    I'd love to see a Drama vs Reality on Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace. I don't know why but I just love that drama. Its so under-rated and gets darker and so bleak in a way I don't think many dramas do and its kinda refreshing in that it isn't some happy ending unrealistic nonsense. Also, the 'reality' part is all the more interesting not because of what we do know historically, but what we DON'T. So much is just wiped from history.

    • @lindsiria
      @lindsiria 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This. It's one of the reasons I couldn't get into Ruyi as I couldn't believe the premise of it. There is no evidence (that I found) that the Emperor ever loved Ruyi. She was a duty, nothing more. I would have much rather had a story where Ruyi loved the Emperor but he never loved her. Tragedy all around.

    • @Ginizhu
      @Ginizhu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@lindsiria but he didn't love her the way she did in the slightest, I actually think it's pretty accurate tbh they must have known each other as kids given her aunt was the empress and he had to have been fond of her to have promoted her so many times with no kids at that time. Heck even their honeymoon was longer than his first one. Qianlong seemed like a strange guy tho

    • @quynhdao2512

      @@lindsiria I think any man in ancient Chinese, much less a powerful one such as an emperor, would take any affection or admiration they have for a woman as a sign of love. “You are beautiful, I love you”, “You dance so well, I love you”,… because in their mind, ‘their love’ do not need to be eternal, faithful or even exclusive. They can love many women at the same time, and they can love for any length of time that suits them. Their love may last for years for one person, but may be just few months for another.

    • @satyasyasatyasya5746
      @satyasyasatyasya5746 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@lindsiria In the show or reality? Well, in reality of course most marriages are for power and alliances. Almost no leaders ever loved eachother.
      As for the show, I think the premise that she loves him, and he loves her, but he stops respecting her and seeing her as a person and her love for him slowly dying, is actually very powerful to watch. They simply become different people, and I'd say she stops loving him, or at least has serious doubts, quite quickly.

    • @satyasyasatyasya5746
      @satyasyasatyasya5746 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Ginizhu Something was going on to have Qianlong (irl) wipe her from history. However, I love that the show actually has Ruyi *take herself back* from history since she never wanted any of it to begin with. You can see this when she cuts herself out of the painting as if to say "i don't belong to you anymore"
      When the Emperor (in the show) gives the order to wipe Ruyi from history, I almost feel like he's finally listening to her, and giving her what she wants. Because as she says in the show, he only ever cares AFTER he's lost someone.

    Thanks for 13th & Yongzhen's story. Their brotherly love is really appreciable, and indeed rarity for royal siblings. And I strangely love the fact that both are workaholic.

    • @shalinitiwariscorner5210
      @shalinitiwariscorner5210 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not quite ' brotherly ' according to Western understanding. You know even a girlfriend uses the word ' Ge Ge' for his boyfriend until they get married. In many BL manhwa, you can see the supposed lovers calling each other ' Hyung ' but it doesn't mean that they consider each other as ' brothers' in Western sense.

    • @yny13xx
      @yny13xx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@shalinitiwariscorner5210 Calling someone " Ge" is not about romance. Well, this is not BL universe; it's thecworld of chinese cultural sphere. In collective societies like Chinese, we relate ourselves to people around us to create sense of kinship (and thus it will be easier to depend on/ask helps from one another). "Ge" itself means brother. We call our blood brother "Ge." So, we also call elder males whose ages are not so different from the speakers "brother" to bond w/ them. Like I address my neighbor's gay son "brother" even he's not my blood brother, a relative, nor a love interest.
      In western standard, this guy is either my neighbor or childhood friend. But in my society, I'll be called rude and haughty if I don't respectfully call him "brother" according to his seniority and his biological sex - not his preferred sexuality.
      Of course, if he ever wanted me to call him sister, I'd oblige. But he never says so and seems very fine with being called "brother" because it connotes that I, a junior, give him proper respect. It's just collective-society cultural thing. Romance is not the main issue; but the due respect and etiquette.

    13 devoted his entire life to serve his brother number 4.
    The 4 also was a great giver person who gave rewards or even more rewards and high praises to individuals who he believed doing great for the country. I believe he was a good minded and kindness individual too. He was one of the greatest achievable emperor of China as well as his 13 half brother one of the greatest price of Qing dynasty.

      According to historical documents, Qing emperors' family lives are a lot more "business" like, almost void of scandals shown in these dramas. Early Qing rulers adopted a lot of their traditional marriage customs which are quite shocking for common Han population. To faithfully depict court affairs would not appeal to most us contemporaries.
      Having said that, I am more inclined to believe she was a strong woman who was not afraid to confront her husband in their family affairs like getting another mistress/wife etc., and Qianlong's ego would not tolerate such moral/authoritative lectures.

