I stated the reasons my mate and I I sold my Diavel and his XDiavel in your initial review so wont repeat, but will say we changed exhausts because they are so tame for such a bike and fitted tail tidies which puts the number plate under the back of the seat so cured (ish) the wet back problem. great honest and personal review tmf. that said it shouldn’t put anyone off buying one.. just make them aware of the little things that reviewers don’t always tell you. motorbikes are very personal things.. each to their own and all that. keep up the good work 👍🏻
Another excellent review with a nice twist: you sitting on the bike. Since I'm 5'7" with a 30" inseam it gives me a real appreciation for the riding position. It really hits home seeing the feet forward, shoulders slightly forward position rather than if you just said your feet are forward and that causes back pain after a while. Thanks.
As a fairly recent "standard" Diavel "Dark" owner, I agree totally with your conclusion, with the "X" version sharing many of the negatives of the standard one that I had. I would add another negative, which is the non-existent front mudguard - I mean.......what is the point of that!? With hindsight I bought mine with my heart rather than my head and was rather seduced by the Diavel's stunning (in my opinion) looks. However, after the honeymoon period reality and doubts soon crept in. I found the seat uncomfortable after about 45 minutes, with no room to move around when your rear-end goes numb, the engine vibes were very noticeable and obtrusive. Also, like you, I could never find neutral gear when the bike was stationary and I spent all my time going up-down up-down between 1st and 2nd....that very soon became a real pain. I thought it would get better as the mileage increased, but it didn't. For me, handling was also an issue, with that big back tyre deciding where it was taking you rather than vice-versa. I mentioned the lack of front mudguard - it would throw all the road crud straight at the front of the engine and in through the radiator grilles, where it is impossible to clean without taking things apart. All in all, a fantastic looking bike.......BUT!! After 6 months I sold the Diavel and got a Yamaha FJR1300AE, which was the opposite to the Diavel (i.e. better) in almost every respect.
Its refreshing to hear someone actually tell the truth for a change. Congratulations sir you have earned my respect, that is something that can not be purchased. Keep it up sir... I will be watching.... :)
Thank you Jon, I do try and be honest in all my reviews - it is only my opinion though of course and I’m not saying mine is any more valid than anyone else’s.
One of the downsides with belt drive is the 10-15% (depending on the setup) power los, while a chain only has 1-4%. It's also much more expensive. But a lot less work to maintain.
Belt drives are quieter and that may be the reason for their use. Environmental laws regulate sound and once they quiet the engine the chain can become very noisy at high revs. I hears this is why HD began using belts on some models.
@@anthonyrosa5006 That's interesting. I didn't know that. I never even thought about the noise level of a chain, but it makes sense. An old chain often is stretched unevenly, and will smack the swingarm as it tensioning. At high speeds, that is a lot of times per minute and a lot of energy.
I have owned both the diavel (chain drive) and the X diavel (belt). And really, honestly, in the real world that % loss is just a statistic. I know the bikes engines are set up differently but believe me, you don't miss those %'s
@@dimsandwich Was there a difference in town riding between them? Like slow traffic splitting? I've never rode belt and I'm looking for the smoothest setup. My MT09 was horrible in traffic
Have this exact bike and all the comments are spot on. You have however been plagued with terrible weather not suited to the bike so hope you have a chance to review in the dry as it’s a top banana bike in the dry
I’m taller and older yet I find the X- diavel one of the finest bikes I have every ridden. Yes I had pains in my back when I first started riding one, yet over time the pain has passed away. If you want your feet to be in the middle get the Diavel but I like the feet forward that’s the whole point of the bike, it’s a cruiser not a muscle, café racer or enduro and it does a very good job of being a sport cruiser.
I watch your review and decided that your negatives were not a problem for me so I went and put down a deposit on one today. I have always loved big heavy bikes and am the proud owner of an 04 Rocket 111, which I have had for just over 6 years now. Spent way too much money on her and we will never be parted, K&N air filters, full Maxton suspension front and rear, Dave Platt outlaw exhaust and more little things than I can even remember. I was looking for something just for me that was a bit more manageable, if I want to go two up I will use the Rocket. This bike was a steal at £14,999 brand new from Riders out of Bridgewater. Could not help myself, didn't even need a test ride as I tested a Diavel last year and loved the engine and sitting on this I new it was perfect for me. I am 6 foot 3 and big with it:) Can't wait for my first ride on her, just hope my Rocket doesn't get too jealous!
Honestly Xdiavels are mainly for fun, stay away from this bike if you want comfort. But let me just say you'll have the biggest smile on this bike if you just ride short distances.
