Having used my Surface Book since 2016, I can tell you that is still my do-everything device... (obviously except being a phone)... But yeah it is my poor's-man Gaming Rig, it is my main work device for 3D design, graphic design, etc.. it is my main entertainment device (netflix, youtube, etc)... I even took a couple of class courses on it. This is the only device that gives me unmatched versatility for conceiving ideas, sketching, then designing and modeling....
This has been the comment I've been looking for. I've been debating between the Macbook Pro and the Surface Book for pretty much all the reasons you said.
@@faahym what's your background? And what do you expect to do with either of those devices?... As an example, I am a mechanical engineer but now I mostly work as an industrial designer and graphic designer (self taught). I can run SolidWorks 2017 ok with small assemblies (using the dGPU), with older versions I was able to run solidworks with intel's integrated gpu. I occasionally draw and sketch in Sketchbook, nice enough to present design ideas, but not the best for say, an illustrator. Lastly, I play games but limited to 720p or 1080p in low settings for titles usually older than 2016... (Dying Light, Alien Isolation, Outlast 2, etc) Obviously the Surface Book 3 would be more than capable for all the things I listed, but I still wanted to make this remark since you might find yourself in a similar position 4~5 years down the road. All in all is a great device if you like Windows and if you know you can at least try to explore its different use cases. I still detach my display for reading, watching TH-cam or Netflix, but I know people that uses the SB like a regular laptop and that is a bit of a waste of engineering and the investment on this device.
Been looking for this type of comment also. I'm also a mechanical engineer and going back to grad school so most of my note taking needs a pen for writing out extensive equations with all sorts of greek letters. I would undoubtedly also be using this for entertainment and some casual gaming (Civ, maybe Legend of Zelda, Hearthstone, etc). I can't find anything that has the versatility and well-roundedness of this machine.
I've been using the Surface Book 2 since it came out. Its gone through countless airplane trips and daily use. It is the best laptop I've owned and has been tremendously reliable. It as plenty of power. Rendering Blender you say, fine, render things on the go or the odd small project. But if you're using blender as a professional I hope you have a proper workstation for that. My feet have rested on this tucked under airplane seats in front of me for years. It literally has dents in the case from being dropped over the years. Still it runs 100%. I'll probably hang on to this until the Surface Book 4 comes along.
I was lucky enough to get the original Surface Book halfway through university, and it’s still in good shape now. At the time it completely changed how I worked, with handwritten notes being Ctrl+f searchable in One Note and no more carrying paper around for problem sheets was incredible. Having the pen to write down maths equations and still having the power to run Inventor or OpticStudio interactively is something I still don’t see many laptops doing well. Also used the screen release several times a day for ~5 years now, and it’s still working fine. Completely recommended if you can stomach the price.
Something interesting I noticed, I just came from watching his iPad Pro Magic Keyboard video, in that video he rounded down the $1477 price to 1400 dollars, BUT in this video he rounded UP the price from 3353 to 3400 dollars. I wonder why.
@@noname_6423 not a problem as much as it takes away from an unbiased critical review. Barely the video started and he compared it to Apple and how much Apple is better. Personally, I love the design simply because it works. Yes, you can probably find it possible to do tweaks to the design, but there is frankly so much power in this laptop (not at all like a desktop, but that also another entity all together). Besides, keep in mind that you can only pack so many features into a laptop before things like weight starts to become an issue.
Microsoft should go for AMD here...I was kinda expecting it after their pretty public partnership almost everywhere and last year’s special SoC for the Surface Laptop...
I was genuinely concerned with your comment and thought you might have had a stroke and then watched the video. I should stop looking at comments before finishing the video.

