    My fishkeeping horror story-
One day I slept late, forcing my innocent and unsuspecting husband to feed my betta breakfast. Master, the betta, saw his chance for violence. He lunged from the water and viciously clamped his jaws onto my husband's fingertip, refusing to release him until his rage was exhausted. We thought everything would be fine, but then my husband started craving bloodworms. At the next full moon, he grew fins and a luxurious tail. We've had to install a swimming pool in the backyard to accommodate his monthly change. Being married to a were-betta is tough, but we make it work.

      @@FishForThought Well it’s a valid point!
Part of the reason why so many beginners buy common plecos for example is because, as their name implies, they’re very common and very cheap, and every pet store seems to carry them even when most hobbyists can’t house them properly

QotW: when i was like 7 or so, my Dad had this huge aquarium full of Neons, Mollys and Panzerwels (idk, plecos maybe? Catfish?) and allowed me to buy a male Betta. I called him Finni, and for a few weeks he was a very happy red Betta. Then my Brother wanted one too (3 yrs younger than me) and Dad said „of course, you get a female so they can have babies“. After few days together Finnis fins were torn and i begged Dad to give that girl back or for Finni to get his own tank, but he wouldn’t listen. So i had to watch my Betta die. Dads response to my tears? „It’s just a fish“

My fish keeping horror story: I've been in the hobby for about two years, and I'm up to 7 tanks. When I was starting off I had a 20 gallon long, with a betta, three khuli loaches and a school of rummy nose raseboras. In the 40 gallon, I had a school of neon tetras two angel fish, corys, ottos ect. I was unaware that you could actually over clean your tanks, so I spent six hours every Saturday cleaning these two tanks, which are fully planted. One day I woke up and just about every fish was dead. Khuli loaches, the betta, six neons and one angel where all that was left. lost about 820 dollars worth of fish overnight. Then I dropped my phone the same day. I've come along way, and I've even managed to breed shrimp, kilifish, and guppies.

QoTW: Back in 2006 we moved into our current house, but during the move our fish tank was damaged, so we had to put all the survivor fishes into a lot smaller one. One night our huge male ancistrus jumped out, and mom found him on the floor covered by dust and dried stiff (we were doing renovations hence the dirt). She didn't know what to do in the middle of the night, so she threw him into a bucket of water so dad or me can deal with him in the morning(knew the toilet wasn't an option). In the morning we asked her why put the fish in the bucket, why not back to the tank? Cause he was swimming like normal. Lived a good few more years.

I remember reading that pleco sp can survive in drought conditions for a long time actually. They can dry up stiff and everything, but once they "rehydrate" they kinda just carry on with their business. I don't remember off the top of my head how long and how they even accomplish this, but they certainly can lol

Spaceman here. My son was very excited to see his tank on your channel. He was even more excited to see the rating. The plant on the right is Lobelia Cardinalis. 7:33. He had a little guidance with the placement but he did pick all the hard scape and plants himself. The tank has gone through a few changes and has moved on from the guppies that began to overpopulate the tank and now has a beautiful male samurai betta and some snails. I may have to resubmit again with the updated tank

I finally decided to get into the hobby after researching and watching both your reviews and serpadesign. Unfortunately for me, the nearest pet store is 3 hours away driving time. It's taken over a year to get everything going with cycling the tank and sourcing live plants for the aquarium. My fish keeping horror story is my heater shorted out and fried all my fish. The tank temp was way over 100. Not too hot to touch. But a good hot shower type of temp. I was so upset and did extensive research on the best heaters. I spared no expense on my new tank heater. Never had any issues after that

