    Just a warning from a long time mechanic. 4,000 mile oil change with full synthetic on any GDI engines no matter what the manufacturer recommends.

      My oil does look pretty beat up at 4500 miles. My 2ar fe Toyota still looks clean at 5k. If you're doing anything resembling a severe service schedule. Maybe you could go a little longer if you truly were doing a lot of highway but most people don't want to think anything about there oil so 4k is probably a safe bet for the average person who wants to keep there car or cares about the next person.

      @@thetechlibrarian I would recommend 4,000 mile oil changes on all cars. It's the most cost effective maintenance you can do that alleviates the most amount of problems. You have to remember that no manufacturers on the market today build cars the way they should be built. With cost cutting to maximize profits and manufacturers that are beholden to their shareholders there is little room for care when it comes to the consumer. Just change the damn oil.

      Every 4,000 miles is both a waste of time and money, but of course a mechanic would want you in there more often.

    Your car is under warranty. Most important is to make a photocopy of receipts for oil, oil filter, engine air filter, ect. and keep receipts with a log-book to show date & mileage when service is performed. Without the documentation you could be denied coverage, should you have an engine issue. Photocopy is needed because the ink on receipts today disappears over a short period of time. I would also recommend following the "severe conditions" oil change schedule in your car's owners manual.

    • @David.Wolf.1
      @David.Wolf.1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mazda recommends following the "Severe Driving Scheduled Maintenance" if you drive your vehicle under any of the following conditions:
      1. The vehicle is idled for long periods or driven at low speeds, such as with police cars, taxis, or driver's education school car.
      2. Driving under dusty conditions.
      3. Driving for long periods in cold temperatures or driving regularly for short distances only.
      4. Driving under extremely high temperature conditions.
      5. Driving continuously in mountainous regions.

      @@TradingInNWA Just did an oil change at a Subaru dealership ... sorry, stealership for my Outback. It was $160 CAD for some $30 worth of oil and. a $10 filter. Two recommendations:
    1) Take a new oil filter into Wal-Mart and match it up to a filter cup. They fit on a ratchet to remove the filter. Do not use it to tighten a filter!
    2) Leave the access door off and start the engine to check for leaks.

    10,000 miles on the factory oil is far too long. I have always done my first one at 1200 miles to remove any fine metal particles associated with initial break in. Then full synthetic 5W-30 (I live in hot Florida) every 5,000 thereafter. Following this schedule and changing oil myself only costs $700 for 100,000 miles. Good insurance against engine problems. Having had several Mazdas with over 150,000 with no problems and no oil use between changes I would say this works.

    Great video. Only issue is the vehicle is still under warranty. I always pay for oil changes until the warranty expires. That way the manufacturer can't wiggle out of a warranty claim.

    Thanks for posting this video. I just got a used 2023 with turbo. Has 5200 miles on it and the Carvana sticker says it’s not due until 9628 miles. But I saw where turbos should be done like every 6 to 7 so might do a fresh change earlier just to know Ibhave a good starting point.
    You mentioned yours was non-turbo. Is the only difference oil capacity? Or is there something else with turbo I need to be aware of.
    Also noticed you were using Mobil products instead of OEM Mazda parts and oil. Just interested in your input/take on not using Mazda parts and Mobil over any other product.
    Thanks!

    • @David.Wolf.1
      @David.Wolf.1  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Having not worked on the turbo model myself, I can't say for sure, although my guess is it would be very similar. The basic steps are the same. Mazda does specify a different oil viscosity and capacity for the turbo engine though, 5.1 quarts of 5W-30 (versus 4.8 quarts of 0W-20 for the non-turbo).
      For most parts, I would recommend always going with OEM, but for regular maintenance items like oil and filters, I've never bought OEM. I think as long as you're buying full synthetic from a reputable brand, you're getting a product as good or better than what Mazda supplies. I've always used Mobil 1 products personally, but you can really go down a rabbit hole reading different opinions about oil on sites like Bob Is The Oil Guy.

    Hey nice video. Which trim is this? I am on the verge of getting this car, do you think you made a better choice compared to rav4 or crv?

    • @David.Wolf.1
      @David.Wolf.1  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is the preferred plus trim. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the three, but I liked the styling on the CX-50 better than the Honda or Toyota, and you'll also see a lot fewer CX-50's on the road, so it's more unique. It's going to be wider than either of them, with the flared fenders, and also have a lower roofline, so it's definitely a different look. The CR-V does come with a CVT transmission, and the base engine is a turbo 4 cylinder, so if you're looking for a standard automatic transmission and a naturally aspirated engine, you'll want to go with either the CX-50 or the RAV4. I would also go with the CX-50 or RAV4 if you plan to do more off-pavement activity in the vehicle, obviously none of them will be rock crawlers though.
      Glad you enjoyed the video!

After that I change oil every 5k miles with full synthetic. Oil is cheap engines are expensive. On top of that 0w20 gets diluted by gas pretty fast in DI engines especially in short distance driving

    Don't believe oil change intervals from the automakers. In the USA they get CAFE (fuel economy) credit for extended oil change intervals. I still change new car's at 500 miles, and the "Motor Oil Geek" agrees. 4-5000 miles after that, max. Lifetime automatic transmission fluid is even more bogus.

    Woo Nellie, hold on there Pilgrim. wait, WHAT? 11 months and 10,000 miles?!?!? Your first oil change on your wife's new $30,000 CX-50? Partner, Never go that long or that many miles on a new car before changing oil.... Your oil & filter should be changed at first 1,000 to 2,000 miles. Oil & filters are dirt cheap compared to an engine. Change your oil at least every 5,000 miles or 6 months after that first change. It's your car, your money and of course your choice to do what you wish. That said, You just spent $30k on your new car. You do not know just how good any engines machining was when manufactured. Actually You can never change oil to often. Oil is blood to your engine. The oil filter is like the liver and kidneys cleaning the blood. The very first thing dealers do when taking in a trade is change oil & filter. Did you see how black your oil was? Owners manuals say 10,000 mile interval as a marketing tool to make folks believe less maintenance required. Don't fall for this. Any Mechanic will tell you not to wait 11 months or 10,000 miles. Do yourself and your new cars engine a favor, spend a few bucks and change your oil & filter every 5,000 miles or every 6 months, which ever comes first. You may think this is over kill. I rather you change oil to often than not often enough. Your cars engine will thank you, returning many years of reliable service.
