It's been a little over 8 years since I uploaded this review. I ended up wearing the watch until the strap became really dirty to the point where it became ugly to wear. The rotating bezel also started peeling its paint after heavy use. I didn't bother looking for a replacement strap but the watch served me well for a couple of years before I decided to move on. I had to replace the battery twice in that period which means it broke the water resistant seal as well. At the price I paid (approx. $125 USD back then), it was a good buy for a nice-looking multi-function watch.
It's a non-clicking, bidirectional bezel because it's meant to use with the compass much like aviation type watches don't have clicks to be able to use the slide rule functions. Divers has made many people think all bezels should click. Lol. And yes the white portion of the compass hand isn't useless it's meant to show the south heading just like any manual compass (usually red indicates north and white indicates south). Just fyi.
I own this exact watch and it is seriously a very good watch. Super comfortable. Keeps excellent time, does not suffer from the usual louder Timex "TICK" nearly as bad as every other Timex. This is likely due to the larger more substantial design of the "Intelligent Quartz" line of watches. This watch will not keep you up at night! I've abused this watch in beach and pool excursions for about 5 years - always on my wrist when snorkeling or spending time in wet weather. It is absolutely priceless when fishing and it gets abused! bait slime, dried and wiped with sand and the finish is still in superb condition. It cleans up like new after each trips. This is one of the true bargains out there for you average surf fisher or outdoorsmen. Though, it's not quite 'field serviceable' unless you carry a spare battery and a pocket knife. BTW, I'm on the original battery and it's June, 2018.. So to say the least it's very good on battery use. Pros: The strap is luxurious silicone Cons: Can be hard to read for tiring eyes Lastly, when properly calibrated the compass is very accurate - most accurate of any of my compass watches save for a GPS enabled smart watch I own. This watch will get you home. For the money, it's impossible to knock on.. Nobody has a watch with as many features that actually work well in this price range. Its a break-through watch that found a niche following.
Actually a Digital Casio beats it in any category for accuracy. It's accuracy is bad for the price. I am not sure how big are you, but mine with a leather strap is supper uncomfortable, and unless you wear it with a short sleeve, you cannot wear that monster without your clothing or jacket catching on it. A total dread to wear on cold/winter weather. The compass is useless inside a car or machine. Horrible watch, and the temperature sensor is absolutely useless when you are wearing it. Garbage watch for the price.
The white hand at the opposite end of the red hand serves a purpose, it tells you the back bearing or reverse bearing when in compass mode it is not for decoration
I have one of these as well. I am a big fan of large, multi-function watches, and this fills the bill. I, too, find the watch works well with the same issues you describe. But, overall, it is a fun watch, does a lot, and is not expensive to obtain.
I bought mine not working from a guy in India on ebay hes really good has a huge selection of good quality non working watches I replaced two coils inside mine and stripped cleaned lubricated ,reassembled and now I have a great watch for yachting for 28 usd shipping from India was only 3 usd
With the temp thing, I have the WS4 and it's the same issue with the temp sensor. I've never had a problem with it, once I take it off for a few minutes it gives an accurate reading.
oh, and BTW, when you wear the watch in the water the temperature is correct.. Say when you're snorkeling or playing int he waves or swimming.. it'll give you accurate water temps.. Off the wrist it will give accurate air temps IF it's in the shade.
Thanks great review i sail and would need to adjust the tide setting for the port im arriving At, you can never have too many compasses on a boat , you point the hour hand at the sun bisect the angle with 12 to give you south in the northern hemisphere, so an extra check on your bearing is already on the watch, nautica have a similar model
Instead of the temp scale, they should have compass markings. I would like to see at a glance which direction you are facing. The pointer looks the same at both ends when back lit like it is. Put a rounded end on the tail of the pointer, and have N, E,S.W instead of the Fahrenheit scale. Otherwise it's a very nice watch, probably get one this weekend.
I ended up gettingv a g-shock with radio-freq. time, compass, temp, 20bar waterproof and the best part is the solar usage and no 1-2yearly battery changes I couldn't stand that. Thanks for all the info here on this particular Timex was really helpful and a good watch for th e price.
