    I agree that Peng Xiaoran & Chen Xingxu made this work otherwise it would have been one big mess just like majority of historical dramas out there. It's too bad that they haven't been given good projects after Goodbye, My Princess. Also, I would love to see Peng Xiaoran with Zheng Yecheng on screen in another well produced historical drama. I think they would look good together.

      Agree! The amazing acting of PX and CX compliments each other. The production value is highly well done, especially cinematography and costume. I love your suggestion to have PX and ZY collaboration. They will have great chemistry together.

    I loved both leads in this drama...outstanding performances. I saw a BTS of the ML after shooting a scene and he was crying, completely hunched down and kept repeating how he couldn't get over it, while the FL and crew comforted him -- they were so present in their roles and I appreciate that. Some of the palace interior shots were slightly off-putting and looked a little like a 1960's resort lounge (Eastern Palace especially). Fantastic though and will remain one of my favorites. I just want to add that it may have been intentional to make her look out of place in her costuming -- costumes are part of the story and she just didn't belong there...it wasn't in her heart and it showed.

    omg omg, finally the review I've been waiting for! I absolutely loved 东宫, the ost, the characters, the cp, the (tragic) story, everything, absolutely everything. I absolutely loved the setting and how the story was tragic from the start to the end. The story is solid, unlike the cheap productions these days!! (◍•ᴗ•◍)♡

  • @usagi77777772003
    @usagi77777772003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    This is one drama that will haunt me for the ages mainly because of our two leads' intense/doomed relationship! It's so sad that circumstances made it impossible for our lovers to be together. XF's (FL) inability to forgive/accept LCY (ML) mainly stems from HER involvement in the whole massacre of her maternal tribe. However you spin it, she was the key to Danchi being conquered and who were the ones who set her up? LCY and GJ (2nd ML). And she blames LCY more because he deceived her affections (betrayal is more raw when it's committed by the person you love) and from her perspective, the way he used her to wipe out her clan members was utterly underhanded and despicable.
    If LCY had found some other way to defeat XF's maternal clan without getting her involved, then she would have been able to forgive/accept him. Before her memories came back, she'd already come to terms with falling in love with the man who killed her grandfather and conquered her maternal clan. But it was the memories of her involvement in LCY/GJ's plans that doomed their relationship and made her go all crazy. She cannot and will not accept falling TWICE for the man who got her to indirectly kill her family members. In her mind, even if it was unintentional, she had a hand in the annihilation of her tribe and it was all because of her feelings for LCY. She ultimately couldn't live with that fact. And I can't say I blame her. The moment she regained her memories, it was game over for our couple.
    Sigh...I love both characters and understood their plight because neither of them is morally right or wrong: They're just on different sides. The only reason people hate on LCY is because of how lovable XF and her maternal clan were and it crushed everyone to see their beloved characters destroyed. I also got very attached and almost couldn't watch their demise because it was so painful. But I also recognize that all's fair in love and war and it was Danchi's own fault for trusting an outsider like LCY. They would have done the same thing to LCY's country if given the opportunity. In war, both sides will stop at nothing to one up the other and will be on the lookout for any openings. LCY's side simply saw one first and took it. It was just too bad that XF had to be caught in the middle and LYC from the other side fell for the pawn in his plans. My heart weeps...
    Overall, circumstances made it impossible for our lovers to be together and yet, I couldn't help but root for them anyway because of my love for both characters and their incredible chemistry . The only way they could have been together is if LCY regained his memories first and took measures to ensure XF's memories stayed locked up forever. He'd probably keep feeding her water from the river of forgetfulness. Ultimately, that would be the better fate for our XF as she'd be with the man she loves without all the pain/guilt.

    GBMP has become a classic to me! It's one of those dramas that managed to make me hit the next episode while sobbing in pain (Scarlet Heart is another one!). It's definitely one of the best Chinese adaptations I've watched, and they really did the justice to the original novel. The production quality is amazing, other than the things you mentioned, I also love the unique soundtracks which bring so much nuance and emotions to the story. As a fan of the original novel back in the 2010s, I was so happy when they reused the song 爱殇 ("Love Catastrophes") originally by 董贞, which was considered by fans THE theme song of the tragic love in Dong Gong. The amount of love and care the production team had for the GBMP is much appreciated!

    it’s actually interesting you wanted the drama to be shorter overall because everyone was complaining that the xizhou part was too short and should have been fleshed out more (which happened in the directors cut)
    also, the directors cut which i presume was the version you watched had a very different lighting compared to the standard. I definitely feel that the standard one had a better contrast and tone to it + the music was chosen better. But in terms of scenes, I would still go with the directors cut.

