Those are very nice! Thanks for making this video. There’s no videos on this DS leather in youtube. I ordered my pair of W&C DS leather from Nicks 3 weeks ago so I have a long time to go. I also ordered a pair of the Latigo leather so I can’t wait to compare those 2 pairs.
Just a heads up. The milled English Bridle leather is not embossed or faux texture. It is a finishing process. I quote from W&C "These sides start out the same as our traditional english bridle leather, but once they're finished and dry we tumble them in a drum. The process stretches and plumps the fibres causing the leather to soften and pebble. The pebbling will appear larger in areas where the fibres are loose, such as the belly and neck, but smaller in the butt the backbone. The milling process takes roughly 24 hours depending on the type of leather". I have a pair of Urban Loggers in buck brown milled bridle leather. They are absolutely gorgeous. The leather is very pliable but not oily and has very slight pull up. Because of the pliability they are incredibly difficult to crease, which I like. Thanks for the review. Nice to see the Nicks double stuffed appearing in the wild.
Ahhh ok. Thanks for the clarification. How are your boots aging? With the leather being so pliable, I am thinking there was not much break-in pain. At least for the uppers. And how is the patina going?
@@EscapedTexan Yep. Double stuffed is not milled. It is double stuffed. i.e. hot dipped in a special mix of oils, waxes and tallows - twice. Similar to the oiled Latigo but with a second dip. My comment was in response to part of the video discussing different W&C leathers (specifically milled W&C leather) not a comment on the title of the video.
If you get a high arch you need the extra room in the toe, because as you wear them in, you foot will drop a bit, for lack of an explanation. It will settle, so don't worry about it. Also, you can have thicker socks if necessary. The leather is treated with waxes and oils built in. Its an excellent leather. Good choice and they look great.
Thanks for the insight. I just bought some thick socks this week and have been enjoying the different fit and feel of the boots. The arch feel remains fine as I never experienced any issues from the start. I’m only 1 month in to my daily wear of the boots so the break in is still in progress. The leather is darkening a bit and a patina is developing.
I think if the fitment was correct you will be rewarded with a boot that could be worn to retirement and after. Assuming no great changes to the foot shape. My first pair truly saved me during covid. Enjoy the journey!
Thanks for the tip. I actually haven't worn the boots for several weeks now. NYC is still in summer mode. I think I'll start wearing them in about 2 weeks. I think break in should be relatively easy.
Great review and some nice insights into leathers. Can you make a few update videos(6 months, one year) to show off the patina. I'm really curious to see how the leather ages.
Definitely will do. I applied some Saphir Renovateur a couple of days ago and have only walked around for less than one hour total (due to the hot weather). I think the leather is darkening slightly, but it's too soon to tell. When the weather starts to cool, I will be wearing the boots every day and then I'll see how this leather ages/patinas.
What size do you wear in off the shelf boots? They have urban loggers on their ready to ship pages in a 10..5 D which is what is wear in Redwing Iron Rangers. I want to order them but I’m worried about the size
10D. I ordered the recommended size of going a 1/2 size down to 9.5D after calling Nicks Boots and speaking with 2 or 3 reps. When I first tried on the boots, the toe area actually appeared to be a slight bit long, making the boot look a bit odd. But after wearing them for a few weeks, the leather molded properly to my foot shape and now they look good. I am happy that I chose the celastic toe as well, since it does retain the sprung toe look of the 67 last. As for you, definitely call Nicks and see what they say. I'm not sure how Red Wing sizing compares with Nicks.
Thanks for the response. I followed their do it yourself fit instructions. My foot was 11 on their sheet and they told me 10.5 should be fine. Thanks again
@@dz7385 yes, it’s a moderate dogger. The high heel reminded me of my grandpas cowboy boots too much lol. How’s the breakin going on the DS? Thinking about switching my order.
@@kp.co.6074 Just walked about 2-3 hours this morning. This time wearing socks. For me. I'm not feeling any pain at all. The soles and uppers are just a bit stiff. As for the leather, there doesn't seem to be any creasing so far. I think it must be the amount of oils/waxes/etc/. I'm happy with my leather choice, as I actually just changed it about a month before they actually made them. It was actually drizzling a little this morning too, but no water spots formed on the leather. I saw youtube reviews of the W&C bridle leather where there were water spots.
Wow! You're right! I did call them after they emailed me and said the boots were in production. But when I called they said something happened and they actually started production about 2 weeks later. Maybe the factory seconds is the pair they messed up? Sounds very plausible considering it is the exact same pair of boot specs as mine. Too much of a coincidence I think.
So far I really can't feel much difference between the honey vibram and the regular v100 vibram (on my Chippewa loggers). But I haven't really wore the boot for any appreciable amount of time due to the hot weather right now.
@@mr.monitor. I cant really tell the difference much. I have a pair of Chippewa loggers with the v100 sole and I dont feel a detectable difference. I'm just starting to wear the boots on a regular basis now that the weather has cooled off so I'm walking a lot on NYC concrete.
How do those sample leathers compare to DS leather of boot ? Which one is hard ? Which one is thick ? Which one do you like more ? Did you request samples or they just sent without being asked ? Thanks for that nice review. I ordered mine today and gave a long way to go
DS is more waxy to the touch. And after wearing them just for a few hours (still pretty hot weather in NYC), there doesn’t seem to be any detectable creasing. I think the W&C bridle Will crease more, according to the other TH-cam video reviews of that leather. The harder/drier one is bridle. The milled harness also feels dry and not firm and also thin. Samples directly from W&C are easily had by just calling them. Nick’s was reluctant to give samples, but I said I paid $700 and was waiting 5 months to get the boots, so I really need to see/feel/smell the leather I want. Unless you really know what you want, I do recommend getting leather samples. Nick’s should instruct their customer service people to send samples on request, and don’t be so reluctant to do so. Also, I don’t have any experience with their work leathers, so I can’t give an opinion. I only know that they are thicker than the heritage leathers.
Did you happen to get a look at or sample of the W&C Double Stuff Burgundy? I noticed on Nicks website under the W&C DS MTO page there is an option for the DS in Burgundy. I really wanted to get a Traveler or Moc Toe in color 8 cxl but it's out of stock and tbd on availability, I suppose. The W&C DS MTO looks like an even better option, however. I wonder if W&C would send a small teeny sample of the W&C DS B...
Just call W&C. They are really nice people and should send you a sample, if they have it available for you. Also, try asking Nicks too. Sometimes they're a bit reluctant to send samples, but I just remind them I'm paying $700 for a pair of boots so I should be sure of my leather choice.
