    We just purchased a CX-5. We did not purchase a Toyota or Honda for these reasons:
    1: CX-5 is built in Japan
    2: CX-5 had the highest crash ratings
    3: CX-5 does not have a CVT
    4: CX-5 has a better interior
    5: CX-5 comes with AWD standard

    Mazdas are so underrated, had a 2015 Mazda 3 for 5 years with Zero issues, I regret ever trading it in. Fun to drive and very reliable. Planning to get one in the next 2years. In my humble opinion I think having a no touch screen is a great idea as it's letting drivers focus more on driving as opposed to being distracted playing around with a touch screen which can be very dangerous while driving. But that's just my take on it.

      I totally feel like I’ve gotten my money’s worth on this car over the last 10 years. Except for a few scratches the paint job has held up (I hand wax twice a year).

    Once Mazda got Ford off their back around 2008-2009, they have done nothing but steadily improve, refine & re-invent themselves to the point where they have become a top-notch Japanese brand (despite their small company size & market share versus Toyota, Honda, etc.). In that same span of time, I feel that both Honda & Toyota have slipped in build quality to some degree. After a problematic 2020 model year Toyota experience, I bought my first Mazda a little over a year ago (2022 CX-30 CE AWD 6-AT) after much reading, research & comparison. It has been a flawless ownership experience thus far, & no regrets. Easily the best small crossover in its size/price segment (IMO), despite Mazda being one of the smallest automakers in the world. Also, Mazda & Toyota have been in a partnership together for some years now, so hopefully they can both learn new things from each-other & apply those improvements & options to both their respective future lineups.

    • @someotherdude
      @someotherdude ปีที่แล้ว +10

      one thing is every Mazda looks the same. Their entire lineup looks like all close variants of small SUVs. They occupy a very small niche, kind of like Subaru. Mazda does deserve more success than, for example, Nissan.
      But every one of their offerings looks the same, there is zero differentiation, they have huge model overlap problems.

    • @inctru
      @inctru ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@someotherdude I do agree that Mazda has homogenized the general "Kodo" styling language of their vehicles a bit too much across their various model lines, so basically no real diversity in aesthetics. I do love though that they use a slick, elegant, classic-sporty exhaust system across their entire lineup. Flattened, hidden muffler design, dual R/L exhaust outlets & simple, sexy round exhaust tips on each. That's great attention to detail that most automakers just completely ignore/neglect with their afterthought, ugly/gaudy exhaust setups. Mazda also employ a modernized-design regular 6-speed automatic across their product line instead of dubious belt/chain design CVT's. A well-known Toyota mechanic with a large TH-cam channel has called that SkyActiv 6-AT transmission design "brilliant" & a role-model for transmission design. Other automakers should take some serious lessons from Mazda is several of these categories. But, Mazda could also still learn a few things from other automakers as well.

  • @SilverScarletSpider
    @SilverScarletSpider ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Some Mazdas don’t sell well because they aren’t properly appealing to the target demographic that buys the most cars- former Toyota and Honda owners that love affordable reliability.
    Mazda can add all the worthless HUD elements and fancy upscale leather interiors they want in the world, but if the MSRP for a CX-50 is too much higher than an equivalent CR-V or RAV4, then most normies won’t even bother going into the dealership for a test drive or to feel the luxurious interior first hand.
    In fact, most would prefer to forgive Honda and Toyota for using a CVT than give Mazda’s engines a try. Some would even give Hyundai or Subaru ownership a chance first because their AWD SUV prices can undercut their Honda/Toyota competition. That calculation has already finished before ever considering spending more money to get into a brand new Mazda AWD SUV with Takumi Craftsmanship and Kodo Design.
    Those buyers that are willing to pay more in MSRP for a more luxurious reliable Toyota or Honda already have Lexus and Acura to look at, and they will usually ignore Mazda.
    Mazda’s new design strategy is to try appealing to former Lexus, Acura, Audi, Infiniti, and Genesis buyers. Unfortunately, all of those prospective luxury car buyers are moving to BMW X3’s, Mercedes GLB’s, and Porsche Macan’s because those first two cars have MSRP’s that are shockingly low and most normie humans are non-subconsciously badge snobs.
    So whilst Honda can afford to go upmarket in their interiors and ask for a higher MSRP every single refresh, Mazda really can’t. The only reason why Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia are still alive right now is because they use super cheap steel and can set their car’s MSRP even lower than Toyota can or Honda and Mazda will.
    Trust me, I have trying to convince my friends to look into getting a Mazda CX-30 Turbo AWD instead of the silly Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Rogue, or Subaru Crosstrek 😔

