What’s your favorite of the $1.00 sardines? Thank you for watching! Heather & Winston❤
Hi Heather and Winston. I tried the ALDI Hot Sardines. I didn’t like them very well. I got 2 sardines in the cans. I found the Great Value brand better than ALDI. I’ve eaten better. Looks like what you’ve got is basically what I got. Not the greatest.
@eddiemoore8468 Yep, I don’t find anything mind blowing….but I did enjoy these more than other!! Thanks, Eddie!
I'm a sardine snob. I don't eat $1 sardines. 🐟
Chicken of the sea olive oil or mustard!
@RandomMichael I need to compare their olive oil and EVOO! I haven’t had either yet!
Thank you!! I was just near Aldi today and wondered what you thought of their sardines.
I love your videos. Other channels like this would make us suffer through 10 minutes of lavalier mic chewing and throat noises. You speed through it every time. You have no idea how much I appreciate that. Not to mention that you don't drag on and on about nothing badly just to make your videos hit a certain minute mark. Great job.
Thank you for the feedback! Much appreciated!! I lower the volume on my chewing too most of the time and do the fast fwd chew lol because that’s just awful to sit through in my opinion. I show the fast fwd to keep it a genuine reaction though. I do try to keep it relevant and moving as I’ve seen 30 minute sardines reviews in my recommended and can’t phantom what they could talk about for that long!!! Let me know if you try the Aldis!!
@@SardineExpedition Even if you FF through the chewing, we can still see if you have a reaction in real time without wanting to claw our ears out.
I've watched those videos, and they are truly unwatchable IMHO. Blathering on and on about nothing, just to make it longer for longer's sake.
@73twall probably to run more ads. I don’t even run mid roll ads on my videos over 8 mins. I deselect that option. I’d rather you enjoy the video vs collect a few pennies. 😁
Heather and Winston, thank you for always showing the back panel ingredients, as well as giving you honest appraisals.
You’re very welcome! Appreciate you watching!
This is the best video on this channel so far. The facial expressions were priceless.
Thank you!!!! ☺️ I’m glad you enjoyed it!!!!
Heather's report is very significant.
a) By the end of the month, most need top value because spent or skint; b)The country of origin is usually - yes, misleadingly - solely where it's packed; c) Can always lightly rinse them, avoiding the junk-gunk, and, with this reasoning, can add the right seasoning.
Always a pleasure, watching and listening to Heather 🧡 💯 ✅️
...& Winston !
Very true!!! Thanks, Lawrence!! Always appreciate you watching/commenting!
OMG, I just purchased the Aldi ones in hot sauce Sunday. I haven't tried them yet. My favorite $1.00 sardine is Chicken of the sea in Olive Oil.
Good timing!!!! Let me know when you try the Aldi hot sauce!
@@SardineExpedition Absolutely!
Nothing is more entertaining than a Pug crunchin' and smackin' on a Pork Rind. LOL
hahaha I agree!
The sardines in oil are tail pieces from breeding size fish, when I worked at Stinson Canning Beach Cliff was their brand, always fresh and locally caught, the mustard came in 55 gallon barrels and was cut 5 parts water 1 part mustard, incidentally the mustard would eat the paint off the floor, nice show ❤❤
Oh my gosh on the mustard story! 😅😅😅. Thanks for the info!! Appreciate you watching!!!
The mustard ones look enticing. I loved watching Winston eat the pork rind.
Hahaha his crunching is hilarious!
Great review. I have to admit that I probably would not purchase these, based solely on the ingredients. I’m a poor old man on Social Security, but I’m willing to spend a little more money for better quality food. Thanks for taking us along!
Hey Tom!!! It’s nice there are so many options out there and a few really great ones with clean ingredients. I don’t freak out about trying a can of sardines with some junk in it here and there, but I definitely prefer simple and clean ingredients for a few more bucks like you. I’d throw these in a bag or truck for on the go now and then.
Yes, you didn't live this long eating soybean oil my friend!
@@intentionally-blank, I do have my vices, but sardines are a comfort food for me, and as such, I have certain preferences. One of those is staying away from soy products.
Love the animation at the end!!!!❤
Thank you!!! A subscriber John Rice did that for the channel!! I love it too!
Winston is too funny!
