I have a 07 accord K24 auto trans with 260k and it is burning oil and has a suspicious whining noise that is consistent until highway speeds. Did I make a good purchase? 😬
@@simonsays582 unsure what the whining noise is, could be a number of things. I had a whining noise coming from my power steering pump. I got an o-ring from the dealership for a few dollars and replaced it myself in a matter of minutes. Mine burns about a quart every 1,000 miles like clockwork and it’s been that way for years. Top it off and it’ll last a lonnggggg time.
Well it burns a lot, then again I bought it off some 19yr old girl and she didn't do any maintenance. Only a couple oil changes for 60k miles driven. Looked at the PCV valve it was ok but hose was almost completely pinched off.
@@simonsays582 it is fairly common for the oil control rings on these to get gummed up over time. I changed the PCV valve on mine and it made no difference.
Might seem so, but washing the engine compartment on old cars is doing more harm than good. For old cars just wipe, this looks like a high pressure or steam clean. That's a NO, for old cars.
@@ericb950 You're making a lot of assumptions here. Clearly the vehicle doesn't have any electrical or engine problems. So what ever cleaning method he used, I think it's safe to say he did it right.

She was an excellent car. Accident happened in November 2018. Also still had the original engine and transmission.
Transmissions only make it to 500K when the driver knows how to baby a transmission. Early transmission failures in older Honda’s generally only happen to people who are rough on them. This excludes those newer CVT’s, those things are expected to fail and none of them will make it to 500K on all original parts.

My 2003 2.4 Accord with the 5MT is still going strong at 171,000 miles. Unfortunately the body has a few dents from parking lots, Colorado mountain roads, and my mom backing into the driver side quarter panel. Mechanically it's great, hoping to get at least 300,000 out of it.
I love my '93 Del Sol Si, 1.6 VTEC 5 speed (original owner). Only 80,000 and in almost perfect shape. Just changed timing belt and water pump. Keeping it forever.

I’ve had my 2003 Honda Accord 2.4L 4 cylinder for almost 18 years now. I get 👀 when I tell people how long I’ve had it. Almost 240,000 miles on it and still going. Just need to watch my oil levels as it consumes oil because of almost 80 miles a day commuting to work and home. Best car I’ve ever owned and gonna try to keep it for 20 years.
It might be something pretty easy like valve guides replacement to stop the oil consuming... If it not and its the piston rings, that is a lot more work and $$ but it is not ever as much as if you had a bigger engine... I have a friend who has sold used Honda and Acura vehicles for over 40 years and he is driving a beautiful, older Civic that has 640,248 miles on the odomoter.. I sat in the car and pulled up that odometer, and there it was!!!! These cars can go a long time if you keep up on the oil and filter...
My sons 2003 accord has this engine with 180,000 miles. Burns a little oil. Had the Cat fault code but Scottys paint thinner trick worked and cleared the code!