QoTW: I have a small outdoor koi pond that I lost like 80% stock because of invasive cane toads. In the 20+ years this pond has been running, never had issues with toads, but I guess conditions were just right and they came into my yard and bred in my pond. Didn't notice the string of eggs, maybe they were hidden in the overhanging ferns or equipment where I couldn't see. One morning I went to feed the koi and there were thousands of little black tadpoles. It didn't matter how many tadpoles I scooped out, how many water changes I did, adding salt, moving the fish to a kiddie pool, I just couldn't save them. I don't know if the tadpoles contain any bufotoxin at that stage that could have poisoned the fish upon being inevitably eaten, or if the sheer increase of organisms overloaded the system, or both, but my koi started dropping left and right one-by-one shortly after that. This happened a year or two before COVID and I still have two koi that survived, however, they were the youngest of that stock. A lot of the koi I lost were over a decade old and extremely difficult to find locally now. I have come to hate toads with a fiery passion since then.
A bit of a lighter story: I once worked at a lfs and I was helping this lady buy fish for her tank. It went well and made some good selections for her tank that had been cycled for a couple months and all. After finished ringing her up I say "hope you enjoy those little guys" and she goes "yeah, hopefully my husband and his friends dont eat these ones after a night of drinking again" as she walks out the door.

Attention, fin enthusiasts! It's FTR time - fins in the air! 🐟 Brace yourself for an incredibly entertaining experience. Now, let me share my recent fish tank horror story. During a routine weekend visit from college, I discovered my dresser infested with mold and wood bits due to a long-forgotten water spill. The moisture wreaked havoc on my 37-gallon tank stand, leading to cracks and soft spots. Cue panic as I relocated all my aquatic buddies to a hastily acquired 20-gallon tank. The aftermath? A wardrobe in disarray and a tank now residing on the floor. Stress levels: through the roof!

    • @ItsLaurenE
      @ItsLaurenE 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I can only imagine, things like that cause my anxiety to skyrocket. Sounds like you handled it well considering everything. Hopefully you won't need to do a water change while it's on the floor, i had my 30 on the floor while fiance was building the stand for it, I absolutely loved laying on my livingroom floor at night watching them no lie there; however if you already know or not SLOWEST WATER CHANGES EVER due to the fact the water levels of the tank and bucket on floor don't have enough space for water to suction and flow out.

Edit; Chris, you know we don't just want, we need a no water change ecosystem vid. We need all the vids! 😉
Edit#2;QotW; I bought a few orange Sunkist Neocaridina shrimp from a lfs, quarantined and added them into a Skittles tank in my kitchen. Like a week later (heavily planted tank so I didn't see ev shrimp ev day) I saw one of the orange guys with a tiny green scale on its belly, weird but I've seen green eggs before so maybe... Nope, it was the dread green fungus/ parasite/ disease Ellobiopsae! 😱 Deep substrate, over $120 in UNS ControSoil and at least $100 plants, not counting livestock in that tank and I can't put anything in or take anything out with the possibility of spreading the dread green Ello spores(?) So my tank sits in limbo a year later. All the remaining shrimp are healthy, wild style by now, but I'm scared to touch anything in there. It has it's own tweezers, net, water top off container etc. It's a radioactive tank just sitting in my kitchen...😬

My fish keeping horror story happened a couple of years ago. One morning one of my tanks started leaking in one of the seams. I quickly emptied it and moved my fish into a temporary container. Upon further inspection there were several seams that were leaking so I opted to get a new tank instead of fixing it. Little did I know this was just the start of the disaster. I set up the new tank, adding back the fish after a while and so on. A few weeks later in come *cyanobacteria* 😢. I desperately tried to keep it under control by cleaning and blacking out the tank but to no avail. Eventually I decided to completely restart the tank with fresh materials. So back into the temporary tank the fish go and I spend a whole day emptying and rescaping the tank. Now two important details before the grand finale. The tank shelf's for the glass lid about 5 cm down from the top, and I'd just gotten a fluval nano led, which is screwed onto the tank glass 😳 See where this is going?
I finally finish the damn mess and put back filter heater, and.... Lamp. So because of the lid shelf I only had five cm to push the light onto, this made it quite unstable so I tried screwing it on tighter to get it to hold...
Well the whole fucking back of the tank just cracked and a I sang a very beautiful song of curses before throwing out a second tank into the recycling room.
Yeah I was very intense considering throwing my two other tanks out of the window after this but I pushed on and now I have 6 lovely tanks and am more into the hobby than ever 😊

