  • The Surface Book 3 has landed in the UK and now I want to provide my thoughts about this unique 13.5" laptop. I've thrown in some GTX 1650 Max-Q gaming for good measure.

    00:00:15 - Specs
    00:00:48 - Design, ports and screen detach
    00:02:16 - Keyboard, battery and trackpad

    [Shadow of the Tomb Raider 60fps Game Settings]
    Resolution: 1600x1200
    Texture Quality: Normal
    Filtering: Trilinear
    Shadow: Low
    Ambient: Off
    Depth: Normal
    Detail Level: Low

    Bloom: Off
    Motion Blur: Off
    Screen Space Contact Shadows: Off
    Pure Hair: Low
    Lens Flares: On
    Screen Effects: On
    [Forza Horizon 4 60fps Game Settings]
    Resolution: 1620x1080
    Everything set to Off/Low except for Windscreen, World Car Detail, Terrain Quality and Lens Effects set to Medium.
    [Extra Tip!]
    I know Windows 10 game mode is supposed to improve performance but like with many other users experience, turning this off gave me far less dips below 60fps (including battery power). Anyone should try this regardless of system! Worth a shot!
    Hope you are well and staying safe! Any questions, hit me up in the comments!

    Excellent review mate! I rarely find a reviewer like yourself that truly understands this sb3 is a highly versatile all-in-1 device and it being a jack of many trades, it's not realistic to expect that the performance will be better than a iPad , gaming laptop and or as light as a office productivity ultrabook .
    I had exact same 13.5" version as well. Fits my needs perfectly. (office productivity, moderate gaming , watching movies , scribble some notes using pen.) And the fans are really quiet even when you are gaming.
    Only drawbacks are
    1. They disabled cpu undervolting.
    2. No thunderbolt 3 on USB C
    3. Sd card slot should allow inserted card to only protude by 25% out of chassis instead of half.
    4.speakers lack bass.
    5. No HDMI port out despite there's a keybord &gpu base..

    Genuinely great review! Loads of detail which other reviews wouldn’t go into! Keep it up! I have a omen gaming laptop but was looking for a work orientated/productivity machine and this seems like a good solution to my issues... Thanks for this G!

    Gonna be an engineer student and with this being a tablet and a laptop, I can take notes and play some games in my free time. There are compromises as you said but I think it’s a worth investment for school.

    I have seen plenty reviews that compare this device to other laptops and never to other 2in1's. Anyway, your review was brilliant!! Here in the US we didn't get the pen, I got the 15" i7 1tb with 1660ti and 32gb ram. I'm a content creator and developer and got this as an upgrade from an SB2.

      hi - do you use it in tablet mode often? Seems slightly large and awkward yet it is light and gives the real estate needed for using a pen.

    I want to buy this to edit and lightly game. I'm still doing 1080p footage but I thought I might want to do some 4k. Is it capable of editing some 4k footage? I also travel alot is the 13.5 a good size?

    Good video. At the end 14:15 are you saying you get 15% more or _less_ with the surface book than a with traditional laptop with the same spec?

    • @TheTechKnowG
      @TheTechKnowG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately 15% less. If you look at benchmarks for other laptops with a 1650 Max-Q, the SB3 doesn't perform as well but the gap can vary between applications! Sometimes on par, sometimes 15% slower!

      @@TheTechKnowG Is that down to the systems low electrical power? The gpu is quite cool separated from the rest of he system is it not?

    • @88g
      @88g 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jackjude Yeah, the overall TDP (CPU and GPU) contributes to this, maybe to even avoid the backlash on the SB2 with its inability to charge the battery at full pelt when plugged in (performance base). Note that the GPU fan is very quiet at load also. Thanks for your comments.

    hook up for those emulators and ROMs lol. Also, is this ideal for editing videos (for youtube)?

    • @TheTechKnowG
      @TheTechKnowG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for commenting! Check out my newer Book 3 video covering some emulation if you like! Yes you can edit 1080p with no problem. 4K is where the passively cooled i7 will struggle a bit but if you keep the playback resolution to 1/4 it will become more usable but yes very much capable of being your video editing workstation

    Best review I have seen so far, thank you. I have a question about the thermals. I mean the 13 inch version doesn't have a fan in a tablet portion, so does it get too hot.?
    I am planning to buy one but I am really worried about overheating.

    • @justing600
      @justing600 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have the same SB3 config. The screen/back of the tablet does get very warm to the touch if you're pushing it in laptop mode as it can temporarily turbo boost up to 25W on battery and 39W (!) if charging, but because it's just the screen you don't feel that heat at all on your lap. The CPU can actually somehow maintain a 15W load continuously at around 75C under a stress test, which compared to competition is actually excellent load temps. Even more so when you consider there's no fan on it. When you use the tablet detached, it does limit the turbo boost on the CPU more so the case does not heat up as much as it does in laptop mode, but it can still pull 15W continuously and still does get warm to the touch if you're pushing it and not just browsing the web or watching youtube.

      @TheTechKnowG  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Justin is right on the mark - great info. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the i7's performance and thermals given no fan. It doesn't get uncomfortable to hold either.

    Fantastic machine, but the volume is too too low even for normal voice using Zoom or Skype. MS really needs to address this! They did a much better on Surface Book 2 relative to the volume.

    At what resolution were the games running? Because I want to plug the surface 3 13.5 to my 1440p monitor. Will it perform well?

    • @TheTechKnowG
      @TheTechKnowG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can but don't expect much at native resolution. All my settings for those games are in the description (i.e Forza was at 1080p low settings). Recent AAA gaming at 1440p requires quite a bit of horsepower that this unit can't deliver.

    Is the 15 inch worth for gaming? I keep hearing smash talk about its performance. But I really like the slim factor, detacble tablet aspect, high quality build and excellent screen quality. I want to game also bit don’t know if I am gonna be dissatisfied

    • @TheTechKnowG
      @TheTechKnowG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Intel in here is not brilliant compared to AMD's offerings (which are slim pickings in laptops I know - hoping this will change in 2021) but form factor wise, I couldn't agree with you more, it is so unique. Keyboard, screen, touchpad are all fantastic. The 15" is going to perform better thanks to the fan (not to mention the better GTX if you opt for that variant). Price is not competitive - try find a deal.

      In the screen on the 13", no it doesn't! It probably should though as the same i7 in the 15" version does. Shame really.
