I am a sword fighter, the funny thing is that most people consider twirling useless in a sword fight but there is a hidden utility behind it. Twirling a sword allows you to change your stance and your tactics while remaining in motions as well as making it hard for your opponents to predict your next move. The only thing is it presents a risk because if you twirl for too long, then you may leave yourself open.
Repeated spins are used in several Shaolin techniques as well because the flash of the blade distracts the eye. You nailed it talking about unpredictability.
Plus, with a lightsaber the weight will be much less of a problem, allowing for much greater control, while every point of contact is potentially deadly to the opposite, vs any bladed weapon. Much more similar to a flail in utility, with the precision and control of a sword.
I learnt about this in fencing - 'spinning' is actually an aggressive tactic. It's kinda harder to pull out to block, but if you're being *very* aggressive, you're basically winding up to strike/lunge, and it forces your opponent to retreat and try to block. It's slightly-higher-risk/quite-high-reward. It fits *perfectly* for Anakin, who definitely believes the best defence is a good offense.

Man he could swing a lightsaber
He still can 😀
After watching Skallagrim for so long, I can tell you with certainty that it's a great move... if you want to get stabbed in the back.
0:52 i love how it looks like anakin is barely trying and obi wan is giving it his all
Because Anakin Is a Better duelist but obi wan is more focused and calm so he won
@@Andrea-tz7bm yeah true plus anakin was arrogant and took on the entire jedi temple
@@robertcook5049 exactly , I believe if obi wan ever fight Anakin in the temple he would have lost so badly
@@Andrea-tz7bm true but its a testament to obi wans skill that he lasted at long as he did
"I'll try spinning, that's a good trick". Anakin Skywalker.
When he did this in Ahsoka i basically went " Yeah lets gooo show these plebs how its done"
You need the Dooku and Anikin deleted scene. On the full video you can see he starts the fight by walking in with it. I used that one to learn it. It gives a good view.
Seeing that move is like seeing Yugi’s Dark Magician or Goku’s Kamehameha. It’s just a part of who he is and I love it
That move is an old move, it's called the plum blossom spin. It's used to transition from front to back in a continuous motion...
And frankly... It's only for show
That push at 1:26 is just so bad ass, like. It's telling - I'm going easy on you this is just training, remember your place among me, Padawan :D
Not only did Anakin want to be the best duelist in the galaxy, but so does Hayden.
"I'll try spinning, that's a good trick." lookin ahh 😂😂
Your video shined a light on something…
In Ahsoka, we see Anakin do his signature move again for the first time, since he got his body back.. 😭❤️
Nick Gillard the stunt creator of the Prequels designed a duelist style for the Jedi and Sith actors.
I always smirk when I watch 0:56. It's like the fight choreographers realised how ridiculous the sword flourishes were and decided to add 5 seconds of just swinging your lightsaber around.
They're feints
Story wise its suppose to show how equal they are
That they have basically mirroring each other
Because they know each other that much
@@lag00n54Yep. They knew each other so well that they we’re making micro-adjustments in real time, causing them to be in that loop.
A potential future, canceled by a counter future, canceled by a future of future = endless response loop stretching out into the abstract without a single blow
@@Tempusverumloool imagine if they spent 20 years in that flourish loop, adjusting, canceling and correcting predictions of each other's future moves without ever touching their lightsabers ever again
Anakin be doing behind the back just like Magic Johnson making the slick passes and moves!
My headcanon explanation for this move is Anakin uses it as a show of disrespect/bravado while dueling. He's essentially conveying the fact that his technique is so superior to his opponent he can even turn his back to them and remain safe.
0:58 I don't get why people make fun of that moment. I heard that's an actual fighting tactic people do. Also there is only one chosen one of Star Wars Anakin Skywalker. The Disney sequel Trilogy does not count.
I Agree man! they are so skilful! they just waiting for each other to make 1 mistake and have an opening! people don't get it :(
Because you'd get realistically get stabbed while doing these silly twirls. The Anakin from Ahsoka makes more sense. Less pointless moves
@@john50beach18Just say you know nothing about actual sword play. It’s called a sword feint. They were equal in the force hints why they literally made the same move.
@@DangSensei77 The fact you tell me I know nothing about 'sword play' and then you talk about people being equal in the magical force makes me think you're a 12 year old or an idiot
@@john50beach18It's called feinting. Basically to bait your opponent into attacking.
Although many don't like the Obi Wan or Ahsoka series, seeing Hayden make those movements with his saber is amazing, especially in a time where we no longer see interesting duels!!
some might say it's a good trick
He does become more and more scary to imagine oneself facing. His swings look so light yet they seem to land so heavily.
I’ll try spinning that’s a good trick
I think Hayden Christensen's unironically probably one of the best lightsaber wielders out there 😂
Back when star wars actors actually cared about being dexterous
considering that obi wan is not the strongest force user, it's quite impressive that he managed to hold against anakin in a contest of might with that force push
0:53 to 1:09 ...🤯EPIC!!! 💯 Both evenly matched & how both of the lightsabers don't touch as they follow their technique until it finally clashes/collides.😅😬 😎👍👏
The spin beginning at 0:40 is a thing of beauty. It was always my favorite maneuver
It's the coolest lightsaber move too
Hayden is that big bro we all needed when we wanted to have a stick fight outside
If only his opponent there pocket sand at him…instant defeat.
So, the "Hayden Maneuver" is _almost_ a potentially viable tech. Twirling is typically an awkward thing to do in a swordfight - there are uses to it such as remaining in motion during a stance change but you don't want to spend _that_ much time doing it.
The one move he couldn’t learn is the high ground
Love it when he does that 🔥
We were actually taught this during my Katana Training. Twirling the sword like this is really helpful and practical it’s basically a guard and parry while moving to another position or changing stance or attacking multiple targets and focusing on another. Really helpful and useful.
Anakin= Fidget Spinner
The true invetor of Fidget Spinner XD
Ah yes, my personal favorite Anakin signature move 1:10