Ooookay! I did get to go to town yesterday afternoon, and managed to make a stop at Aldi's. They don't have any riding carts there, but I went in anyway, and made my way around with a walking cart. I found the sardines on a tiny end-cap display, and picked through to find a couple cans of each of their varieties - checked out, got my quarter back, and headed for home. Finally got to try them late last night - opened a can of the mustard sauced 'dines and gave them a try. Wow! They were the biggest sardines I've seen yet! And they were GOOD! Had almost a sweet taste to them, and as you said, these were firm textured but tender at the same time. I'll have one of the other varieties today, and I'm pretty sure I'll like them as well. So as far as I'm concerned, your review was right on the mark! I'll save those $3 - $5 cans for something really special, and live on Aldi's and Bumblebee. Thank you again - you're doing GOOD!
I’m happy you were able to make it there!!! That’s awesome they had the same ones that I reviewed as many have said their Aldi has the small sprats showing from Poland!! I’m glad you enjoyed them! Sounds like we have a similar palette!! I appreciate the update!! Thank you!☺️
I like the mini Winston on the top shelf .
Thanks!!! You’re the first person to mention that!😁
Northern Catch for a buck 1.00 👌.
The Chicken of the Sea they sell here (S. Illinois) are in olive oil. They have a green background can. I haven't seen the one you showed on the screen with amber background in soybean oil.
Yes! They even have one that says extra virgin olive oil. I should compare those! Thanks!
Really good review. I like that you compared Aldi sardines to Great Value, Beachcliff, and Chicken of the Sea. Thanks for putting the pkg next to the tin. That makes it easy to track which sardine is which. And thanks for keeping your video to 10 minutes.
You’re welcome! I appreciate the feedback back and you watching! Glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you! ☺️
I've only gotten the Bumblebee brand for the $1 sardines. I'll have to get some Aldi sardines when I get the chance. 🐟 The nacho cheese 🧀 pork rind looks delicious. I'll have to get some too. Thanks for the review Heather and Winston.👍🏼
Oh man, those pork rinds are gooooood!! I love the porking good brand because the pieces are big and good for slapping a sardine on them!!😁😁
After a recent cold snap of single digit temps plus 11 inches of snow, I've pretty much depleted my supply of pantry proteins. The thought of even opening a can of cheap sardines right now makes my stomach gurgle! lol! That being said, I still get a kick out of watching you and Winston! Keep up the good work! ☺
I hope you’re hangin in there and staying warm!!! Take a canned fish break for a bit for sure! I appreciate you still watching even being sick of sardines at the moment! We will be here when you’re ready!😁
Heather, highs are back in the low 40s and my driveway is pretty much cleared of snow! I think I may have to venture out today, maybe hit up the local Chinese buffet. haha! Hope you have a great day!
@richardcurtis5281 oh I’m glad to hear it’s warming back up. Temps were warm here last 2 weeks so we got a ton of rain which would freeze overnight and blah blah you get the point! Much colder this week in single digits, but sun will be out and no snow or rain for the next week or so!
Good review Heather! THANKS for this video!!
Thank you!! Appreciate you always watching!!! ☺️☺️☺️
Great sweater
Thanks, Cathy!!! It was so warm and comfy!! Like wearing a fleece blanket!😆
Very nice. Thank you.
Appreciate you watching!!!
Thanks Heather ! I have a local Aldi so ill grab some and see what else they have ! I just picked up some Tajin seasoning with lime , gonna try it on some sardines in oil and see what happens !
Ooo Tajin and lime sounds gooood! Let me know if your Aldi sardines look like mine! Lots of comments from people and there’s had 5-6 sardines in the can!
We're lucky enough to have an Aldi right next door, always an interesting selection at good prices. Had no idea it is German owned, probably explains the good cheese selections. Winston's a boss.
Hehe Winston is MY boss lol. I have seen the cheeses there!! They do have some good stuff there sometimes! Right next door is quite convenient!!
Yes, German just like Trader Joe's.

I like the smoked oysters at Aldi's too!
I think I have a box of them to try! 😁
Very timely video. I tried some of these the other day and quite liked them myself.
The problem is I buy a good many sardines from all over the place and I couldn't remember where I'd picked them up from. Now I know...thanks.
That’s funny! I also thought the box
Would say Aldi on it! That threw me off!!
You are far braver than I am. I would have started reading those ingredient, dropped the can and ran away! Good that you did not subject Winston to those :P
Haha yes, I don’t love eating the funky ingredients. I try to spread them out so I’m not doing it often. I do it for you all and my curiosity. 😁
I’m gonna have to go to aldis, those are huge sardines and your review is encouraging.

