Grimrose probably would have been better at the box office, too. It's so poetic when a movie, game, etc, ends up being more financially successful when an artist is able to take risks rather than when a studio or publisher stares over their shoulders and directs it themselves.
T Wash I wouldn't go that far. It's possible, and there are many cases of studio tampering not helping the film be successful either, but most animated movies that stick fully to artist vision tend to get overshadowed easily. Even the Nightmare Before Christmas didn't have what was considered to be a good theatrical run.
unfortunately that will never happen cause you know Hollywood has the mentality that they are the true artists, the true visionaries and just the all around voice that says "We know what the people want these guys that give us the ideas are just the errand boys" okay actually to be fair (I guess) one of the staff either the director or producer did say he didn't want to do a horror flick so that was the main reason for the change
Ian R. Nava Huber Id personally prefer, in the case of art, to just let the artist be. Sure I may not LIKE his work, but I can respect that it came from a place of genuine passion and heart.
That does happen sometimes (it's a contract clause called script approval). It's effectiveness depends on the clout of the writer vs. how much the studio wants to make the movie and how much the writer wants to make the movie. Sometimes, if no agreement can be made, the movie just might not be made. It also depends on how the writer originally managed their movie rights (in the case of turning a book into a movie or such-like.)
Although he's inevitably produce a lot of turds if he did that, I believe that we'd also have a lot more brilliant hits, too--probably on par with Hollywood, but hopefully better.
Good to hear he's still alive (I mean I haven't heard anything recently) I'm sure this was the last straw though and after this shitshow he said fuck it and left Hollywood and "The Business" for good. It would be cool as hell if he could hook up with Netflix or Amazon or somebody and get an original project that would be sweet. I mean there's been enough time I bet he could do his original vision somewhere at this point. I'd hate to think this is the film to be remembered for, but the public is fickle people only remember the most recent thing you did whether it was good or total crap that's what they tend to remember.
True story, when I was like 12 I was on Netflix looking for Who Framed Roger Rabbit to watch with my dad because I had forgot what it was called, and ended up putting Cool World on. Thank god my dad fell asleep halfway through, it had to be the most awkward and confusing thing I'd ever seen.
Yikes! ∆ Both of those stories are horrible I can never tell which are more Awkward real movies with actors doing sexy times or cartoons doing the same. Neither are very fun to watch with your parents frankly, hell there's a lot of movies that I have a hard time watching alone, they are just so cringy.
It's pretty clear the script was shit from day one, and it just got worse and worse as things went on. I mean it's a miracle the movie got finished at all, but saying it was a "miracle" and saying it got "finished" are words Ralph would probably say were both a blessing and a curse.
well, as I remember understanding this, it was because they broke the taboo I mean, yeah when they sleep together she became real, but it was not without consequences, like she became broken, like the guy too, they become inconsistent, mixed, morphing the 2 realities without a good result. interesting, the few shots that show her cartoon crazy side, show a clown... Maybe a indirect on the actress for try to mess with the director?
If they wanted to show that Jack and Holly had broken themselves they should’ve gone more creative with it instead of Holly randomly turning into a clown and Jack getting cartoon hands, maybe have Jack and Holly randomly changing forms and art styles it could be really interesting to see what they could do with it
Louas Gabeson I'd like to see the Japanese do something like this. The plot twist would be that when the waifu becomes 3d, he loses interest and commits suicide because his waifu can't be 2d anymore.
That original idea actually sounds more interesting than the movie itself. Damn I don't know if it would've been executed great but heck, that's a really good idea.
Gojiramus Primus So Valiant's brother had some shady past and he's torn between who to defend; his own family or those who were wronged. By God, we need a reboot!
The original idea sounds pretty brilliant in a very crazy unique kind of way. Would have made for a much more interesting picture. I'd watch the heck out of that!
Y’know at least the thing about hanging them makes some kind of sense they’re getting human stuff inside of them but how does being killed by a doodle change you it makes no sense
I dunno how often they read the comments, but just in case, is it possible to make Bakshi a recurring character, like Hyper Fangirl or Devil Boner? His insanity and crazy ramblings are hilarious, and I want to see more stupid stuff like him slapping NC and the eyeball hotdog
You have no idea how right that is. It's almost like Flit, from Gundam AGE. That dude, after the first season, literally needs a punch to the face every five minutes to have a single coherent, moral thought.
I adore Rob Walker's performance as Ralph Bakshi! From the moment he says "You Lazy-Ass-Hole!" all the way towards ". . . This is really fucking amazing." He totally captures the personality and spirit, of one of the best adult animators to ever exist. And this is one of my most favorite Nostalgia Critic episodes.