I'm so happy I found my 04 Acura tl. She has some body damage and the dam dash is cracked but the engine and transmission is in such good condition. Over 200k miles and she is a v6 but I really don't have performance issues! My plan is to get myself on my feet and keeping my car expenses down helps so much.
Drove my 04 Honda Accord 4 banger from Queens, NY to Orwell, NY back & forth and all I need is 2 full tank of gas & an oil change. Love the car. LOVE IT! 181K going strong!
Scotty I have two 05 Acuras, an MDX and a TL. TL has 145k and the MDX has 125k. I take excellent care of them (adjusted the valves on both!) and they both run and drive like new. 05-06 was peak Honda awesome and I love the V6 power. Yes they need premium and the fuel economy suffers, but I still get 30 on the highway with the TL and that's 270 HP. As long as these are maintained well (especially frequent transmission fluid changes), they will last a very long time.
I had a 2004 CR-V (the only car I ever bought new). Put 225,000 miles on it, and then it got totaled being in the middle of a 3-car accident. 😟😢 I now have a 2014 CR-V that I bought used. Currently has 147,000 miles on it. One thing about certain Honda’s in and around the mid-teens years is that they had issues with the VTC Actuator (causing random brief grinding sound upon a cold startup in the morning). Got it replaced via recall issue (twice), but I still occasionally get that startup sound (especially in colder weather). It also has other ticky-tack issues that are annoying, but it still runs well and gives great mileage (I average 18,000-20,000 per year on it due to my daily commute). Will hold onto it as long as I can. When the time comes, I’ll bump up to a used Pilot. But that won’t be for another 50,000-100,000 miles. 😎 This is my fifth Honda over the last 30 years. With most Honda’s and Toyota’s you can’t miss, unless it’s a used one that was poorly maintained or mistreated.
I thought from the thumbnail you were going to advise against buying a K20/K24 which is one of the best engines of all time. The LS of the 4 cylinder world... Agree. The J series v6 and accompanying transmission are lackluster compared to Honda's 4bangers
Don't buy any honda with the 1.5 liter with a turbo if you live in a area that gets extreme cold temperatures. 1.5 liter can't get up to operating temp if you have heating fan on high. You end up with oil dilution and very poor heat inside the cab. The 1.5 liter is a three season engine.
Look at my comment below, 2 years ago. Today our original owner 2004 Accord with the 2.4 DOHC (4 cylinder) just turned 399,400 miles on the original drivetrain. No issues starting or running, no oil leaks and no smoking. Seems to still have the same power as when new. We've never been inside the engine more that replacing the valve cover gasket, and checking valve lash ( all are good). She wants us to drive it until 403,00 miles or so then trade it in so she can get a SUV. We've just "maintained" this car and never really "baby'ed" it. Our garage wants to acknowledge us when it's in for it's first oil change beyond 400,000 miles.
Normally agree Scotty but the J30 V6 of those years was extremely reliable with belts replaced. Someone is near 900k on an original engine with no valve adjustments done. I agree the vcm and newer 3.5 was prone to more issues.
I have a Honda Accord 2.4 i- vtec 2006 here in Sweden, 489 000 miles on it and it still runs great. Only changed the clutch and the timing chain. I also have an Audi A4 2013 with half of the miles and a lot of issues. Never a german car again.
That Accord looks like a car I used to have. 2004 LX, 2.4L white with ivory interior. Good car. Lost it in a flood. Couldn’t be salvaged. Got a ‘15 Accord EXL, same engine and colors. After 19 months of ownership I have only driven 8K miles (working at home). Car has only 66K miles on it. TPMS driving me crazy though.
J series V6 Hondas are known to be bulletproof . One of the most reliable engines out there . All it needs is a regular oil changes and valve lash adjustments every 100k miles .
The 2liter K20C2 None turbo In our 2020 Civic Sport Sedan with a 6 speed manual trans Is running like a TOP, Don't need a turbo or High pressure fuel injection, So with the temps below 30⁰ all the time and allowing the car to warm up a few min the fuel mileage is down a few. 😎👍.
I also have a 2020 Civic Sport Sedan with a manual transmission and 2.0 K20C2 port injected engine. Can’t beat that settup in a modern Civic for reliability! 👍🏻 Mine is Modern Steel Metallic Gray 🙂
Got mine in the summer with 239000km everyone was like omg the km are too high but I went for it knowing Scotty would approve no rust on it well maintained I love my accord !!!!
05 Honda Element over 300k Miles . I change the oil every 3 months 👍🏼 what a great car .. My next car will be another used element AWD hopefully manual shift 😎 great in a ft of snow with aggressive tires.
Brought brand new my 2.0L Honda Accord 4 cylinder V-tec Model in 2006 (17 yrs ago) . Has clock 375,000 Km to date. The only major repair was to change the transmission clutch plates at 350,000 km. I changed oil every 5,000Km. Honda transmission oil change every 40,000 km. Every other parts is still original. The pick up is still awesome. No regrets cos I got my money worth.
I used to own the 2006 Accord with some options like alloy wheels. After 60k and 4 years, my wife wanted a minivan so decided to sell it. The potential buyer wanted to take it to the mechanic he knows to make sure and I agreed with some anxiety. But the mechanic the buyer knows complimented it so much like Scotty here in front of us and I ended up raising the price a grand and he still bought it.
This white Accord with black door handles is a VP (value package) with manual mirrors and only front speakers , it comes with ABS but it doesn't have Traction control.
I have a 2006 Accord VP in gold. Still runs like clock. No electronic mirrors or stability control, but still has the ABS brakes. Bare - bones, yes but still a well equipped car.
V6 honda Honda J30A engine for Honda Accord for years 2003, 2004 & 2005. ... which returns for a second-straight year on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list
The Honda J series v6 is a great engine also tho scotty. I agree the 4 cylinder is more reliable but I put 200 thousand miles on my accord with a j series. I've even seen people use J series engines in cars for a cheap reliable track build. J series is seriously underrated.