Thanks so much!! I appreciate you watching! 😁
I had the Aldi hot sauce ones today for lunch. Didn't notice any lemon flavor to it, and my can had the big ones in it too.
Makes me wonder about the consistency that I mentioned! It was extremely lemony on the first bite. More lemony than the KO lemon sardine I had the day prior. I liked them though!
I share pork rinds with my cats as well. Winston would fit right in....unless he does not prefer the company of cats.....
What a timely video, Aldi is about 45 min away from me and I am headed that way tomorrow, so I will pick some up based on your positive recommendation! You have not steered me wrong, thank you.
Have you reviewed sardines in tomato sauce? The large Pampa 15 oz cans are at my Dollar Tree for $1.25 per can!
No way!! I wouldn’t think a cat would eat pork rinds! That’s awesome!!! I’m glad I timed the video before your Aldi trip! Keep me posted once you try them! I did the king Oscar tomato review so far, but I have a lot more to try here! I think I’ve seen those Pampas somewhere!
I have put off trying them, felt they would just be the same as the other low end. Thanks to your video I will try them. I am strictly low cost budget eater so I dont have a fave just cheap that taste good. I like them best packed in water but those are limited in availability where I live. Thanks!
Awesome you’ll have to let me know what you think and grab the water one if they have it!
Thanks Heather..
Thanks for watching, Ron!
Good job, always nice to see you trying all kind of sardines.........Aldi is overall better quality for the cheap stuff.....The hot sauce sardines are made using Harissa, a hot condiment from Morocco and preserved lemons which is also a Moroccan specialty......You make me want to go to Aldi and try them for myself......What I don't like in those Aldi sardines is the artificial stuff and Soy oil......By the way, I have received the Mina sardines and I ate 2 cans yesterday, they are better than back in 2022........So yes, they are good now like you said in your video, but inconsistent.......Keep warm.........😘😍
That harissa was nice after I understood what I was eating!!! I’m glad the new Mina batch was better!!! Hopefully they can stay consistent because I want to order more of those!!! Thanks again for watching!!! Appreciate ya!
@@SardineExpedition You should try the Mina sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Chili Pepper, $30.00 for a 12 pack....😘😍
@Pielededrac oh I will!!! It’s on my radar for sure!!!!
@@SardineExpedition By the way, the "MW Polar Herring, Smoked in Canola Oil, 6.7-Ounce" are down to $2.84 per can, you can buy 1 or up to 10 for this price.......You wanted to try them but did not want to buy the whole case of 12, now is the occasion..........To me these are the best smoked herrings, skin on.........😘😍
@Pielededrac nice! I found it! Thanks!
I love your channel. I love tinned fish, but my wife is very put off by fishy things (I give our Aussie fish oil capsules for her coat, whew, alligator breath). Herring in Louisiana hot sauce is my favorite. And I love Aldi’s. We’ve gotten to buying most of our groceries there because of the price and the produce just seems fresher. Have a great weekend.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you like the channel! I haven’t come across a hot sauce herring yet! I’d like to try it! That’s nice you have an Aldis near by and can save some money there!! You have a great weekend too! 😁
I think I found them at Dollar General or Dollar Tree?
No dollar trees or dollars stores in AK. I wish! 😁
I've been getting the Hot Sauce Sardines from Aldi for a while now, and loaded up some time ago. I like them but the ones you have must be newer because the ones I have didn't come in a box and they don't have lemon in them. I also pick up the smoked oyster, which do come in a box like those and really like them.
I also have a bunch of Beach cliff, Great Value and Bumble Bee sardines in hot sauce, but prefer the Aldi. I'm hooked on the Brunswick Gourmet Sardines you reviewed and get a few delivered every week. I'm going to try the Polar smoked sardines from Amazon that come in a 9.5oz jar next, then the Nuri extra spiced sardines.
I haven't ever tried the sardines in mustard before because I didn't think they'd be good, but I'm going to get some next time in Aldi and give them a try to.
Keep the awesome videos flowin' and give Winston an extra rub! 👍
Hey John!! That’s interesting your hot sauce didn’t have the lemon in it! Had another comment that theirs had 6 in it. I might have my sister sent me more in a year and see if they are completely different. That’s annoying to not know what will be in the can!
