  • Dr. Ray McClanahan discusses traditional vs. natural shoe sizing techniques. The most conventional and popular way of obtaining your shoe size has been the Brannock Device®. Dr. Ray demonstrates how to use the Brannock Device and explains why it’s not the best tool for obtaining your shoe size. He also introduces a better way to size your feet with the Shoe Liner Test ™.

    Interesting to see the Brannock device. These used to be in all shoe store when I was a child in the 1970s and always fitted standing up. But in my teen years the shoe salespeople started measuring sitting down. But they could never give me shoes I could wear. I was always being told to ,"stretch" the shoes. Consequently I developed bunions from badly fitting shoes, and started making my own judgement on fit. I'm looking forward to getting barefoot shoes now.

    As a schoolboy I saw old shoes and old shoe replicas of the American colonial era and was stunned. They looked like baby shoes in their shape and design. I recall staring and wondering why. When I asked my teachers I never got a real answer other than that was how they made shoes hundreds of years ago.

      I second that! I transitioned to more minimalist shoes way to soon, like Vibram Five fingers, and developed metatarsalgia, and it had been a year of relapses etc, even wearing highly cushioned structured shoes, I was wondering, what's going on??? Figuring out that my little toe had been squished by wearing tight fit Basketball shoes and traditional running shoes and my big toe pointed inwards slightly and hearing about the tripod concept in barefoot lifting (squats and deadlifts), my feet were weak and literally out of shape. Been wearing them for a month, it's been amazing, because I can walk barefoot with them at home (laminate floor) with out pain and also wear minimalist shoes like vivobarefoot shoes out and about with no pain, just when it gets tired I get a niggle but that's it compared to before, it's hardly anything!

    I use the sockliner test & press the insole to the foot & look in a mirror held towards the bottom or under the foot. If you see the foot, the shoe is too narrow. I find the new Zoom Flys/VaporFlys quite wide in the forefoot but redundant upper. I think they made the last for African runners' feet, who obviously were barefoot most of their lives, hence the wider shoe.

    OK, this was an education. I can see why so many people have issues with aching feet. I appreciate the info and also the list of shoes on the recommended list. There are plenty of casual options on the list. However, not so many for dress wear and so my question is... If we have to buy a pair of dressier Oxford, Black Cap etc shoes which are really built around the "brannock" way of measuring, what are our best options? Go 1/2 size wider than the measurement we get on the brannock device? Go longer and wider?

    • @correcttoes
      @correcttoes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, thanks for watching the video :) We completely agree- there is a need for more foot healthy dress shoe options! If you're not finding a suitable, fully foot-healthy option from the shoe lists on our website, we recommend looking for shoes that are flat from heel to toe, flexible, and widest at the tips of the toes (which can certainly be difficult to find within the dress shoe category). We are always happy to give feedback if there's a particular shoe you're interested in, too.

    Help with Basketball shoes!?!?! I'm just conceding for now, since there isn't anything out there that emulates a real foot shape basketball shoe that I just have to go a size and a half up? I'm normally a 10.5 in Altra shoe (thank God they exist 😂) and I figured that I have to go up to 12 in under armour and Adidas, this to accommodate my feets width and also when the shoe starts to tapper (ie trying to align my toes with it also most bball shoes seem to have an extra shoelace hole now like may running shoes so I can get a bit of a lockdown). There is a lot of dead space at the front but I figure since the rest of the feet is secured down it won't matter as much? What are your thoughts?

    Great video makes sense. I’m trying to get sized for work boots. Current size I have left foot fits comfortably snug but right foot seems a bit too snug. Did the sock liner test and left foot seems perfect but right foot spilling over a bit. I did try the next size up but way too big. Tried the next size up in a narrower width still too much. Then I ended up with current size.
    Like I said left foot is very comfortable but right foot isn’t. There’s a 30 day west guarantee from Red Wing and I’m coming up on the 30 days in 5 days. I’ve been wearing them daily to break them in. After wearing them for a couple of hours I’m not happy with the fit on the right foot. Seems like my toes are more compressed than the left foot.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

    • @correcttoes
      @correcttoes  ปีที่แล้ว

      You might benefit from removing the liners out completely. This will give you 1-2mm of room within the shoe. This may be all the room you need. If this is still not helpful I do recommend checking out alternative brands. From the looks of it, the brand Red Wing does not fit the shape and width recommendations. They tapper and are narrow at the toes than at the ball of the foot. Check out brands such as Lems, Altra, Vivobarefoot, Birkenstock, and/or our Instagram/Facebook page for more recommendations and shoe reviews.

    I've looked at over a dozen brands that support natural foot shapes. Not a single one of them makes shoes for people with extra wide feet. And almost none even make wide width shoes. Growing up I often bought shoes 1.5 sizes to big just to get enough width to not squish the base of my pinky toe. Even then they still tapered my toes from their natural separation. And that stupid Brannock device kept saying my feet were regular width. Not a shoe on the planet I can wear Correct Toes with unless I buy clown shoes. Thanx fer nothin shoe industry.

