Thanks to this video I just discovered that I have had all along the official Mazda SD card that came with my CX-5 when I bought it. Now that I've used it and compared it to Google Maps navigation I can tell you that it's funcional but Google Maps is way better system. And I'm sure the same applies to Apple Maps. So if you dont have the SD card you're not missing much. But if you want to have one as a backup as Striker suggest it's OK to play $25-$50 for one. Don't go buy SD card for $450 from the dealership. Mazda should be giving their SD card for free to every Mazda owner.
Completely agree, great backup but those OEM prices are wild For people that like the turn by turn on their HUD (if available) it can make navigation more seamless. Wish carplay and such integrated on the HUD
Thank you for this. Your carplay/auto apps are better. But like he suggested in the video, I did drive some places with limited cellphone service and this would have been great to have. Bought on Amazon- tested it out this weekend. It works! I'm happy and didn't spend $450. 😂
Oh my Lord, thank you so much for the video. Was so confused as to what to do but you really simplified things down. It did make me realize I don't need this, but information itself is much appreciated!
Good to have a backup, but just a heads up: modern cell phones actually have GPS receivers that allow you to continue navigating outside of cell data signal.
This is so awesome man, thank you! I had a 2017 cx-5 GT with premium package and I loved the factory nav and traffic sign recognition with it. I was disappointed when I found out I had to buy that $450 sd card from mazda for the 2021 cx-5 GT reserve I just bought a month ago. But clearly I don't need to buy it! Thanks so much for this!
Yeah, my guess is Mazda wants to rake in money through people that pay for "official" map updates. I'm super thankful there's a cheap alternative from aftermarket. Even without a HUD, it makes so much sense for such a low price to get navigation (but not the crazy dealer price) I want to test more things like how it works with voice commands and Android auto, etc. My Honda Accord is a 2013 for example, and Honda still wants me to pay $150 to update the maps for the GPS 😂 WITH A CD! That said, even those 10 year old maps show 99% of all roads I've ever driven on 🤙Of course. More Mazda videos to come 👍
I ordered the SD card that you linked, installed it yesterday and it worked! Nav and traffic sign recog! I'm so pumped, thank you so much man!@@Striker50_
@@Striker50_ I agree with you on subject of map updates. I live in the general Los Angeles area in California. What posible updates are there for streets other than a new housing tract in the outskirts of the city where most people will never go to anyway : )
Exactly. Everything is almost already built with the exception of new sub-divisions, etc. While it can make a small difference, I don't plan on using this Nav for daily errands, just as a reliable back up @@mrsavant6214

Glad i could help! I didn't expect this video to get so popular, so some sellers have sold out of SD cards since I made this vid, but still very good pricing options. I was going to pay $76 for an SD before I looked into this and before making the video. Let me know if you have any compatibility questions
Helpful vid... thank you. When I bought my 2021 CX-5 GTR (new, 2 1/2 years ago), I beavered around and found, then purchased, an aftermarket navigation SD similar to the one you demonstrated. It installed OK and I've been using it since. Its worked seamlessly with no problems. 🤫 A week ago (March 26, 2024), MAZDA invited me (via email) to UPGRADE my map data SD using their Tool Kit which I did. Again, it installed OK... no problems. 😲 I'm a happy camper.😎
@@Striker50_ Yep... In fact, after the update I noticed performance improvements (quicker loading, better routing suggestions, etc). How Mazda knew I installed the map SD card remains a mystery to me. Anyway, they made it available at no $$ cost, so I took it. As I understand things going forward, the license to use the card/feature/service expires after three years - in my case October 2024. The acid test will be to see what their renewal offering/terms/pricing looks like. I like FREE... 😉

For $25 it’s a no-brainer! Truth is, I would get more use out of the card for the speed limit and stop sign recognition functions so excited for that 😄
Correct, I linked other options. I think this video placed way more demand on the small seller than they thought, so I linked another card equivalent (TD2K card for your year) from another seller@@nategelb295
Striker, thanks for doing the heavy lifting on this option for nav for Mazda owners. Based on your research i bought my SD card for my 2023 Mazda CX 5 and it is awesome. I was one who did experience cellphone blackout so my andriod auto was not functioning for directions. I feel much safer now.

