    I remember always arguing with my Grandma about speakers. While I was more of a fan of the Creambacks and their slightly more vintage sound, she always loved the brighter sound of the Vintage 30's like the ones used on the first 3 "Decapitated Goat" albums. "Those V-30's are more METAL than your Nana's hip replacement!" she'd say to me. Often times we would get into fist fights over which speaker would be better suited as just a "blender" tone. But I must say, she always stuck to her guns and never compromised her values. I'd always tell her, "Nana, one of these days that brutal death metal tone is gonna kill you!" And then one day...it did. Rest In Peace, Nana. 😢

    Amazing video, thanks!
    One thing that I like about darker speakers is that we can rise the highs at the amp and get that "gain/distortion effect" that some amps have with that knob, without the guitar sounding thin on a band situation

    • @phantomflame0658
      @phantomflame0658 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes absolutely thats exactly what I love about dark speakers. We can crank the hell out of the presence knob which gives you this airiness when playing clean, and this huge grind when playing heavy gain. This is why the g12m-65 is my all time favourite speaker

    I have the g12m-65 and its an absolute beast of a speaker. The main thing everyone misses is they try to A/B it with a v30 or t75 or H75 and no wonder it sounds super muddy and dark.
    I like how you changed mic positions to give it a chance, but I believe the real difference is cranking the Presence knob. Since its a dark speaker, you can run super aggressive settings that you wouldn't normally be able to get away with.
    In high gain metal you can achieve an incredible GRIND that is out of this world. I tried the outro song in drop A on my Tokai explorer with EMG85x bridge pickup, into MXR Sugar Drive as boost, into Egnater Renegade amp, into g12m-65. Unreal tone, so heavy

    According to John Suhr who tested the Neo Creamback it sounds scary close to the old Brit made Greenback. I use a 50 watt Plexi and the 60 watts of the Neo is perfect for my single 12 light rig for clubs. I use a Traynor Y-CX12 cab. It is slightly wider to accommodate my Marshall sitting on it and slightly deeper because they tuned it to give you a 4x12 resonance /thump. I am surprised because the sound doesn't seem at all compromised. It's a proper baltic birch cab. Cab and speaker together was $440.00 USD ..not bad!!!

      I much prefer these to greenbacks, which can sound stuffy and broken. Mixes great with v30 and tons of others. All of them a great for slightly different tastes. I got the neo cuz they had the least bass and the cab I was putting them in was too boomy. Your mid knob will actually have an effect if you turn it up or down with these! "Ready mids" I guess. Also I love the weight. I'm a skinny weakling but I can carry this 412 all by myself now. Thanks for the video.

      The V30 and Creamback M is an amazing combo m very balanced and fat sounding but surprisingly clear. The combo of the creamback M low mids and V30 upper mids is a very full and balanced tone . The top end has a nice bite but is also rounded and smooth. The V30 bass keeps the somewhat loose bass of the creamback in check . It's an amazing pair for vintage tone where you need higher powered speakers. This paring is also very vocal sounding and has alot of Character . It's a good combo to split the difference between vintage and modern but does lean more towards vintage. The creamback M and H paired is Pure vintage .

  • @HiFiWright
    @HiFiWright 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I really do appreciate your commentary on the speakers.
    You have really good flow and dont try to use unnecessarily sophisticated or "big sounding" terms which tends to make videos lag and takes away from the content context regarding sound and cohesiveness in having a clear understanding as a viewer.
    You just get straight to the point in a clear and cohesive manner that gives a good visual image of how a sound might translate to preference or style. A+ in that regard
    Now, although your descriptions of the V30 and the H Creamback were spot on, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the M-65 watt Creamback.
    You are correct in that it has a "darker" sounding presentation than the other 2, but I would argue that darkness only applies to the upper midrange bite and in-your-face presence.
    It actually has MORE upper end clarity or "air" than the H Creamback by a long shot and I would argue, having that alone, puts it in a more similar tonality for the highs as the V30 as opposed to the H-75 watt version- which, to me, has the non-smooth upper midrange bite or bark that I dont like minus a bit of the V30 "sizzle" or (more appropriately) "brilliance". To me, the M-65 basically scoops the upper mid bark and bite and then picks back up at the tip top of the brilliance range that the V30 overachieves with and has a similar upper high register that gives them both a sense of openness or airy top end quality, just more laid back with the M-65 since it still scoops some of that V30 brilliance i mentioned.
    I personally hate the H-75 but I feel as though a hybrid cab of equal parts V30 and M-65 speakers might be the answer to having a great all around rhythm tone, especially for some tight but thick, full bodied thrash that is not tuned far down. The M-65 can add the lower midrange fullness that the V30 lacks as well as balance out the sizzle of the V30 to a more balanced level as a result of the scoop there with the M-65 Creamback as well as its very textured midrange.
    Perhaps this only can really apply to, say, C tunings or higher whereas a strict V30 setup would still reign king for anything lower.
    For perspective, another way to think about the positive the Creamback 65 watt can bring to the V30 for metal- is the fact that its OG version (similar sounding too), simply the G12-65 heritage model, was THE speaker used for the entirety of Metallica's Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets albums, among many other 80s metal acts as well. Jim Marshall loved them and all but made them exclusive as the driver option in the Marshall cabinets from that late 70s and 80s era.
    I'd be fairly confident in trying that mix i mentioned above. Instead of people trying to replace the V30 for its excessive sizzle, its most likely a better option to throw either that M-65 in with it or the heritage G12-65. The 75 sucks, though, in every iteration, for my tastes 😂👍🏻👍🏻
    Again, thanks for your comparisons and I will check out some more of your stuff based on your style of presenting, even if solely on that, which I doubt will end up being the case. Excellent job, good sir👍🏻😊🤘🏻