Well apple literally doesn't have any competition since no one has Mac os. Whereas you can get powerhouses/mid level workstation at the price of surface book. Microsoft is competiting against every other laptop manufacturer.
I still think original MBA design still holds water!!!! Fight me!!! Lol seriously tho, some designs look good for 2 yrs and some look good for 20 yrs, the macbooks imo falls into the latter bucket
I'm still using the first surfacebook, and while it does have its problems, I don't regret getting it. Long battery life, being able to draw with a pen on the screen, even able to detach it, and an actual GPU that is usable makes it really great IMO. If I could make one change, I'd improve on the monitor hinge. It would be a lot better if it could go 180 degree so you can put it securely on the desk without turning it around via detaching. The screen is just a bit too wobbly to leave the base attached while drawing more than a quick sketch.
Sabita Kumari I know right? CPU too weak compared to competitors, but need a 15W chip? Hmmmmm if only an 8 core 16 thread 15W CPU existed... Are they just too lazy to design a second motherboard?
Microsoft's inclusion of a 1080p webcam is looking prescient right now as pretty much all business meetings over the past 4 months have moved to online video / conference calls.

@@mguanipa2 It's a halo device it isn't meant to be super competitive as Microsoft does not want to anger their third party hardware creators. It is meant to show what quality a windows device should at least be made to.
It’s an engineering marvel. I use my 13” SB2 for writing and it’s been a joy. My biggest grievance is the sometimes hit-and-miss nature of Windows Hello. Sometimes it’s very slow or just doesn’t recognize me.
Agreed for design but how many times MacBook changed design or iphone, in companies thought if a design working continue with it until they are outdated.
I kinda forgive this for having big bezels because this IS also a tablet, you don’t wanna have no way to hold it. But Microsoft does need to redesign the device as a whole, and also Intel needs to find a way to boost their U processors with more cores. AMD does it, why can’t intel...
Moses Jonson the CPU is stored in the top half of the Surface Book, and to add to that it’s completely fanless on the top. There isn’t enough thermal capacity to support an H series chip on the tablet. Their best bet if intel doesn’t want to wake up would be to go AMD, which IDK why they haven’t fully yet it’s not like they have Thunderbolt...
super review... you hit all my needed bullet points! An overlooked point is of you detach the saucer section the battery life is very short, 2-3hrs...but if you just flip the display around into attached display tablet config you have the full 12hr or so battery life. It's heavier in that config but for me it's a difference maker. Thanks for the very helpful video!
I think the best way to game on a surface book is by playing on an external monitor, while also turning off the SB's display so that the heat from the LCD is no longer present. I get fairly decent temps doing that.
I recently got a surface pro 7 and i love it, its exactly what i need from a device - a tablet with a stand, and a laptop if i need it to be AND it barely takes up any space. However, i dont see the point of surface book products. Its inbetween surface pro and surface laptop, and isnt really better than anything. Its just weird. Honestly, i think that microsoft should have made the laptop attachment available as a standalone device for surface pro, so you could use either the cover keyboard or the surface book thing if you need more power
4:00 that pen latency is so bad compared to the iPad Pro and its 120Hz display! I remember closer to when the Surface Book line originally launched it was just such a unique and exciting new product, but now it feels like Microsoft has more or less abandoned it. Hope they’ll come out with a redesign soon that fixes its issues and makes it more exciting again.

I believe he meant people that need a dedicated tablet, without any of the weight of a 2-in-1. The tablet portion of the Surface Book is significantly lighter.
@linus you should start benchmarking multiparty teams calls with webcam usage. These are standard issue at my company and if you do a 5 person teams call... within 10 minutes they overheat and start freezing pausing and cams cut out. In a time of remote work, the inability to run a video conference call is a dealbreaker. We don’t have this problem with MacBook airs strangely enough.
How amazing it is that none of the reviews mention that in past these surface devices had screen losing full or partial touch. I had surface book 1 then 2 both had it. Surface pro 6 I had had the same problem a part of screen doesn’t respond to touch.

