  • Monster House was a unique film from 2006 that has gained a cult following over the years. In this part 1 of a 2 part retrospective, I talk about the film in depth. In part 2, I look back at the video games based on it.

Remember watching this as a kid, didn't watch it all the way through cause it was getting a bit spooky and my ass knew I wasn't gonna sleep if I saw much more.
Great stuff though, keep it up

@@Sinsla7822 Yeah, the last few videos haven't been treated very kindly. I've got something in the works that hopefully performs much better. Thank you for the compliment.

I saw this randomly on tv as a kid. I remembered two things: the corpse of the wife still buried in the foundations of the house, which scared the crap out of me, and the uvula joke

It's all pretty iconic imagery. I feel like I never happened to catch it when it was on TV, but I did own it on DVD.

Seriously though, this video and ESPECIALLY your channel is underrated. You're actually gaining a sub and like from me.

I think the desert thing may not be intended to be taken at face value, and as Locust pointed out, probably most of the movie isn't. Something I recently came to appreciate about art is that most of it is a distilled idea, or a set of them, it's not like if you draw someone with smoke coming out of their ears, you're implying that their brain is actually being incinerated.
This is a pitfall most of the AAA games industry has fallen into - that more realistic = better, which is a baseline assumption that just completely ignores the basic nature of what makes games appealing - the fact that you experience what you can't do IRL. But it applies to all art.

Good point. It works as a surreal fever dream of a film.

Love this movie. I disagree with the plotholes section of the video though (except for the lack of people in the street that's definitely something) as I feel like for the movie to explain how human souls bind with physical object or places would take away from the enjoyment of the movie and either bring up even more questions than if it never tried explaining it or simply bore the viewer. However come to think of it, this movie really is just a really well shot fever dream where the main characters solve a mystery and indirectly save the lives of others (including Mr. Nebbercracker) in which is either completely unbeknownst to the folk there or goes underappreciated, as is the case at the end when they hand the toys back to the kids they belonged to. I guess they were trying to throw in a sub-theme of "Do what is right regardless of being recognized", especially with the scenes of the baby-sitter and the cops ridiculing them after trying to tell them the situation. It almost feels like it was never real, the way the other people react to the house dissappearing or literally coming back to life after being eaten by the house themselves. Although it helps it stay more of a childrens movie, I definitely believe that it is sort of a cop-out like you said, as the scenes of them being eaten were used to serve as events that drove the tension and pushed the characters to act, it almost feels as though at the end of the day nothing really changed for the characters other than Mr. Nebbercracker who was freed from his cursed life. I feel like when looking at movies like these the best way to enjoy them is to place yourself as one of the main characters in the story, and feel their tension and emotions and to not think about the details of the world around them, like a kid would do. Hard on the mind of course but easier for the viewer to be satisfied, because like you said, there are certainly other things to like about this movie than its story, which is what makes this one personally a favorite of mine for its incredible music score and cinematography. Long paragraph I know but thank you for reading anyway :)

Thank you for sharing! I think a good way to look back on it is like how a child might remember a surreal experience. In many ways, the way adults act in the world kind of reminds me of It, whenever adults start acting weird, which just adds to the spooky feel. I agree that not everything needs an answer, and some of the nitpicks were just me having fun.

There isn't any overt swearing from what I recall. It's just references to beer and death.