    First of all - great presentation as usual. About a year ago I was looking for a replacement of the Celestion V-type, which was fitted to my Marshall by default and unfortunately raped my ears with exaggerated high frequencies. After a deeper research, I chose G12M Creamback just due to its vintage character. I mainly play classic rock, so this speaker worked best for me. Well, maybe it's time to build a 2x12 cab ;) Anyway, I highly recommend the creambacks M and H.

    Pretty cool video and while the H creamback seems to be the winner in this video... in the room, for me... it's just a bit TOO present / spikey... the M 65 creamback is more balanced. And as you pointed out... if you put the mic closer to the center cone you can get a better "mic'd up" tone on the m65. Clear winner for me overall.

    The creamback M65 is a fantastic speaker. It's very versatile. It can do vintage and modern . It works as a standalone speaker in a 1 by 12 cab or 1 by 12 combo and it pairs well with other speakers. The M65 even sounds great on an open back combo or cab which is normally not the case with M magnet speakers. They are usually to loose and flubby in the low end in an open back but the M creamback . Does quite well on an open back situation . The Creamback M sounds amazing in a 2 by 12 paired with a V30. A very full and balanced sound . The V30 keeps the low end tighter but the 2 together produce a very fat thick and full range tone . Great from 2 to bottom. The low mids of the Creamaback and the upper mids of the V30 blend perfectly . Lots of definition and cut from the upper mids and a killer low mid growl and a great throaty bark . I have an orange 1 by 12 cab with a V30 and a DSL 40CR in which I swapped out the stock V type speaker for a Creamback M65 and run the combo speaker and the 1 by 12 together and it sounds fantastic. The Creamback M65 sounds like it was made for modern Marshall's such as the DSL series JVM series and even modern vintage style Marshall's like the origin 50 . The Creamback M and V30 combo is perfect if you want to split the difference between vintage modern or want to cover modern and vintage style material.
    The Creamback M paired with the Creamback H is an unbeatable combo for vintage tone when you also need higher power Handling making the use of a G12M20 or M25 or G12H30 an impossibility.

That being said, a lot of these are situational, meaning that different speakers and/or mic positions may suit different guitars (6, 7, 8 string-etc) moods, and even different guitar players, depending on the situation. It also never hurts to experiment, if you have time on a project to do so. Thanks Kohle for this amazing video, let the metal and the music flow!

    My Mesa OS Slant/Straight 412 sounds absolutely fantastic with two H75s in an X pattern with the original 2000s Mesa V30s. I have a M65 in my recto 212, 16 ohms so the brightness of the 16 ohm speaker balances out with the darkness of the more vintage voiced speaker. And the result is a smaller cab that sounds similar to my 412 while providing surprisingly better sounding clean tones. Now I'm watching this to decide on what to put in my new Mark III combo

      I have V-30's, and H75's in a Marshall 4x12 as well, and I'll agree that these two speakers belong together. I'm surprised that more people aren't doing this. I'm personally not a fan of either speaker on their own, but together they sound fantastic, and can cover a wide range of music.

    I liked the G12H best in this video. It seems to emphasize some of that nice grind around 1k, that I love so much about the good old HM-2. The Neo could be useful for some old school Black Metal, though…

    I had mixed in 4x12 v30 and NEO in X pattern and they are beauty. But Contrary to this , In person V30 are scooped and NEO has those mids which popups. V30 looser ,rounder bass and low mids, high are more prominent, NEO are tight , precise, more mid and are beauty for soloing. Together smokes. 16 ohm variant.

