What's most upsetting about Surface gaming, is the fact that people don't bother to make custom resolutions of 1920x1280. That way there's no stretching, and you get the full picture without black bars.
My old XPS 15 used to do the 'ignore the GPU' dance sometimes, I think a BIOS update fixed it

Great review and completely mirrors my testing, FPS and Temps, of both the GPU and CPU for GTA V and the Witcher 3. Curious to get your thoughts as to why 100C which happens quite a lot doesn't concern you. Someone in Reddit said that is normal for Intel as it's designed to handle that and also says Apple does the same thing, but wanted to get your thoughts as well.

90°c+ your computer is gonna last like a year or two max.
what would you do to avoid it?
90 is ok.. !00 is not. I am so glad my aorus x5 v8 thermal throttles at 90, no higher (sometimes even 88). They wanted longevity more than that last FPS. I still get 4.1ghz on all 6 cores (8850H) under 100% load without thermal throttle, so I am very happy with that (as that's actually a small overclock, 4ghz on all cores is the stock turbo for that cpu). It can get a bit noisy but the game speaker drowns it out.
I will say, my macbook pro 2014 haswell, that is still working today, is always in the high 90's under load.. so.. I will say i expect it to just explode one day but hasn't happened yet.
I plan to repaste the gigabyte with kryonaut and hopefully that will give me even better temps. Absolutely no way I would consider this surface for the price and ridiculous thermals.
Anything since Skylake can handle 130 C at the hottest spots on the die, which are usually about 30 degrees hotter than the average on the silicon. That's why processors throttle at 100 degrees celsius, which - according to intel - is perfectly safe. The deal with the Surface Books though is that the components close to the CPU can't handle those temps, which is why many of the 2-series keep on failing.
When you said the GPU wouldn’t engage it’s because they still have the same problem form the second one where the GPU would disappear.

It wasn’t 100C all the time. I don’t have any concerns. That’s a safe limit
100 degrees is not normal and will cause damage. No cpu should run at 100 degrees when playing games, maybe only when rendering something in 4k
I would love to get the surface studio 3 if it comes out it’s looks so clean and would look good in my office but there 4K$ fully maxed out

Regarding the 1080p cropping issues - have you tried using the custom resolution utility? On my 13" Surface Book 2 I use a resolution of 1504*1000 and it works a treat for most games.

I dunno man, the 15w cpu ramp up to 90+ degree is kinda scary tbh. I am guessing the tablet part has a significantly inferior cooling than the keyboard.

The 13 has a 1650. The difference will be the 15 is a 1080p High to Ultra @ ~60FPS The 13” will be 1080P Med to High at ~60FPS. Of course there are some exceptions
@@TallyHoTech The 13 inch may also throttle really hard occasionally, as the tablet portion is only passively cooled while it contains the same CPU as the 15 inch

Warzone is a pretty hefty game, I dont even get max settings on my gtx 1060. Definitely more requirements than gta5

Broke my SB2 a little while ago.... It also had the same problem not detecting the GPU. Despite microsoft constantly releasing updates that "fixed" the problem, i experienced the problem from the day i bought it until 2 years later when i broke it. I in 0 way expect them to ever, ever fix that problem, i dont think its fixable and if it is, microsoft 100% is incapable of doing it how theyve been trying. Aside from that, its an extremely easy fix when you do experience it. Open "Device Manager" and scan for hardware changes under where your gpus located. Now that i broke mine im so nervous to buy this new one lmao. Why didnt they add thunderbolt?

What is undervolting?
You can get the 16" base model MBP for $2199 rn at B&H, which is $100 cheaper than this model with twice the storage, a better CPU, better gamut display, slimmer bezels, better track-pad, better speakers, faster SSD, TB3, and a comparable GPU. The tablet experience on this isn't all that great--you can barely call this a tablet, and it's really not worth spending over $2K just to take notes on it. Where I live (In Canada), the SB3 costs $100 more at retail than the MBP 16" at retail with all the compromises listed above.
Sorry, but Microsoft dropped the ball on this one.

does hooking up to an external monitor through the surface dock, say a 24" 1920x1080 drastically lower gaming performance? I'm looking for a portal workstation that can handle some games when I'm at home

Hey Tally Ho, hope I can get some advice here. I tried playing triple A titles like monster hunter world on 15inch surface book 3. The FPS started off pretty good: 60-65fps at high settings. But then after twenty minutes it dips to 45-50 FPS. I think it is the CPU that’s bottlenecking or is it a hardware problem. Should I send it back for warranty.
I guess it’s overheating and then it throttles the CPU
Macbook pro gaming is now finally decent with the 8GB 5600M option, just FYI. It has been shown to be around 2060 levels. It's a shame they didn't go for 5700M but that may come in next revision. That would make the macbook pro an *actual* gaming laptop.

What drivers are you using to game on it? On my Surface Book 3, 32 GB, GeForce 1660 Ti MaxQ I'm seeing weird, moving green & purple squares over the screen (and worse) which always result in game and 3D application crashes. I'm using the latest Nvidia Studio driver, as there's no Game Ready driver available?

Aww man how could anyone feel comfortable having their CPUs pinned at a 100 degrees regardless of framerates!? A conventional laptop cooler wouldn't even work to chill the thing.

Please don’t buy any surface products, software has many issues, they update it regularly, whenever new updates comes the system fails in many other hardware things...for me in last update and the keyboard and mouse stopped working...customer service is worst. Doesn’t worth the money we pay to those people!!!