Just bought a 2023 "preowned" CX5. Many highways near me have changed in the past couple of years, so I'm planning on using android auto for maps. But I'll get an sd card for those times when my cell service drops out in the mountains.
Thanks for taking the time to comment! Do remember to pay attention to the details when ordering, unless you have this specific model then it should be a breeze. I'll be making other videos showing the Nav more in depth. But wanted this vid to be more digestible

I just happened upon this video. I bought a 2024 CX-5 preferred package, and I didn't even know this was a thing. I clicked the link to buy. It comes tomorrow. We'll see if it works.
Own a 2016 MX-5 Club aka Miata. Bought a Navigation SD card in 2017. The system is a little quirky to use but the Local Mazda dealer address wouldn't show as a possibility on the Navigation. After asking the receptionist at a local restaurant I found out where the Mazda dealer was located. Found out the dealership is new so in 2017 it was a prairie & THAT is why an updated Navigation SD card is needed. I know Mazda has a kit to update the system for Apple Carplay / Android Auto but could be getting a new 2024 MX-5 very soon. 😎 The new SD card with the new maps will be coming to update my system 2017 Navigation maps. Shows why updates are important.
There is no need to purchase a Mazda so card. There is a way to clone the card and that’s what the Amazon sellers are doing. I have backup SD card for both my CX9 and Mazda 3. The year of the car also don’t really matter as the entertainment unit will get firmware updated by the dealer. The newer firmware will scan for the card ID. I have the original Sd card and simply clone the SD card and it works fine. I only use this for backup in case the SD card die so I don’t have to pay ridiculous amount to the dealer.
On 2024 CX-5 with HUD, if you use Apple Maps for navigation ,you will also get turn by turn direction and street names, just not the traffic sign recognition (can confirm at least with a CX-5 Turbo Premium)
Paying the kind of money you do for the Mazda, a card should be part of the package. Buying a navigation card is ridiculous anyway. I voiced that to my Mazda dealer and I lease, my fifth CX-5. I did not have to buy a card. Dealer was gracious and give me one.
Bought my Sd-card on Ali , for 20 euro's , it works great ! Maps and traffics signs also warning of speedcameras ( bought the European version for cx3 2017 ) 😊
The traffic sign recognition in my ‘23 CX-5 Signature is operated by the Forward Sensing Camera as well as the navigation system. So Nav is not required for TSR.
From my understanding what I read in forums, the SD card is included with the top signature trim which is why it is the only trim that is marketed with Navigation from factory. I believe the SD card itself that enables the TSR. It would make sense for Mazda (and more cost effective) to include an SD card with the signature trim, instead of giving it tech exclusive to just the Signature. Of course I may be mistaken, but from a business perspective, companies operate on efficiency usually, instead of exclusivity.
Why do you need traffic sign recognition, can you not see the traffic signs through the windscreen, plus other things that might be going on like other cars, pedestrians, dogs, children, horses, potholes to avoid. Scantily clad young ladies in summer, I might be old, but it does not stop me noticing them, just in case they change their minds ( womans perogotive) and cross the road with out looking. Its called observation of body language, not perving.
@@hastuart9639 "observation of body language, not perving." A creative way of describing an old perv leering at girls young enough to be his granddaughter.
I used the TD2K card since this CX-5 has the 10.25'' but for the smaller screen the BHP1 sounds like it's the right one. I know someone else in the comments said they got one for their MX-5@@kevinw7319
I mean best practice is to download the map of the area through Google maps in advance of your trip, so this doesn't help someone who is prepared. What it does do though is unlock a feature that's already on your car and essentially paywalled, which is really annoying. I have the HUD and I'm looking forward to getting that working with maps as intended. Thanks. I've also read that it's possible to run the Mazda navigation simultaneously with Google maps, so that's worth checking in to see if you can get it to work.
Good point Keep in mind if someone is doing a longer road trip, that is quite an excess amount of maps that would have to be downloaded. And there always is a chance that a phone could break or stop working. I had my phone completely bust when I landed on it on a cycling trip after wiping out. The paywall is crazy though
Like everyone else said, with google maps you can just download the offline version before your trip, so even if no signal you'll be good. Also means you have the most up to date map available. I think if apple car play or android auto was not wireless or not available then ok $25 would be great option, jist dont see a need anymore for these built in gps maps
There are multiple benefits. If you're like me and broke their phone in a biking accident needing to go to a hospital, it is very useful, if someone is tired of plugging their phone in for android auto it is also a good option. Downloading also takes up a lot of storage, and many people may overlook that as it is not a common habit. This is a great option for convenience and peace of mind. It also improves resale value of the vehicle by letting the next buyer know.
I have a 2020 mazda cx 5 & just out of curiosity, i went into my middle console & seen an sd in it, popped it out & its the BHP1 sd card from mazda. Who knew🤷🏾♀️. So i guess you can change your video to include 2020 years as well. 😊