    I’ve been waiting for this review! Dong gong is literally my favorite tragedy drama, the execution by the main actors are brilliant! The emotional pull and value was amazing. I’ve never feel so hurt like when I watch this drama and not to mention the ost is soooo gooodd it’s hitting my heart at every note. I’m so glad you also hate gu jian he was literally a sad boi that keep blaming li chengyin for everything like??? You were in it too don’t act like you’re the victim tf??? I’ve watched this when it was ongoing and the emotional torture while waiting TT TT it was all worth it tho the way it end is just so fitting cause we all knew there is no good end with those 2 and it end the way we expected but it still hurts like crazy cause you want them to be happy, overall this drama is just pure tragedy gold that I will keep re watching. No drama after this one gave me the same emotional impact these days there are so many boring dramas…

    I let out a little squeal when I saw you reviewed this. I absolutely love this drama! I love the themes, the conflicting emotions I have for the ML, the sadness, and depth of love it portrays (even if it's hopeless in their lifetime). Must have watched it at least four times now and have watched the clips of my favorite scenes every week. The acting and directing are just top-notch. I admit that my favorite scenes are their cute and bickering moments, but even the tragic ones bear rewatching, especially that brutal moment atop the tower/garrison/whatever it is where the ML, out of jealousy, forces the FL to watch a brutal act and sees her completely broken down but tells her it is better that she hate him than disregard him completely. Heart shattering from a plot standpoint but mesmerizing to see their acting talents.

    I watched Goodbye my Princess last year and I loved it so much. Yes, it's long, yes, they could cut some plots, but overall I enjoyed almost all of it. I cryed so much and I was devastated at the end, even though it was obvious it wouldn't end well after the grandfather scene.
    I'm glad you made a review about it. I confess I'd wanted to know your opinion since I've watched it.

    BEST COSTUME DRAMA EVER! I love it to bits! Chen Xingxu and Peng Xiaoran's acting is just so brilliant, I'm at a loss for words. No drama so far has had such an emotional impact on me. And even though I might be alone in saying this, I also loved the second male lead and his acting. I cried so hard when he died...
    But the most outstanding actor is still Chen Xingxu, he is a genius! ❤
    Like you said, I still rewatch some of the light, romantic scenes from time to time. But the best scene in the whole drama, though hard to bear, is when Xiaofeng realizes it was her lover who beheaded her grandfather. Supergood acting!!
    Thank you for doing this review, I was so excited when I saw you had actually made a video about my all time favourite drama!
    Lots of love from Germany!

    The director doesn't have enough ability to control the pace of the whole drama though he's good at photographing to make the scene look beautiful. We can see this both in Si teng and Donggong. After all, photographing is not amount to directing, right ?

    Also because of the dearth of good dramas, I finally watched "Rebel Princess," aka "Monarch Industry." Another summer-long drama that's a vanity project for a 40 something actress playing a character at least 20 years younger than she was. In one scene, she's wearing a lavish gown while tending wounded soldiers. Haiyaa. But I could see where the money was spent. Also finally watched "The Long Ballad." The best scene was when Zhao Lusi's no longer timid princess character slapped her body guard so hard, I jumped. And Richards Wang's guest appearance as the young, arrogant monarch of a desert kingdom cracked me up. Overall, not great, but not bad.

    I always love your explanations and BTS info. I didn't watch Goodbye, My Princess, but have seen enough mvs and clips to understand the plot. I really like the CP, but at 55 episodes, I don't have the time, even with the FF button. Plus extreme tragedy is too much for my emotions these days. I did watch the special episodes of the CP in modern time and really enjoyed them. Thank you for another great video.