(Dying Light, Alien Isolation, Outlast 2, etc)
Obviously the Surface Book 3 would be more than capable for all the things I listed, but I still wanted to make this remark since you might find yourself in a similar position 4~5 years down the road.
I can't find anything that has the versatility and well-roundedness of this machine.

in a week from now, "I was WRONG about the Surface Book 3"
isnt it good?
I've been using the Surface Book 2 since it came out. Its gone through countless airplane trips and daily use. It is the best laptop I've owned and has been tremendously reliable. It as plenty of power. Rendering Blender you say, fine, render things on the go or the odd small project. But if you're using blender as a professional I hope you have a proper workstation for that. My feet have rested on this tucked under airplane seats in front of me for years. It literally has dents in the case from being dropped over the years. Still it runs 100%. I'll probably hang on to this until the Surface Book 4 comes along.

Nice comment bro. Not stolen or anything.
Because he is biased towards Apple 🤷♀️
@@noname_6423 not a problem as much as it takes away from an unbiased critical review. Barely the video started and he compared it to Apple and how much Apple is better. Which is why I prefer Apple’s approach to phone bezels
The thing is the XPS 15 nd 17 are offering extremely thin bezels without any chin.
8:59 the moment Linus showered some love
Personally, I love the design simply because it works. Yes, you can probably find it possible to do tweaks to the design, but there is frankly so much power in this laptop (not at all like a desktop, but that also another entity all together).
Besides, keep in mind that you can only pack so many features into a laptop before things like weight starts to become an issue.
Microsoft should go for AMD here...I was kinda expecting it after their pretty public partnership almost everywhere and last year’s special SoC for the Surface Laptop...
they have the surface laptop 3 with AMD. I think they had to provide something with intel also.
Same. The APUs I think would be a simpler match than the current Intel/Nvidia setup.
the book should just be intel/nvidia or amd/nvidia, still has the charm of the surface book
Amd's run a bit hot i think need to wait a few more times for them to optimise
The opening is what sold me. 😂
I personally like the Surface. My buddy has had his for over 5 years and it’s a great tool for a digital work flow.

Well apple literally doesn't have any competition since no one has Mac os. Whereas you can get powerhouses/mid level workstation at the price of surface book. Microsoft is competiting against every other laptop manufacturer.
@@ojasthengadi9681 and anyway apple usually has some pretty solid designs on their laptops outside of I/O
Not really, all the Apple fans think the 2016-2019 MacBook Pros has a flawed design.

After using a SB2 daily for a long time its really amazing. It just does everything really well
I think everyone can agree it's not a bad laptop, it's just the value is debatable now
@@mguanipa2 It's a halo device it isn't meant to be super competitive as Microsoft does not want to anger their third party hardware creators. It is meant to show what quality a windows device should at least be made to.
Exactly, that's why Surface exist, to wake up third party manufacturers from making crappy hardware.
Microsoft need to have a variant with ryzen in there and they'll be golden
It’s an engineering marvel.
I use my 13” SB2 for writing and it’s been a joy. My biggest grievance is the sometimes hit-and-miss nature of Windows Hello. Sometimes it’s very slow or just doesn’t recognize me.
Agreed for design but how many times MacBook changed design or iphone, in companies thought if a design working continue with it until they are outdated.
"Who do you think you are Microsoft, Intel?" good one!
I kinda forgive this for having big bezels because this IS also a tablet, you don’t wanna have no way to hold it.
But Microsoft does need to redesign the device as a whole, and also Intel needs to find a way to boost their U processors with more cores. AMD does it, why can’t intel...
why doesn't msft use the intel H processors branch instead of the U processors
Thanks for the very helpful video!
wth the surface book was released 5 years ago? I thought it was like 2-3 years

I think the best way to game on a surface book is by playing on an external monitor, while also turning off the SB's display so that the heat from the LCD is no longer present. I get fairly decent temps doing that.
Everyone Gangsta till Linus use the “well yes but actually no”
I recently got a surface pro 7 and i love it, its exactly what i need from a device - a tablet with a stand, and a laptop if i need it to be AND it barely takes up any space.
Love this review especially when you guys use practical examples like programs and games that would be good on a specific model.