My fish keeping horror story happened when I was 17 years old. I had a beautiful 75 gallon african cichlid aquarium with several VERY EXPENSIVE cichlids (on top of the more "normie" ones). I'd been searching for a female melanochromis Aururatus to pair with my beautiful male. Couldn't find ANYWHERE as my lfs didn't carry them because they were too aggressive. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My dad decided to go to *redacted chain pet store* the afternoon I went out of state for a church group trip for 5 days. He found a little juvenile auratus there and put it straight into my established tank (rather than the quarantine tank literally a foot and a half to the right). By the time i got home I had several dead fish (including my wild caught Tanganyikan that I still to this day have never seen for sale again over a decade later) and the rest riddled with columnaris. I lost over half my tank. But that stupid new fish SOMEHOW was one of the survivors. Would have cost hundreds of dollars to replace all the fish that died. He still to this day insists he did nothing wrong and it DEFINITELY wasn't the fish he added that was sick. 😭 I'm not bitter at all. Nope. Not at all. 😭😭😭😭

I was able to save 4 adults and 5 babies but it was indeed horror 😦

My aquarium horror story is pretty basic but still tragic. This is a few years into fish keeping so I should’ve known to quarantine new fish but nothing bad ever came from not doing it yet. Got a yo-yo loach, I think, from petsmart and threw him in my 55g community that had about 40 fish total. The new loach showed signs of ick the next day so I ordered medicine after seeing two spots on just him, started treatment two days later and most of my tank still died. I went from round 40 fish to only have 7, my eel, dwarf gourami and 5 otocinclus.

QOTW (warning, graphic story): Used to live with my aunt and uncle who had a community tank with some goldfish. Since I was cleaning my own tank that day, I offered to clean my uncle's tank too. Went to use the gravel vac & one of his goldfish got too close and got sucked up against the vacuum cleaner. The suction ripped its stomach open and all its insides were ruptured. So we had to use tank water to flush the toilet! The poor fish must have thought it was a drought or something! But they all made it through with like a quarter of the water left. My fishkeeping horror story is that when I got a 16 gallon to replace my 8 gallon (only a few months after starting to keep fish), I had the moronic idea to build a filter myself to save money, using plastic parts bought from eBay. The plastic wasn't fish safe and killed everything except 4 neon tetras, including a gorgeous red tail shark that I got together with the 8 gallon (second hand) and was trying to give away for obvious reasons (shame on whichever store clerk suggested this stocking to the previous owners). Traumatic is an understatement. If it weren't for the 4 tetras I would have quit right then and there.

My fish keeping horror story is from about 30 years ago (sad but true). I was a mom of a toddler working about 60 hours a week, nights and weekends. I had a 20 goal on long with guppies, neon tetras and a few other fish. The tetras and guppies kept having babies despite the fact that I was not able to properly care for the tank. There were probably 50-60 fish in the tank. One night at about midnight, after work a twelve day, I decided I had to clean the tank. Unfortunately, I made too big of a water change before falling asleep on the couch somewhere around two am. I woke up a couple of hours later to find that EVERYTHING in the tank had died. I left the couch and went to bed. When I woke up a few hour later I hoped that it was all a terrible dream. Unfortunately it was not, and I gave up fish keeping for a couple of years. As it should have been. Poor fish; and all those babies. 😢😢😢

QOTW horror story: My first freshwater tropical tank when I was a teenager. I went away to a festival for a long weekend and asked my mum to feed my fish. When I got back, almost all the fish were dead. Mum claimed the tank heater had malfunctioned and over heated, though I never quite believed this as it was working fine again when I returned. The horrific part of the story though, was that she had kept all the dead fish in a bucket in the garden 'in case I wanted to say goodbye to them'. Sweet thought, but it meant I came back from my trip to a stinking bucket of decaying fish!

