Howdy from Texas. I commented before on another of your videos that my personal go to sardines are the Polar sardines that also come in that same round container with the thick plastic lid. The Polar brand are beautifully hand packed and have a very nice smokey flavor to them as well. The meticulous way that the sardines are hand packed and because of how you can see the actual sardines in the can before opening it. Led me to believe, the first time I came across these, that what I was looking at was simply a very well done graphic image instead of the actual sardines. I found that I really do enjoy that type of lid much better for two important reasons. Firstly, you never have to worry about the lid snapping Free spraying it's liquid all over you and your surroundings. And secondly, there is zero chance that you are going to accidentally cut yourself with this lid unlike those razor sharp metal ones. Polar also does glass jars of sardines that carry considerably more sardines than what you would get in a can of any brand. These are really handy because they are resealable. Polar also has a fantastic smoked herring. They have a skin on version as well as a skin off version. They are both boneless however. I myself prefer the skin on variety. But these are not the tiny little herring you are probably more used to. Each can has two very good sized herring fillets that are of a proportion for a proper meal. They are hardwood smoked, no fake smoke or chemicals involved. And they taste amazing. I'll often have these on a plate with some rice, pickled vegetables and jalapenos. On a plate they look more like fish fillets you might be served in a nice restaurant rather than something that you just popped out of a tin. I keep these in my panry all the time.

Great review! Brunswick sardines are excellent quality and a great value. You definitely want to also try the Brunswick Wild Caught Sardine Fillets in Hot Pepper. Less that $2 a can and excellent, one of the few hot pepper sardines (actually herring which I prefer) that really packs a great pepper flavor, spicy, but not too much. 💖🐟

@SardineExpedition I've never seen them in local stores, but possibly online they might be. I'm very content, though, getting the other Brunswick's plus the Baltic brislings!
@@SardineExpedition Only the jalapeno, they are pretty good for a pepper flavor, my tolerance for spice is a bit high as I deal with reapers these days but I did get a mild tingle off of them. They are probably hotter than the Louisiana ones you did a video on, though mileage may vary as they say.
That explains why my Brunswick herring fillets became sardine fillets. My dad, brother and I eat them but not until much later in life. I started on them and then onto smoked mussels and oysters. Being in Canada we don't have as much variety compared to the the states and mostly see only Brunswick and Cloverleaf. Golden smoked are the best and in oil over water. Tomato, hot sauce and lemon are a pass. If I want hot sauce i can do it myself. Interesting channel I've learned a lot already.

Just finished Brunswick kippers. They were excellent. One piece took up the entire tin. Not too much room for liquid. Bit saltier than smoked. When you chew more, you get more of the smoked flavour. No bones.
@SardineExpedition One thing I noticed is that they contain Selenium. This is an element that we need a little of in our diet. It can also have a protective effect against heavy metals like mercury. For example, in the brain. Another food which contains selenium is Brazil nuts, but these can be radioactive.
Just read through the comments here...learned so much about the different fish that are called "sardine"! I've just been popping open the cans and scarfing them down...I need to pay more attention!
Brunswick never disappoints, I enjoy the polar herring filets 6.75 oz tin, only drawback is I wish they were in olive oil. Another favorite is King Oscar Makerel .
I threatened to fix my wife a gochujang sardine and stilton cheese omelette the last time she was sick. She recently set a record for consecutive days of being well.
Hi Nancy! I wouldn’t recommend it personally. The ones I have with the plastic lids I always eat before the best by date just because the plastic doesn’t seem as reliable to stay completely sealed longer term. That’s just my personal opinion on it.
Here in my area, Brunswick sardines are difficult to find. I've never tried the round see through can sardines you tested. I'll try them soon. Herring are good, I especially like them in pickled in Wine Sauce. The herring in olive oil are also good. But when I eat sardines, I want sardines. In my opinion, a great sardine beats out any canned herring in taste and texture. Thanks
Yes, I prefer sardines over the herring too! I had to order more Brunswick in the round cans. Couldn’t find more and they are so good I have to keep a few on hand!! Amazon sells them individually which is nice so you’re not forced to buy it in a 12 pack if you don’t want.