    Love that you reviewed an older drama! When good new dramas are scarce, I'd enjoy a recap of an older one.
    It's tough watching a "romance" where two guys compete to be The Worst. Not romantic at all. I think, for me to enjoy tragedy, I need to want to see them together in the first place.

    I just finished watching this one a few weeks ago! I also didn't have a new drama I wanted to watch, and this one happens to be one that has "Learn Mode" on Viki (where you can click on the Chinese subtitles and get translation/pronunciation). So I watched it there (shorter/original version).
    Agree with most of your review, except through most of the drama I was preferring the 2nd ML to the 1st. I thought after she lost her memory, he was regretting his behavior and turned into a better person, but then towards the end when he kidnapped her against her will, I was like nah, both of these guys suck.
    I also didn't understand why in the beginning the 2ML introduced her to 1ML, but then tried to be the hero and rescue her from him. Like, YOU participated in this whole thing, now suddenly you wanna save her? Sigh. Men. 😆

    • @moonmissy
      @moonmissy ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the 2nd ML betrayal is much worse than the 1st ML betrayal. He grew up with her, had long history of trusting relationship, was her teacher and she loved him first, yet he delivered her right into the hands of a man who he knew would use her, kill her family and hurt her. The 1st ML only knew her a short time. He didn't expect to fall in love with the woman he planned to use and deceive. He was compelled by revenge, survival and his position to do what he did, he couldn't turn back. The 2nd ML had a choice to give up revenge and not hurt her. I found it disgusting, his betrayal.

    Omg I was so surprised to see this video! I recently caught up on Dong Gong as well, 3 years late, thanks to the lull in dramaland. I also watched the 55 episode version and I must say wow, I’m SO GLAD I FINALLY DID.
    This drama is absolutely gorgeous and left such a huge hole in my heart (in a good way) I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. Unpopular opinion: I loved LCY as a character, I cried more for him than XF at the end. No, he was not a good person. But I felt for him and understood what pushed him to do certain things, plus CXX did a spectacular job to bring out all the layers and nuances of such a complex, tragic character. This drama hurt so much at the end I’m still terrified to go listen to the OST because I might start crying. So yes, it was by no means perfect. But in terms of leaving an impression and being unforgettable? 10/10
    Bonus: can we talk about the costuming and sets?? Some of the best I’ve seen 👌

    YEEES, super late reviews! Hope this is the start of a new series of visiting older dramas, even including ones way older than this! Because it isn't just the new stuff that are enjoyable and rant worthy, but there's so much out there to sift through so getting a current perspective (with current ideology and drama-watching experience/expectations, and away from the exaggerating hype trains) on older works is interesting.
    I very much enjoyed this drama. So melodramatic and yet somehow addictive... All but one of your thoughts (the one about the colour grading - I didn't really pay much attention to this when I watched it live) were things I've touched on when talking to other people too.

    This drama will forever remain special to me. Even now, after countless rewatch, I feel emotional when I come across either its OST or any scene. Concerning your review, I do not really agree with you about cutting the serial to only 24 episodes and especially cutting down the first part because this is where the entire drama is the most beautiful in terms of the scenery, cinematography, acting (especially of Xiao Feng) and the sheer violence of ensuing scenes that led to the dramatic plunge into the river... I mean...if there is a need to cut down, it is when she is abducted by SML, supposedly to be brought back to Xi Zhou and where she mistakes him as Gu Xiao Wu...I think that the politics part was necessary but a bit too complicated with bad translation... but it did provide understanding of why Li Chen Yin was so calculating and manipulative. I do agree though that the SML was the person I hated the most ... how could he have betrayed and then stalk her as a sort of repentance and even in impersonating Gu Xiao Wu...ahhh...hate him. But all in all, this drama will forever remain amongst my favorite ever.

Everytime I rewatch this drama, I find things about the drama that I didn't see before. Besides the ML and FL, I also love the SL (Gu Jian). I understand it was kind of annoying that he was just getting drunk in the middle of the drama but then again it does make sense for his character because he regrets his actions that caused him to lose everything. Thank you for your review! I'm going to watch this drama again because there's nothing good playing right now.