Great review on the bike. Being an owner of an Xdiavel I do agree with some of the cons you said. All these items you noted can be corrected. You just have to spend money to a new motorcycle. With the weight ratio to a power cruiser from Ducati noting compares.
@TheMissendenFlyer - Tyre pressures are vitally important on the Diavel. I run my Diavel at 42 psi R and 40 psi F. If you still have the bike try these pressures and see what a difference it makes to the handling. My Diavel can be flicked around through tight bends (as many riders around here have remarked).
Spot on - if you fall into the mid 30s with the pressure the bike wants to stand back up in turns. Higher pressure lets the bike fall nicely into the corners.
Why more bikes don't use belt drive is a mystery to me. Mine (BMW F650CS) needs no maintenance at all and as I ride every day through winter it makes a massive difference for little power offset.
I bought my XDiavel back in 2016. I had to fit mid peg controls, Termi exhaust, Nitron R2 rear shock and Rapid Bike evo. I suspect that if you rode my bike you would have loved it. Took it around the Nurburgring and it was great
I have enjoyed these videos, I must say I own an xdiavel s and as yet have never had back issues when on long rides etc! The feet forward defo took some getting used but for Sunday rides what I do it is soooooo comfortable and great to chill on or blast!
Good point regarding the seating position and putting weight on your lower back and Coccyx. I always thought that position would be comfy but makes sense now you’ve explained. They do look beasts on the road. Only seen one though. Keep up the honest reviews. 👍
Had a good look at one of these incredible machines in Wheels Honda Leicester yesterday. Unbelievably huge back tyre...bigger than my Peugeot 106 diesel tyre. If I had a larger garage and a bit of money in the bank I would be very interested in one.....
This bike is for cruising down the Tiber and peeling off to the Piazza Navona for an Espresso, not down Snake Pass for a pint; at which it would be excellent.........IN RED! My mate does just that on his......loves it......so definitely ‘horses for courses’. Good honest review!
Very interesting review, thank you for that! I was wondering about something - you emphasized your dislike for the forward controls (we're on the same page in that regard). From that I guess you haven't spent much time on heavy cruisers and when I think of other reviews and opinions on the Diavel's handling I remember them to be quite enthusiastic - especially seasoned "feet forward guys" described the Ducati as a "sportsy" bike like experience for them. Could it be that the "going wide on some corners" roots more in your not being used to this kind of bike or does it really stiffen up in an unnatural way (read: way too much) at higher speeds? Thanks again for all your hard work, Michael
william smith because he likes the bike.. just because tmf isn’t blown away by it, that doesn’t mean everyone won’t be. tmf gave an honest opinion on what he thought were negatives... an opinion is a personal thing.. it doesn’t make him right. if we were all to ride what we’re told on youtube, you’d probably only see a handful of different bikes on the road.
@@andyjackson5 Hi Andy. I think we are exploring here the madness of love. William thinks he loves the bike. Sounds like he may not have actually ridden it, perhaps he will tell us?
Yet another excellent honest review. The bike will appeal to the cruising fraternity I'm sure but it wouldn't have been for me. I would imagine that standing is either impossible or downright dangerous and that would take away a lot of the pleasure I used to get from more normally pegged machines. Roll on the Rocket 3!!
Having owned one for 3 years I agree on some points. Pot holes transmit major shock to ones back. Riding in the rain destroys the confidence inspiring handling, I put this down to the riding position and part worn rear tyre. You do get a different rear seat and sissy bar for pillion use which you failed to mention. I’ve never run wide into fast corners but do find small roundabouts interesting as the wide bars go so far away! Cleaning not the easiest bike, especially Matt black. Worn tyres make big difference to ease at which the bike tips in. Fresh rubber on mine transformed it. I find exhaust plenty loud enough when winding on power above 6k rpm, variable valves must come into play! Good review tho TMF think you should have got the use of one in the summer though as better weather is where it really performs. Keep up good work.
A VERY HONEST REVIEW! Thank you TMF. But lets be clear on this, it's not an honest review because of a few (possibly) negative constructive criticisms which can sometimes over shadow a review. Over time it's become very obvious from existing owners where the short comings are, as well as the positive!
Interestingly there have been quite a lot of comments from owners agreeing with my summary! It is only my opinion of course and I'm no more of an expert than anyone else. Thanks for watching and for stopping by....
great review, you captured the good and bad spot on. I liken riding my X to surfing a point break, wildly exhilarating! and a little scary all at the same time. I will be installing the mid-mount pegs. Trail breaking right to the apex certainly helps keep a tighter line in the twisties with the rake and longer wheelbase of this bike. I can relate to your but clenching moment. Keep up the great work.