Hey! Thank you for the tip on that SD card, wish we could have learnt about this before, we have the OEM card in our CX5. I don’t know if you use Android Auto but maybe you or someone in the comment section can shed some light about something we can’t work out: the 2023 models are said to be compatible with wireless Android Auto, however, even if we have connected our phone via bluetooth (it works with calls and bt music), it does not recognize the device when trying to start Android Auto… so far we are stuck with the usb cable if we want to use Android Auto.
@@kennyharp4125 Nice! Congrats! We got the 2023 a week before the 2024s came out. Apparently they made changes to the tech so no way for me to know that at the time I made the video
I love me a Mazda, but like BMW with their subscriptions, they like to get you with the extras. Every Mazda comes with navigation but you have to pay for a tiny piece of plastic if you want to unlock it so you can actually use it😅 new automakers are apparently also doing this to save weight but I think it’s just another way for you to spend more money..
This is cool, but it’s such a shame the dealership cards are so expensive. When I bought my Mazda, the salesperson very briefly brought up the navigation and since I had an iPhone they just said I could just use CarPlay. The idea of having offline maps is so cool.
Yup it's fantastic as a back up I didn't even hesitate to get it since it's priced so low. Sometimes the phone isn't pairing or we may not feel like connecting into the cable
@@jimpare7695 Yup and this is a great back up it you're in the middle of no where. You also do not have to plug in your phone if you just want to navigate to somewhere nearby
I have a 2018 that came with an OEM card, clearly outdated. So I went to Amazon and bought the 2022. I don’t believe it’s that recent because I’m in an area where there has been a lot of growth the past few years. So I’m missing a couple of key roads and even highways.
I got a 2023 mazda 3 ,that I think I need this amazing thing .but I have no idea which one that can work for my Mazda.And. I wonder know does it work in other countries? I live in Taiwan. If you get time to answer these questions I'll appreciate that.
In my opinion those built in navigations in cars are useless because many don't connect to internet to receive real time traffic updates and any map changes. Let's say if you are in an area where there is an accident or construction going on, this GPS is not going to know and will lead you straight into it. So the trade off is whether you value the cool heads up display to minimize distraction on the road, or if you value real time traffic. Both have it's own pros and cons of course.
You should be good, I've had similar tint like this for over 15 years. Only gotten stopped once and it was a fix it citation. $25 bucks, and then you could always re-apply it after showing police you removed it. Only time I got stopped was in 2011
Any suggestions for how to source Australian Mazda Maps please? I have the 2022 CX-5 GT SP. Thank you in advance. Great video that has really got me thinking.
Instead, assuming your phone's data plan can stand it and your Mazda Infotainment kit has built-in Apple Car Play (or Android Auto), I suggest getting a CP/AA dongle that lets you work wireless. The CP/AA gadget costs about the same as the bootleg Mazda Maps SD and has tons more flexibility (Waze w/traffic, Pandora, iHeart Radio, Messages, Phone, etc). Plus, it does NOT require a subscription that expires, like Mazda Maps. When I bought my 2021 CX-5 GTR, I beavered around and took the bootleg Mazda Maps route. The SD I bought was Mazda car model and trim level specific. Anyway, at first I was afraid it might void my warranty, but in the end, everything worked out OK. In fact, Sirius Radio offers a traffic add-on that works well with the Mazda Map set-up. Still, after lots of fussing around, I find the Mazda Map SD/radio set-up too restrictive for my taste. As such, next year when my Maps subscription expires... if asked to renew, I plan to pass in favor of wireless Car Play, or Android Auto. My 2 cents... M 😁
Oh wow I think you're the first person that has gotten the subscription. As for the trim specific I believe that is made up marketing since the cards work for all trims. The wireless dongle is true. I have since seen them pop up all over tiktok and have considered trying it out, but for now there's no immediate need. Thanks for the 2 cents!
Thanks for this info. I read some comments in online forums that Mazda can somehow brick/blacklist your VIN from future updates for having an aftermarket SD card installed. Has anyone seen this happen and could they do that? I don't know if that's true or just b.s. comments. I wouldn't want to risk future updates to the car's computer for other reasons.
I would take it with a grain of salt. What I understood is that the SD Card "burns" to your VIN after 50 miles of driving, so that you're not sharing the card with other cars. I personally don't care for the maps to be constantly updated, if even possible at this point with the aftermarket method. I have a 2013 Accord and those 2013 maps show everything I would need as a back up measure. For daily traffic navigating, I use Google maps anyway
Thanks for this! Mazda is crazy to charge $450 for an SD card! Question: On your Amazon affiliate store, you show SD cards for 2023 and also 2024. Are you saying in your video, that these won't work in my Mazda CX-5 because they aren't actual Mazda SD cards?
I have a 2018 3 with navigation, there is a problem with some oem sd cards. They fail in colder temperatures, shutting off the whole display. It starts of in really cold, like-20c but gradually gets so bad it shuts off at 5c. The only solution is to replace it or remove it. Please, if your selling used cards, make sure they aren’t defective.
in Aliexpress will be 17$...and will work on any Mazda with navigation, need to chose your rigon only..and it will work for 3 years free update..then need to buy new one
Great video! I just need to know one thing…do you need to keep the card in for navigation to work? Im ok with it reading data from the card but not ok with actually installing software, if that makes sense.

