    “Should you choose to pull the trigger. Should your drama prove sincere. Do it somewhere far away from here!” As the last line in the song, it is worth mentioning that the message of the song might be written for the friends and family of self destructive or suicidal people.

  • @thinkingoutloud3757
    @thinkingoutloud3757 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even back in the day when this was a new song, I took this song as an expression of pure frustration. Like he doesn't know how to get through to his suicidal friend, and he's just throwing a fit about that, not knowing what to do. So he's not literally "dissing" or undermining the suicidal friend, but the whole song is an expression of how frustrated and helpless the observer feels, unable to sway the friend's mindset, and knowing the extreme pain that's likely to come from losing that person. So, the song is a massive, rage-fueled attempt at mental self-defense.

  • @JasonLevine1178
    @JasonLevine1178 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This album is basically a concept album from APC and it takes one through the 12 steps of recovery with the Thirteenth Step meaning getting out of the program and back to life. This song is the Outsider not understanding the mental health aspect of an addict but also not be equipped to help (as so many aren't) and getting away from them.

    I think this song takes place well after trying everything yo help someone you love. You've listened to all they have to say, you've done every course of action with no change but they keep grabbing your arm and begging for help that they very clearly don't want. The song is the realization that your loved one doesn't want hell, they really just want the attention but they refuse to be honest about it. They are hurting you and you are just done.

    I always took this song as coming from "an outsider" who judges addicts and has no empathy for them. There is also the other side to it where you may be a person who does understand addiction and mental health but has a loved one who is an addict. Although you may understand on a logical level, it being a person you love you get to the point of compassion fatigue, frustration, anger, grief and can feel these feelings as well in the moment. I hope you react to more APC specifically The Noose, By and Down the River, The Package, Orestes, Pet, and anything from the Stone and Echo album.

    Whats he craic, Drew- great to get some APC on here again. This is a cracking song that is energetic and has that gothic atmosphere that APC does so well. Im glad you went with this. If you'd like to hear something a bit more restrained,yet powerful in another way, then Id love to recommend "Three Libras". That is an absolute BEAUTY of a song. Some of Maynard's finest vocal moments are on that - and it will really make you hear and appreciate the more fragile and bittersweet side to Maynard's voice, and instrumentation that APC have. I would defo hit "Three Libras" nxt as a recommendation!

    The 13th step is a concept album. This song is about a person looking inwards towards a drug addict, and not understanding why they're doing this to themselves...The whole album is giving you different perspectives of drug addiction

    This album to me is a concept album, so it’s hard to judge 1 song by itself. The song that really grabbed me was “The nurse who loved me”. When this album came out, the radio station played it cover to cover and I was addicted for a hot minute. The views in this song don’t necessarily reflect his views by the end of the album. Or maybe he had 1 particular person he was directing this towards. Some people need help, and some people want you to think they need help. Btw I say this because I am an addict.

    The story is Maynard had a mate who was messed up on drugs and his mate's brother just didn't get it and couldn't empathise with the situation. He thought his brother should just stop taking drugs and was an idiot for not doing so. Maynard wrote this from his mate's brother's perspective - someone who is looking at the situation from the outside without understanding the true situation.

    It can be difficult to know how to assist when you can't tell the difference between someone in a true state of need and someone who is manufacturing crisis for the sake of attention. Both are cries for help, but one is considerably more manipulative in nature. I've always taken "The Outsider" to be addressing a person found to be in the latter category, with Maynard as the protagonist more or less saying "I don't understand this behavior, I don't know how to help, but I also can't enable it either."

    I have a bit of an issue with your first pause point and immediately going off on people having this harsh "mental health reaction". The lyrics are not a generalized " you're screwed up, lack of empathy" statement.
    You came to a really immediate conclusion without hearing enough of the song. This situation has been going on for quite awhile and he is exhausted with trying to break through her shell. She's a person that has deliberately blocked everyone's attempts to the point where they have to let go...and they are angry about it.

    @lewismaddox4132 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, it's still f'd! We tore down the mental health care system here in the 80's and 90"s and now the best place to get care is in prison. Yeah, law and order is now in charge of taking care of a population of completely neurotic humans whose families are too ashamed to admit they might have some coping skills deficiencies. You need therapy? Here's a list of professionals, most of whom have a waiting list of 4 months and many are old listings where there's a nail salon there instead of someone who can identify your desire to become an inkblot on the forest floor.