I have a v6 2007 Honda accord and I love it to pieces! It's been my first and only car and I've been driving it about 3 years. Has just over 230K miles on it and I'm hoping if I keep taking care of it I'll get at least 300K out of it. Only problem is the power steering groans, particularly when its cold and the engine isn't warmed up.

Wife has a 09 2.4L crv. Thing is great. 200k miles, runs ok thinking of swapping it with one with lower mileage and keeo it as my daily. 20MPG in city. Not many problems in past 5 years
I have the same car with about the same mileage. The car is perfect and feels tighter than most other cars with a fraction of the mileage. My wife wanted to get a newer car and I told her the exact same thing. We will have a hard time finding something better without spending big money.
I have a 2006 2.4 auto with only 99k miles. It runs amazing and being a small 4 cylinder it gets ok mpg and drives amazing only thing ive had to do was battery brakes tires wipers. Basically all maintenance items. My ac went out but i dont mind it and the suspension could use some new bushings and shocks. My cousin has one with 360k+ on it so im definitely looking foward to having her for a while.
Those k24 engines are good engines. A lot of them develop oil consumption issues after 100k, I think it’s an issue with failing to change to oil. I had a 2012 si that I banged off the rev limiter every time I drove it. Traded her in when the air went out but engine was still going strong
Let's see, pay $13 to $15.00 to fix a speed sensor or buy a new car??? I would pay the $15.00 and 20 min to fix the unit and keep the car. The only thing I see wrong with the car is that it does not have a backup camera. Okay, want and not a need for me!
I have an ‘03 Odyssey with the 3.5 litre V6. It has 360K and counting. We have owned it for 14 years now. It has been on many odysseys across Canada and is literally the best vehicle we have ever owned.
3:41 The 4 cylinder K24 engine versions are some of the best engines ever!!! My 2011 Accord has the K24 Z2 version has only 167,000. Plan on taking it to 350,000.
The v6s last forever I would worry about the transmissions the engines last forever they are simple sohc nothing complicated about them if anything the 2.4 is more complicated
I had a 2004 Honda Accord V6 manual coupe. Don't know what you're talking about here Scotty. I see maintained V6s with 300 and 400k miles all day everyday. Was one of my favorite, zippy, and most reliable cars I EVER owned. Both are good engines. Probably easier to work on the 4 cyl. but I think the extra HP/torque was is worth it on the V6 and the for a V6 it got pretty good gas mileage!
It's not so much the engines that have issues. It's the 5-speed automatic transmissions that were mated to the V6 models. Since you had a manual, it makes sense you didn't have any issues.
Got the v6 but and it’s a rebuilt.. it doesn’t have any problem. The gas is pretty good compared other v6 cars. Just had to replace a o ring replaced because there was a leak and that’s pretty much it other than normal services.
I have a 2009 TSX with a K24Z3 engine in it (very similar to this one) and it has 125k on it and runs like a dream! Plan on supercharging it this summer tho cause it's very slow lol.
These Hondas use the k20 engine, which is legendary. This might be the best engine that Honda has ever made, and it was used in the 2003 to 2007 Honda Accord and CRV.
To be clear, I'm saying you don't need to buy a Honda with a V6 engine, not the 4 cylinder engine shown in the video

"I just hear normal noises, I don't hear any groaning"

Might seem so, but washing the engine compartment on old cars is doing more harm than good. For old cars just wipe, this looks like a high pressure or steam clean. That's a NO, for old cars.

This excludes those newer CVT’s, those things are expected to fail and none of them will make it to 500K on all original parts.

Got it replaced via recall issue (twice), but I still occasionally get that startup sound (especially in colder weather). It also has other ticky-tack issues that are annoying, but it still runs well and gives great mileage (I average 18,000-20,000 per year on it due to my daily commute).
“But he’s gotta buy another car!” Lmao! I literally laughed out loud
Honda K, there is no substitute!
I have a 2009 TSX with a K24Z3 engine in it (very similar to this one) and it has 125k on it and runs like a dream! Plan on supercharging it this summer tho cause it's very slow lol.
Hi there Scott yes I watched your video and I have a 2006 Honda Accord too buy it used with 127,200 miles thanks for letting me know I got a good car
These Hondas use the k20 engine, which is legendary. This might be the best engine that Honda has ever made, and it was used in the 2003 to 2007 Honda Accord and CRV.
Don't forget it was also in the the RSX 02-06
This is actually the K24 engine my 8th gen civic si has a K20Z3 engine my brothers 8th gen accord has a K24
Civic Type R EP3
I have just bought a K24 Honda Accord because of you ( or partially). 345 000 kilometers on the clock.