Just bought this watch (T2N721 beige version) of Amazon for $86. Only one I could find that actually uses a magneto-resistive MEMS sensor like those used in cell phones. FYI folks the compass IS electronic with a powered indicator needle; it is NOT like a standard magnetic compass. One of the very few watches that actually has a compass and not just a compass dial that gives bearing using the 12o'clock/Sun position method. Also the South end of the compass needle has a circle so when the needle is over the day, it can still be read; a minor feature of the needle design. The compass MEMS sensor probably only has one axis so it can't correct for tilt properly; cell phone sensors have X,Y, and Z axis sensors to correct for tilt. Holding it level will probably give an accurate reading. The compass ring can be used to validate the electronic compass needle position using the 12o'clock/Sun method. Put a 2mm silicone thermal barrier under the watch when you wear it (not thermally conductive) and then you will have accurate ambient temperature (ha)! Almost a ten year old video, but very helpful. Thanks! Also saw your comment from 11 months ago (4/2020). Since my watch has a bare metal bezel, there is no paint to wear off like on your black version; thanks for the update. Additionally, why not just use the 12o'clock/Sun method to get a bearing? Well the Sun doesn't always shine. Especially on a cloudy night. This watch will give direction day/night, sun/no sun, AND underwater.
Mr cross: if u got the cash to splurge get the Tissot seastar. Class watch! Else if u want value then Timex ain't bad at all. I'm considering this one myself. Coz the Tissot is really pricey here :s
I agree with everything U said except of the spinning ring :) I bought the watch for 467 PLN (polish currency) i've got the blue one wth the rubber band. Its just GREAT! the compass is pretty accurate the temp is lil less accurate but still satisfying the tide indicator... i have to read about it but its not bad, i guess it depends on the location and i am not that close to the sea so... i tell u if i am closer ;) the spinning ring has no click just for the watch advantage.
The timex I have now is very loud. You can hear the thing clicking away when it's on the dresser. My wife cant stand that constant click from my watch. Is this watch noisy?
Thanks for your great review!!!!! Do you know what dimensions the O-ring seal have??? And for what are the 2 buttons on the inside....push and reset ??? greets
Thx for the great review. Do you know if the date has the "Perfect Date" feature like the newer Timex's where it auto adjusts for shorter months...or do we need to manually set the date every couple of months?
Hello, Just ordered this watch, wanna chage the band by a NATO strap, could you mesure the band with for me. I read somewhere it's a 16mm but I really don't think is that small. Thanks for your help !
U can much more accurate adjust the direction without the click (jump) of degrees so in my opinion its better if u use it in practice in the nature but a still respect Your opinion bc we all have another one. i like the thing wth "no click" ;) i recommend this watch as a REAL MAN watch and i also recommend this review :) bring other watches ;)
Hello. Just bought a t49861 and I cannot understand how temperature works. I only see the temperature after I push tide button but in videos at youtube I saw that if you wanna see the temperature you just push the up right button
bought same watch diff color paid 120.00 bones I liked that color but it was more also I have brush leather brown like it better than rubber one great watch cant praise it enough and the compass works yu have to calibrate it on the floor
hi,,,do you have to live near the beach for the finger dial to be accurate? ass i live one hour away from my nearest bech...the next high tide is 8pm,,,,,but my watch is saying next high tide is 11pm ,,,i just got the same watch as your and woundered if it falty,,or its because i live one hour away from beach,,,any help would be greatfull thank you best regards
Yes that is a good question. I've tried to figure it out and I suppose that T2N723 is newer one with lets say "full"/better INDIGLO and T45581 is the older one (its now not available on Timex website) with the worse INDIGLO. You can check difference and its huge... watch?v=W7oCiELB8uI&list=LLidQsUs4ZdqfkeYhrCIqVHg&feature=mh_lolz But as I said its my supposition.
hi! i have a watch like yours, and i was really wondering why my battery lasted only for 6 or 7 days. i just wanted to know how am i gonna turn off the compass and other features automatically except its time. appreciate. God bless.
The compass arrow actually uses the two ends of the needle as was mentionned by Jack Esparza and the compass won't take any battery life as it works with the magnetic field bringing the red point of the needle to show North... Has nothing to do with being battery powered... FYI
Does your watch beep when you push the tide/temp/compass buttons? I just bought one today and I find that only the compass button beeps, and not everytime. Is this normal on your watch as well? Thanks.
Hi, does anyone know the procedure to restart the watch after a battery change? A jewellery changed the battery and it does not work. The back plate has been placed wrongly the first time so i took to another professional who could not as well start it again. Thanks in advance for anyone who could help.
FYI the silver end (back) of the hand that you say is "useless" is actually to tell where South is on the compass feature (I'm pretty sure its a magnetic type of compass), and helps with calculating the azimuth. Actually without it the compass feature is useless, its just another hand that points at something on the watch. One other thing you failed to mention is if the bezel is a ratcheting ring, and if its uni or bidirectional (does it move and make little clicking noises?) Yet another thing the compass feature is completely useless without.
South indicator = North indicator +/- 180. the outside bezel is only a memory aid (which direction you want to head) unless it is a whiz wheel, like on an aeronautical watch. None of these features are necessity. Get it straight before you post.
as he mentioned, the temperature is influenced by your body temperature because the sensor is on the retro of the watch, so as he is holding it, he himself influeced the temperature because he was holding it properly.