The ending wise, they close it well considering the whole plot will be controversial if ML & FL ended up together. Everyone might hate ML to the bones but you also have to take a step back and take a look at the environment he was in too. It’s all covered in blood. It’s either you die or other people die all the time.

    SPOILER..This is the first drama i watched and LOVED where I was not a fan of the male or female leads, neither did I follow them up after this drama.Its just extremely well written, acted and directed.
    Absolutely unforgettable!! the hopelessness , the doomed love story and still you keep rooting for them.Also the first and only drama where I felt the FL death was logical and justified.

    First thing’s first, I LOVE the drama (it’s one of the few that I have actively chased in real time while it was still airing in several years), and especially the choice of the two leads. While I agree that the plot could have shortened, I personally would not shorten it that much.
    I have no problems with the way the drama chose to present the story, especially compared to the original novel. I do feel that the drama focuses too much of the male lead’s character on revenge for his birth family. This always made me feel that his change in character was awkward. He went from a naive, innocent prince to suddenly shrewd and calculating, a change that felt a bit sudden. I much prefer his personality in the novel where he had always been calculating. It makes the description of his young self in the drama “ the fifth prince that always seemed to be troubled/have a lot on his mind” (by his concubine) that much more appropriate. It also makes the fact that he fell in love with the female lead that much more genuine and thus heart-breaking. To him, the female lead genuinely is a ray of light in his dark world.
    I definitely think that the fight for the position of crown prince plot is unnecessary, though I did enjoy it bcz of the two princesses interactions with Xiao Feng. This plot, and I feel several other plot points, diminishes the love that the emperor felt for the Male Lead and especially his birth mother, though it better portrays the concept that familial love is especially difficult between fathers and sons of the imperial family.
    I unfortunately was not a fan of the ending for the male lead where he grew old childless and passed the throne on to his nephew. I much prefer the ending shown in the side/bonus story/ epilogue that the author provided in the novel. That plot, IMO, further shows the love the male lead had for the female lead (this is kinda the same feeling I had for the ending of RuYi’s love in the Palace drama where I prefer the novel’s ending just cause it allowed me to feel more genuinely the guilt of the male lead)
    P.S.
    I totally agree with what was said about the 2nd male lead. He had too much screen time for no reason. I would cut most of his background explaining and drunken scenes out.

      Can I ask what the bonus/side story ending was?

    • @amyzheng5280
      @amyzheng5280 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@snoozleblob 20-ish years after Xiao Feng’s passing, and from the POV of Pei Zhao’s Son, he describes how great of an emperor Li Chengyin became in terms of internal politics and expansion of the empire. He expanded the empire far beyond the old borders but left Xi Liang (Xiao Feng’s home country) alone in the midst of all this expansion as an independent country. He even accepted the rudeness of the country’s king under multiple occasions, which people find odd. In the eyes of most ppl, including the narrator, they know this is due to the female lead, but are under the impression that Li ChengYin hated Xiao Feng (like, a lot) bcz he wasn’t willing to honor her posthumously until much later (at the officials’ constant badgering) and never really talked about her. The narrator also noted how weird his personality was in the eyes of others, where he never liked things in pairs, among other things. The male lead only ever had two children (after much hustling by court officials who constantly reminded him that he needed to have more children), a son and a daughter, the latter of which he loved to no end. This princess was the only one who could calm him when he was angry, etc. By the time of this telling, however, that daughter had passed away and the narrator describes how utterly inconsolable the emperor (male lead) has become and how he was wasting away (whitening of hair in one night, no energy, etc.). Pei Zhao was asked to enter the Palace and try to console the male lead and from their conversation, we find out that the Li Chengyin is still in deep denial over the Xiao Feng’s death and that he had treated his daughter by a concubine as her daughter, which is why he adored that child so much. However, in the end, he had to accept Xiao Feng’s death and the narrator notes that, for the first time ever, he sees Li ChengYin cry like a baby while tightly holding onto Pei Zhao.