In highschool we got forced to watch cool world, which our teacher thought was a master piece with everything right. I was assigned homework of watching it repeatedly because I kept pointing out problems and confusing bits.
The teacher didn't get fired. He wasn't the brightest teacher either. He thought movies were good education. He also thought that Forest Gump was a true story. While my classmates didn't want me to mess with the teacher since his class was easy. He was going to flunk me for not watching movies and skipping his classes, but I told him "You got to pass me since I am the only student in class that can tell you who betsy ross is, That washington crossed the Delaware river On christmas to surprise the british army, Hell I can even take you to places where he is rumored to have planned the attack!" Did I mention it was a history teacher? He was a good teacher for me, since His lack of skills made me want to learn history so I could prove him wrong.
Wow, that's the craziest thing I ever heard, and I heard a lot of whoppers in my time. I'm sorry, but anyone with common sense will tell you that most historical and biographical films in general are not always going to be a 100 percent accurate because Hollywood does make shit up, or they exaggerate certain events, for dramatic effect; hence why you should never use movies as a learning tool to learn about history. The fact that your teacher wanted to use movies like "Forest gump" and others to teach you all history is insane. Hell, I'm considered a fucking idiot by most people, even though I'm usually right about everything (not trying to sound conceited, but it's true), and even I know that's dumb.
THIS is the guy responsible for Wizards? I was like 10 years old and fell asleep with HBO on, and woke up with Wizards playing. I thought I'd gone completely insane until I managed to find out it was actually a thing.
My dad actually showed me that movie, took me a couple of viewings to understand everything that was going on but man oh man are there some choice scenes I shall remember to my dying day :D
Until it actually happens, I will forever be an advocate of this film getting the remake/reboot that I personally feel it deserves! There's genuine good material in the original to work with. And let's not forget that Ralph's unused concept definitely has potential. So who here would like to see "Cool World" get a second chance?
velociraptor4you now I remember you I was looking up Cool World stuff and you and some dude were talking about the original script, and after seeing the movie yeah I gotta agree
I believe the other guy you're talking about is Tue Ngyuen. He actually managed to find an original draft of the "Cool World" script online. He's on TH-cam. Look him up, and he'll tell you about it.
I'd use the original script, get actors who can put emotion into their lines, get a 2D animator who's good at drawing in a cartoonish style and finally get a great composer.
Silence of the Lambs isn't really about Hannibal, he's just an important side character. It's about a detective or special agent, Clarice, trying to find the psychopathic serial kidnapper/murderer Buffalo Bill before he kills his next victim. Clarice consults convicted serial killer Hannibal "the cannibal" Lecter to gain insight into Bill's crazy mind and hopefully find him that way.
Is it wrong of me, to actually want a separate series, just with Jacked up Adventures of Bananaman? just a series with Holly scheming things, Jack foiling them and each episode ends with her crushed dreams and him deliriously happy.
If you look at what George Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels when he was unbound, it seems that a little artistic restraint might sometimes be not so bad. But completely rewriting a script without the visionary's consent is a really dick move.
Disturbingly common, poor Quest for Camelot immediately springs to mind. Originally conceived as a serious, pg-13 adaption of The King's Damosel, with no songs or anything like that. but since Warner brothers just wanted a Disney ripoff (literally, the animators where told to make it look as much as Disney as possible) that's what it became.
I'm convinced Ralph Bakshi could have only succeeded in the late 1960s - 1980s because the mouse was laid low and so there were opportunities for new animation legends to fill the void....plus everyone being on all the drugs until we all sobered up in the 1990s.
It's nice seeing NC strike a nice balance between critiquing and using comedy skits, without one feeling redundant or stretching for too long. I feel Doug Walker is starting to improve based on his recent videos, and I'd do nothing but thank him for that.
Dawson Brannan im also glad he did as well. Especially since most wont see the works that made him big. His works arent for everyone, but they are 100% genuine.
Im glad to be not the only one that noticed he is trying to tone down the sketches and focus mostly on him. Just having a healthy number of them to improve the review, not make it drag on. Kudos to him.
They had to: It's Ralph Bakshi! :D Apparently the whole joke was inspired by a commentary to Wizards where Ralph Bakshi kept on rambling about how he made it because he wanted to make "a family picture" despite the film being "Bakshit crazy" as Doug and Rob Walker would put it.