Yeah, my guess is Mazda wants to rake in money through people that pay for "official" map updates. I'm super thankful there's a cheap alternative from aftermarket.
Even without a HUD, it makes so much sense for such a low price to get navigation (but not the crazy dealer price)
I want to test more things like how it works with voice commands and Android auto, etc.
My Honda Accord is a 2013 for example, and Honda still wants me to pay $150 to update the maps for the GPS 😂 WITH A CD! That said, even those 10 year old maps show 99% of all roads I've ever driven on

Aftermarket is more than enough 👍
Wish I had your expertise when I first purchased my Mazda. I really wanted the built in Navigation!

@@LinuxIsBeter Nice!! Great to hear stories like this
The traffic sign recognition in my ‘23 CX-5 Signature is operated by the Forward Sensing Camera as well as the navigation system.
@@chrome2yourdome It's interesting how much they can charge.
Nav is nice, but I also like how Mazda shows the compass and elevation info. Can I got back to that screen with nav maps installed?
I believe so. I'll do a video showing the settings and talking about what you brought up

Ok. Ty
Useless implies there's no value whatsoever which would be inaccurate to say

I reached out to a guy that does a lot of our family cars. He is mobile and came with a team of 3, so they knocked it out in like 45 minutes it was quite impressive.
I believe it was $480, and no tint on the front 2 windows is technically legal, but it is best to check with your state or region since tint laws vary by area.
That said, it is great and keeps the car cooler than other tint films
@Striker50_ thanks!

