These videos have made me crave sardines again. After the last video, I made a sardine and fettuccini dish which was excellent. Going on a Sardine Expedition tomorrow.
Sardines are one of the things that makes life worth living. For sardines in water I recommend dredging in flour and sauteing in olive oil and soy sauce. Also, I recommend J-Basket Saba-Kabayaki Seasoned and Broiled Mackerel. When properly sourced and prepared mackerel is incredibly delicious.
Great sardines. Inspired by your show, drove around LA buying sardines. Going on sardines ONLY diet starting tomorrow. Bought over 50 cans. Cheapest (a little dent) was 0.69 cents. The most expensive was $26. I hope have some secret ingredients. Like Golden Tooth inside
Great review! I actually like sardines in water, but too many of them are cheap and scaly. I can't wait to try the Trader Joe's! (big fan of Trader Joe's generally). Sometimes the weird thing in a sardine is an egg sac, and sometimes it's a liver, but both are very good and healthy. 🐟
@@bushwp11 Thank you!! I’m glad you enjoy them! I can’t recommend anyone eat food past the Best By date, but personally I’ve had canned food/meats that were perfectly fine years after the best by. I always inspect the can and the food obviously, but I’ve never had any issues. I ate sardines past the best by date and they tasted better than the new can I had. I keep all my canned stuff in a cool, dry area.
Nice review, I think I might be hesitant to try some of those alien bits though! 😒🐟👽 I also had a thought, since you really love the chronchy spines and skins too, what do they do with all of the spines and skin taken out of the cans of boneless/skinless sardines? 🤷♂ Maybe some company can make for you a special limited edition "Sardine Expedition Skin And Bones" variety with no meat?! 🤣 Might be a little too much though, I don't think I'd buy it! 😬 Although . . . it might work well in a salad?
Great videos! I'm enjoying them all. I thought that the 1st unknown part that you ate was an egg sack. When you ate a 2nd one like it and and you said that the interior was "bead like", I was convinced that both of those were egg sacks. Every female fish approaching spawning has 2 of those. The longer slivery/white 3rd unknown was highly likely a milt (sperm) sack. That is their appearance in all male fish at spawning time. Only the size varies with the size of the male fish. If spawning season was approaching, or going on, when they were netted, both egg and milt sacks would be very developed and easy to see even in small fish like sardines. In a live fish, those eggs would have been the color of an egg yolk from a chicken egg. The milt sack retained it live fish color.
Happy New Year!!! I’m happy you like the videos!!! I appreciate all the info on what I was eating. So I ate a bunch of reproductive part haha. 😆 It was good though!!! Thanks so much!
I just moved into a new apartment and shoppd at trader joes. i picked up a stack of the sardines in spring water and i was extremely impressed. they're so big and meaty, not too salty, great price, i think $2? i really love sardines and tinned seafood but i just can't justify the price, i prefer whole chickens and breaking them down into parts myself. I prefer a 20 gram protein to $2 ratio or less and the sardines in spring water hit the perfect sweet spot.
Congrats on the new apartment and loading up on sardines! Weren’t those good? Those have been the only water sardines so far that I’ve really enjoyed! I had family send me some to try and I only have one can left that I’m hoarding lol.

@@SardineExpedition There's another reason to consume sardines......VITAMIN D !!! This incredible vitamin builds up your bones, whitens your teeth, strengthens your immune system, on and on...We can only get vit D by sunshine, or food...and sardines are one of the few foods to supply this vitamin. Since it may be difficult to get sunshine in Alaska, sardines are about the only way to get this essential vitamin...Here's to your good health !

Oh, I think I've been missing out! I routinely ignore water-based sardines if an oil-based one is right next to it, and TJ's smoked have been one of my go-to's (though now it'll be Polar!). @@Pielededrac ahhhh thank you! Tried to look it up last night and nada. I actually love roe, I think it just caught me off guard. Mystery meat! Love it 😁
So, the “sardines” in water are actually herring, Clupea harengus, which cleaves to the naming convention in Canada. History, it’s a mess. Herring and true sardines, like those in oil here (Sardina pilchardus), don’t really taste all that much alike, other than just being oily fish. Herring packed in the same olive oil would not be mistaken for the pilchards in a blind taste test.
I don't know if you have White Castle or Crystal Burger restaurants where you are, but if you do, always ask for extra mustard packets when you order. Their Dusseldorf mustard will transform the worst sardines into a tasty snack. Bad water packed ones are the ones that are helped most. I'm guessin' that the size of the three sardines is why you are finding actual "fish parts" in the carcasses. On smaller fish, they are probably in there, but they just look like "brown stuff". But he ate ALL of the other one. Just Sayin'! lol
Haha yes he did! I don’t have one of those as I’m in Alaska, but that sounds good!! Is that mustard sold in stores? I loved finding all the parts! It was fun and I hope I have more cans like that! Thanks for watching! 😊☺️
@@SardineExpedition Yes it is. It is a creamy spicy German mustard (bolder than Dijon) and may just be labeled that way or as Dusseldorf. I don't know if the White Castle/ Krystal version is sold as a brand or not. I know that Taco Bell sells its sauces in bottles now, so maybe. I always ask for "a bunch of mustard packets" at the drive thru, so I always have plenty.
@ yes, it was kind of vanilla and some tropical essence. Had a soft texture, a bit softer than avocado. I really enjoyed it. It did smell a bit like rotten onions, but limberger stinks and tastes good!

Sardines: when they are being prepared for packing in the cans or tins, the heads a cut off but that is it, most of your small sardines are processed with their guts still in them.
Definitely both pilchards, not sprats. I prefer the smaller sprats because they accumulate less toxins over their shorter lives. Yeah, I think that organ looking thing is the mass of eggs. Somewhat unappealing, but edible. EDIT: another commenter said it was the "milt". Even less appealing than eggs. 😉