Qotw: I still feel guilty over this one. So I had this little tiny black and silver platy in my tank. Dude was still very little but he had been showing some signs of illness. He also blended in with the substrate and had been hiding near the bottom. When I was doing a water change, he had practically buried himself in my substrate and had gotten sucked up in the tube. While he was definitely smaller than the tube and didn’t seem to be damaged by it, the stress of the incident combined with him being sick (I was actively treating him at the time but wasn’t quite sure what was up with him) he ended up passing the next day. I’ve never gotten a platy again. My poor little guy was the last straw for me combined with knowing that the pet store ones all seem to come in sick 😦.
As for more positive fishtank updates: I got the nano fish I was hoping to get for my smaller fishtank! They immediately went to hide in the massive Java fern when I put them in the tank yesterday

QOTW: My fish keeping horror story was when my daughter and her then husband found 2 x 20 gallon aquaria in the basement of their new home and my youngest daughter, about 10 or 11 at the time, wanted them so she worked them off. We got them home and filled them up. We didn't know about cycling at the time so we put about 7 or 8 guppies in one of them immediately. About an hour later one of the seams gives out and dumped all 20 gallons all over her carpeted bedroom. Fortunately, though, we had the other aquarium to put the fish in and only lost one. I also bought aquarium sealant the next dau and repaired the seam. But 20 gallons is a nightmare to clean in a carpeted room!!!

I have a planted aquarium housing shrimp and frogs. I had a weird temperature spike in my tank and it caused a bacterial bloom that sucked the oxygen out. The temperature rose like 8 degrees Celsius in a couple of hours. One of my shrimp started seizing alerting me to the issue and I went to save everyone. But in the time it took me to grab my net my African dwarf frog vored the downed shrimp. The shrimp was the same size as him. I put the frog in a sick tank and he almost died via imploding but he didn't. Still have that frog and and have not had another issue with the tank with temperature. I got rid of that heater and the issue was forever resolved. I have had the frogs and shrimp coexisting for years and that was the only incident I have had with their coexistence.

QOTW Answer: I have 5.... One time I dropped my goldfish from my hand trying to put him back in the tank from a bag he landed in a bucket after hitting the side and he had a cloudy eye for 2 weeks. I have never used my hand to do again.
Then I had another goldfish jump from a net on to the floor.
I had 5 Angelfish in a bucket getting ready to go in a tank, we got a cold snap and when I went to feed them they were all so cold and dieing! But I was able to save all 5 by putting them in a bag and putting it in the tank and putting the tank water in the bag slowly and then I let them sit in the bag for an hour checking on them every 10 to 20 minutes.
I had a Betta that I needed to pop something on her side, I had her in my hand and she jumped off and I COULD NOT FIND HER I was so scared "oh no did I step on her?" Was going through my head but then I finally found her this was maybe 20s but it didn't feel like it.
And my most recent one... I was charging the water and for some reason one of my Betta girls decided she wanted to go down the tube, I LOOKED AWAY FOR JUST 1 SECOND AND NOW I HAVE I FISH STUCK A TUBE!!!!! I had.......to blow on one side and suck on the other, but I got her out.

I have a blocker on the filter hoses and the water couldn't get out there. I thought that water was leaking out and checked all the seams. The seams were dry. I noticed drops on the back wall of the aquarium. It turned out that I poured too much water and the air bubbles from the filter created condensation and splashed onto the lid, water flowed down the lid and fell into the holes for the wires for the equipment and flowed down the back wall of the aquarium onto the cabinet

So a few weeks after that, I was deep cleaning my room and I found what I thought at first was a piece of Java fern laying on my floor. As I look closer, I realize that it’s the guppy. My horror story is that I once bought an acuatic frog or something (don't quite know what it was), one night it just disappeared. Not in the tank not on the floor, just gone.

My week is not going well already, I forgot to lock my leopard gecko enclosure on Friday and I came back to work today to find it open, I have turned this place upside down and my only clue is a leopard gecko poop 10 feet from the basement egress door with a half inch gap to go outside where it has been getting below freezing at night
