If I had kept up scouting I probably would still be camping an hiking constantly. This looks like a perfect thing to remove the straps from, tie a cord on and put on my bag. Realistically I'm going to have a G-Shock on my wrist, and the temp is useless on your wrist as you mentioned. But the temp and tide are things you'd otherwise rely on the internet for and the compass is just one less thing you have to dig around for. If it was a pricey thing I'd never bother. But 200AUD for decades of use? It's amazing.
I'd say you're right in that the G-Shock will probably have features you'd use more regularly VS the Timex, and I like your idea of tying a cord on it to wear as a bag accessory.