I’m glad you’re loving the Brunswicks and branching out! There are so many good ones out there! Let me know if you like the smoked polars! Appreciate you watching us!
Great review! I appreciate your reviewing sardines everyone can find and afford. We love Aldi. Our local store is clean, well-managed, and sells high quality products at great prices. Are these the best sardines ever? Of course not. Are they an amazing value? Yes, especially when you're running a little short on cash, a great source of quick, tasty, protein. At the price-point, you just can't beat the Aldi sardines If you have an Aldi, a must try is Wernesgrüner Pilsner. A truly world-class beer for only $5 for 4 pints, which would go great with the hot sardines. Preserved lemon (salted and fermented like sauerkraut, so there's a little funk from fermentation) is common in the Mediterranean. I love it, but it's probably an acquired taste. Love your channel! 💖🐟
Hi John!!! That’s awesome you have a nice Aldi to shop at! The one I went to years ago was pretty rough! I’d definitely grab some of these to have stacked on the shelf for when the wallet is tight! Have you tried the Aldi sardines in water? Now you’ve got me craving sauerkraut!
Very interesting and you guys are always smooth operators!..😊
There are no one dollar options in Canada anymore, at least to my knowledge!

Finished the final can of Porthos. This one was hot tomato. It really was not hot. I enjoyed it. Good sardines. Only $4.
I need to circle back to Porthos soon
@SardineExpedition On a different topic. I got to compare the best chocolate with a dark chocolate with added canola oil etc. It was.. interesting.
Gosh, this reminds me of a can of Bandi sardines I opened, to find only 2 HUGE sardines.
I haven’t heard of Bandi! Were they decent?
Those huge ones are freakishly huge lol Sourced in multiple places. What, like in a radioactive spill area? ☢️ 😉
Hahaha I can’t confirm or deny that question! The sardine world is so mysterious!! They definitely were some big ole thangs in these cans!
@SardineExpedition for a minute, I thought those were mackerel lol

Thanks for the heads up on these Aldi sardines. It's been years since I've bought sardines at Aldi. @@SardineExpedition Yes, but i really need to talk to someone at Aldi. It looks like it's the same as Walmart that you have to spend $35 or pay $1.99. They also charge you for bags. I find boxes in the store and bring my own bags, do I don't want to pay for bags. They do Instacart too. Their website confused me. I'll probably just use their cart for my grocery list.
I legit came to your channel just to comment to try the Aldi mustard sardines and to my surprise you uploaded the video. So I got to eat mine with you lol
Haha no way that is awesome!! I love it!😍
@ try aldis smoked oysters or smoked red chili pepper oysters if you get a chance (: much firmer and better tasting than the Kroger ones you tried
@KingSavageMatty I believe I have a can of their oysters to try!
Aldi's is way the other side of town for me. Went once, but the store didn't impress me. I'm kind of finding a cheap sardine is about the same everywhere. That said I'm liking the different flavors, that's new to my wheelhouse. I'm also liking the types of smoked fish I've tried lately, and the smoked oysters with red chili peppers were real tasty. I've got more tins of fish on hand than ever before these days. 😋
Sounds like you are doing just fine then!!! I wouldn’t make a special trip if you got some good ones on hand!!! 😁😁
Great for Aldi sardines , I like them to .
I was pleasantly surprised. The quality was much better than I was expecting. Wish I could’ve tried the water now.

I’ll definitely look for it!! We appreciate you watching!!😁
Not a fan of sardines since I met canned Herring, but I do still occasionally eat sardines. I only get ALDI. They don't seem as fishy as other brands. The can with oil you opened, the fish looked a bit beat up. My sardines are always visually pleasing, somewhat firm, and intact.
Yeah the oil one was a bit beat up. It might be because it was so tender and getting rocked back and forth in the can. I hope I can try the herring sometime!
Aldi Northern Catch in oil is the usual Sardine I buy. The cans have always contained three pilchards. I have always enjoyed their taste and budget friendly price. Even better now, since watching you, I sometimes have them with pork rinds which has been a delicious experience. Sardines with pasta, oil, garlic pepper and grated parmesan is also a goto 😋
That’s interesting that all of mine had 2 in them! One of them being large! For $1.00 I’d stack em up for a back up for sure over the other brands. Wish I could’ve tried the water one though!
I buy the ALDI sardines in water and spice them up with fresh ground black pepper. 🤔🤔🤔 I think ALDI used sunflower oil before they switched to soybean oil. Changed the flavor.