Thank God for Netflix not interfering creatively to screen writers. If you want to make a show or a movie, or a cartoon just go to Netflix and pitch your idea. The worst that could happen is you get rejected and you can keep trying if you're passionate enough of your project.
I didn't know that about Netflix. I've got a screenplay called Flowers which is about a lesbian couple. It's got some corny stuff due to the social awkwardness of one of the main characters but hopefully I found the right balance between the corny scenes and the dramatic scenes. I've been trying to use InkTip to get this idea produced and someone actually has asked for it. However, they haven't contacted me back for a couple of weeks so I don't know if they're willing to go beyond just reading it. If they're going to reject me, I'd prefer that they tell me instead of making me live with false hope.
@@jbwarner8626 Not exactly They’ve had some recent great adult animated shows such as Bojack Horseman, Beastars, and Tuca & Bertie (although they cancelled it Adult Swim thankfully picked it up)
So this film would have been sort of Son of the Mask meets Judge Doom, god can we start an indiegogo campaign allowing Bakshi to remake this? Seems to be working for Don Bluth...
Dude, that's a little TOO harsh. And let's be realistic here; this film was made whether you like it or not. It was made, and it exists. Since YOU hate it, here's my advice to you: DON'T WATCH IT. Simple as that, don't watch it if you hate it. And I'll have you know that I'm one of the group of people out there who actually happens to LIKE the original "Cool World" here, truly. Is it 100% perfect, great, and spectacular? NO. But are there elements to it that are actually pulled off well? YES. The script/story is disjointed, there's no very deep character development, there's a huge lack of explanation for everything that's going on, and the acting is C- grade at best. But the animation for the most part I feel is pulled off well (so are the backgrounds & set designs), there's good voice-acting here (even from Kim Basinger as Doodle Holli), and the music is pretty awesome. Bottom line, whether you like it or not (which I know you don't like it), this film was made and it always will exist. The people who do happen to love it will ensure that it won't be forgotten. And that I feel is, no offense, a pretty STUPID and RIDICULOUS thing to say. Because of the fact that films (whether they be good or bad) are made and exist, they can NEVER be truly, realistically forgotten. Would this film have turned out better if it was Ralph Bakshi's unused concept? Yes, most likely. I find that whole concept intriguing, and I for one truly wouldn't mind if that becomes the story of a "Cool World" remake or reboot. But because I'm one of the people who sees genuine untapped potential in the original, I would personally be open to a reimagining of it that fixes the mistakes of its predecessor.
velociraptor4you first I did not say it was 100% shit I mean I rather see a man's passion a man's dream that was runed though the mud by Holly wood so it might make more money I don't care if you like it or hate it I am not forcing you to hate it but I rather see the original be made then just a reboot the ideas there even by the art Style you can tell this was meant to be a darker film but hey that my dumb idea believe what ever you want to believe I am not forcing you to look at it same way has I do
OK, I'm sorry if I misunderstood you. I understand now that what you would prefer to see is Ralph's original vision. And like I said, I DO like his concept of a live-action/animated horror film involving a hybrid child of cartoon and human. I don't want you to misunderstand me on that. I was just saying that if "Cool World" does get remade, it COULD go either way. I'm just presenting another possible direction it could go in.
I actually really like Holly Wood as a character. I like her go get it attitude, I like her defiance, I like her pettyness. I don't know she's just really cool. I also liked the relationship between Brad Pitt and the black haired girl. There's a scene where because he won't break the law and have sex with her she compromises and proposes they masturbate together. I know that sounds so weird but I actually found that kind of sweet in the oddest way. Its so respectful. God this is weird.
MrStorm2909 Ikr? And Holly's intro dancing, plus how his creator extends his hand towards her, was also pretty amazing. She could've been such a badass character.
She's devious, I think is the word. It's a good example of when a female character being sexy has a character-based purpose, rather than being there for pandering.
AstralDragoon yes yes yes absolutely. I'm always rolling my eyes when I see the sexy female in a movie or show. But this was a well done character who was just sexy and there was no real deep explanation. It was just her character. Maybe because she had other traits besides being sexy.
fun fact about my life when i was little my parants bought this movie for me because they tought hey this is a cartoon so it must be for kids THEY WERE WRONG long story short thats the day that i started watching henhtai
The original idea sounds like it could be a prequel to "The Mask". I can't seem to find out how it ended, but I could imagine that the cartoon/human hybrid dying but leaving some of his power behind in the form of his face (mask) that when a person put it on they got access to the cartoon world's power. It would even work better if they went for the darker version of "The Mask" from the comics.
