IS your goal. Being a hypocrite if you don't. Sure, if a stud walks out hold off but not be the norm.
    - use flashlight sparingly. Glad you mentioned this. Another reason why you need that perfect shot.
    - I would set up in less than THE perfect spot cause it would give more distance for animals to travel before going over a border. Missed opportunities but I didnt shoot deer with higher chance to go where I couldn't.
Develop that relationship with the landowner over and over.

I just moved from NOVA (North of VA) and I know very well the area around DC, there it’s one area called “Falls Church” mansions are built there one after another and a lot of deer activity but that people only have contact with humans at their stinky level or on their business, not sure if you guys were there or at the other side of the Potomac. This video highlights the lack of education around wildlife management in this country. I only learned myself how hunting contributes to a healthy, stable population of animals when I took a state-required hunting course. I've heard stories from boomers about how they used to have firearm courses in schools and there were no school shootings *(false flags). I wish I had that growing up.
We need to properly educate the youth of this country around hunting and firearms, but unfortunately it looks less and less every day like that will become a thing again. Of course, your family is your world and therefore I encourage each of you reading this comment to take time out and educate your children or younger family members about the importance of game management, and proper firearm safety.
Anyway, this video just shows how most of the gay, liberal pedophiles who live in Washington DC are blissfully unaware that hunters are the ones conserving animal populations, while they sit in their big mcMansions and complain and hide behind the police.

Study the history of firearms in the UK. We went from being armed, and legally obliged to intervene in crimes in progress, to being completely disarmed, over the course of 300yrs. Guns and Violence, The English Experience, is a good book for reference. You're less than a century behind is, but the pace is quickening...

Unfortunately this video is actually shot in Fairfax County, VA (where I also hunt!), and not in Washington, DC. In the actual District of Columbia, no hunting is allowed, except by US Park Police and US Dept of Ag in Rock Creek Park, which is a National Park. I see trophy bucks on the regular in my neighborhood in the actual DC, and it's so sad that the city won't authorize an urban archery program to mitigate all the problems they cause.

I did a study on the deer population in Oxford, Ohio back in college. Using GIS and other data I was able to determine that the deer were severely over populated given their available habitat.