I need to try black pepper on them! I love the king Oscar spicy black pepper sardines!
OK....maybe I should try these.

@@mikehammer2075 Thank you! I do try to review everything I can so anyone can at least see what’s in the can--even if our tastes and preferences differ! Appreciate you watching!
Good timing! I had some Aldi sardines in Hot Sauce, so I ate them while watching. I had some split pea soup cooking away. My Northern Catch ingredients were: Sardines, water, maltodextrin, acetic acid, salt, paprika, modified corn starch, spice extractive, (including paprika (color), xanthan gum, polysorbate 80, caramel color
Product of POLAND
And I had at least 6 small sardines in mine. And no box.
I LOVED the Chicken of the Sea Louisiana Hot Sauce ones. I licked the tin dry. So I bought 2 more. Aldis have a lingering heat, but miss out on flavor.
I definitely didn’t get the 3 Big’Uns that you got in all yours. Mine were loosely packed and just OK.
That is so interesting and goes with my point of the different sourcing and consistency! So odd you’re had 6 and mine all had 2! I’m surprised there was that much of a variation. That’s crazy!!
@@SardineExpedition YEAH! Like you said, no 2 cans of sardines are alike. I eat like Winton. I was through 3/4 of the can before I even thought about counting them. No lemon in mine. I did make patties out of soup can mackerels again. That is a delicious quickie go-to meal. Added my homemade tartar sauce on top of it too. Good suggestion by you.

Cloverleaf sardines in olive oil without bones and skins. That's what I tried today. Good. 2 for $5. Ate them with a leafy salad and pomegranate dressing. Also, picked up of millionaires, because I like them.

Wish I had one too and a Trader Joe’s! Please let me know how the eels go!😁
Last 2 cans of sardines I got had 2 big sardines pieces in them. Kinda weird to see for me. They were the cheapest on sale ones.
Did they have more in the can previously? Sounds like there is a consistency issue after reading the comments!
@SardineExpedition it was small ones, with the can packed full. These 2 cans had just two large pieces. Looking same on the outside of the can as before. But I see you have big ones in cans also. You call the fish size different names.
It's labelled as a generic 'hot sauce' but it's a Moroccan harissa hot sauce. Moroccan cuisine features lots of lemons.
Yes! I understand that now and after I ate the rest of the can I enjoyed it more and more.
Found some dried sardines for Winston. Thry're called Yappetizers and have a 2 year shelf life.
Haha I like the name!!! I’m sure he’d love those!
I have enjoyed sardines for more than 50 years. The ones in mustard when I was a kid were smaller, more uniform and packed tightly in the can. Almost dry
That’s interesting! Did you like them better than how mustard sardines are now?
@@SardineExpedition there wasn't a lot of options back then, and I can't remember the brand, maybe King Neptune? The sardines I eat today come from the Baltic region or off the Europe coast and they are very different from each other. There is a big difference, the Polish ones seem to be sloppy in the can
@mikekokomomike the ones from Poland are on the sloppy side. King Oscar’s are packed pretty nicely.
@@mikekokomomike Conservas Small Sardines are tightly packed. Very good. Better than Baltic sprats, I think,
I noticed the labels on the back of the 3 northern catch had 3 different salt levels . 2 of them were pretty high compared to most others. 340, 850, and 660 grams of salt
Yeah, it’s gotta be the difference in the sauces added! 850 is high but I honestly didn’t find any of them to be salty. I do like salt though!
try eating the salty ones with a plain microwaved potato.
it is a complete meal.
I'm not on a budget or fixed income, I just like a good value. And the ALDI sardines in hot sauce is the one I put in my cart once I sort through the pile to find some. I'm not sure why they now come in a small box. Maybe it's cheaper than advertising on a can.
It’s been interesting reading all the comments on how Aldis sardines vary so much. I had no idea the box wasn’t the normal way that come!!! Annoying that it’s changes up. I want to try them again in the future and see if they’ve changed!
I like fishes with hot sauce and tomato sauce, no lemon. Have you found any Polar brand with Jalapeno and tomato sauce?

I am puzzled why it is so difficult to find sardines in mustard. My mom used to always have some around, but I have not seen any with mustard, any brand, in a long time. I have been adding my own mustard to sardines, and they are great. Maybe it has something to do with long term stability?