i never update my 2016.5 cx5, and went on a trip around 2018-2019 winter i forgot exact year. the NAV system for Montreal QC sucks when they blocked a bridge crossing for maintenance, i have no idea how to find another route in its NAV. i have to use use google map XD
Yup that is the downside with a lot of car navigations, they are not live time, so it does not show construction, and closures.
Google Maps is always great
Great video, and timely. Any input on the 2025 CX 5? Just bought a no frills, base level GS and want to try this on it. Picking it up Dec 20th. Thanks.
@@GordRobinson-g6p are you in the US?
@@Striker50_ Canada
@@GordRobinson-g6p it should be the KMV6 card
FYI, my 2024 Mazda 3 (Canada) shows turn-by-turn directions in the heads-up display when using Apple Maps with Apple CarPlay (not Google Maps, but probably Google Maps works with AndroidAuto.)
Nice. I got this & made vid 1 week before 2024s came out.
I had a few people mention it works on the HUD, but no one has commented with Google Maps and Android auto
@@Striker50_ Wonder if maybe it's only a 2024 thing. I have the 2024 CX-5 Turbo Premium and can confirm that my HUD shows turn by turn directions using Google Maps and android auto.
@@MrDreese93 it may be possible. I tested on the 2023 and it does not do that
I have a 2023 Mazda CX5 and have android auto with Google maps and there is no traffic recognition or any turn-by-turn directions
@@yvonnegalletta3278 Do you have the SD card? That's what will allow traffic sign recognition
Hi. Thanks for sharing this information and help other Mazda users to save some money. May I ask you, I have the CX-5 2021 with Nav. System and I also have the Mazda3 2018 with no nav. system. Do you think I can use the same card from the CX-5 on the Mazda3? Thanks.
@@MiguelFigueroa The 2021 CX-5 uses the TD2k card because of the 10.25" screen
The 2018 Mazda 3 uses the BhP1 card because it has the smaller 8" screen I believe
@@MiguelFigueroa also, keep in mind that the SD card saves to the specific vehicle that you're using it on so you can't transfer it to other vehicles if that is what you're trying to do
Make sure you check your included owners manual case. You might have a SD card in there.
@@michaelmolina5742 never hurts to check but usually only the top trim receives the SD card
Why doesnt your steering wheel have the bottom cut out? I noticed others are cut out and some are not why is that? Anyways thanks for the maps video.
I believe it depends on the year that's why
very very useful video, thank you so much! just want to know an aftermarket SD card will not have any negative effects on my new Mazda car warranty, right?
Nope nothing I have heard or read about that happening
@@Striker50_ Great! Thank you so much! I will buy one to explore the navigation of Mazda, but it seems the kmv6 on Amazon for 2024 mazda is about $39, more expensive than the old version
@@cshaocn Yes, I assume maybe because the other card has been out for years now it's cheaper. The KMV6 card is probably harder to find since it's for the newer Mazdas there aren't as many of them
@@Striker50_ agree, thank you!

I ordered a card on Amazon for my 2024 CX-5 Preferred, and it didn't work.
Did you get the KV6M card? I've had a few people comment say that's the one that works for the 2024 Cx-5. My guess is because of the updated wireless Carplay
hi, want to know my car "2022 CX-5 2.5 S PP AWD" ,which one is for me, cuz I check the link and the item u mentioned in the video seems already unavailable, so for now which one is better for me? bty I'm in us. Thx!
the screen is 10.25inches
@@ninghao8742 Nice thanks for mentioning the screen size! The TD2K should be the card for you, I linked a new one since the previous one most likely sold out
About 2 yrs ago I bought the Mazda card from a Mazda dealership. It has now quit working, but I don't understand why they want to charge me full price for a replacement because basically I've paid for the use of the data on it, so they should only be able to legally and ethically want to charge me what a blank SD card costs.
Corporations are headless machines that are not capable of helping people on one-off situations like this. Bummer, but an aftermarket option may be a better solution while not 100% up to date like a dealer one
Thanks for the great info. So now my AUTO Android Google Maps is not working on my 2023 CX5 for some reason. I wish I could use the SD card.
@@ipclifton1 Hmm, do you have the SD card already?
@@Striker50_ I never received one from the dealer. I will buy one from Amazon soon. You are a lifesaver!
Thnx for the info.....Do you also know how to set the heated seats and steering wheel with remote start on a cx5 2024...i know there is a secret menu on de cx5 by pressing the star*, music and volume button at the same time for around 3seconds to get in to it, but don't know how to operate it. Tnx in advance 🙂
Absolutely! As for the hidden feature, I am not familiar with it. Perhaps the owners manual has some information on it. I have wanted to look through the owners manual to learn all of those things but its like 600 pages
Works on my 2023 cx30. The only issue is when I try to speak an address to navigate to , it doesn’t understand.
Try this: Speak very specific commands. Notice when you hold the button it gives specific phrases to use on the screen. I was having this issue too until I figured out how to phrase it
I purchased 1 sd card, thank you.
Awesome to hear hopefully it works well for you 👍
I notice the card you holding has some names of countries listed in it does it mean it can only in the countries listed on it?
I got my car CX5 2025 in United Arab Emirates when I checked with a dealer, they said they don't provide SD card but when I checked with Amazon it says US Canada only can I still buy it and download it in my car oh so it seems that it only works if you have an apple phone not an Android system
I would be curious to know if it is true in the US with Android.
Thanks for sharing and congrats on the 2025!
