Here's Why I am Selling My 2018 Tesla Model S 100D After Owning It For Only Two Months!

  • I thought this 2018 Tesla Model S 100D would be a good road tripper. It has range of about 275 miles on the highway, but the charging speeds are just not what I thought they would be. I have learned that sometimes in life when you make mistakes, you need to just trade out of them quickly and move on. So, this is exactly what I am doing. I am really excited about buying a 2021 Refresh Tesla Model S after finding the right piece at the right price from Carmax. Watch this video for a bit more of an explanation, along with the trade in process/dollar amount that Carmax is willing to give me.

    Goodness! More musical chairs with your EVs! Well… I was one who would have kept the Ioniq 5, but I will agree that any EV should have a rated range of 300+ miles. It's not that I've ever driven that far on a charge, the most has been 200 miles, but… having an extra "buffer" with the recommended 80% charge, gives peace-of-mind when and if you hit inclement weather, strong headwinds, steep climbs to a higher elevation, etc. Good luck getting your next "pony"!

      Charging network reliability And availability is key over range. Just as long as the range is over 200 miles. We took a long road trip from New Jersey to Saint Augustine Florida in a 2019 Tesla standard range plus no issues and every stop was about 15 to 20 minutes to charge to the next location. Auto pilot was also a big benefit and they driving experience less stressful

  • @scottarseneault6601
    @scottarseneault6601 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Hey Dave, this is a vehicle that once had FSD through subscription. The subscription is no longer active and that’s why under autopilot, it says auto pilot only, not Full self driving capability either package included or subscription. Once the subscription ends, where it would say full self driving capability subscription, it then reverts back to listing autopilot only. If it were purchased it would list Full Self Driving capability, package included. Tesla does not remove the most recent version of software, and that is why FSD beta is still listed. I was interested in one that was listed in the same way and I inquired about it with Tesla and that’s what they told me. Thank you to you and Conner for the great videos. By the way, just a thought but maybe it might be best to get a quote for a trade-in before they know you’re interested in a particular vehicle. Once they know you’re interested in a vehicle, then they can offer you significantly less than anyone else due to the tax savings you will receive by trading your vehicle in with them.

    You need to change your name to Dealin' Dave. I am amazed at how many cars you have owned since you began making videos with the VW id4's. I enjoyed hearing your reasoning on the changes in each car. Logical in each choice moving to the next vehicle. I am not ready for full EV due to the range as well. My 2013 Audi Q5 ICE range was 555 miles. My 2021 Audi Q5 hybrid with 14.1Kw battery has an electric range of 27 miles and the ICE range is 445 miles. During the pandemic we drove locally and my average is 83 MPG. After a road 1000 mile trip the mileage dropped to 69 MPG. I have the same questions about the value of car as I leased it. The place where I bought is selling my car used for the 5K less than the MSRP. I am leaning towards buy the car after the lease ends BUT with this video I have learned a lot about selling and buying from Carvana. Thanks Dave for making this really informative video. • @dconner9
      @dconner9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have owned the X. Prefer the model S even though it’s lower. No issue with headroom on either. B pillar on S is tight to the steering wheel so I set an exit mode on steering wheel to push the wheel all the way to the dash to provide more room entering and exiting. Falcon wing doors are a cool party trick, but not practical to live with for my life style. I like to quickly throw my brief case in the back seat each morning on my commute and the X just takes too long. Plus, where I park at work is tight, and as good as those doors are tight to the car when opening, I get stress each time. Simply put: they are just over engineered. The S styling is classic and timeless. The X looks odd to me. Always has. Model S also has huge room in it when you fold down the rear seats, plus better range. For me, I choose the S

    Most states you will *not* lose the sales tax credit. You just need a sales tax affidavit when going to the DMV to prove the price of the car you sold. Dealers don't have a special market when it comes to sales tax credit.
    Also, even Model 3s in many cases only get a charge rate of around 170kw at v2 and v3 chargers. Getting a newer Model S won't get you a faster charge at most supercharger stops