I’m finding them often in stores still. Great value, chicken of sea,King Oscar, Aldi brand, bumblebee all have them. I’ve yet to find the KO in my store, but they are available. Shelf life seems about normal for them. I’ve been able to find them all here in Alaska except for the King Oscar. I do like adding my own mustard too!
Germany always have a good mustard
I just had a can of Hill Country Fare Fair dollar a can in soybean oil.
HEB brand.
Product of Morocco.
No real problems with them.
Does HEB have a good sardine selection? I love that store!
@SardineExpedition Yes they have a good selection.
They had the mina sardines for 2.88.
@leedoss6905 I’m jealous!!
I just purchased some sardine pate from our local Lidl, which is your trader Joe's. Guess it's what we used to just call fish paste in the past.
Let me know what you think of it! I’ve got a few cans of pate to try!
What I do now is use chopsticks 👍
😁😁😁
After a closer look at the new packaging, the can is larger I guess to fit the x-large sardine catch their fishermen had. The new Nutrition Fact sheet was a bummer for me as they added 2g of Sugar to the hot sauce. The only reason I eat sardines is for the health benefits of omega 3 fats for the brain and the added sugar ruins it. I did rinse off all their added ingredients including the 660 mg of sodium before eating so all was not lost.
I also eat their 14.75 oz can of Wild Alaska pink salmon with salt for less than $3 that is good for 2 meals. Until I find out something negative about that... Thanks for making me take a closer look at what I'm eating.
I’m glad it was helpful!! I’ve been hearing their canned trout is good. Not sure of the nutritional info on it, but have you tried it?
@@SardineExpedition No, I haven't seen it or tried it. I only eat small oily fish for the nutritional value with the least amount of heavy metals and contaminants and no farmed fish. There's not much left on the planet for me to choose from..lol
@Gary65437 😆😆
fellas get you a 'dine queen like this
At the very beginning I was focused on the zoomed in Winston and rack of sardines and I wasn't reading the text bubble so thought you said "Do you want to try all deez sardines or what?" 😅 Then as you kept talking I realized it was "Aldi's" brand. 🤭
Hahahaa sometimes it moves fast!!! That’s funny!!😆
More about the calcium content of these. Well, for good or ill, I just bought 3 cans each of the 4 types: water, soybean oil, mustard, hot sauce. All were just over a buck at the local Aldi's. The calcium in the water variety is off the charts: 867 mg in a 85 g drained serving size (which also has 18 g protein). That really is an outlier that makes no sense to me.
I saw some sardines packed in lemon sauce i want to try. Have a good day. (Chicken of the Sea) Brand
I like the lemon sardines. Gives it just a little something extra! 🍋
I went ahead and ordered an 18 can box. I hope they are good.
Let me know if you like them!
Will do
Are these bone-in, skin-on?
Yes, they were!
If you were to put out more videos more frequently I'd have to retire to keep up. That wouldn't be a bad life. I can't help but adore little creatures like Wilson. I'd probably feed them too much if I had any. Ok I can't wait to see what's next. I've got a couple of days off so I'll have some mackerel or salmon and share it with my feral kitty. She won't let me pet her but she's started rubbing on my ankles so that's good enough. Take care out there. 😁👍
Hahah I can slow down the videos! It would give me more free time 😆😆
Mustard and the Louisiana hot sauce is the best. Can’t remember the brand but it’s not that one. It is the cheaper ones.
Great comparison…..just a gentle suggestion…..the sped up chewing kind of ruins the anticipation of waiting and watching for your reaction. Your channel is really fun to watch. Thank you
Thank you!!! If I don’t speed it up the videos would be so long!! I tried to find the balance between not wasting your time, but also including my reaction when it comes! It’s a tough balance, but it seems most prefer the boring chews sped up. I’ll keep that in mind though. Appreciate you watching!!☺️
I have half a dozen Aldi stores nearby, and sometimes they have sardines in water. A can in my pantry is sardines, spring water, and salt, and is from Poland, which suggests Sprattus sprattus (brisling, though much bigger fish than in King Oscar cans) from the Baltic.
I’m really dubious about fish packed in oil. Maybe a big producer trying to keep up its reputation will actually ensure it gets extra virgin olive oil if that’s what the can has printed on it, but olive oil is so often adulterated. With soy or sunflower oil it’s real, but of course an inferior oil. Water is at least GENUINE WATER…
Very true!! If there could just be transparency on labels!!! Water is the safest bet!