I watched a pirated version of this on TH-cam years ago and some of the visuals (mainly the Cool World visuals you pointed out) have become a major inspiration for my current art. I formed the same opinion of this after you made me aware of it in your Top 11 Mindfucks so many years ago. It wasn't good, but the visuals were so twisted, dark, and inspired by madness that it left a lasting impression on me.
Princess Chaos At least some good came out of this train wreck. Executives and producers half the time are just a case of "too many cooks spoil the broth."
With Hollywood so deep in its own ass with this reboot craze it'd actually be really original if Bakshi did a reboot/remake of Cool World the way he originally intended it to be.
Cool World was a great idea, and had the potential to be amazing... if the higher ups hadn't gouged it apart and left behind a sad adult ripoff of Roger Rabbit.
This needs a modern day reboot. This whole film is like an acid trip gone wrong. So many random and crazy visuals. I couldn't imagine actually being on acid while viewing this. You'd probably go insane.
I saw this for the first time on acid, and let’s just say Ralph knew what he was doing when creating this masterpiece. The 2D mixing with the 3D is insane!

There's actually a "family picture" already made out of that concept. It's called Who Framed Roger Rabbit :D
Indeed.
INVADER ZIM PROFILE PIC FOR THE WIN
Lesson learned. Make sure the contract states that the producers can NEVER touch a writer's script... EVER.
unfortunately that will never happen cause you know Hollywood has the mentality that they are the true artists, the true visionaries and just the all around voice that says "We know what the people want these guys that give us the ideas are just the errand boys"
okay actually to be fair (I guess) one of the staff either the director or producer did say he didn't want to do a horror flick so that was the main reason for the change
i would prefer that borth writers and producers could go to a compromise. Because sometimes, the script is changed for the better sometimes not.
Fun Fact: Ralph Bakshi said that this review and Doug Walker where funny
But did he call him Dog Walker? Lol
Nope, that was my mistake, he just said he was a funny guy
Good to hear he's still alive (I mean I haven't heard anything recently) I'm sure this was the last straw though and after this shitshow he said fuck it and left Hollywood and "The Business" for good. It would be cool as hell if he could hook up with Netflix or Amazon or somebody and get an original project that would be sweet.
I mean there's been enough time I bet he could do his original vision somewhere at this point. I'd hate to think this is the film to be remembered for, but the public is fickle people only remember the most recent thing you did whether it was good or total crap that's what they tend to remember.
he's wrong
When? Is there a video?
The original idea that Ralph had sounded alot better than the final movie (comes to show how producers can ruin a movie).
Gabreya Bradley Exactly... It sounds very very creative.
Gabreya Bradley I was just googling, some of the original concept ideas and.... Wow!! They're amazing.
It almost sounds like a secret origin story for Judge Doom, if Disney gave Roger Rabbit the "live action Wicked" treatment which I hope they DON'T!
damn it in this it says the hybrid child was a boy, but when i read it up it says it was a girl so which is it? lol
For never was there a tale of more woe
than that of Ralph Bakshi and the big Hollywood studio.
Ayden Burgess You want awkward? I saw Eyes Wide Shut with my parents when I was like 12.
Yikes! ∆
Both of those stories are horrible I can never tell which are more Awkward real movies with actors doing sexy times or cartoons doing the same.
Neither are very fun to watch with your parents frankly, hell there's a lot of movies that I have a hard time watching alone, they are just so cringy.

The funny thing is, Kim still couldn't show this movie to the kids
Stranded at the Drive Inn-John Travolta was a cousin to Real Mayo 2......Naruto's 2 Cool
That was kind of Bakshi's intention.
Bob Jones 1 word: Karma
Even though the kids are now in their 30s.
Bakshi was playing the long game.
did anyone else notice that when the girl first started turning back she was transforming into an entirely different looking character?
It's pretty clear the script was shit from day one, and it just got worse and worse as things went on.
I mean it's a miracle the movie got finished at all, but saying it was a "miracle" and saying it got "finished" are words Ralph would probably say were both a blessing and a curse.
That's what you get when you don't use protection, kids.
I think we all noticed.
well, as I remember understanding this, it was because they broke the taboo
I mean, yeah when they sleep together she became real, but it was not without consequences, like she became broken, like the guy too, they become inconsistent, mixed, morphing the 2 realities without a good result.
interesting, the few shots that show her cartoon crazy side, show a clown... Maybe a indirect on the actress for try to mess with the director?
