    How do *you* count the "drama queen" section?

    • @kevinhurd6756
      @kevinhurd6756 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it's 4/4 but there's a weird 7/8 measure when he says "picture perfect numb belligerence"...and then when that section repeats before the change I believe it's back to 4.
      the fuckin lyrics from this dude. holy shit

    • @Auxend
      @Auxend 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      8/8 but with a 3+5 feel? It's flanked by a lot of 6/8

    • @ChristopherRoss.
      @ChristopherRoss. 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I hear it as 6+2 (not 8) the "medicated" hits on 5; and the turn around (picture perfect non-belligerence) is 3+3+2

    • @silphv
      @silphv 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always base counting on 3s and 2s in my head.
      3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 (three times)
      3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2
      Time sig I would say (12 + 4)/8 and then (12 + 2)/8... or 4/4 and 7/8 if you love to tie notes

    • @iain_nakada
      @iain_nakada 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With a steady pulse starting on the first 'chug' you CAN count:
      6 beats
      8 beats
      10 beats (kinda 8+2)
      8 beats
      Then the whole measure repeats. Throws you a bit as the second time through is pre-empted (the chug comes in one beat early but then falls back into line).
      I mean, that could just be seen as 4/4 (32 total beats), but it certainly doesn't sound like it.
      Really enjoying these. Wish Sessanta was leaving the States... :(

    It’s interesting because this album was created shortly after Layne Staley passed away. Back in the early 90s AIC performed with Tool right before Tool released Undertow. Again music is always interpreted differently depending on the person listening to it. But this song has so many different themes going on it.

    This whole album is a masterclass in song crafting. You're right: none of it feels technical or forced, because it's not - it's emotive and expressive. That's the Art. These songs just never get old... :)

      I really did think it was coalesce as well. It's so weird. So I've watched this live version a few times and it seems it really is 'over this'. Why do we think it is coalesce? th-cam.com/video/uXlKkzjkheg/w-d-xo.html

    The melodic line of "they were right about you" is very similar to AEnema's "I'm praying for rain" and Talk Talk's "Try walking like Jesus'.

    This is the magic of “Hijaz” or Western “Phrygian Dominant” or “Harmonic Minor #5”…
    This is Arabic/Moorish and ancient, as it was used as a basis of the roots of Flamenco, you can still hear hear it in the form called “Bulerias”.
    I do love how it crosses over nicely to rock music, and nobody does it better in rock than the Perfect Circle ⭕️

    I missed this one, another album for the ages. I miss APC, I never got quite as interested by Puscifer and Maynard's other ventures, Like Mezzanine (dissolved girl/matrix) the funny part with this one is the first time I heard it was on another movie (Constantine/passive) and immediately go "what is that, I want to hear more of it".

    Such a great analysis, thank you! I managed to get the individual stems for this song off some forum years ago. The guitar tracks are so beautifully layered with all these little intricacies and elements that you don't hear in the final mix. The first verse in particular has these C# major chords being played ever so subtly over the guitar feedback.

    it's funny
    i guess it shows how you hear what you want/need to hear in a song you love
    i took it as a self-help instruction manual
    dis-connecting and dis-assembling the old broken self
    it works good on taking the ego down some notches

    0:31 just to clarify; the song is not necessarily about suicide. "The Outsider" represents one who does not understand what it is like to be addicted to drugs; in this case, specifically heroin. The lyrics "over this white water, throw it away like this" and "one bullet at a time" allude to the use of drugs; white water being the drug itself and bullet possibly representing an injection(shot).

    I had always heard this was a rant directed toward Trent Reznor. To me, that "drama queen" section is 4/4 but Maynard is hitting off-beats (frequently the 3rd) with the vocals. Unless I misunderstood the question.

    • @artificialmusic
      @artificialmusic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing to do with T-Rez. Maynard said in multiple interviews (including on the aMotion DVD) that the lyrics are satirizing judgmental people who don't understand what their friends with addiction or depression are going through. One of these quotes is in the Wikipedia article for the song.

    I remember hearing him mention on the old Thirteenth Step dvd that this song and a lot of the album is about his ex-wife or an ex-girlfriend that had a heroin problem. He didn't know for a while "I just thought she was tired" Wouldn't be surprised if it was about his son's mother. But of course he always phrases things in a way to allow your personal interpretation while keeping his personal story hidden.