    I came across this review by accident in 2023 so after I already watched "Goodbye My Princess" twice. I agree with you on too many side plots and dislike of the second ML but the ML and FL were the main reason for me keeping on wanting to watch the drama again. I probably will watch it the third time in the future. The scenes stay with me the most are the ones that ML plots to make FL falling for him so he can get to her grandfather. Those Xizhou scenes are so beautiful and ML and FL both look so spirit free and innocent. ML has a very innocent youthful handsome face but with a calculating and ambitious heart. Remember the scene he marries her in his traditional ceremony fashion under the moonlight (if I remember correctly); it is beautiful and only two of them there. He looks innocent, sincere as if he really means it, maybe he does. I love this drama even though it is so long! After watching it twice, I read the novel online to get inside of the ML's mind because he is so calculated with everyone around him, including the 2nd FL, his wife(?) ...

    FINALLY!!! Thank you for this review - i loved this drama esp the Xinjiang location scenes. I’ve spent 20 days on a Silk Road tour and I must say, the authenticity of the desert 🐪 scenes were magnificent - esp in around Dunhuang which was truly magical. And this is the ONLY Chinese drama that I cried over - I only cry watching K dramas becos the Korean scripts had a lot more depth while too many Chinese dramas were superficial in their plots / scripts. Lastly- I love the OST , that the production team took care to also record a version in the native tribal language, that I really appreciated. Thanks again for the review 💜

    But….I have to admit, I skipped the first couple of episodes just to see the two together after their cliff jumping…when they forgot 😂. I have gotten used to cdramas being notoriously long. I totally agree that if most would just cut the side stories and nonsense that doesn’t affect the main couple, it would make for a more concise and pleasing storyline 👍

    The Xizhou scenes are just the episodes I watch nowadays bc of the cute setup and the potential that it promised. Once they got to the middle kingdom they tried to be so clever with the politics that I just wanted to skip everything to get to the main couple. But even then all the potential unravelled in a bad narrative way. They kept going in circles that LCY & XF where he pretends to be mean to her and she is oblivious. Although the most brilliant thing the production team did was create the special mini-series of the main couple in modern time and it parallels everything in the series. It was super cute and I would love to see their "3rd life" explored in modern time.

    This drama is one of th most utterly wrong dramas I have ever seen. Literally all the major female characters kill themselves so that the can escape abuse by men. This is in no way shape or form a plot divice that should be respresented as admirable. Especially A'Wu's death that actually has no point at all. I really liked the dynamic between Xiao Feng and Gu Xiao Wu, however cruelty against woman "for their own good" is also something which should not be romanticised. I loved the OST but that was about it.

    • @saqweq
      @saqweq ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol. It’s a fictional show, not real life. Most people halfway intelligent know it’s fiction and won’t romanticize it. Fiction is meant to be entertaining and interesting-doesn’t matter how abhorrent the characters or relationships are. By your logic half of Western tv shows need to be trashed because the protagonists are always shitty people who abuse their relationships. Who cares? Being an interesting, well-rounded character is much more important than being morally good. If some people are too stupid to separate reality and fiction they need to stick to watching the Disney Channel, where everyone is a boring Mary Sue with zero personality.

    Dear Avenuex, your review on this drama is super SPOT-ON that I would gladly give it a 3 gold mine score! I can totally resonates with all you've said!
    The acting of the 2 leads are really good and YES! Chen Xingxu really hit the jackpot with this role. The complexity of Li Chengyin's character (the 5th prince/crown prince) is a dream role for actors. Fortunately the actor CXX has done very good justice to this character. The character built up, the intensity, the maniaca possessiveness for XiaoFeng and the love/hate he invoke from all around him, making it one of the best drama character ever written! Else I'll never made it through 55 episodes.
    On the other extreme end, like what Avenuex has said, 2nd male lead is really poorly written - a whinning loser through and through. His act and lies done allegedly in his noble love for the Princess is a real sham. I'm not sorry to confess I hit the high speed play for his screen time.
    I literally laughed out loud on the observation on XiaoFeng's outlook between the XiZhou and ZhongYuan era - totally hit the nail. Because I also can't shake off the puzzling thought on how she looks so brilliantly good earlier but became so plain and dull later. The slender body build in XiZhou costume became not that well- proportioned in ZhongYuan outfit (both neck and upper body became so much shorter). Yep, only plausible explanation is "ZhongYuan looks may not suit everybody"!
    Thanks for this wonderful spot on review!