If they wanted to show that Jack and Holly had broken themselves they should’ve gone more creative with it instead of Holly randomly turning into a clown and Jack getting cartoon hands, maybe have Jack and Holly randomly changing forms and art styles it could be really interesting to see what they could do with it

...So weird
Yeah... I don't understand how so many thought that Kim Basinger was hot. Definitely NOWHERE near what Holli Would should have been transformed into.
Ginger Rogue Yeah, Basinger was definitely a studio-forced casting decision. Bakshi admitted in an interview that Basinger was miscast.
I don't know...she managed to hook up with Batman, so she must have been considered hot at the time. I know I thought she was.
This may sound weird but what would she look like in an anime?
So does Frank's girl.

Are you going to make a tripped-out movie like this one? It's cool with me if you do.
In highschool we got forced to watch cool world, which our teacher thought was a master piece with everything right. I was assigned homework of watching it repeatedly because I kept pointing out problems and confusing bits.
Sounded like a winning teacher... Hope his ass got fired for terrible lesson planning.
Halie Hope that much of been difficult
You should submit this story to Danger Dolan's sub-Reddit when he does his next 10 worst teachers lists he'd have a field day with that story

Joey Vellestra
Fritz the Cat is a masterpiece every toddler should watch, just like Silence of the Lambs.
Pepper Millers what it is silence of the lamb?
Grainne Quinn ...you never heard of "Silence of The Lambs"?
Grainne Quinn I've never seen it but it's about a murderous cannibal called Hanibal Lecter
Is it wrong of me, to actually want a separate series, just with Jacked up Adventures of Bananaman? just a series with Holly scheming things, Jack foiling them and each episode ends with her crushed dreams and him deliriously happy.
karsten69 I don't know, I think I'd prefer to see Holli happy. I can't stand to see a pretty girl cry, be sad, or be depressed.
you'd prefer to see a super villain, that almost destroyed the world, happy? you're weird
Holly’s a sociopath
If you look at what George Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels when he was unbound, it seems that a little artistic restraint might sometimes be not so bad. But completely rewriting a script without the visionary's consent is a really dick move.
Happens every day unfortunately.
The problem is that he gave up on artistic vision to sell toys.
+Rokiriko Lucas was never a very bright man. I doubt it was actually him we get to thank for the brilliance of the originals.
Zero Cool Well said.

Yup. 100 agree!
I'm with you on that! I want to see this film get a remake or reboot, BIG TIME!
velociraptor4you no let THIS film die and be forgotten but let him do his original script that what I want to see
Dude, that's a little TOO harsh.
This is my favorite nostalgia critic episode ever because this is exactly how I always imagined meeting Ralph Bakshi would be like.
I guess that's the same reason why I liked this movie. that and the kickass animation
Do you mean Minerva Mink was only on ANIMANIACS for fan pandering?
The animated segments of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" edited back-to-back would've made a more coherent film than this.
At least that POS movie had a good soundtrack

The original idea sounds like it could be a prequel to "The Mask". I can't seem to find out how it ended, but I could imagine that the cartoon/human hybrid dying but leaving some of his power behind in the form of his face (mask) that when a person put it on they got access to the cartoon world's power. It would even work better if they went for the darker version of "The Mask" from the comics.
That isn't half bad, actually
LizardClone2 In the words of the late great Gene Wilder: "IT! COULD! WORK!"
LizardClone2 Sounds like a decent idea for a reimagining.
LizardClone2 Well we already know the origins of all versions of The Mask, but that actually sounds like a cool idear.
DivineCypher9590 Right?
I watched a pirated version of this on TH-cam years ago and some of the visuals (mainly the Cool World visuals you pointed out) have become a major inspiration for my current art.
I formed the same opinion of this after you made me aware of it in your Top 11 Mindfucks so many years ago. It wasn't good, but the visuals were so twisted, dark, and inspired by madness that it left a lasting impression on me.
Princess Chaos At least some good came out of this train wreck. Executives and producers half the time are just a case of "too many cooks spoil the broth."
Be free Ralph Brakshi...Be free.
That was a beautiful moment
With Hollywood so deep in its own ass with this reboot craze it'd actually be really original if Bakshi did a reboot/remake of Cool World the way he originally intended it to be.
reboot craze that they started in the 30s, you
It could be the right time since people these days are nostalgic for 2d animations
Cool World was a great idea, and had the potential to be amazing... if the higher ups hadn't gouged it apart and left behind a sad adult ripoff of Roger Rabbit.
Quinton Blackburn they must have been on a 3 day acid trip at the time or something.😒