    Dave, I recently posted a reply to one of your other videos when you bought your Tesla Model S 100D how after owning it for 4 years I had just traded in my 2018 Tesla Model S 75D for a 2023 Genesis GV60 Performance (probably the most modern and technologically advanced EV today in my opinion!) like your wife bought and which you made a number of glowing video reviews about. Among the reasons I decided to part with my Model S was all the broken Tesla promises made over 4 years of owning it about getting new feature upgrades (very few), Full Self Driving (FSD) which I paid for but NEVER got the "invitation" to download the FSD "Beta" software even after getting the V. 3.0 Autopilot (AP) computer upgrade, my screwed up SiriusXM radio which Tesla could never fix AND lastly and just as importantly the Supercharger charging times were just taking impossibly longer and longer! Over the last 4 years my Tesla has apparently been purposely "slowed down" while charging on Superchargers. It's been rumored that Tesla has purposely been slowing down fast DC charging on software updates on older Teslas due to possible fire concerns with these "older" Model S chassis. This summer before I traded it in, it was now taking 45-60+ minutes or more to "fast charge" my Tesla from 20% to 80%. The Hyundai designed E-GMP platform in my new Genesis GV60 has the newest 800V electrical architecture (like that found in Porsche and Audi), different battery chemistry and a better charging taper once SOC exceeds 80%, which compared to the ~360V/380V/400V architecture of Tesla (and mostly every other EV brand) the GV60 offers more than TWICE the charging speed when connected to the fastest 350KW Electrify America chargers (and even the regular EA 150KW chargers...). In fact when I fast charged my GV60 the first time, I charged from 30% to 80% in just 16 minutes flat! And subsequent charging visits adding 35-40 KW 's (a "half tank") are usually under 20 minutes as well so I get your point completely how your new "old" Tesla Model S 100D was adding HOURS to charging on trips (like your trips back and forth from CT to FL) was unacceptable! Good luck with your new 2021 Model S which you'll be able to charge much faster on your trips, especially on V3 Superchargers (except I HATE that fcuken YOKE!). Let us know how you make out 🙂.

    I was laughing when you were at Carmax thinking those customer cars were cars for sale. Carmax always has packed lots of vehicles for sale. The reason your offer was less with them was most likely because they don't sell Teslas with over 50k miles yet. They're cautious with the EVs right now so they offered you a number basically for them to sell it at an auction. Companies like Carvana and Vroom sell higher mileage so they have margins to support a higher initial offer.

      This car will not have FSD, it was a subscription car. That shows the same on our car. We subscribed the. When unsubscribed the software stayed in place though we can not use it unless we purchase or resubscribe.

    I’m leaning more towards the car having FSD; the beta software will probably be removed when you purchase the car. I have had FSD (paid in full) and FSD subscription, from what I remember FSD with the subscription would say that in that menu. Like it expired or renews on such and such date. Congrats!

    Hi Dave nice video, but I guess you yourself a tesla with a so called single charge, and not the double charger, so I think that is why it is so. And the other thing is, the dealer you bought it from, i must say, has absolutely no idea of Teslas, you live in CT make contact with Now you know in MA or rich rebuild in NH they would no more about when it comes to buying a pre owned Tesla.

    Huge depreciation on a 2018 model s. Before you buy the 2021 get car max to tell you what they will give you for it before you buy it.
    We are nearly in 2023 lol and then they will say It is a 2 yrs old car and and only giving you 52k for a 3 yrs old car.
    You done well buying latest models and flipping them but think you will take a bath on these 2 model s. You playing with tax credit logic but lost 10k on models s in less than 8 weeks.

      @@dconner9 love channel dave and youn family
      Yes got the tax logic and I'm British
      Still lost 10k on car in less than 2 months as you could have traded it at higher offer retailerr and not buy that model s.
      You would still have tax bennefit and buying another high mile model s is asking for more depreciation.
      You get my logic .. you bought var for 62 and sell it for 52 8 weeks later.
      The 55 and 56 k offers you had would also have same tax bennefit if you bought a car from them.
      There are loads of tesla channels and what made your channel great was covering the newer cars.
      Like your channel and just think this not a great trade financially and in content.
      You do you brother, just after taking a 10k hit and then buying another refresh version will have same result.
      Liked your plaid video on kyles car but how much model s content is there left.
      Your money and your choice and your channel.
      Have a great sunday.

      The battery is not going bad. He is just not happy with the speed this model charges at. That information is available before you purchase however he didn’t think it would bother him as much until he owned it and drove it on a long trip. He is willing to spend more to get what he wants and it will charge faster.