The reviews you posted is it applicable to almost similar watch with off white dial and brown camel leather strap ?
Actually a Digital Casio beats it in any category for accuracy. It's accuracy is bad for the price. of course - that's basic compass dynamics.. ahahaha
Thanks mate for sharing the experience and technicality about the watch, i just bought it and now I know the functionality
Great review. Also, the resolution on your camera is outstanding. I can see each individual speck of dust on the wrist band.
awesome watch using for 2 months all function precisely.
Timex is Timex always manufacturer sophisticated stuff
I have one of these as well. I am a big fan of large, multi-function watches, and this fills the bill. I, too, find the watch works well with the same issues you describe. But, overall, it is a fun watch, does a lot, and is not expensive to obtain.

Only works when the Sun is out! This compass uses a digital magneresistor sensor that works 24/7.

I almost bought the watch, but I noticed on this video, that the celcius reading is not visible in indiglo.
WOW.. That is A Beautiful Watch! I like every part of it.
better than the other reg. green watchband.

The reason the compass hand has a loope, loose, hole is so you can read the date when compass is not in use

Massive watch.. suitable only for few! What were timex thinking 🤔
Awesome ❤ video and commentary ❤
How did you get it to beep? Great video thank you.
good review, thanks for the effort of doing it
Thanks for the detailed review. Looks like I'll pass, I want the temp to be accurate without me taking it off.
I live right on Lake Erie & I tried to set the tide on it & something must be off cause it doesn't tell me when high or low tide here is.
Hello,
Just ordered this watch, wanna chage the band by a NATO strap, could you mesure the band with for me.
I read somewhere it's a 16mm but I really don't think is that small.
Thanks for your help !
It's a 22mm lug.
Did you swap the band? Was the band easy to switch
Still have my timex but the indiglo ist not working anymore and as far as I know you can’t repair it

it has mineral, so it can be scratched, not so easily, but if you accidentally hit a rock or metal, you'll get some marks
Good review, very helpful.
Hi thanks for good rewiev.i v got one question is it model T2N.... or T49.... ?? which one is newer?? thanks
Dude what is the model number?? The old model is T2N40ZA and the center doesn't light up.
hi,,,do you have to live near the beach for the finger dial to be accurate? ass i live one hour away from my nearest bech...the next high tide is 8pm,,,,,but my watch is saying next high tide is 11pm ,,,i just got the same watch as your and woundered if it falty,,or its because i live one hour away from beach,,,any help would be greatfull thank you best regards

Yes that is a good question. I think the second hand needle is skipping some times. Do you agree ????
thanks for the vid, I just received my watch (europe) and decided to buy a metal band, you have any idea where I can find these??
PLEASE SHARE WHETHER THE INDIGLO FUNCTION IS SAME IN BOTH THE MODEL T49860 AND T49860 DH? OR IS DIFFERENT?
If your life depended on it, and you didn't have another compass, damn right you'd depend your life on it.
Bezel broke on mine after a year.

best review so far, thank you for the detailed explanation. Do you know when did they changed the indiglo feature? last year? thanks!
the indiglo light to my same timex stopped working after 10 days or so.
Great video, thanks alot! Soon this watch will be mine :-)

FishFind3000 lol
The compass uses an electronic magnetoresistive sensor; same used in cell phones. I IS powered by the battery.
hey, great review, thanks.....its ok watch........don't know if i'd buy it......Take Care
it seems that the second hand doesn't match up with the markings onthe side of the bezel....seems inaccurate
I've read around that Timex watches are loud, there's even a comment down there saying it. Is this watch loud?
Hey
do we have to change the battery every 6 months..?
Does your watch beep when you push the tide/temp/compass buttons?
I just bought one today and I find that only the compass button beeps, and not everytime. Is this normal on your watch as well? Thanks.
I already purchased this watch, the temperature sensor not reading correct
is this the T2N720 or T45581 model? And do you know which is the updated version, cuz one is older
T2n720
Hi, does anyone know the procedure to restart the watch after a battery change? A jewellery changed the battery and it does not work. The back plate has been placed wrongly the first time so i took to another professional who could not as well start it again. Thanks in advance for anyone who could help.
hey. just got this. my indiglo flickers when in compass mode. is this normal? is the battery low?
Hi im, interest in the weight of this watch in gram. I didn't find it on the internet.. :(
300gms
Are you able to change out Bands with this series?
does this watch recharge through light?
No. Battery only
i had the same after 5 months of use, i send it to guarantree center, they put inside brand new mechanism.

G Walsh Bezel is smooth movement
and not a ratchet type, bidirectional
is it waterPROOF? I do sea kayaking so I need something that is reliable..
I don't understand the luminus paint charging thing
What is it?
Grumpy Stormtrooper Grumpy Stormtrooper the hands glow in the dark. you 'recharge' it by putting it in light. sunlight is best.
how scratch resistant is the face of the watch?
What about the battery life ? Is it solar powered ?
Would you recommend it for climbing or extreme hiking?
You be better off with some hiking boots
Dobar sat imali ga u Beogradu i gde se može kupiti .
Does it come with an alarm ?
the seconds hand doesn't line up with the markers.
Started with 24 degrees and ended up with 31 degrees celsius inside. Seems like a lot of nice features that don't work that well.
as he mentioned, the temperature is influenced by your body temperature because the sensor is on the retro of the watch, so as he is holding it, he himself influeced the temperature because he was holding it properly.

génial mais y a t'il une batterie aux lithium?
Got this watch today, 10 years since this video, and mine is also showing date 19(its 14btw). Nice coincidence.