I know I’ve mentioned it before and I don’t want to bang on to much but you really need to try some of the little 250 2 strokes. I had an RGV 250 and it was the most fun I’ve ever had on any bike. Utter 250 stroker on the twisty’s heaven. Big bikes just don’t compare. Very light 2 stroke power band fun. Please review some of those bikes. I think you’d have an absolute blast. It’s probably not too easy for you to get hold of these bikes so whatever. But reviewing some old classics might boost the channel? I dunno. Love your stuff anyways 👍🏻
Great review TMF matches what everyone I’ve met that has one says too. Seems like a good idea at first and then 3 hours from home you’re ass reminds you this bike ain’t built for day long rides.
More often than not, I agree with your reviews. One look at this bike and it yells “gorgeous”. Upon closer review it screams “impracticality”. So there you go, gonna have to pay closer attention to your reviews to find disagreements. TMF scores a win again. 👍🏼
Great review as usual. I am an older guy Who has only started riding 12 months ago. I am currently riding a new learner legal Ducati Monster here in Australia and am looking to move to something more powerful. The Xdiavel has always appealed but maybe is too much bike for a newby (but sensible) rider. The alternative is a Multistrada 950s although I have no interest in off road adventure riding. I do most riding around town and short trips but am planning some longer touring type rides all on bitumen. Thoughts?
Very pretty bike, but I have no use for a “bar hopper/pub crawler”. If I am going to be uncomfortable after an hour I would prefer it to be on a track. On public roads my old bones prefer a bit of comfort. Great review TMF! Peace!
I have the XDiavel S for 3 years now, and I have to say it's not an easy bike to ride. Specially if you live near the alps in Switzerland full of sharp turn up or downwards. You really need to have some good technick to ride it which I had to develop (and god knows I don't master it yet). I agree is not the most practical bike but I never had a single problem with the posture which I find totaly comfortable. I have the default exhaust and it's true it's not the loudest one but for this country it's better like that otherwise wouldn't be approved for riding and people would complain. I already had a 40 years old lady asking me to turn the engine off as I was preparing my GPS...
All well and good but when are we going to see your Rocket 3 review? Took the R out last week and it has a very naughty engine! GT next week but would love to hear your opinions of it.
Diavel looks cool, I do quite like it. To me the Rocket 3 looks cooler . All of these types of bike, it's the manual handling weight I find intimidating. I find pushing around my ( 215 Kg wet) Speed Twin enough of a slog, I quite like the lightness of my ( 187 kg wet ) Street Triple 660cc . I miss pushing around my 126 Kg CB125R ! That was easy. However I've got to get me a test ride on at least a Rocket 3 ...
This is why motorbike brands/dealers should definitely lend their bikes to motovloggers like TMF more often. I mean, I'm not a potential XDiavel customer but if I were one, this video would definitely shape my final decision.
Bit late to the party, but I have 10 mins to waste Great review, fast, tactful and no faff. I don't agree with some points but do with most of it. That's just an "each to their own" thing. I've had the Diavel and now have the X Diavel. The Diavel embarrassingly blew it's engine up on the Cadnam on slip of the M27 after I'd just obnoxiously overtaken another biker at the roundabout before it. It only had 10,000 miles on it. Ducati were good about it and I ended up on the X. I've now had that for 29,000 miles and it's been the most reliable Ducati of the 3 I've owned. Make of that, what you will 😜. (The other was a multistrada which was a pain but great when it didn't have a warning on the dash). I don't get the bad back and have done a number of european trips (Alps, Pyrenees, Pecos etc.) With 3 and 400 mile days no bother. I also don't get wet up the back but I run mine with the little sissy bar on it, wonder if that's shielding me? As far as cornering goes, I would understeer early days, then had a bloke monkey with the suspension settings and all of a sudden I was happily pushing the inside bar a bit harder and grinding pegs with a big grin on my chops. Oh and if you squint at the backlit switchgear, the ones on the left make an X shape and the ones on the right make a sort of lower case d (or is it an exclamation mark?). Thanks TMF
My very first thought was who picked out that color geeez. You couldn’t give me that bike in that color. While I love the looks and styling, I’d never be able to ride it with those front controls. If Ducati is listening, fix a few things people are complaining about and you’ll have a near perfect bike. Oh yea and I’m a Harley owner.
if you give a Road Glide or Indian Chalanger a ride through some twistys that Diavel will feel like a Street Triple .. SEriously be careful trying the bigger baggers if you arent used to them ..The rules of momentum and finding a line are quite different at 900 or 1000 pounds ... THey are a very different cup of tea :)
TheMissendenFlyer I’ve had the Diavel 1260S with Termi for 9 months. Love it and as you point out the riding position makes all the difference with the pegs in the proper spot.