    • @sigyul2283

      @@flysmask I can only speculate two things that can push a woman to such extreme act like cutting her hair, she got humiliated or her sons got punished, since we know the second one is not true, it's very likely the first case. It is rumored that she scolded the emperor not to accept a Han mistress, as it's against the imperial court tradition, which the emperor did not appreciate. Being a strong woman, I could imagine she argued with him forcefully, resulting in a shocking act to show her indignation.

    I love this new series. Not only it gives the audience the reality of the situation but also provides information about other cultures which for me, am unaware of. I like your drama reviews but I am interested in these extra informational videos more as they are timeless.
    I want to know if drinking to show respect or give face is dramatized or realistic. Be it period drama or modern or fantasy, there are often some scenes where one person drinks to the other to gain favours or if needed some help. In some dramas sometimes people are forced to drink to show that they are respecting the person in higher position. In some culture, toasting is a thing show respect or share your happiness or concern. But in c-dramas, how is harming or disrespecting the inferior one to drink can gain the superior one respect for him/herself? So how real is this in real life? Or is it overdramatized?

    I vividly remember watching 步步惊心 in 1 sitting (who needs sleep when a drama can make you laugh and cry til your stomach and cheeks hurt), how can it be more than a decade ago.

    For Westerners, who might misunderstand the word ' brother', here is an important information-
    In China, the word used for both brother and boyfriend is ' gege '. if a girl ( in this case guy) calls you “gege ”,it represents that your relationship is much closed . “gege ” (哥哥)is a very intimate salutation, a character that if is not used for her brother then is for boyfriend! It’s different from “ge ”(哥), which absolutely means you were friendzoned.

    What a great idea! Yes, please do continue this - I do find myself going down the Wikipedia rabbit hole to look up historical figures vs drama depictions but you'll never find this kind of insight without a deep dive into history.
    That said, it's also too bad that Chinese dramaland isn't more imaginative and forward thinking in how it chooses to depict historical subject matters because an epic bromance, rather than endless concubine back-stabbery, could be so good to watch. And I don't mean a meaty war-drama that has NO romance, I mean, a stronger element of familial dynamics that exactly describe what you said - the humanity behind the ruthless politics. I'd watch the hell out of that.

    As period costume drama watcher, I want Avenuex to talk about Qianlong too. Its very well known also. From My Fair Princess, Ruyi and Story of Yanxi Palace.
    For Qin Dynasty, you can talk about the controversial emperor, Qin Shi Huang. There is some fictions and historical facts around QSH life.
    Ming Dynasty, as usual, Zhu Di, Zhu Zhan Ji era is the most interesting part in Ming. And many dramas adapted the era including Ming Dynasty, The Imperial Doctress, Royal Feast and The Imperial Age.
    For Tang Dynasty, Wu Ze Tian and her husbands era are also very insteresting.

    OMG. This video is so great because Im actually doing a research paper this summer on The Story of Yanxi Palace’s historical accuracy. Specifically the Imperial Consorts storylines! Im a History minor in University and ive been taking classes on ancient china, your channel & my love for historical Chinese dramas led me to this! So I would love to see your take on Qianlong’s court & Yanxi!

    Thank you so much for your insight about Chinese history.
    I've liked a lot Cdrama since I was young. However, historical Cdrama cant be confusing for non Chinese. Also when we dont know exactly about the Chinese literature and history. Plus we cant find them easily.
    So, your videos really help us to get more understanding over Chinese culture.

    Wow! Thank you for this information :) It is indeed rare to see this kind of brother bond in an era where you expect them to fight for the throne to the point of killing each other....

    Thank you for starting this series! Can you talk about the topic of 大家闺秀/ 出身名门?There are lots of female characters in dramas nowadays that are supposed to be from that background but sort of act nothing like it.... They sometimes lack basic manners even. Would love to know what 古代’s proper 大小姐 upbringing is like. Thank you!

    Loooove this new video you're launching!!!!! It's so fabulous and interesting!!!!
    I would love to know what the deal is with Qian Long's mother. They always say she's not his real mother in the series but Wikipedia suggests that she is.
    I want to know if she's his real mother or not and why the series almost always say she's not his real mother. It's very strange!
    Also pleeeeeease examine who Qian Long loved best and what his deal was with the Step Empress. Surely some stuff must have gone down between them for him to wipe her and also for him to be so angry. I can understand the poor women of that era being forgotten or ignored but it seems super weird that he especially hated her.

    This is brilliant! Thank you so much, your narration of history was amazing. I have always found real history much more fascinating than fabricated stories. Wouldn't it be great to see the real story as a movie? I don't know whether they had a romantic relationship, or a non-sexual soulmate kind, but I find that China has categorically denied it's much older history of high-court same-sex romances, some of which are amazingly and wonderfully romantic and passionate. The acceptance of the Passion of the Cut Sleeve, apparently, died after the close of the Tang Dynasty. I highly doubt (given the reaction to WoH's Zhao Zhang) we will see any of these wonderful stories come out of China in the near future. I look forward to your next episode in this series.