I've eaten plenty of 6-10 year old sardines, clams, oysters and other meats. BTW, have you every tried canned octopus or squid? They are great! @SardineExpedition you know, I found them very similar in taste and texture. I really liked them both equally. Did get a can, long time ago, that was very tough. I like chewy texture but not tough. Looking forward to your review. Carry on. 😎
@Christopher-b1p having been a prepper for over 50 yrs, those types of can sealing have not held up as long as normal full metal sealing. They are subject to easy piercing. And they do in fact loosen up easier. If you don't mind any of that, by all means have what you want. Understand the life span of the can will not hold up thru the years. I love sardines. Cant believe I found this channel. I have a question for everyone. Does anyone remember a brand called Norwegian. I remember they had a key glued to the can and you would clip the key on a tab and roll back the lid. I just remember those are what I started eating when I first ate sardines and they were way smaller than the ones get today and in my opinion by being small they were way more flavorful. Can anyone remember these and does anyone know if you can still purchase them from somewhere or did they stop making them altogether.
Those were "sardines" when I was a kid in the 1960s. That's the only kind my mom bought. And that key pre-dated the pull top tin. Like how church keys were needed to open cans of beer before pull tabs. Yeah....I'm old...
Sorry never heard of tinned sardines with "key", but as I kid I remember SPAM cans with keys. Many kids like me always wanted that key. Well google Sardine cans with key, you might get lucky. When I did, I do recall seeing that type of tin and my parents opening them up. Contents? Don't remember.
Almost left Publix today with both of those . Didn't want to take the chance on them because of being so pricey . Now I wish I had gotten them . Darn !
Oh dang it! I understand though! That’s a big part of why I started my channel. I couldn’t find reviews on sardines I wanted to try, but didn’t want to take a chance and waste money. So now I just roll the dice to hopefully help others! 😁😁. Maybe you can grab them next trip!
@SardineExpedition Cloverleaf has the best Alaskan sockeye salmon (my cat loves them) and they process it in North Ameica. Other companies send their products overseas. Their products are traceable on their website. Food Scientist here.
@SardineExpedition My previous message didn't get saved. I like cloverleaf very much. Apparently, they were owned by Brunswick at one time, and may still be part of a larger group with them.
Cloverleaf Alaskan sockeye salmon is excellent. Their cans are traceable, and they catch and then pack in North America. Other companies ship to Asia to pack
By the way. The herring is from Canada, not Latvia as you mentioned. Look a the product label on the can you displayed. That is a Canadian process creating the wonderful flavour you like so much.

Producers vary in their approaches to best-buy dates on this relatively new packaging tech. For example, Brunswick has been slightly more conservative (2 years) than MW Polar (3 years). The two companies who developed the technology, though, say it’s good for five years, same as traditional canning.
@@deweyd8210 sure if you trust what corporations tell you. Personally, I do not. Sounds as though even they cannot agree on what the true shelf date is. 💖🐟
Thank you so much! Are you referring to the jalapeño one I showed at the end or do they have a different hot pepper one?? Do tell!!
Great video . Well produced and well presented . Peace ✌️ , Be Free .

@@Christopher-b1p I don’t have those in Alaska😕
Just finished Brunswick kippers. They were excellent. One piece took up the entire tin. Not too much room for liquid. Bit saltier than smoked. When you chew more, you get more of the smoked flavour. No bones.
@@Christopher-b1p hey Chris!!! Glad to hear it was excellent!! Can’t wait to try the can I have!
@SardineExpedition One thing I noticed is that they contain Selenium. This is an element that we need a little of in our diet. It can also have a protective effect against heavy metals like mercury. For example, in the brain. Another food which contains selenium is Brazil nuts, but these can be radioactive.
Thank you.

They were so damn good!!! I’m already craving them again haha
Can you eat the round cans with the plastic lids past the expiration date? Thanks ❤
Hi Nancy! I wouldn’t recommend it personally. The ones I have with the plastic lids I always eat before the best by date just because the plastic doesn’t seem as reliable to stay completely sealed longer term. That’s just my personal opinion on it.

I agree about the film covered. The seal can't be as long lasting. Brislings are my favorite also. one of the reason I keep canned fish/meat is it's shelf life. I've eaten plenty of 6-10 year old sardines, clams, oysters and other meats.
BTW, have you every tried canned octopus or squid? They are great! Been a minute since I've been able to find them, but worth it. Thanks and carry on!

I’m excited to try them now!! I’ve got some cheap cans and then more expensive so it’ll be interesting to compare!
Why can't the seal be as long lasting? There may be other advantages to this method. Perhaps they are easier to retort.
This is based on my personal experience. 😎✌️

I just tried to look up what you’re describing and couldn’t find anything. Hopefully someone will know! I’m glad you found my channel! 😁

Producers vary in their approaches to best-buy dates on this relatively new packaging tech. For example, Brunswick has been slightly more conservative (2 years) than MW Polar (3 years). The two companies who developed the technology, though, say it’s good for five years, same as traditional canning.