Great, honest review as usual. That bike looks great and I'm sure it is a performer, but it isn't for me either. That riding position is one thing that would kill it for me. It's too expensive for just a short ride now and then.
great review.. but in all honesty I don't like the see the LED switch gear on all bikes.. it just adds another thing to the bikes to increase the price tags
As an owner of a 2017 model I agree with most of this but the comfort. Its the most comfortable bike I've ridden (been on quite a few), this might be down to height? I'm 6'3. I also carry my gf on the back sometimes and she complains that its very uncomfortable after 30 mins.

Yes I agree - these are only my opinions and I’m no more right than the next person!
Yep, your review confirms my preconceptions. Not a bike for me. Thanks for the honest review - a valuable resource.
Yes not a great time of year for this type of bike - agreed!
Bloody hell T shirt time in this cold ol weather! You bloody hero!
It was a rare sunny winters day!
Ha! Was thinking the same thing what a dude.
Great honest review, exactly what we want to hear, the good and the bad!
More this type of review Please. This is real truth talk. Appreciate it.
Thank you for an honest review. I'm a Ducati fan but comfort and ride-ability come first.
Took it around the Nurburgring and it was great
Yes quite possibly - thanks for watching...
I have enjoyed these videos, I must say I own an xdiavel s and as yet have never had back issues when on long rides etc! The feet forward defo took some getting used but for Sunday rides what I do it is soooooo comfortable and great to chill on or blast!
Glad to hear it - I guess we can't all like the same stuff, just not for me this one....
It’s a sunny day bike. You hit the nail on the head TMF 👍
Hey MissendenFlyer. It's kids, hope you're well
Good point regarding the seating position and putting weight on your lower back and Coccyx. I always thought that position would be comfy but makes sense now you’ve explained. They do look beasts on the road. Only seen one though. Keep up the honest reviews. 👍
Will try my best! Thanks for watching....
There is a reason these things are "rare"....... fair play to you for the honest appraisal
Glad to see Andy can't be bought, even after a months loan of a top of the range Ducati. Refreshing.
Had a good look at one of these incredible machines in Wheels Honda Leicester yesterday. Unbelievably huge back tyre...bigger than my Peugeot 106 diesel tyre. If I had a larger garage and a bit of money in the bank I would be very interested in one.....
These long term reviews are really good
Thank you....
I would be interested to hear your view of the newer diavel 1260 compared to this.
This bike is for cruising down the Tiber and peeling off to the Piazza Navona for an Espresso, not down Snake Pass for a pint; at which it would be excellent.........IN RED! My mate does just that on his......loves it......so definitely ‘horses for courses’. Good honest review!
100% - For expert riders I’m sure it’s great, just not for me....
TheMissendenFlyer me neither, and I’ve been riding since I was 13 (47 years).
Excellent review: comprehensive and above all honest. Thanks TMF 👍
Yes I think you could well be right Michael.
I want and need this with every fibre of my being 😂
But why ? Did you not just watch the review ? Are your eyes painted on ??
william smith because he likes the bike.. just because tmf isn’t blown away by it, that doesn’t mean everyone won’t be. tmf gave an honest opinion on what he thought were negatives... an opinion is a personal thing.. it doesn’t make him right. if we were all to ride what we’re told on youtube, you’d probably only see a handful of different bikes on the road.
@@andyjackson5 Hi Andy. I think we are exploring here the madness of love. William thinks he loves the bike. Sounds like he may not have actually ridden it, perhaps he will tell us?
Ducatis actually always been my favorite
Gotta love Ducati's!
Thank you Andy!
Cheers Peter!
Really a quality review Mr Flyer! Cheers and have a great weekend!
Thanks Rutger - you too!
That color is awesome! I love my XDiavel. But this color is 🔥
I'm not sure I;m a fan on this particular bike.....
excellent honest review - that's why I watch your channel!
Good honest review. Look forward to your thoughts on the new Rocket 3 now you've ridden the XDiavel.
Stay tuned!
Great review, chap and congratulations on the 150k subscribers!
Thank you for noticing!