    The 75H to me always sounded more like a Greenback in a live setting. But I think that's why I prefer the 65M. To my ears the GB and 75H can get shrill at loud volumes, whereas the 65M has a rounded off top end but still has that awesome wood sound of the other two. I'd actually be curious to hear how the 75H and 65M mixed with a G12t-75 instead of a V30. (Never thought I'd use those speakers again but I've actually grown to like them.)

      For a while I had my 2x12 loaded with a g12t75 and a g12m65, and it sounded pretty darn good but the g12t75 very aggressively overpowered the creamback. About a year ago I swapped the g12t75 with a Neo creamback and the 2 different creambacks compliment each other way better. The Neo has a bit more upper mids and the m65 has a bit more lower mids and they shine together.

  • @datplaceholdername
    @datplaceholdername 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually liked the Neo Creamback quite a bit but then again I'm a big fan of scooped tones. People say things like it's high school tone, bedroom tone, doesn't work in a band setting, etc. but I kind of view this as other musicians failing to adapt. You carefully select the tones of the other instruments to fill in the "hole" the guitar is leaving -- after all, if the mids are scooped, that means the guitar sound is not full range, which is something you can exploit.
    For people who view scooping as very 90s and "dated" though I won't refute that because it's kind of correct. I just really like the 90s, myself.
    Perhaps the Neo could be a superior alternative to the T-75 for people who actually want a good scoop, though.

    Hi Kohle, here's my nice comment. Your channel and especially your video on tone (comparing the rectifier with a rockerverb I think) caused me to set out on my personal tone-finding journey. I have thus far bought an ENGL Ironball 20 and two amps on the used market (a Valvestate and a Tiny Terror). Im absolutely loving it and I think it's doing the songs I wrote justice, but maybe one thing I'm still missing is that Creamback G12M-65 in my Marshall cabinet :)

    The Neo Creamback is probably my least favorite of the three, even after blending it with the V30. I'm much more leaning towards H and M (and actually getting some satisfying results with the H), from there it all depends on the context for me. The M is much more swampy which is something I really enjoy nowadays - really strong blend with the bass but still retaining its own characteristic. So yeah, H or M for me, that's the solid stuff.

    This Is my dream video! Creambacks are my favourite speakers. I use the H version in isolaton in my 1x12, and the Neo combined with a greenback in my 2x12. This way they sound fantastic. I also like to use creambacks IRs and blend them with IRs of v30 etc etc...
    So to me, the One that sound the best Is the H version. It has that fantastic flavour, like a v30 that as something "broken" or "Rotten". Absolutely amazing

    The woody low mids of the Creambacks especially the H version is exactly the tone you hear from the lowered powered G12M20 G12M25 G12H30 Etc .. when I think woody low mids I think of Jimmy Page playing no quarter on the song remains the same soundtrack album . When he gets to the solo he switches to the neck pickup of his Number 1 1959 les paul which still had the stock 59 PAF in the neck and he starts the solo playing a flurry of woody bass string notes and its the Clearest sounding neck pickup tone I have ever heard. The tightness and firmness of the low strings on the first few frets is crazy. So clean and defined but also overdriven just the right amount. And the not a hint of mud mush or flab. I have never heard another neck humbucker sound like and this was before page added any push pull coil splits series/parallel phase switching etc and I put this very woody and defined neck pickup low note soloing down to the speakers he had in his cabs . He used the Pulsonic era G12H30 55 Hz greenbacks and those speakers have a killer and beautifully Woody low midrange . The 55 hz cone provided that great clean woody Mid range.
    Celestion did an amazing Job recreating the wonderful tone of the vintage G12M and G12H speakers in a package that can handle powerful Amps without having to use a 4 by 12 or in some cases multiple 4 by 12s. It's great to get that sound in a 1 by 12 or 2 by 12 that an not have to worry about damaging your 20/25/30 watt speakers. The M and H creambacks really do nail the character of the classic low powered M and H celestions . They had the G1265 and The G12H80 which are fantastic in their own right but they don't quite capture the character of the earlier Low powered M and H Greenabacks . They Creambacks sound a little more vintage
    People say modern Celestions don't sound vintage enough or they don't have the classic celestion sound but I strongly disagree I hear it everytime I use my Creamback M65 G12H30 75 hz heritage G12H30 55hz heritage and even G12H30 anniversary which sounds the least vintage of the bunch has the classic celestion midrange.
