I don't even have knee pain, but for my own foot issues, in particular diagnosed neuromas, heal spurs and non- diagnosed, I think plantar's facitis/cious, this video was VERY helpful ! I listen to all Dr. Ray's video , and so far, I have learned more info than ANY other podiatrist EVER told me !!!. the stretching videos ones are EXTRA helpful !! blessed to have found this site !! although still not 100%, I swear my feet haven't felt this " healed" in years !! Dr. Ray should get some type of Nobel Peace Prize for Podiatry.. :) !! he's the only foot doctor who has actually helped me and I haven't even seen him person !!! now that is remarkable !!!!

Thank you for your comments, +Tim Lewis, +Cory Pchajek, and +Darren Clark. Very interesting discussion. There are just a couple of points we’d like to add in here:
Running form and lower extremity strengthening are certainly important, and personalized coaching can be extremely beneficial. However, in our experience, technique adjustments are unlikely to be successful as long as the foot is held in a disadvantageous (and deformed) position by footwear. If I were to go for a run in stiletto heels, attempting to use the best possible technique, I’d be hard pressed to overcome the obstacle of my foot position. It’s a similar situation with conventional shoes (including running shoes), which hold the foot in the same position as high heels (i.e., the heel is elevated and the toes are extended above the support surface and squeezed together)-to a lesser extent obviously, but still in a disadvantageous position. This is particularly significant when you consider the impact of many, many running footfalls. Healthy running form is far more easily and beneficially implemented when the feet are in a biomechanically advantageous position; that is, with the heel and toes on a level surface and the toes splayed.
Please check out our Literature & Press Page. There are articles by Dr. William Rossi, who wrote extensively about the damage that footwear can cause because of the way it positions the foot, as well as a varied list of articles and studies that address topics such as gait, footwear, foot ailments, and injuries.

Oh my goodness Dr. McClanahan, where have you been all my life? How I wish I had come upon your videos sooner!! I have been running for decades and now in my late forties suffering from multiple chronic injuries-knee, hip and recently splayed second and third toes!. I've bought correct toes and altra running shoes. Though even altra shoe liners seem a tiny bit too small when wearing correct toes, I'm going to give your approach a try. It makes perfect sense

As a basketball player, we stay on our forefoot most of the time when we play to achieve quickness. Is that going to contribute to knee problems like how you described in the video?

+Andy Huang It is possible that you could have similar issues as a basketball player because basketball shoes have similar features of running shoes -- tapered toebox, heel elevation, and toe spring.