    I'd be very careful purchasing a new Mazda. I bought a new 2022 Mazda3 in 2022, the premium version from Safford Brown Fairfax Mazda. The leather on my driver's seat is changing color, and it has been a month of back and forth between Mazda and the dealership. After submitting numerous pictures and with the dealership's internet not working, Mazda does not want to take care of this. They are saying it is normal wear and tear, and my car is STILL under warranty! Might be heading to the BBB soon.

    Just purchased a Mazda CX-30, my 3rd Mazda. So far I like it a lot, a nice balance of cost/performance/looks. There is a trim level called Select (which is like the second from the bottom trim level) that probably is the sweet spot for price/performance. My one suggestion for Mazda would be split the trim levels after the Select level, one luxury and one performance. What I mean basically is that in order to get the turbo CX-30 you have to buy one of the Premium level cars, which is multiple trim levels above the Select and costs about $8k+ more and has many "luxury" extras I did not want to pay for. If the turbo was available for $2-3k more than the Select (basically just a Select trim with the Turbo) I would have bought that in a heartbeat. I went for the Carbon edition, two levels up from the Select just cause I liked the color and red leather seats and black rims, but honestly, for the extra money I would have preferred the turbo and the performance enhancements and given up things like the sunroof.

    Just a quick note about touchscreen infotainment systems. I leased a CX-5 in 10/22 and a significant reason was that their infotainment system was NOT touchscreen. No, it wouldn't. The 2.5T doesn't like to rev and power drops off a cliff after 4500 rpm. With a manual you'd be short shifting instead of running it up to the redline. Even Mazda tuned their AT to shift before the redline with the 2.5T. It's not a rewarding experience. The experience would be more akin to driving a diesel. Not to mention Mazda doesn't have the money for the R&D and certification of a manual with the 2.5T, and they can't make a business case for it due to the low take rate of manuals in the US.