Thanks for the honest review TMF............War of Worlds "Tripod" looking to attack you! (Low sun & shadow)
On the basis of this very thorough review I can conclude I ride far too much to ever want one of these...
Excellent review I appreciate your honesty and straightforward approach...
Thank you!
Thank you Bradley!
I'm a primary school teacher and nowadays I say to my kids "stick around and stay tuned" after telling them what we're learning today
Nice!
I wonder where you got that from? LOL
Thoughts?
Touring not good in this position IMO - short rides fine
Very honest and concise review
I had the same issue with my back. Good for a short time ride 👍🏻
Glad it wasn't just me!
Very pretty bike, but I have no use for a “bar hopper/pub crawler”. If I am going to be uncomfortable after an hour I would prefer it to be on a track. On public roads my old bones prefer a bit of comfort. Great review TMF!
Peace!
Great review and you hit the nail on the head re once the novelty had worn off. Still love the look of the bike though!
Me too!
Another great honest review. Thank you. I would love to hear your thoughts on Ducati's 950 hypermotard.
Thanks. You just talked me out of buying the xdiavel haha. Its not a bad thing, atleast I am aware that it will not work for my needs before I buy it.
I prefer it to the rocket ! Looks so cool.i bet she goes like a beast !!
Nice honest review - well done!
Thank you, as always, for your honest review.
Honest review as usual, what a beast. I think i could live with it.
Guess if you love the engine but not the riding position then the Multistrada would be a better more versatile option. Good honest review. 👍
Very true - loved the Multistrada Enduro in particular when I rode that....
All well and good but when are we going to see your Rocket 3 review? Took the R out last week and it has a very naughty engine! GT next week but would love to hear your opinions of it.
I’m working on it! Stay tuned!
Great review....do you have one for the Diavel of the non-X type?
This is why motorbike brands/dealers should definitely lend their bikes to motovloggers like TMF more often. I mean, I'm not a potential XDiavel customer but if I were one, this video would definitely shape my final decision.
I have already bought one without driving it it will be dilvert in November I hope it will be fit
Thanks TMF
Cool!
Holy smokes. This is a beauty. Absolutely cracking.
it is but then that front piece od black tube frame just looks like a 1990 sachs.
better get to Specsavers
I hate mid set pegs. I love how XDiavel pegs are!!! I love my XDiavel S.
Do you have the Termi on your XD?
Fab review as always thanks again 👀👍
Nice honest review 👍
My very first thought was who picked out that color geeez. You couldn’t give me that bike in that color. While I love the looks and styling, I’d never be able to ride it with those front controls. If Ducati is listening, fix a few things people are complaining about and you’ll have a near perfect bike. Oh yea and I’m a Harley owner.
I must have watched at least 100 of your videos, which I truly enjoy, but please, please tell me what does TFT stand for?
Thin film transistor
Beat me to it!
if you give a Road Glide or Indian Chalanger a ride through some twistys that Diavel will feel like a Street Triple .. SEriously be careful trying the bigger baggers if you arent used to them ..The rules of momentum and finding a line are quite different at 900 or 1000 pounds ... THey are a very different cup of tea :)
Duly noted!
Excellent review!!
Thank you....
When you stick on the Termi exhaust you get the sound the bike deserves
Yes I’d like to hear that I must admit - this one sounds better when you wind it up but I seldom got the chance to do that...
TheMissendenFlyer I’ve had the Diavel 1260S with Termi for 9 months. Love it and as you point out the riding position makes all the difference with the pegs in the proper spot.
Very detailed and right on the money. Great bike... but I'll take the straight-up Diavel over the XDiavel any day.
Great honest review
Great, honest review as usual. That bike looks great and I'm sure it is a performer, but it isn't for me either. That riding position is one thing that would kill it for me. It's too expensive for just a short ride now and then.
great review.. but in all honesty I don't like the see the LED switch gear on all bikes.. it just adds another thing to the bikes to increase the price tags
Agree. Options are limited considering the cost etc.
As a newbie and after riding my Kawasaki Vulcan S, I must admit that every bike is intimidating!! Hahaha…
I would never buy a Ducati......don't trust the reliability. But godddamn they are works of art!
Mine has been very reliable (899 Panigale) - I love them!
As an owner of a 2017 model I agree with most of this but the comfort. Its the most comfortable bike I've ridden (been on quite a few), this might be down to height? I'm 6'3. I also carry my gf on the back sometimes and she complains that its very uncomfortable after 30 mins.
Yes maybe it's a height thing - I'm a shorty compared to you....
Great review Tmf thanks from Danny
