  • Brand New 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor, tow car, but we find a issue, well actually possibly 2 issues.
    Styled on the Ford F150 Raptor, the new Ford Ranger Raptor is a beast, huge impressive looks and a massive amount of technology as standard.
    Will the ford ranger raptor make a good tow vehicle with a 3.0 v6 petrol engine and only doing around 18mpg what will it TOW like and will it make a good tow car.
    We have a quick review tour of the ford ranger raptor, look at all the features like adaptive cruise, adjustable ride settings heated seats and steering wheel, The new Ford Ranger Raptor really is full of features, look at the new design head unit commanding centre stage.

    I have mine 3 months now with just over 8000 kms (mostly done in uk) and so far it's the best vehicle I have ever had. I did manage to get 11.5 l/100kms (but there is no fun in that.) The worst I got was 21.5 l/100kms. It tows trailers fine. The only thing is you can't unlock/lock the door without using the key. You should turn off lane assist otherwise it feels like 2 people are driving it. Brilliant off road.

    Hi mark it looks great one thing I will say I had a brand new korando and back last year and the best thing I did was to hitch it up to my caravan and make it work is the best way to run a car in if done 6,000 miles now and it pulls the van very well best thing I did. Last Ford I had was a Sierra XR4x4 2.8 V6 Cologne...when we had the Beast from rhe East the other year I was the only one to get into work EVERY day going via rhe usual country lanes where no other cars went in "deep" snow and at £70 / year insurance a great car in immaculate Ford black. Sold that a year or 2 ago. Last year bought a new 2 tonne caravan with a 100kg nose weight and after much deliberation and viewing of different cars which became a bit of an obsession even down to checking the VIN plate weights on all the larger cars and SUVs coming into our LARGE busy bodyshop to see what was or wasnt suitable including viewing and discounting the likes of Evoques/Audis/Mercs/VWs/Hondas/BMWs/Toyotas/Ford's etc bought a 4 year old Santa Fe Premium SE Blue Drive 2.2d manual with a years warranty still left and a huge list of std features. Pulls the caravan effortlessly eapecially after the Stage 1 remap and has not only heated front and rear seats and steering wheel but also cooled front seats for that hot day in summer. Tilt/slide panoramic sunroof, adaptive headlights, auto tailgate/lane departure/TPMS/blind spot monitor when reversing out of a parking space, multiple self parking, modes, air con glovebox for my meds , speed camera sat nav , privacy blinds , the list goes on and on. Has to drive 280 miles each way to collect it but what a fantastic drive back it was (except the M25 car oark..lol).
    Look forward to seeing how you get on with it re towing

    1:33 that is the most phallic looking hitch ball. Reese and Curt both make drop hitches for 2" receivers and they will be much stronger than an option that relies on bolting the ball to a plate. Amazon UK has various Reese versions starting at 30 GBP.

    Hi Mark, your new Raptor suspension will not cause damage to a caravan or any other trailer. Unlike a std Ranger the Raptor doesn't have rear leaf springs, it's fitted with a unique fox racing damper set up which gives it better ride quality and refinement than most cars.
    Also don't rush to alter the towball height. My 2022 special edition Raptor tows our 2020 Swift Sprite Quattro FB perfectly level with 100kg nose weight.
    The only issue I was concerned about was the aggressive off road tyre treads firing stones at the caravan. I solved the problem by replacing the std Ford (way to short to be of any use) mud flaps with my own custom made one's and the problem was solved.
    Regards, Will.

    • @andywolfymason4436
      @andywolfymason4436 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just be careful you don't exceed the maximum tow weight of the Raptor, which is only rated to 2.5 tonnes (2500kg), which is the only draw back compared to the Wildtrak which as a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes. I'd also stick with the BF Goodrich tyres, as the space inbetween the treads is wider, meaning your less likely to pick up stones and flick them.

    Hi Mark, have you done a follow up video of how the raptor gets on as a tow vehicle? I have a 2022 Bailey Unicorn Pamplona and am seriously looking at a Raptor. My current vehicle is an old 90 series Prado (petrol) which I love, but its a little long in the tooth for the big boy vans. some times I fell like the van is driving me lol

    • @thecaravanplace
      @thecaravanplace  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am planning one. But it's spot on, as long as you can live with the mpg, roughly 19 on average. Tows really well and a lot of fun as an everyday vehicle. The tech is very good. It will drive itself on the motorway so makes long journeys easier (not while towing)

  • @davereynolds3682
    @davereynolds3682 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hi Mark, When I thought of getting a Ranger, I was told that the suspension is to stiff for towing caravans, and can cause damage whilst towing, also, some insurance companies dont like it!. However, you can get a sprung tow hitch (the name escapes me at the mo) but using one of these will not only be kinder on the caravan, but may negate getting the towhitch lowered! just my thoughts.
    Regards.
    Dave

    • @thecaravanplace
      @thecaravanplace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I intended to tow with it I would take a body on frame vehicle over a unibody every time. That being said, 3.5 tons is barely worth talking about. My lighter trailer (30' enclosed car hauler) is 1.7 tons empty and up to 6,350 kg when fully loaded.
      I'm pretty sure that the Raptor will have no issue pulling 2500kg up a the mountains in Wales. It has the same tow rating as the US version which means that it was tested based on SAE J2807 standards. This includes a climb from 550' elevation to over 3500' elevation along the Davis Dam section of Arizona State Route 68. The climb is 11.4 miles long and the minimum air temperature at the base of the grade is required to be at least 100F. How many mountains in Wales are over 3500 ft?

    Ford is able to deliver such nice packages when it put the efforts in, a serious unit with all the fruits.
    I just can’t understand the OEM tyre choice: fantastic puncture resistance and great off-road ability at the price 15kgs extra unladen weight at each corners (driving dynamics down, fuel up), and notoriously bad in the wet.
    Silly marketing ploy when hardly 5% of those Raptor will ever see the terrain where those KO2 are most suitable.
    Ford should have privileged braking distance and wet tarmac handling, over puncture resistance and mileage.
    If I was buy one, I would immediately purchase and road biased set of rim and tyres for daily drive. Over the life of the car, it would pay itself of in fuel saving (and road noise), keep the OEM set to play in the dirt: you’ll ever need one set

    You are certainly better off getting out of any JLR vehicle. The most unreliable junk on the planet. That Raptor is a beast.

      I was a bit worried when we had the discovery but it's been perfect over the 2 years we had it to be fair.

      Just put the Australian tune in it and let it do what it’s meant to do. EU emissions laws are a joke. Leading the world, down the sewer.

    What did you put CAN IT TOW in the headings when you could not test the towing ability. Anything to get some extra views. Come on and be honest, after watching this video and realising the heading for it was a big lie, I wouldn’t buy a packet of chewing gum from you, never mind a caravan or a motor home.

      Because we can't at the time, but we have now towed 2 tons so will do an update soon.

    Lol, Brit engines in comparison to North American pick-ups, amusing.
    I personally think they are overpriced. They cost upto $108,000 in North America. My cousin jn Calgary has a Dodge Ram 1500. Hideously big and the only good thing about it and any big pick-up, is you can wear your cowboy hat whilst driving it.
    You would buy a Range Rover and you know it, at that price.
    $108k for any pick-up is LOL.

      Wow yes that's a lot. But you get a proper engine too lol.