    • @ccchhhrrriiisss100
      @ccchhhrrriiisss100 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@RajaRaja-xs1he - Sure.
      Initially, I was looking at Toyota, Honda, Ford, Subaru and Hyundai. It didn't take long to realize the value, quality and luxury of Mazda. That is when I narrowed it down to Mazda. Within Mazda, I looked at the CX-30, CX-5 and CX-50. I also considered the Mazda 3 hatchback too.
      We are a married couple w/o kids yet.
      - The CX-30 front seats are very luxurious, comfortable and surprisingly spacious. I am just over 6-feet in height and my wife is 5'2". We both just fit very well in it. The driver seat is adjustable -- going back, forward, up, down, pivot-tilt and recline. Lower trims is a manual adjustment for each. The premium trims do this electronically (with memory settings).
      The CX-30 feels very sporty too. Everything is just placed very well and most of it is nearly identical between the models (i.e., CX-30, CX-5 and CX-50). Despite this, the CX-30 has the lowest price of the three models too.
      - The smaller size of the CX-30 provides just a bit more real-world horsepower. We get 191hp -- and you feel it when the light turns green or when on the highway (especially compared to other vehicles in the segment). We had considered the Toyota C-HR, Corolla Cross and Honda HRV. All three felt sluggish. Even the Bronco Sport felt underwhelming in terms of power (and sport for that matter).
      - The safety features on the CX-30 are identical to its big brothers. They are also very good and easy to use compared with vehicles from other companies. The base model CX-30 is missing blindside traffic alert. However, the other trims have all AND the blindside traffic alert. This makes mid-trims like the Select ($25,250 MSRP) and Preferred ($28,220 MSRP) quite amazing values.
      - We don't have children (yet). So, the lesser amount of leg room in the back wouldn't be an issue. We do have occasional friends or family members riding in the rear. I'm over 6' in height and I can fit well. It does feel a bit tight in the back, but it is still very doable (and comfortable too). Even if we have begin having kids, it's easy to get car seats in and out. If it is very doable for me (over 6-feet in height), then the kids can grow in this quite well.
      - The CX-30 just looks....amazing. It is very cool. One of the reasons we were interested in the Toyota C-HR was because of it's design. It's unique. However, the C-HR just had terrible interior design issues for the price. The CX-30 looks sharp. It's sporty and elegant at the same time -- both inside and outside. It's very unique when you see one on the road or in a parking lot. That's how I first noticed the CX-30. I live in the Silicon Valley and I saw a few around here. It was enough to attract my attention. While the CX-5 is somewhat similar, it looks a bit more "normal." Personally, I love the design of the CX-50 too. It looks a bit more rugged. However, the CX-50 looks like a cross between the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-30.
      - Price: Again, I cannot emphasize it enough. I was able to get the CX-30 below MSRP. Toyota, Honda and Ford were selling above MSRP in our area. The CX-5 is a more popular option (it's Mazda's best seller), so I don't know what price it would sell for (probably MSRP). I got the CX-30 for $1200 below MSRP.
      If I were you, I would visit my local dealership and test drive all three. Bear in mind the price and the size you would need for actual everyday use.

    I bought my 2016.5 CX5 back in 2019 as a CPO and its been pretty great. I used it to cart all my crap to my new job in Montana then drove it all around up there, even towed a UTV with it and it never quit or faltered on me. Then I drove it all the way back to Florida in late 2020 after my job let me move back thanks to COVID. It went the whole way towing a 10 foot trailer loaded with furniture with no issues. Now its almost paid off and I use it as my daily driver. I did do a few modifications to it to keep it fresh and fun, but its been a very useful and enjoyable vehicle. I appreciate a lot of the stuff mazda put into it, like the fun handling and comfortable interior. I also really enjoy the look of it with the swoop in the side doors. It may just be a CUV but I've really enjoyed my time with it and since its been so reliable Im probably just gonna keep it as long as it lasts. I only have about 45,000 miles on it so it should last for a while, I hope. Would I buy another mazda after this one though? I think so, granted I wish they would produce something like their RX-Vision concept car or something larger then the Miata. I love the Miata, im just too big for it and I would like something with a little more space since it'd end up as my daily. Maybe I'll look at a Mazda3 and see how they've evolved (hopefully with a MT/TB option) Its doubtful since Mazda wants to go upmarket so badly, such a shame because their MazdaSpeed cars were so cool.

      Cars (sedans, hatchbacks, coupes) in general are drying up. Last year, they made up less than 20% of sales, less than a quarter if you count luxury cars. Crossovers, SUVs, and pickups are, by far, the most common vehicles sold in the US, which also helps to explain why the average price of a new vehicle is in the mid-40s now. People just want mobile living rooms nowadays, what can I say 🤷‍♂️

    Mazda is second to Toyota in terms of reliability. It's pathetic that consumers don’t do substantial research and make decisions based on some observations done years ago. The only reason Honda looks a little better these days is all thanks to Mazda. Mazda has showed mainstream car brands that just because a car is built at a price point doesn’t mean that it must look like a bland and an uninspiring shit-box. MAZDA ALL DAY FOR ME. Mazda is the only brand that breaks away from the pack to do what they’re enthusiastic in creating. A car is not just about touchscreens. Bland and uninspiring consumers will always move in herds towards what the easy choice is. There will never be changes there. But consumers who like a little bit of thrill will gravitate towards vehicles that are created to give the thrills. I can boldly say that Mazda is the only company right now that has been able to crack that fine balance of dependability, exterior and interior designs, and an array of intricate and exceptional engineering.

