@Woogla hello, if you are holding the mantis captive in an aquarium or container, make sure she has access to shallow water. Something she wont drown in. A plastic lid upside down makes a good shallow container for water. Also, make sure there are a handful of twigs leaning up against the side of aquarium or container. She will use these to attach egg case to. When she does, it wont be til' May or June before the baby mantis' come out of case. Oh, feed the mother insects -crickets, moths, etc
It takes aboout 2 hours for them all to come out. There is an average of about 100 - 150 that come out. Only a few will reach to be an adult. The rest become food for other insects, spiders, lizards ....ect.
@AznSwagger117 Hello, The egg case in the video actually came from an oak tree in my back yard. I had trimmed the branches and, while putting the branches in the trash container, I found the egg case. I cut the section of the small branch and put it in a flower pot where it is shady. The case will hatch in May or June next year. The first thing the hatchlings will need is water. I used a tupperware lid upside down and put water in it because it is shallow....no drowning.
@AznSwagger117 In May, if you would like, purchase a small aquarium and put the case in there. They will eat very small insects. My uncle feeds his frogs a special breed of a small flying insects that dont fly. They almost look like small fruit flys. This makes it easier for the frog/mantis to catch and you dont have flying insects all over your house. I dont know of any bad reprocussions of having so many mantis' in a small area, please look into it. They might just kill each other.
Cool video. I found some in our backyard that must have been a few hours old. I posted a short video - hopefully they scatter without eating one another!
Ick did you have to mention daddy long legs spiders in the description? lol The praying mantis is pretty much the only bug which actually does not bother me. Plus, these guys even border on adorable.
I found a very pretty female praying mantis and I believe she may be expecting.... I would like to raise some on my own, what should I do to help her have a safe and calm delivery?
