Tesla's new Plaid powertrain will allow the family sedan to retain it's insane acceleration from 100-200mph so it'll be a sure game over for supercars even in a full mile race. Model S's current design is gearless, which limits top speed considerably for the purposes of quarter-mile drag races, but Tesla is solving that by adding a third motor which will increase efficiency, max speed, acceleration and torque for less than half of the extra weight of a gearbox.

Tesla's new Plaid powertrain will allow the family sedan to retain it's insane acceleration from 100-200mph so it'll be a sure game over for supercars even in a full mile race. Model S's current design is gearless, which limits top speed considerably for the purposes of quarter-mile drag races, but Tesla is solving that by adding a third motor which will increase efficiency, max speed, acceleration and torque for less than half of the extra weight of a gearbox.