    Could you please address why you measured while wearing toe separators? It seems wearing them would give you a significantly wider measurement than how your toes would sit naturally in shoes without them. Unless you where toe separators in your shoes everyday, it seems to not be a real life measurement. Please help me understand! I came across your video while researching how to measure using the brannock device. I have a wider than average toe box and longer than average toes. Lasts used to make mass produce roller skates don't fit the profile of my feet so I'm getting a couple pairs custom made. After viewing this I checked and yes width at toe tips (without toe separators) is slightly wider than my ball of foot width. May make for an odd looking roller skate boot!

    • @correcttoes

      A foot with Correct Toes on represents the way a natural foot should look. This is how feet would look if people didn't wear narrow shoes with tapered toe boxes for decades that squeezed their toes in narrower than the ball of the foot. A baby's foot is widest at the tips of the toes and only changes shape after wearing conventional footwear for many years. It may look funny, but flat and flexible footwear widest at the tips of the toes allows your feet to be stable, strong, and functional.

    • @jacobkowski7705
      @jacobkowski7705 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. Unfortunately now my foot is widest at the ball, not at the toe. If I wear shoes according to the width from the Correct Toes, then my toes will have a huge empty space in the toe box unless I wear the Correct Toes every day. Do you suggest I wear the toe spacers every day??? 😅

    I have had big feet since being a child and always had to squeeze my feet into girls shoes. By the age 15 I wore male runners as female shoes did not go to my size. This is still the case 35 yrs on from then and I have hammer toes forming and even have bunions on both feet. Considering surgery until I have seen this and other videos you have showing exercises, which I will commence immediately. On a recent trip to CA (I am from in Australia) I bought a pair of Altaro (mens, as no women's in my size) Size 10 (I would go up to 10.5 in my next pair). They are the best thing! The only problem is that I have a W13 feet and to wear socks and spreaders I fear would increase my size even further and I am very conscious of the size of my feet. It is very common for others to comment. Although, I am at the point that I would rather comment on my big feet and my feet be corrected and pain free.

    • @correcttoes
      @correcttoes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there,
      I am unsure of a specific brand that carries W13. We at Correct Toes actually recommend men's shoes. It is not uncommon for women's shoes to be too narrow and small. We encourage you to embrace any shoe that works and fits for your specific foot. Try the men's shoes and another trick would be to remove the shoe liner(the factory liner). This will provide more room for your feet. Before trying shoes with the correct toes, we encourage you to ensure they're the proper fit by utilizing the "shoe liner test," this can also be found on our page. The brands Altra, Vivobarefoot, Bearfoot shoes, Xero shoes, are a great place to start. Please visit our website at correcttoes.com to check out other shoe brands.

      It is always best to speak with your provider, you're more than welcome to schedule a remote visit with one of our podiatrists as well. It's hard to say one thing fixes all people, we stand behind the fact that people are unique so I cannot answer medical-grade questions. Our general recommendation would be flexible shoes to allow for strength but someone with an injury may benefit from something different. We wish we could provide you more but please visit with a natural podiatrist to discuss further treatment.

    now comes the REAL issue. If I wear a medium width my heel and the the mid foot remain too loose. Even the Best made sandals are too loose. Meanwhile I have yet to find a shoe that is wide enough at the toes, even those designed "natural".
    How about the thought that the width needs to be a measure at the circumference of the midfoot? In essence I would need an A width heel with an A or B width mid foot and an E width toe box.
    The next question is why the medical industry has not changed the entire industry to conform to the physical design of the foot? Anything less is actually foot binding which was outlawed in every country that performed it.
    Last, There are some of us that WORK for a living. We wear boots that are designed for safety, steel toes, metatarsal support and protection, electrically insulate, non slip and VERY EXPENSIVE boots that still cramp the toes. I would give a guess that no one will be re-designing them at all.

    • @correcttoes

      Great question! We recommend taking the shoe and flipping it over, superimpose your foot on the opposite shoe. This way is a bit less accurate but the idea remains, you'll want your foot to fit within the outsole.

      @correcttoes  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarcP5267 Yes, flipping the shoe over won't be as accurate but it is your best bet at visualizing the shape.
      We do not support the idea of "snug" or shoe specific sizing. Unless they are sport specific such as rock climbing, however we stand by stating these shoes are not healthy and should be used in moderation. We are looking for a healthy shoe to fit your foot and allow it to splay naturally. For leather shoes we say the same, always check with the shoe liner to determine proper fit.

      To start we don't recommend New Balance or Hoka at all. They don't have the correct shape to accommodate Correct Toes so we don't suggest using them at all, especially with Correct Toes. Diving further into our practice and the reason for Correct Toes we aim to provide a natural, non-invasive approach to foot health. This means natural shape as well, traditional shoes do not provide this. You can view our online sites to find brands and more on what shoes we consider appropriate, such as Altra, Lems, Bearfoot, Vivobarefoot.

    Do any of these companies make shoes for wide feet? I don’t mean correctly-sized toe boxes for normal width feet. If a shoe only comes in one width for a given length then it won’t fit people whose feet are on either end of the bell curve. I looked and neither Altra nor Lems make shoes for wide feet. I’m “lucky” and my toes splay nice and wide so I don’t need correction using the toe spreading device. But that means I’ve never found shoes that fit, aside from flip flops. My best fit is ASICS EEEE, but my pinky toes blow a hole in the side after about 1 year because the toe box still isn’t wide enough.