    Your video was so nice and interesting that convinced me to comment and share my experience hahaha. So I was driving a Ford edge 2014 3.5 V6 likely 2 months ago. Then I bought a Mazda cx-5 2.5l naturally aspirated, I was looking for first something reliable (got traumatized with this 2014 Ford edge, although I had it running smooth for almost two years before the problems started to show up, ) so reliability was the main stuff and something powerful comparing to what I got used to drive. So they both have similar acceleration, and the cx-5 offers a comfortable space. And fitted on my budget, although I do miss this little percentage of power comparing to the Ford edge and also I miss the huge size from it, the cx-5 is comfortable and big but not that much, one thing I miss a lot is the automatic trunk 😂, and unfortunately this cx-5 I got doesn't have a remote start, it makes a lot of difference to start the car 3 minutes before you get inside , I live in UAE and here is hot as hooooot haha so it does make a lot of difference. Anyway. So far so good. Ohh forgetting to mention. I just hated the armrest of the cx-5 after driving for a while. You can say that it doesn't exist haah, so I bought an armrest from temu(Chinese app buy anything platform) that brought me comfort again. And now I'm happy haha. That's my opinion, and I shouldn't forget I was looking for a AWD it makes a good difference in safety aspect when doing curves at 140kmph (even wide open ones haha) . And the 2.5liters holds the potence well together with the gearbox so you don't need to fight the gas pedal hahaha

    I agree with you totally. Mazda’s marketing in the early 2000’s coming from a blahhh brand in the 90’s (except the MX-5 Miata) to fun to drive zoom zoom brand starting with the attractive looking, premium feeling, and fun to drive 2003 Mazda 6 really brought them back from the grave. They have continued to come out with enthusiast cars with not the best quality reputation (RX-8) but still a cult following, legendary and great in the gear head community, and auto world. Now they’re keeping up with the Jone’s with the wide selection of great looking and fun to drive Crossovers. They’re kind of high end without coming out with a luxury brand/division like Toyota and Honda did which saves money on the end of the day, but still gives consumers higher end trims fit and finishes without the premium price. (Not really but sort of) And many predominantly young professionals who buy the brand know this! Young professionals who don’t want entry-level fit ‘ finish of a Toyota and Honda, but can’t or don’t want to pay premium prices for a Lexus or Acura, or even German brands go for a Mazda, which will offer the same driving characteristics of a German car and similar luxury feel of a German or Japanese Luxury brand. (Mazda was actually going to be the 4th Japanese auto company to come out with a luxury brand but it never officially happened). So it’s a lifestyle brand. And only people who know the value of Mazda will buy it. They need better marketing, and appeal. They’ve attempted to make fuel efficient cars with the ‘sky active technology’, and they are coming out with a rotary powered extended range EV, but they need to focus on EV’s and hybrids more, along with a better infotainment system.
    And of course they need to appeal to people who don’t necessarily know about the brand and cars in general to attract those who are buying Hyundai’s, Toyota’s, and Chevy’s as well as Luxury brand buyers.

Low resale value will impact the number of consumers willing to buy a car they can’t sell or trade well in the longer term. Bingo. Mazda’s weakness is relatively poor gas mileage compared to Honda & Toyota even with all that Skyactive technology. No body wants a gas guzzler. Another weakness is less storage space again compared to RAV4 & CR-V. The third weakness is bumpy ride, particularly the rear end. It bounces making the overall ride not quite as smooth as in the other two. In the looks department, it’s drop dead gorgeous.

It’s got a very nice interior, important to me, plus it looks classy outside, too. The Honda and Toyota both did not live up to the Mazda. I love the height of the vehicle, my folding outside mirrors, the heads-up display, and all the safety features.

