The Gelli® Plate is the perfect art tool when you are unsure about what to create, or you fancy a bit of mindless creative fun.
Sometimes, if I don’t have much time, or I’m not feeling inspired or motivated, I’ll pull out my Gelli® Plate and make a stack of backgrounds. There’s something very therapeutic about brayering paint around and just letting things happen.
It’s the perfect place to experiment with pattern and paint, and you end up with endless awesome papers for future creative play. Occasionally I’ll get a print that is so "journal worthy" that I simply have to glue it in and layer it with other painty goodness.
While I work with the Gelli® Plate, I like to keep a stack of various different paper types next to me. My favorites include newsprint, cardstock, newspaper, shipping tags, watercolor paper, Anthropologie catalogs, text paper from various books and other random papers I’ve collected in my studio.
From a paint perspective, I’ve found that cheaper acrylic paints work best. You want a fluid consistency that contains a little water - this allows for nice, smooth rolling with a brayer and stays wet for longer.

Very interesting color choices. Pleasing, and the combination seems fresh. I will definitely be trying some of your "segmenting" techniques. Thanks!
Thanks so much! 😉
Thank you Robin-Marie!!!! Lovely video!
You are most welcome!! 😊
Needed inspiration so I watched again. So many lovely color combos and textures!I Really like your use of the stencil impression left on the brayer addition to a tag! Like many others, I could make these papers all day. What to do with them is the bigger challenge.
Thanks so much and sorry for the late reply. I always forget to check comments! 😫 Use them for notes inserted into gifts or mail them like cards.
Wow.... 😮 this video was great now I want to run 🏃🏽♀️ and get my kit !! Something new for my journals. TFS

Great video thank you... so creative... each one is a piece of art
Thanks so much! 😉
I just saw the Gelli plates at Dick Blick and scratched my head about what they were for. NOW, I see all the fun and creativity possibly after viewing your video. Thanks so much. Now I need to figure out how to squeeze it onto my art cart (I live in a small apartment) hahahaha!
Ha!! Glad you enjoyed it!
You showed us some great ideas! Thank you!
Awesome and glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Such a fun idea! I’ll definitely be trying this method!
Great and have fun!!
There's something about these Gelli printing videos that's so relaxing to watch. I started using the segmenting layers technique when I bought the small Gelli plate and started using it in my large art journal. The small size of the plate made me figure out a different approach. I have three different sizes now and use them all a lot. The smaller ones are great for some quick printing when you don't want to clean up a big mess afterwards. I really love to watch you making art. Thanks so much for sharing. It'd be fun if you could show how you move on with different techniques after this printing session. I imagine some stamping is involved since you've got these awesome stamps 😁💖
Yes, those small plates are so nice. I need to remember to get mine out more when I am creating. I use these pieces as backgrounds for journal pages, I sew them into envelopes for mail art and layer bits into collage. 😊
Love this! I am so inspired by it. Glad I am working with my gel late right now, so thanks for sharing. I am off to do these techniques right now!.....
My pleasure and you are most welcome! Have fun!!
I love their new paints. Nice video :)
Thanks so much...I really appreciate it! 😊
Robin, I really love 💕 all those papers and tags you made. Yet another way to create lovely pages to use in other artworks. Thank you so much xx Mags new subscriber.
Thanks so very much!
Great video! Lots of information
Thank you for the tutorial, it is always a good idea to see if there are tips that haven't been tried yet.
I'm thinking of buying a kit for the extra plate.
I use plastic cutting boards under my plates, they are all coated in paint but still work perfect at keeping the plate from sliding and table protected.
Glad you enjoyed it and that is a good idea!!
loved this video! very inspiring.
Thanks so much! 😉
I really like this idea, thank you. It would be a terrific way to be inspired in a journal page to do the segmenting. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it, Linda!!
This was such a fun video. I really enjoyed it. And thank you so much for the free download of your tags. I love them. :-)
You are most welcome!! 😊 Glad you enjoyed it!
I really learned a lot in this video. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!😉
LOVE it...THANK YOU!!
My pleasure, Tara! Glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely!!!
Thanks so much!
Very well explained.
Wonderful..glad you found it helpful!
Hmm the gelli print paint does seem to come off easier than the other paints. So incredibly talented. I definitely learned how to better use my gelli plate.
I am so glad you enjoyed it. The new paints are formulated for the plates so they do seem to work quite nicely. I do know climate can affect the paint as well.
Just add glycerin to your paint (available from health food stores or the pharmacy in walmart) in order to extend drying time. Or just spray your plate with water. No "special paint with a special price" required.
