Many years of working in the field, Baldwin is by far and large the most common filter on commercial engines. Most of the rental companies use them.
The coating on the spring is soap, they use it as a lubricant to make the spring coil easier.
Sorry Nate that Baldwin is a very fine filter. When I see rust in a new filter, that isn't very impressive to me, especially at how inconvenient it is to get, and thier always highest price!!!

I always enjoy your videos, thank you for that.
I believe you are inspecting an OLD Amsoil oil filter which they no longer make. Hence probably the rust in the canister and what looks like mold to me on the spring, due to it being old and probably moisture or condensation has come into play. Amsoil has discontinued the Super Duty oil filters and have gone with the EA-15K (15,000 Miles) or the EAO (25,0000 Mile) oil filters. I believe these are what you should be comparing other oil filters to, as these are Amsoil's new standards. The EAO filters have a wire backing on their media which prevents the media from collapsing so that they can go the distance of 25,000 miles (not that I would ever do that, I change my oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first).
I just thought I'd pass that information along, so that I may give my reason as to why I believe the Amsoil oil filter looked the way it did.

Perhaps there is a way to measure area of filter media? That would be good to know for a particular size of oil filters

That Amsoil Filter is not made anymore. They have been updated. New ones are painted black and have a silicon anti-drainback valve and different media.

Nate, would it be a good idea to Flush the engine and refill with new oil with a new filter and run for an oil change interval. Drain the oil and send a sample to the lab. and dissect the filter. Then do the same with the next filter (same sort of oil). You could test different oils as well. Thank you Nate.
Every Baldwin/Hastings filter I've ever seen had an anti-drainback valve. Not sure what vehicle these are for but something's not right here.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Something not right there. Every one of them has a drain back valve. Where did that come from ?