    Mazda's are not selling because they are marked up like every other car brand. Toyota and Hondas are selling more than Mazda becuase people who are forced to pay marked up prices know that they better buy a car that will last them 25+ years, eight of those years with $600+ a month payments. Bring a $0 down $300 a month lease on a Mazda CX-5/ CX 50 and people will come.

    My Mazda is the CX 30 which I bought new on April 1st 2024. I was in the search for a new vehicle to replace my 2014 Kia Sportage. I happened to be looking online at different vehicles and I liked the styling on the CX 30. Especially the look of the interior versus the other competitors in that model segment. I decided to go ahead and visit the dealership to see one in person. I also liked the fact that the Skyactive G engine has a really good reliability record and I also like the fact that it didn't have a droning CVT tranny which almost every other vehicle in that segment has.
    What really sold me was when I drove it. It's quick it handles great, the seats are comfortable. The benefit of AWD standard was also a good selling point. As far as the lack of a touch screen I consider that to be a distinct advantage. With Mazda 's Central console control button I can control every aspect of my radio navigation and other features without ever having to take my eyes off the road. My model also has the heads-up driver's display which I really like especially when using navigation as it displays the turn-by-turn directions right on the screen. There are so many things about the Mazda automobiles to love and I agree if they advertise more they would sell more. But maybe they don't want to. I believe they are comfortable with their position in the market.
    Nissan sales have not been very good compared to where they used to be. They are in the same boat as Honda losing market share. Right now we are hearing about a proposed merger of Honda and Nissan with the possibility of Mitsubishi also joining. That would make that group the third largest automaker in the world behind Toyota and Volkswagen. Since Mazda also has a partnership with Toyota that should allow them to stay and remain competitive in the automotive Market. I believe Toyota owns $5 or 6% of Mazda.
    Mazda throughout its history has always danced to the beat of a different drummer they have their own certain ideas and they like to follow them. They don't want to be the biggest they just want to be the best.

    My guess is that Mazda dealerships seem to be pushing the more expensive models and fewer base models. I just bought a Mazda 3 HB PP turbo. The dealership has no plans of getting any base models on their lot as I’m sure they have lower profit margins.

    • @markcoopers1930
      @markcoopers1930 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When I spoke to my salespeople they said the base models weren't selling even before COVID. The buyers in the $20-23k market segment prioritize the price and space over power, performance, transmission type, or interior. At that point buyers mindset is Corolla=Civic=Mazda3 and they mostly just want the best price. That segment is also constantly battling to convince the buyer who always buys used to buy new. Mazda pulled out their lowest offering (2.0l sedan) but we can expect Honda and Toyota to do the same. The market will be catered to by the subcompacts, the Impreza, and the Korean brand entry levels and they're more than ok to shift their production capacity to other products.
      Where Mazda3 outshines the Corolla and Civic is in the next step up. Unless fuel economy is your highest priority (Toyota's hybrid), the Mazdas are the clear winners over upper trim levels of the Honda's and Toyota's, and compete squarely against Acura. Better power delivery, better interior, more AWD options, more comfort features, and the turbos are leagues above the others unless you're trying to get the Type R and GR Corolla (which will sacrifice comfort and other interior points)

      @markcoopers1930 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brendaserafino5034 Depends what you define as a good deal. You should be able to get at least MSRP, so long as the dealership doesn't bully you into buying a "mandatory" paint and interior protection package. The only brands regularly selling below MSRP nationwide are Chrysler/Ram/Dodge/Jeep/Fiat/Alfa, and then Chevy trucks.
      Look at other dealerships nearby and see if they are advertising discounts below MSRP. If so, then that is leverage. If that specific vehicle has been sitting on the lot, that is leverage. Their vehicles seem to be the smallest in all the classes in which they compete. The CX-50 which I wanted to love was very underwhelming, plus with the turbo to even get the 251 hp you need to use premium fuel. The CX-50 also has beam suspension as opposed to independent. The Outback drives better and the turbo used regular fuel. CX-30 is beautiful, but too small to be practical.