Thanks for the tip!
Great advice, I tell people this all the time! You can also get Michaels brand “slow dry medium” in a tube for like $3, if you just roll it out on your plate before the paint it really extends the working time.
In other brands, like Golden, it’s called “acrylic retarder”. Golden also makes a fantastic line of paints called Golden Open paints, they stay wet so much longer than regular acrylics!
Thank you very helpful
How much glycerin?
Punk créativité! Magnifique!!!
Thanks so much!! 😉
Great video!
Thanks so much! 😉
AMAZING VIDEO!!! I was glued from the start to the end. Don't judge me but I lost my big happy smile when video went into speed mode. No!!! I just did not want this video to end. I have so much to do but.... making fresh pot of coffee and must watch this again! Wow!
Oh, thanks so much!!!
Go to play back speed and set at .5. Not quite real time, but pretty close
What an inspirational video! Love the idea of segmenting. By creating printed layers upon printed layers you've created such delicious ready-to-use prints. I can just imagine lovely paintings coming out of them. New subsciber from Dubai! 🧡🐪🌞🌴
BTW could you please share where you got your stencils from, especially the scribbles one?
So glad you enjoyed it! I do love making papers with the Gelli Plate. Most of my stencils are either from Stencil Girl or The Crafter's Workshop.
The first couple minutes are the most important. Suggestions for the care of the gelli plate and paper choices are covered.
😉
Wonderful, thanks.
You are most welcome!!!
Big WOW!
Thanks so much!
This looks like lots of fun. Curious what you do with the finished papers...always cut and use for collage? Also what are the tags for...gift tags or something else?
Thanks! Yes, I use the papers in many projects: mail art, art journals, collage. I like to stitch other bits to the tags to use as gift tags or inserts in my journals.
You have some vfc ery interesting stencils!!
Thanks...some purchased and some handmade.
I thought I was the only one who loves to save my paints to other papers while gelli printing, Lol! Great video thanks for sharing..
Thanks so much!
I never "clean" mine unless I'm using Distress Oxides :) and for the same reason as you. i LOVE the yummy dried paint remnants :)
I know Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know a method to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost my account password. I love any tips you can offer me
@Yosef Brecken Instablaster ;)
@Raiden Trace i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Raiden Trace It worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account !
@Yosef Brecken Happy to help :)
Lovely vid thankyou you are very inspiring. Can you tell me what you do with Tags??
Thanks so much! 😉 I often tuck them into gifts, mail them as a card, etc.
haha i've forgotten how clean, and clear the gelli plates are when you first get them. i don't ever clean mine cuz i love the grungy look. anywho, you go SO fast i thought the vid (all of it) was on 2x speed or something LOL... awesome work. TFS
I know, right! Now, mine are so dirty and hard to clean. I like the smell of a brand new plate...I must be loco!
love
For you these are background to begin, for me they look like finished art pieces... love to see your thinking process, although not being able to see what you see...
Awe, thanks so much!!! 😊
Using a script helps me. nothing extremely structured, maybe even just a list of words you tend to forget. ;o) Other than that, good job. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks so much!
Can u use a canvas to do this?
If you mean gelli print onto canvas, yes. It will obviously look different, but I would give it a try.
What do you do with all of the tags?
Most are used as gift tags but I also use them in my art journals!
♥️‼️
Glad you enjoyed it!!
It is a shame the website no longer carries all those pretty colors, they didn't even carry yellow.
Sorry...this is an older video.
After you pull the stencil off the gelli plate, if you want to use the paint that’s still on it kind of like a stamp, it works better if you spritz the side that has paint on it lightly with water first
Oh, for sure!!
Finger painting would be a lot easer
I don’t get. It why you use scrape papers
Over and over ?
Perhaps, but you would not have the same results as with the gelli plate.
M'y tbancks
Many thancks
You are most welcome!
I was drawn in by the video title and then I started trying to watch it. I love you idea but you seem far too unorganized and 'all over the place' for a COHERENT lesson.
Hi there, not sure I understand your comment. The video is a creative person - creating. She's having so much fun playing with her gelli plate. It's inspiring to others to go experiment, it's not a step by step tutorial. I respect your opinion, but I think it's a fabulous video and I don't see anything incoherent about it.
Thanks so much and sorry for the late reply. I always forget to check comments! 😫 Creating with the Gelli plate is a fun process but not one that can be done slowly. The paint dries too fast and in order to layer and segment as I do, you have to move fast. So glad you liked it.
